    Kim Chi Pancake (김치전)

Pyeong Chang Tofu has a welcoming environment with plenty of indoor seating. You are greeted right away when you walk in and you can place an order within minutes. As a group of 2, we decided to share the kimchi pancake appetizer that came with kimchi and various banchan. The pancake was delicious, savory, cheesy and a great addition with the dipping sauce. I also appreciated the kimchi that paired nicely together with the pancake. For the main, I ordered the spicy chicken bibimbap. Here, you can adjust your spice tolerance to preference - my tolerance is high but I decided to go for the medium level. The bibimbap came out in a hot and sizzling dish so just be careful if you're sensitive to hot foods! After waiting for it to cool down a bit, I mixed the layers around and was happy to get the crunchy rice at the bottom of the dish. The chicken was a good balance of spicy but not too overpowering. Depending on the preparation, you might be used to having bibimbap with sauce that you mix in, but this variation already has everything combined within the pot. It also comes with a small side of tofu soup, which was piping hot but so worth it as it was spicy and comforting. I really enjoyed all of the bold flavors with each dish and I'm excited to come back again to try something new!

I was craving some Korean tofu soup and decided to try this place. I had their combination tofu soup which came with beef, squid, clam and shrimp. It also came with a bowl of rice. The flavor was alright but nothing memorable. All I could remember was that when we were there, a party of around 6 people talking extremely loud which made our dining experience miserable and unpleasant. We ended up eating as quickly as possible so we could get out of here.

I came to have an early dinner with a friend last week. I'd only had Korean food a couple of other times (this might signal my enthusiasm for the cuisine) and was so disappointed it was erased from my memory. This one will stick for sure! We had original fried chicken and soy sauce with garlic. I personally liked the original the best - it came out hot and crispy but not so hot it burns your tongue :) The best parts were the pickled daikon and the excellent service! Everyone was so nice and on top of things, the staff noticed how much I loved the daikon and kept bringing more. I went to an upscale KBBQ place last night and after having dined at Pyeong Chang, I was sorely disappointed by the other place! Pyeong Chang takes the cake so far! The daikon here packs strong pickled punch!! F and I ended up playing chopstick wars over them because we both loved them so much! Looking forward to trying all their yummy appetizers!

Unique menu with lots of different options (options like soy milk soba noodles which u don't see too often) Also so many vegetarian / vegan options, and our waiter was well versed on what was veggie friendly which I appreciated. I picked the stone tofu bibimbap (+$1 for the hot stone, but the crispy rice is worth it!) and asked for no egg. They put fried tofu on it along with various veggies, like bean sprouts and carrots. The dish also came with vegan soft tofu soup, and you could choose the spice level. The tea was complimentary and had a great earthy flavor. Banchan was also delicious and vegan except for the kimchi which had fish sauce. We found free parking on University after 6 pm, and made reservations, but not too busy on summer weekdays in the evening since most of the Cal students are gone. Very pretty and clean interior with to-go boxes you could grab yourself, no need to wait for the waiter! Gratuity is automatically added for parties more than 5.

Deeeelicious! We came in around 7pm on a Wednesday night and did not have to wait long before getting seated. It was warm and cozy inside. I ordered the kong guksu because I love all things soy and it did not disappoint! It comes with salt on the side for you to add and adjust to your liking. The broth was nutty, thick and overall delicious. My boyfriend got a seafood tofu soup that came with an egg and crispy rice! The rice was a fun little bonus we weren't expecting! Our server (seemed like the owner perhaps) had great customer service so it was we left with a full belly and smiles on our faces!

This Korean restaurant is a cozy spot that serves delicious kitchen-cooked dishes, no BBQ grills at the table. I like this because I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the food without any hassle of cooking myself. Plus, it means I won't have to worry about leaving the restaurant smelling smoky and BBQ-y. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street. The food was very good! We tried the original and shoyu chicken wings, and the latter was our favorite. The bulgogi and the soft tofu soup were also really tasty. They have a good selection of bonchons. The only thing that could be improved is the service. It was a bit hard to get the server's attention, and when they did come over, they seemed a bit hostile. It was a bit off-putting, but overall, it was still a good dining experience.

Definitely would come back again! The tofu stew here is top notch--the flavor profile here is strong, unlike some places. The ban chan here is also my all time favorite, everything was super fresh and refreshing. You could tell the ban chan wasn't just sitting out in the open waiting to be served. What's also unique is that this place also serves the leftover crispy rice w/ hot water that comes in the clay pot! I've only ever been to one other place that does this--I love it when they do this. The only down side is we did notice the stew to be a little too salty so I had to pour some water, but bc the flavor was so good I didn't really mind tbh. Seating was plentiful here. Everything was clean. The ambiance felt like a clean and modern home-y Korean spot. Overall would definitely come back again!

    The daikon was especially delicious!

We arrived when it was still pretty quiet, but by the time we left this place was packed. The staff were really friendly and generous, and the food we ordered (half & half of the wings, original and soy garlic) was delicious!

Such a hidden gem located in Berkeley. We had an outbound to east Bay last weekend, and we were craving for authentic Korean food. I was searching for a delicious Korean food while we were in Berkeley and I found this mom and pop shop. So we give it a try. Turned out all the food was so amazing. We tried their new menu, Korean cold noodle soup and it was so refreshing and perfect for summer days. We saw a poster in front of the store that they have the most crispy Korean seafood pancakes, so we gave it a try, it was loaded with seafood and was crispy too. We were recommended to try their Ikura bibimbap since they were the only one who carried the dish so we also ordered that. It was delicious indeed. And it was something that we never tried before. We would definitely try again. I love their galbi soup a.k.a. Meat soup it was full with meat, and also the cabbage makes it so refreshing. The burnt rice was perfect to eat it with the soup. My husband loves their tofu soup. It was such a perfect dish since he was having his sinus on that day. Overall, we will come back to this place to their other delicious menu such as fried chicken or just a simple Galbi.

Growing up in Wisconsin in a small city at the tip of Lake Superior Chinese restaurants were just about the only ethnic food available throughout the country. Exotic as they may seem to have been and widespread Nationally which is partly due to the Chinese building the railroads cross country. Chicago Cafe (Woodland, CA): Founded in 1903, academic research suggests this spot near Sacramento is the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in the U.S. and California. These days I prefer Vietnamese or Thai all day long because the flavors are better and more variety and cleaner with respect to how the dishes are prepared. Well, I stumbled into this spot today and I was rather blown away. Large portions, low prices, excellent variety and top notch service. And a huge portion for only $13.95. I had the vegetable rice, complementary hot sauce and a nice iced cold five dollar Heineken. OK, this is a spot to put on your list. See you there!!! And now here are some interesting factoids: While thousands of Chinese immigrants first came to the U.S. to build the transcontinental railroad in the 1800s, it was the subsequent decades of legal discrimination that forced a marginalized community to turn the restaurant industry into their primary means of survival and citizenship. The "Lo Mein Loophole": In the early 20th century, U.S. courts recognized restaurant ownership as a pathway to obtain merchant visas. This loophole sparked a massive boom in the creation of Chinese restaurants, particularly luxury "chop suey palaces".

They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). Smaller menu than your typical hole-in-the-wall with 25-30 items including AZN fusion items like shrimp ceviche, kimchi pasta and tom yum pasta. Beer, wine, and soju cocktails available. I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. I was violently craving seolleongtang and did some research to find a spot in Oakland. The menu is pretty big with a lot of enticing options--I love bossam and blood sausage--but because I had tunnel vision, I stuck with the soup. The broth itself was good, and they had salt and pepper on the table so you could season it to your liking. Unfortunately, the noodles were way too soft and almost mushy, and the meat was extremely tough and hard to chew. I couldn't finish it. If seolleongtang is one of your favorite dishes, I'd probably skip it here. My husband got the kimchi fried rice, which was huge and great for sharing between 2-4 people. Based on the portion size, I do think it could use an extra egg, more Spam and some nori on top. It leaned more oily and buttery than other versions I've had, but it was still good--just nothing too special. The vibe and service were solid, so I'd come back to try other dishes and update my rating accordingly.
