I was the girl who had the sandwich-gasm mentioned by Alyssa H. That was seriously the most fantastic sandwich I have ever eaten. I went back a few weeks ago with my intoxicated friend, and when he decided to make me dance with him (to Credence Clearwater Revival, of all things!), the guys working there didn't seem to mind. They just chuckled and made fun of me for not being able to eat my whole sandwich. It is a little bit on the spendy side, but when all is said and done, it's less expensive (and much tastier!) than a Subway or a Quizno's. A very serviceable sandwich. I had the Italian Grinder with salami, pepperoni, ham and all the rest of the normal additions (I appreciated the option to add lettuce and jalapenos for free) . The bread was well toasted and buttery, but a bit too light and airy, I like something more substantial. I really enjoyed the grinder sauce and the amount of fillings was enough to satisfy, but not so much as to make you look like a blue ribbon pig going at the slop bucket. Unfortunately for RG, it's located extremely close to a number of other great sandwich spots which would likely attract my attention before I would go back for another grinder. I wouldn't make it a destination, but it's not a bad place to check off the list of Seattle sandwich experiences. The service was also very friendly and I'd really like to go back for their interesting gelato flavors, such as jalapeno strawberry and basil pineapple. read more

I had to go with the OG-Italian grinder. I could not have asked for anything more. It was amazing, more than enough to fill me w/o chips, included a soda or bottled water, and the customer service was great! This place is the total package. The bread has been smeared with this great oil and herb concoction that brings out all the flavors of the sandwich. I just started working for a company in Fremont, and I've spent the last couple weeks looking around for the best lunch spots. Found reviews for this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The Food: I had the French Dip and it was great! I'm sure I should have gotten one of their signature grinders to truly capture the essence of the place, so I'll make sure to do that next time. The Drinks: A can soda is included with purchase of a sandwich, so the prices overall are pretty good! The Service: Friendly and pretty fast. You can call ahead to order, so I'll do that next time. Issues: The only issue, as noted by other posters is that they charge a $.50 CC surcharge under $20. Not a huge deal, but seems a little extreme these days, since nobody carries cash anymore. Overall, I'm a fan of the place. I'll just remember to bring cash. read more

You want a good sandwich without the vegan/organic fanfare (and price) and without the fast food sadness? This is your place. Order something straight from the menu or personalize any of the choices ... it's sure to be tasty and filling. The place is tiny, but there is plenty of outdoor seating (very nice when it's not raining!) and some seating inside. The people are super friendly and happy! And although it takes about 10-15 minutes to get your grinder, they ARE actually working as fast as they can. The reason why it takes so long to get your sandwich is because it goes in the oven to get nice and toasty and delicious. Don't forget to get a scoop of gelato for dessert! It's not REALLY gelato. My husband is from Italy, born and raised there, and I've been there several times and Royal Grinders doesn't really serve gelato. They tried, but it's a bit too cold and creamy to be gelato. It's more like regular ice cream, but it's still delicious! And the flavors are pretty much what you would find at the gelataio in Italy, so I guess they get bonus points for that. read more

This review is only for the gelato (and service). BEST GELATO AROUND! I'm not very big on sweets, but this place definitely made me want more! And that almost never happens! The lenny scoop (cherry sized dollop) of another flavor of your choosing is a sweet addition! I will definitely come back for the locally made (from scratch!!!) gelato! YUMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! Finally, a worthy sandwich! Yummy sandwiches, toasted to perfect crunchiness and loaded with goodies, plus a free beverage and gelato, too, in case you're not full! They make a veggie sandwich that isn't just a meat sandwich without the meat - they add carrots, olives and other veggies. I only wish they had a larger array of toppings - some roasted red peppers, sundried tomatos, avocado perhaps?? And an expanded drink selection would be nice - right now it's just coke, diet coke, 7up and squirt. Some iced tea and fruit juice would be nice. Or maybe instead of a free soda, a discount on some Honest Tea or something. Friendly guys behind the counter, and tables outside for leisurely sandwich enjoyment on a nice day. This place is beside Sinbad Express so after my beef shawarma, I was tempted to try this place. It was a nice sunny day and they have table and chairs outside. I felt like I'm on vacation. Soaking under the sun while licking a gelato feels like I'm in Firenze (ofcourse, exaggerated). Why 3 stars? I ordered the flavor that I haven't tried before which is pineapple basil. I didn't like it. Taste wise, it's ok but I thought it's "icy". I tried my friend's gelato and the same thing, it's slushy. Worth a try. read more

My girlfriend and I came to Royal to try the Gelato after a walk at the Ballard Docks. The staff was super friendly and invited us right away to try their flavors. We are really picky, and they patiently offered us generous samples as they were accommodating different customers. They have about twelve flavors to pick from, all the "must-haves" like Vanilla, Cappuccino, Lemon, Strawberry are there but nothing exotic. They get their Gelato from a place at Pike Place Market, and it's made entirely from scratch, and let me tell you, you can really tell the difference. I got one scoop of Pistachio and one scoop of lemon. The Gelato was super creamy and tasted very natural, not too sweet and not too blend. Especially the Pistachio tasted incredible, with big chunks of Pistachios. The portion are very generous, especially for Gelato. The prices were also pretty reasonable ($10 for three scoops total). If you ever want to try some local Gelato, this is the place to go! read more

D E L I C I O U S It is really difficult to get a good, hot sandwich at most places that are vegetarian / vegan. Many restaurants assume that you would only be happy with a bunch of vegetables plucked straight from the soil, marginally rinsed, and stuffed between two pieces of bread. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled on Royal Grinders in a fit of desperation (to feed my child before he went full-on, low-blood-sugar rage-out mode). His palate is so ridiculous it isn't worth reviewing what he ate (bread and cheese, not even heated up. Please don't ask). Let me go on and on about what I ate, though... The Field Roast sub. I didn't make any mods, ordered exactly as is. Field Roast sausages have that same herby goodness that Celebration Roast (which you can buy at the grocery and prepare at the holidays like I do), but a whole lot more spice. And these sandwich makers know EXACTLY how to enhance that flavor, with fresh tomatoes and yummy pickles and black olives and complementary cheese and a white sauce and a bunch more spices tossed into the soft inside of the bread. IT WAS A VEGETARIAN PARTY FOR MY MOUTH. Cannot recommend this sandwich enough. Happy, happy day. Sandwich hangover. These people know what they are doing. read more

Warning: if you're coming here around lunch time, be prepared for a significant wait, even if you call ahead. That said, it's worth waiting for. I recommend the Crown Grinder, with turkey, ham, provolone, swiss, red onions, olives, pepperoncinis, and the garlicky creamy grinder sauce. The bread was nicely toasted, exactly the right texture. The sandwich didn't look very large, but turned out to be really filling, and delicious to the last messy bite. The gelato is impressive, both in terms of quality and variety. I tried the risotto/rice pudding flavor with a lenny scoop (ah, Lenin) of the rosa/rose flavor. The rice pudding gelato tasted like a fancy, rich type of vanilla; okay, but probably not something I'll get again. The rose gelato, on the other hand... this may not sound appetizing to you, but as I excitedly described it to my friend, it tasted like fancy bathroom soap smells. The rose gelato is refreshing, delicate, and fragrant.... in other words, amazing. I definitely intend to go back, to try other gelato flavors and fill up on sandwiches. Honestly, though, I think that I'll only get one or the other in a visit. After a sandwich, I could barely eat my gelato. read more

Mind Blown! I work in Ballard and am always on the hunt for lunch options. We called in our sandwiches and they were ready in about 15 minutes (pretty standard time considering it was take out) we ordered the Royal Grinder and the Pastrami Grinder and they gave us some "Ying Yang" sauce to try - OUTSTANDING! The bread was fantastic, crunchy and soft - everything you would expect from a grinder roll. The pastrami and roast beef wasn't overly salty and very lean. These guys put delicious combination of meat and cheese and veggies and whatnot IN BETWEEN pieces of toasty bread. It's like having a 19 year old Ukrainian ballerina dance across your tongue. The meats are sliced at a perfect thickness. Not too thin, not thick. It's not overly oily and that zesty grinder sauce is like... icing on a sandwich cake. This place is easy to miss, especially with the huge Lenin statue outside, but the statue also serves as a landmark when directing other people to this place. First of all, the service is great. I don't know if he's the owner, but the employee who served us was enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful from the moment we walked in (and to every other customer who came in after us). I got the Italian combo and loved every bit of it. It cost about $7.50 for a sandwich and soda/bottled water. I especially like how the sandwiches aren't super oily (or too dry). While living in Seattle, Royal Grinders was mere minutes from me and i definitely took advantage of it. I visited @ least once a week and especially after more than 4-5 days out of town, would be my first stop after leaving the airport. I went down here for hangover food this afternoon, based off of all the glowing reviews here on Yelp... and I am sooo glad that I did. First off, this place has a great location, right behind the Lenin statue in Fremont, with a lovely large patio and lots of tables - a really nice place to sit and enjoy these delectable sandwiches or a cup of their gelato. Their dining room is small but there is plenty of seating as long as you don't mind sitting along a bar with other diners. I ordered the Italian, as that seems to have the most rave reviews here. I was not disappointed, though if you're expecting to receive a really over-stuffed sammich, I'd ask for extra meat or veggies (their prices for adding "extra" of whatever seem very reasonable, especially in comparison with a lot of other places... around $1 to $1.50 depending on what you're getting extra of). I did wait almost 15 minutes for the sandwich, which isn't bad - as the sign posted in the dining room indicates, they do have to cook it in an oven. And besides, you can't rush these things if you want them done right. Apparently you can call your order in ahead if you don't feel like waiting. While I waited, I was impressed at the level of service I saw. A couple were hesitating over the menu, so one of the gentlemen working there gave him the rundown on how their menu works and how the customer could customize an order if they wished. Someone was lingering near the gelato counter, and the young lady working the register hopped over immediately to ask if they'd like to try any samples. My sandwich was divine. Half of it was enough to sate my hunger, though it still isn't the biggest sandwich I've ever seen, it still seemed like a great deal considering the quality. All that meaty, cheesy, melty, ooey-gooey goodness. The bread was especially good - crispy on the outside from the oven, but soft and chewy on the inside the way I wish the bread at Paseo's was. In fact, even though this place makes an extra mile walk for me, I would far rather hoof it down to Royal Grinders the next time I'm craving a decadent sandwich than the mere 2 blocks from my place to Paseo. Next time, I plan to try their gelato. Solid five stars. read more

3 1/2 stars was what I was originally thinking but I decided on 4 because of the service I got here. I came to shoot the Lenin statue for my documentary and directly behind the statue is this tiny place. But the Yelp reviews! So I stepped in and they asked me if it was my 1st time here. Told them it was my 1st time in Seattle. They recommended the Italian with turkey instead of ham and jalapenos with it. They also gave me red sauce on the side. I watched 3 people work on my sandwich and take other orders while joshing around with each other. I have to say that they really seemed to love their jobs, loved working with each other and loved serving customers. You can watch them from start to finish make your sandwich as the place is really small and you can stand directly right next to the counter. I watched them make mine and then throw it in the toaster. After it came out I thought it was ready but they spread their special sauce on it then threw it back in the toaster! I've never seen a sandwich toasted twice. Man, this sandwich was going to come out crunchy! It was, and it's good. Not the best sandwich I've ever had but it's good. And about $8. The red sauce is a sweet chili sauce which I liked and recommend. Get it on the side. One sandwich will fill up most people and there's free cool water in a small cooler in the corner for you. If you use your credit card you'll get charged an extra $.50 but only once in day. So you place more orders then they'll be no more extra fees. After my 1st sandwich, I was curious so wanted to try another one. I told them I wanted something with a completely different taste and they recommended the teriyaki chicken sandwich. Again, it's good but not amazing. So food's 3 1/2 stars but I really dug the people who worked there. It's a good thing to love where you work. read more
