Fresh coconut drink OK. It had a lot of liquid but the meat was tough. Young coconut has sweeter water. In young coconuts, the meat is translucent and tender. Also, in younger coconuts, you don't have to fight to get the meat out of the shell. Crispy chicken was good. Reminded me of sweet and sour chicken but with more garlic in the sauce and a bit more heat. The nan gyi dok noodles could have been better. Flavor was good. I would have liked a firmer noodle, a little closer to al dente. Wish we had ordered the tea leaf salad instead. The pork and pumpkin stew was yummy. The pumpkin was cut into huge chunks and would have been easier to eat if they were bite-sized pieces. The meat was fork tender. It wasn't spicy but it was "rib-sticking" good, a comfort on a cold, rainy night. The coconut rice had only a hint of fragrant coconut, perfect so as not to compete with the main entrees. The eggplant had a similar sauce as the crispy chicken, garlicky but no heat. I didn't care for the black sticky rice. Too cold and chewy. The palata was like roti served with fresh bananas and strawberries. The last dessert was the fried bananas. We chose to make all 3 desserts a la mode. We tried strawberry, mango and coconut. Didn't care for any of the ice cream. They had a strange aftertaste. Also lots of ice crystals. It was quiet when we arrived on time for our 5pm reservation. However, they were apologetically rushing us out the door by the end of our meal. We couldn't linger over our desserts. We weren't offered hot water refills for our tea. Apparently, there was a mix-up. A party of 6 arrived for their reservation 1 hour earlier. Plus, 2 extra people joined their group unexpectedly. Does this restaurant actually want new customers or is their current customer base just grateful for being allowed to eat here? This was the strangest restaurant dinner I have had and there is little chance I'll go back. We dropped over $300 for our group and based on the service we had from beginning to end, I don't wish this dining experience on anyone. I have been to the two Burma SS's in SF, so we planned to go here based on food expectations. I think some of the other Yelp reviews have mentioned service as an issue and it really feels like the owners and wait staff do not care about service. It seems as if the restaurant staff here are used to having lots of people begging to get in, so they can be as rude as they want. We actually felt like the restaurant staff didn't want us there. We did hear another party leaving and one of the owners asking if their bad experience was going to affect their Yelp review. So they care about online reviews as opposed to their customer's actual experiences. If it was not a birthday dinner, we would have left to go elsewhere. There was pressure from the wait staff and hostess to confirm the size of our large group (14 people) at least 8 times over the course of 25 minutes (not an exaggeration), pressure to hurry up and order as they tried to take menus from the table before we ordered, pressure to leave so another large group could take our table and the awkwardness of our waiter Lin (sp.?), who only wanted to speak to the person in our group who made our reservation throughout the whole night. Just a service nightmare that overshadowed any actual food experience. Five of us arrived about 15 minutes early before our 6 PM reservation and we were asked three times by the woman in charge to confirm the size of the group as we stood at the front of the restaurant. We were not trying to be seated, we just wanted to get out from the rain. The table was set for 14, but the woman in charge indicated that she needed complete confirmation and would not seat us until everyone arrived (unlike the table for 10 that was seated near us). We kept saying our number was confirmed but she would not believe us and would not stop asking. She actually removed a separate table for 2 from the 14 seats after we indicated that we confirmed the table for 14. She would not move the table back until our last two people tried to sit down. Even after all 14 people arrived, the hostess wanted to confirm the number of people (she refused to count). Our waiter insisted on using the first name of the person who made our reservation throughout the entire meal. This is a reasonable approach for a company event, but a little much for large family dinner. Awkward is the word. Lin spoke loudly every time, calling out his unsolicited recommendations and insisting that we order his favorites. Ends up some of the dishes were pretty bland (yes the Tea Leaf Salad was good, but that was not specifically recommended). He spoke over the top of people's heads as if there was only one person at our table and the entire wait staff had no hesitation pushing through people to pick up dishes from the table (I did not hear an excuse me once). Some of the better dishes included the lamb curry and lemongrass chicken. The shrimp pumpkin stew was bland and several noodle dishes did not taste very fresh. Lin even tried to insist on a dessert flavor selection among the teens at our table. The teens didn't want to go against his insistence, but once an adult in our party asked what the teens wanted, Lin finally relented. We actually had our fried banana dessert not delivered to our table, We told Lin that we didn't want the dish since it was too late (30 minutes after ordering) and he replied that he would take it off the bill in a condescending tone, as if he was doing us a favor. He said "the chef forgot to make the dish". When you have a tablet-based ordering system and takes over 25 minutes for us to get our other desserts (scoops of ice cream), a little apology would have been a sign of good customer service, but I can see now that this restaurant is only into self-centered service. And of course, the pressure to get us to leave by 8 PM was a lie - due to the delay in getting our dessert, we did not get our bill until 8:10. There was no one waiting so the pressure from the restaurant to leave was entirely built on a lie. They added a 20% gratuity to our bill - they were lucky. This would have been one of my rare "no tip" payments or direct tip to the chefs approach. read more

Though frequently overshadowed by Burma Superstar--which is indeed a superstar in the realm of Burmese food, Royal Rangoon is a fine place for Southeast Asian flavors. The style is a little less edgy than some other Burmese places I've tried, but the complexity is definitely there. (++) Tea Leaf Salad ($12; a mix of Burmese tea leaves, fried garlic, beans, peanuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, lettuce, tomato, jalapeño, and dried shrimp): Mmm so much yummy delicious fermented tea leaves! It's less pungent than some other places where it can border on overwhelming and/or overly salty, and Burmese purists should note that there are fusion elements such as sunflower seeds and jalapeno. However I found it to come together decently in a light, yet interesting salad with a nice variety of textures with a satisfying amount of crunch. (+) Nan Gyi Dok ($11; rice noodles with coconut chicken sauce, yellow bean powder, cilantro, fried onions, and topped with a hardboiled egg): A bit on the plain side; Royal Rangoon's version seems to use less curry than usual. On the plus side, it's likely among the least greasy noodle dishes I've ever had. The style is close to homemade comfort food, and you do have to give credit to the fanfare of fried onions. Royal Rangoon excels in the overall dining experience--the food is intriguing, and the ambiance is nice (they even have these fancy modern-looking forks!). If I remember correctly, the space had previously been some upscale farm to table restaurant. Service is somewhat on the slow side, but overall it's a relaxing atmosphere. The portions are a little bit small, but I do find this consistent with several Burmese places. Having never had Burmese food I didn't know what to expect. WOW was this good. Everything was excellent. Tea leaves salad and samosa soup were good starters - especially the salad (jalapeños on the side for us). My husband ordered "safe" walnut shrimp and loved it. We had fiery chicken and tofu (less fiery for us) - amazing, fried fish (amazing), and mango chicken (very good), and loved every bite. We will be back! read more

My ratings of the food is below, but the people were very friendly! 5/5 coconut rice - I loved the taste of their coconut rice. The best I've tried in the Bay so far. 6/5 Palata - You would making a mistake if you don't order this. The chicken curry that you dip the palata in is basically gold. 3/5 Sesame Beef - It was good, but not as crispy as I'd like it. I just thought it was average. 4/5 Walnut Shrimp - The walnut shrimp was solid. Flavorful and the sauce is good. 4/5 Garlic noodles - We went her based on the recommendation of the garlic noodles. I hosted a baby shower and the celebrant wanted Burmese food. I'd actually never eaten at Royal Rangoon before but as soon and I inquired about having them cater the party they were quick to respond. Lin was extremely helpful in creating a menu for our party that fit everyone's dietary needs as well as fit within our budget. She arranged for someone to drop off the food for a delivery fee which worked out great. Not only was the food delicious, but we were able to feed all of our guests and also have many leftovers. We ordered the tea leaf salad, garlic noodles, lemon grass chicken and jalapeño tofu. Many thanks to Lin and the team at Royal Rangoon. My son and I decided to try Royal Rangoon as we both enjoy Asian food. The staff was so attentive and accommodating. The food was delicious and served immediately from the kitchen. The prix fixe is a little expensive ($70) for two people but well worth it. We did not order any alcohol nor dessert as we were totally satisfied with the appetizer, entrees, and hot tea. Soooo unbelievably bland. I ordered their Tea Leaf Salad, bland. Chicken Kebat, which tasted like onions and chicken, none of the spice or herbs came through. Country Style Lamb Curry which tasted like undercooked lamb in brown sauce. The Northern tofu was the only thing that was nice. I also ordered spicy and it was very much not spicy. This was the most disappointing food experience food I have had in a long time. I wanted it to be good cause the prices are better than Burma Superstar and they're down to earth while my experience is that Burma Superstar has a very high opinion of themselves. But I guess I'll just have to deal with the high maintenance nonsense of Burma Superstar cause at least their food has flavor. read more

This place is awesome! Everything about it is great and in my opinion beats Burma Superstar by a long shot. This is a nice family owned restaurant that is cozy, but not too cozy and has great food and service. I love Burmese food - it's like a fusion of India, Southeast Asian, and Chinese food. Lots of spices and flavors, but not too much that it's overwhelming. Things you must try: Tea Leaf Salad (trust me people, this lives up to the hype), Garlic Eggplant, Roti with Chicken Curry, Samosas, and don't pass up their lamb/fish dishes. This place is great for any occasion and there is something to eat for everyone - kids, vegetarians, picky eaters. I really liked all the veggie dishes they have and all the amazing flavors that they use. Their food is slightly on the oily side and their spicy dishes aren't very spicy, but other than that I loved all the food here. The service is really friendly, they don't rush you and are are constantly filling waters and checking up. Street parking is available and is pretty easy to find, they take credit cards! read more

We came here on a Tuesday evening and it got fairly crowded! It's excellent for many occasions: casual catchups, romantic evenings, reunions, and I'd say even solo dining. :) Tea leaf salad (ordered after seeing Yelpers raving about this): 5/5. Addicting! I love the shrimp powder, soy nuts, crunchy peanuts, and moist tea leaves. This dish has great texture and strong, aromatic flavors. A real treat! Mango chicken: 4/5. Mango and basil were cooked well with the chicken (which seemed to be white meat). However, it was a little too sweet, which made the dish flavor seem one-dimensional and a bit forgettable. Lamb kebat: 2/5. Meat was too rubbery. I think there was a fair amount of fat or collagen in the cut but I couldn't tell. They seated us and said we had an hour and some to complete our dining experience. All good!!! The FOOD: The Tea Leaf Salad was very delicious as were the Plata. For our entree dishes we got, Pumpkin Salmon Stew - tasted like water and absolutely NO FLAVOR and highly disappointing for the $$. The mixed vegetables in curry stew, the veggies were good but the stew juice again, flavorless. The Basil Lamb dish was by far the best as well as the coconut rice. It was a very disappointing adventure and no will not return. Do you not taste your food before you put it out? You might want to try that. read more

Food didn't take too long and inside looked cute despite them only doing takeout. We were super excited because the menu looked amazing- so many options, vegan accommodations, and interesting dishes. I have been anticipating a visit to this Burmese restaurant for quite some time. Finally, I was able to persuade my friends to come join me for dinner. The rectangular interior was captivating, and came with different shades of brown to couple with dim lighting, cultural artifacts, and three separate dining areas. The place was crowded with hot plates coming out of the kitchen on a consistent basis. Echoing Bay Area's enthusiasm for Burmese cuisine, I too, was expecting to be wowed. The Tea Leaf Salad ($11) came with tea leaves, fried garlic, beans, peanuts, sesame seeds, lettuce, tomato, and dried shrimp. The salad was well composed with lots of textures and flavors nicely intermingled. Comparing to the one from Burma SuperStar, it also lacked the kick that brightens the flavors. The salad was good, but not the best I have ever tasted. The Pumpkin Salmon Stew ($15) came with pumpkin, salmon, onions, garlic, ginger, and other spices. The stew was filled with chunky pumpkin and fresh salmon to the brim. The broth was creamy, complex, and delicious, but the pumpkin could be cooked softer to bring some finesse to the dish. The Chicken and Shrimp Bryani ($16) came with braised chicken and shrimp baked in a clay pot with biryani, raisins, nuts, and spices. The chicken came in one humongous piece, making it difficult to share. The shrimp was tender and delightful, complicated by the subtle sweet and nutty flavors. However, the chicken was not fully cooked near the bones, prompting us to call the server to bring it back to the kitchen. When the dish came back to the table, we noticed it was still the same piece of chicken. We were disappointed, and wished the restaurant could have remade the dish from scratch. The portion on the Coconut Rice ($2.50) was too little to share, but it was sufficient to round out all the complex flavors. Overall, prices on these dishes were steep, and lacked the robust spicy sensations of Burma SuperStar. Service was decent but not memorable. Even though our water was consistently refilled, we were still not pleased with how they had handled the clay pot. With the number of Burmese restaurants in the Bay Area, I don't think I will be returning any time soon. read more

Anyplace that claims to dish something similar to Burma Superstar is worth a visit. Rangoon was packed on a Tuesday night, but still no wait time like it's popular competitor. First impressions: BIG dining room. Two of them, actually. Good for groups or intimate dates, with lots of booth seating. Plus, the menu is great for sharing, we found out. They had 4 types of house wine for $5/glass, a "liquidation sale" we were told. Happy to help! They have an entire menu of vegetarian dishes, so we tried the spicy tofu with vegetables, sauteed eggplant & garlic, and the "Palata" (hand tossed multi-layer bread served with chicken or veggie curry sauce). It had the feel and flavor of a smashed, fried croissant and really filled us up before our other dishes arrived. Great for sharing, but beware of stuffing yourself on this popular dish alone. The eggplant & spicy tofu dishes were also tasty, but reminded me of glorified PF Changs (thick sweet-spicy sauces). The coconut rice was not distinctly coconutty, but a necessary base for all that saucy-ness. Fun place, flavorful food, and great prices for date night. I think Burma might be slightly more "gourmet" but you'll pay more and wait longer for it. Great Plan B, right here! read more

I am so pleased this place is less than a mile away from me. Now the only question is how fat can one get off eating Burmese food. Check with me in a year to find out!!! I will note, it wasn't perfect, some things Burma Superstar still does a bit better, BUT their generous portions and NO LINES gave it that extra star. Prognostications aside let's break down the dishes: Complimentary Shrimp Chips - even these are better than normal shrimp chips. I think it's just cause they're greasier, but in like a really good way. Tea Leaf Salad - especially good here and on par with burma superstar and better than burmese kitchen. Really bright tasting and the tea tastes freshly fermented if that makes sense. Samosa Soup - good but not as good as BSS. The samosas were just soggier which is really the tricky part. Maybe it just needed to come out quicker? Palata - The curry was great, the pancake was decent. But the curry was so good, I'll likely get it every time. Nan Gyi Dok - It's like a coconut sauce noodle what they mix up in front of you. I really dislike hardboiled eggs which is a major ingredient and somehow still enjoyed this dish. Village Catfish - I've had this at burmese kitchen in SF and it was better here. More catfish, better texture, really should have got some rice for this. Salmon Crisp - think general tso's salmon. Originally we were gonna go to a different restaurant, but we couldn't find parking so we drove ourselves here and were lucky enough to find parking near this restaurant. The food and service here is great. Burmese food is yummy and yummy. The restaurant itself was not necessarily busy, there plenty of empty tables in the dinning room. Made it easy for us to get a table for 2. My mom and I both ordered Curry Dishes and loved them both! Country Style Beef Burmese Pork Curry Both of us liked our entrees we ordered. They were both, tender, juicy and very flavorful. It was $1.50 for a bowl of Jasmine Rice, so we ordered 2 to compliment our meal. These were both good dishes. My mom liked her entree too. The waiter was very nice. My mom and I both have Yelp accounts, so we both checked in via the app, and the waiter allowed us to both take advantage of the Yelp check In offer. So we got 2 Cokes on them. That was nice of them and partially a smart move, ha! double the reviews possibly, lol. Overall, it was a good experience. This is the first time I have ever had Burmese food, and Rangoon definitely set the bar high. I am officially a super fan of Burmese cuisine, and cannot believe I've been missing it in my life so far. Rangoon should start calling themselves Rangood. The service at this place was phenomenal. We came 30 min before closing time, but the servers were still just as friendly and attentive. We never felt rushed one bit. Seeing as it was all our first time having Burmese food (a cross between Thai and Chinese food), our amazing server Lin walked us through his favorite dishes and recommended the most popular. Lin was extremely helpful and patient, his amazing service adding to our memorable experience at Rangoon. Ambiance here was a lot more upscale than I expected. The decor was super clean and neat. They featured a nice bar and everything was furnished in a beautiful mahogany wood with big mirrors. It is the type of restaurant where you can go with large parties, go on a romantic date, or even just bring your parents to. We all shared a Tea Leaf Salad, which is a must-have. It definitely ranks as one of my favorite salads of all time. I'm sure you're wondering, how good can a salad be? Well, you have to order this to see. It's something different and flavorful with many unique ingredients ( fried garlic, jalapeno, fermented tea leaves, etc) that worked together harmoniously. I ordered the Nan Gyi Dok, which was a coconut chicken sauce atop a bed of noodles with fried onions and an egg. I don't know what magic Rangoon adds to their noodles, but they were perfectly springy and not soggy. Something you and I cannot reproduce at home. Overall, I would recommend: Nan Gyi Dok (Coconut Chicken noodles) Tea Leaf Salad (must-have) Minted Jalapeno Chicken Chicken and Shrimp Biryani Coconut Rice (must-have) My friend kept raving about the Palata, so I will make sure to try that for dessert next time! Finally, the manager/owner of the restaurant approached us at the end and made sure we knew that they gave a student discount. This place could not get any better. But Rangoon Super Stars, and BUILD Pizzeria the previous night, were epic meals and finally I have my faith back!! Get the Mint Soda. Best $4 I've ever spent. Never had Burmese food in my life and I didn't even know there was such a thing up until this year, shocker, I know. I've had people tell me to try out Burma Superstar but my Bestfriend warned me that it's usually packed and there's typically a line so I'm glad she found this spot and I got to pop my Burmese cherry haha PARKING: There's metered street parking in front of the restaurant, I think the cut off was 6? Maybe 7? I got there after 7 and it wasn't taking any dinero. Meters take coins and card. There's also residential parking around the restaurant but I do suggest carpooling for big parties. Once you walk in, they have an intimate room, I walked by pretty quickly but I think there was also a bar in that room. The other room, where I was taken, was more casual and the lighting was a lot better but still dim. SERVICE: Everyone was nice, quaint and prompt. Our server was knowledgable so that helped me out when it came to certain things on the menu. Every server, busser, and food runner played an essential part during our experience. The service made me feel as if I was at a high star restaurant, getting waited on and served as if one. PRICING: Dishes are $10+ but for the most part, I felt like each dish was worth every single penny. FOOD: Tea Leaf Salad($12)- we got the vegetarian option, no shrimp. Every item in this dish paired perfectly well with each other. This dish is first set up destructively and then a server stops by and tosses the salad in front of you. A classy touch in a laid back place. I was actually surprised that I really enjoyed this dish because I'm 'picky'. Chicken Kebat($14)- this was one of the dishes that I had to ask about. If I was going to try Burmese food for the first time, I wanted to get dishes that weren't common to me. It's just marinated chicken with an array of spices. At first bite, bland, but squeeze the lemon that's provided and it adds a new world of flavor. It was good, but it wasn't something I would order again. Nan Gyi Dok($11)- basically rice noodles with coconut sauce and other spices. This was also tossed and it was also delicious. This dish was definitely my fave out of everything. The coconut chicken sauc was very flavorful. Definitely a must get! Overall, I don't know if I'll stop by Burma Superstar anytime soon, I really did enjoy my experience here at Royal Rangoon. Meeting a girl from OkCupid here on a lunch date several weeks ago, and neither of us too particularly hungry, we get the: * Tea Leaf Salad - Again, a must at any Burmese restaurant. Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of their preparation, which seemed a little too... tart? It was hard to put my finger on why, but the flavors just felt a little off. Was still mostly enjoyable though. * Nan Gyi Dok - A noodle dish that I've ordered at other Burmese places (or similar to, at least), so I was actually expecting wide flour noodles, rather than rice noodles. While that wasn't a huge issue, the noodles did seem a little overcooked and a little too mushy for my liking. Flavor wise, also not great, but not bad. If I actually lived out in Berkeley, I could see myself eating at RSS every so often. But given that I'm on the other side of the bridge, which has the likes of Mandalay and Mingalaba within the same traveling distance, there's little reason for me to come back here again. Think Burma Superstar... but with no lines, easier parking, but just as amazing food. Rangoon Super Stars doesn't have the hype that Burma Superstar has, but definitely matches them in quality! The proprietor has an extensive background in Burmese restaurants, having been part of the Rangoon Ruby restaurant in South Bay for many years. Every dish I've had here has incredible flavor, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is very comfortable. I'm so glad they were finally able to get their liquor license too :) I've heard that the restaurant will be changing their name soon. So look out for the same restaurant, with the same owner, but with a different name, in 2016! read more

I've always love Burma Superstars so having a similar restaurant closer to campus is a definitely a big plus! The restaurant is huge, lots of seating and can accommodate way more parties than Burma. The decor is very authentic and gives off a nice vibe.The food has been a hit/miss on some occasions, but it's pretty much the same as Burma. (+++) Tea Leaf Salad. Don't ever pass up on the tea leaf salad! This dish never gets old for me. It's such a refreshing dish with so many different flavors packed into it. The whole dish is a nice combination of a nice sweet, salty, citris-y, light taste. The tea definitely packs a lot of flavors (though you can't even tell that it's tea leaves!) I think the shrimp powder added a perfect touch to the overall dish. I also love how the waiter would always give a nice presentation/speech about the overall dish before mixing it! :) (/) Rainbow Salad. I was a bit disappointed with the rainbow salad. Definitely should have gotten the tea leaf salad instead. This dish lacked flavors to it (it's lighter than the tea leaf salad in terms of flavors) There were many different types of noodles in it, but I feel like the noodles tasted very bland and did not absorb enough flavors. (+) Samosas. I didn't expect to like this appetizer so much but I did! Probably one of the best samosas I've ever had. The filling was potatoes and onions but I honestly couldn't even taste the potatoes ( I thought it was chickpeas!) Potatoes fillings are usually very overpowering and makes samosas really heavy but this one was super light! (++) Garlic Noodle ! Definite one of my favorite noodle dishes (better than the Pad Thai in my opinion). The flat noodles is perfect and is not overpowering/make you full from all the carbs. I've always had this dish with shrimp but I heard the duck is also good! (++) Mango shrimp! Love love love this dish. Definitely a must-try if you're a seafood lover. The contrast in the spicy/salty shrimp and the sweet mango makes this dish a perfect dinner entree. You can also get this dish with chicken/ beef/ tofu! A+ for having so many different options. (/) Garlic Eggplant. Typical eggplant dish. It didn't seemed to wow me as much as the mango shrimp dish but this definitely a favorite for vegetarians. Eggplant is cooked perfectly and the sauce is delicious (very similar to the mango shrimp sauce...) (/) Lemongrass Tofu. I have mixed feelings about this dish. I expected more out of it from the description, but it turned out to be basically stir-fry tofu and vegetables with a lemongrass tofu sauce. Nothing too special..... but still a good option to try if you're a vegetarian! (/) Jasmine coconut rice. I've had hit/miss for this. On my second time here, the rice was really dry and the jasmine rice was not chewy at all. However, you should definitely get a bowl of this with any of the main entrees as opposed to the regular rice. (+++) Burmese Milk Tea! Definitely worth a try if you're here and want to try something new! I've never had milk tea like this before! It's similar to Thai Iced Tea but not quite. The tea flavor is very strong but not overpowering and the milk is very rich. Can't really describe so you should definitely get it and see for yourself :) Overall, I'm very pleased with this place. It's a nice restaurant to serve all kind of food-lovers, from meatlovers to vegetarians/vegans. This place is very vegetarian friend because there was a separate menu with just vegetarian options! A+ We came right when it opened at 5PM and the placed got packed pretty quickly within an hour. They take reservation so if you're planning on coming with a big party then it's best to reserve ahead of time. The service can be pretty slow during rush hour so you have to be patient with them. There's plenty of street parking around the area. It is kind of far from campus but definitely worth a try if you've never had Burmese food before! read more

The palata with coconut chicken curry was the high point of my meal at Rangoon Super Stars. It comes as an appetizer, which I found perfectly sized for two. I would also eat the garlic noodles with BBQ pork again but I wouldn't come rushing back to do so. I found the tofu with pea shoots gloppy and unsuitable for leftovers the next day (typically I'm quite excited about Burmese leftovers). This place, as said by Vivian D., is like Burma Super Star's less hip older sibling. The decor is more traditional and it just feels classier and more grown-up than Burma SS. The best part about this place though is the size of the restaurant, and the fact that I can make reservations and walk in right to my table at that time. No more writing my name down and then sitting outside for 40 minutes nonsense. Our server was super star nice and helpful in offering suggestions. In my famished state, I wanted to order everything, but I decided on the nan gyi dok, since I enjoyed it so much at Burma SS. In the same fashion, it arrived with the separate ingredients on the plate and our server mixed it up for me. It was pretty tasty! Just as I remembered, except the rice noodles were a touch too overcooked and squishy for my taste. But even the cold leftovers which I ate in my room after getting home late, were still pretty darn good. Oh and the shrimp/fish chips they give you as a pre-app app, are delicious! More flavorful than I expected. Definitely would come here instead of Burma SS now, purely for the ability to make reservations. read more

Clearly the restaurant's name is a pathetic combination of the names of the most popular Burmese restaurants of the Bay Area, Rangoon Ruby and Burma Superstar. But the food is still really really good, and that's what's important, if not *quite* on par with the restaurants it's imitating. We had an all veggie meal, following the lead of our vegetarian friend. She LOVED the tea leaf salad and thought other versions were too citrusy and that this one was more garlicky. I thought it was the equal of Rangoon Ruby (where we eat frequently). My husband liked it slightly less. The samosa soup was lacking... something. Rangoon Ruby's is magical and possibly the best soup I have ever tasted. This was no Rangoon Ruby's. The northern fried tofu on the other hand was just as good as Rangoon Ruby's, which is to say, excellent. (Can you tell we eat at Rangoon Ruby often?) My friend and husband loved the sesame tofu but I found it too sweet. I felt like I could get both the sesame tofu and the eggplant in garlic sauce at a Chinese restaurant which for me defeats the purpose of going to a Burmese restaurant. The guys who worked there looked at their watches as soon as we walked through the door. We still had over 35 minutes before they were due to close from lunch service. As soon as the waiter came to our table he told us they close at 2:30, then added that this only gives us about 30 minutes before we will have to leave. He then went back talking to his friend, not bothering to keep an eye on us for our order...or even to get 1 or 2 dishes started. Food was very yummy. I shared a Vegan Samosa Salad and the Tofu & Veggie stir fry with a friend. Both offerings were delicious; however the prices were less palatable. The salad was $11 and the Tofu/Veggie was $12 (I think), but both portions were quite small. With the salad, we got 5 cups of food and with the tofu/veggie, we got about 2. There's a place on Franklin St. in Oakland called Nature Vegetarian Restaurant that has FANTASTIC vegan/vegetarian chinese food and their Basil Green Beans (or something like that) tastes just as delicious (if not more so) than Rangoon Super Stars' Tofu/Veggie. Their portions are larger and much cheaper (think.... double Rangoon for half the price). So, if you're craving Chinese style foods, head to Nature Vegetarian in Oakland. read more

I love this restaurant for its food and friendly staff and ownership. Royal Rangoon is the true definition of a great neighborhood restaurant. Tun, the owner, is sensitive to his customers' needs, and is always interested in their well-being. The food is very fresh and tasty, and we feel very satisfied when we leave. Currently, we are in "take-out" mode. The preparation is quick and well organized, and I feel very safe in ordering food from Royal Rangoon. My favorite Burmese restaurant in the east bay. This is a truly authentic Burmese restaurant. We love all the dishes here - country style beef curry, nangyi dok, tea leaf salad, coconut noodle soup. The staff is extremely friendly and even made a point to cheer up my kids who were having a rough day. I prefer this over Burma Superstar which has 3x the wait but the food quality is equally as good. read more
