    Gluten skewers

Promising soft opening. Surprisingly good lamb noodles We got the lamb (with skin) in original soup. It turned out really good (the soup has a very slight spicy hint and rich lamb flavor) given that it is not easy to find good lamb noodle soup in the area. Also ordered the gluten skewers and they were tasty. This restaurant is much spacious than its Richmond site which is good. I think it also offers more variety of food.

This was the picture of the servers apron

This is my first day visiting dumpling day, and I found their summa to be outstandingly. Delicious the Customer Service was outstanding as well. The server was extremely attentive. We got our food very quickly, places very clean and I give it five stars across the board.

I am glad we did because I was not disappointed. The place was busy but the service was prompt and excellent. We had ordered three dishes to share family style with rice. First off let me start by saying the portions are generous. All three of the dishes were a hit but to me the star of the show was the garlic chicken. The sauce was excellent! If spicy is your thing then order the beef, it was loaded with peppers! Finally the walnut prawns were nice counter to the garlic and peppers. We also ordered steamed rice to go with the meal. This was an excellent choice and we will most definitely be back.

Tonight I was craving good local chinese food and decided to give this place another try. I don't know why. I always felt bad with each previous sad serving. It was terrific! The order was ready on time. The containers were bulging with food when before the servings were getting skimpier and skimpier. The chow fun was not swimming in oil. The cumin lamb was no longer 90% peppers but a generous portion of lamb and a good ratio of peppers. The crispy chicken appetizer was delightful. The dry green beans had a snap. It was such a complete reversal from the last experiences that I'm glad I went back and we will certainly continue to satisfy our Szechuan cravings with this place. I had braced myself expecting in these dire times with many food places closing or gasping with high costs, a less than stellar experience. What a wonderful surprise!

Half of the table prefers the spicy style and the other half prefers salted egg yolk. The fish is my other favorite. Doesn't matter if it's chili oil or pickled veggies. Always fire. The shrimp here is one of my favorites. Super crispy, spicy and juicy. Veggies are standard/quite good. I usually alternate between green beans, bokchoy and cabbage. The Chongqing noodles are surprisingly light in flavor with much less spice than I expected. Service can be hit or miss in terms of speed. There's often only 1 server so please be kind/patient! We got there around 12pm and there were only a few other tables seated at that time. They sat us immediately and our group kept getting distracted while we were supposed to be looking at the menu to order. They were so kind and kept checking in with us to see what we wanted to order. We finally made up our minds and ordered a huge spread: Spicy Chonqing Beef Noodles, Green Beans, Scallion Pancake, Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken Wings, Golden Crispy Pork Spare Ribs, and the Xiao Long bao. The food came out so fast! In less than 20 minutes, we had every single dish that we ordered. My favorite dish was the Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken. The batter was light, very crispy, and seasoned to perfection. The chicken itself was juicy, piping hot, and kept me going back for more. The mala level in the Chonqing noodle dish was very beginner friendly. If you're looking for an intense numbing sensation with a "oh gosh maybe I should slow down" type of spice, you should ask them to make it more spicy. But, it was just the right level for me to be able to enjoy everything else with it as well. I always appreciate a family style restaurant, it makes it easier for people to try new things. I will definitely be back and bringing all of my friends and family.

I have NEVER written a Yelp review, and it is unfortunate that this experience is what finally made…read moreme take the time to do so. I have also never felt the need to publicly speak on racism in my life, but what happened here was too blatant to ignore. For context, I am a student at University of California, Berkeley and a PM at a Fortune 500 company. I say that only to make clear that I am a professional person who understands how to treat others with respect and how basic customer service should work. I came in for a pickup order and stood there attempting multiple times to get the employee's attention. She ignored me repeatedly, even looking directly in my direction without acknowledging me. Then I heard her say hello, and for a moment assumed she was finally speaking to me. Instead, she intentionally greeted and assisted a couple who had just walked in behind me. After helping them, she again looked my way and continued to avoid acknowledging me. In that moment, the treatment felt deliberate and discriminatory. When she finally addressed me, the interaction remained hostile. She appeared suspicious of whether the pickup order was actually mine, despite me giving the correct name that was already listed on the receipt and not visible to me beforehand. Beyond the service, the food itself was equally disappointing. I ordered the orange chicken, and it was some of the driest, lowest-quality chicken I have had anywhere. I have traveled extensively and eaten food all over the world, and it is rare to experience food this poor combined with service this disrespectful. This was an embarrassing experience for a business located near University of California, Berkeley. There are many better options nearby, and I would strongly recommend spending your money elsewhere. No one should have to deal with treatment like this or pay for a meal like this.

I ordered through a tablet where I ordered and paid first. Refreshments were a plenty with my own pitcher of water! I ordered the house special noodles with bone ribs, spicy, and also the cucumber salad. Both were amazing!! The cucumber was worth the $7.99 since they use large portions of high quality cucumbers. The broth of the noodle soup was amazing also! Never, have I had Chinese inspired noodle soups like this before. It was rich and deep with flavor. The dried peppers and the nuts gave it a good texture and you can taste the freshness of the noodles. The bone on Ribs were so tender and they gave a generous amount. So perfect! All in all, I totally recommend this spot! I don't know any spot in the San Joaquin county that even comes close to this. Great job!

When I first heard of Great China, I assumed it would be more of a casual neighborhood mom-and-pop…read morespot, but I was definitely wrong. It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

Although 3.8 is pretty low in my opinion, I believe this place should receive more of a 4.5 if I could do half ratings. Why? - Food has been consistently good and I know because I've been here several times ordering pretty much the same things (green beans, mapo tofu, lamb ribs and fried chicken); they MADE me like lamb which is huge because the only place I only loved it was in New Zealand, not a fan of the aftertaste - Service is friendly, food comes out relatively quickly; only suggestion is making more stops to refill waters/tea and ask if we are ready to pay the bill because we kind of need to flag them down for those things - Price is decent, def not $$, more like $ just because I split 5 large dishes among 3 people with LOTS leftover and it amounted to $33/person and in the era of 2026 with skyrocketing gas prices this is really good for tax and tip included - Easy parking in the area All in all, I hope this business is here to stay because I will be coming back again and again.

With that said although Yu Yu is located in a pretty sketch area of Oakland/Berkeley, I would still recommend eating here just for its authenticity. They seem to have a parking lot in the back but we manage to find street parking in the front. You're better off looking for parking in the back than the front due to limited spaces. As for the food it was delicious. For the jajangmyeon you are given the noodles separately from the sauce; this allows you to pour in as much or as little as you want. I personally felt their flavors were mild enough that I poured in the whole thing. As for the tang su yook, it comes with a sweet and sour sauce that's bomb dot com. Even as stuffed as I was with the jajangmyeon, I managed to still find it in myself to finish the last bits of the tang su yook. Highly recommend. The restaurant itself seems to be newly renovated; don't let the rough exterior fool you. The inside was nice and clean but they only have room for four large tables that can fit a parties of 6, and the rest range from parties of 2-4. Last but not least service, they seem to run lean and understaffed but the gentlemen working did his best. Just be mindful if you come at a busy time you may have to wait. Overall looking forward to coming back here!
