A friend talked us into trying this place out, and the moment the Italian Grinder touched my lips, I knew no other sandwich could ever compare. The meats, the cheese, the crusty but soft toasty bread. Mmmm. Chase it down with a FREE beverage, and MAYBE some amazing gelato, and you'll be in heaven. Note: This isn't a quicky sub from Subway... You are going to end up waiting about 10-15 minutes for your delectable sandwich. The reason for this is they broil them in the oven melding all the flavors together. If you get struck by a serious hunger strike, you don't have to call 911! Instead, head on down to Royal Grinders and roundhouse kick it with a sledgehammer of a sandwich. It's a known fact that any of the dozen or so different paninis will effectively attack and abate any aggressive appetite. With a free soda or bottled water to accompany any sandwich, you're spending as much or even less than established sandwich factories charge. The housemade "grinder sauce" gives the grinders a tangy grinderness, which I presume means you want to grind the sandwich with your teeth so much that none of it is wasted. To grind is to savor completely and to the max. Shakespeare said that. I haven't grinded much of the gelato here, but I did try a sample of one that tasted exactly like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, which is awesome, because I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I have been here a couple times and am a little surprised I haven't written a review yet. What's the matter with me? I am so stupid! The sandwiches here are awesome. I usually get the Italian or Royal Grinder which are both amazing. I have also had their French Dip that is pretty good and I had a bite of my girlfriend's panini which was really good too. All their sandwiches have a lot of good flavor, but not overwhelmingly that makes it ruin the sandwich. On nice days you can sit outside and people watch...and eat your sandwich. So good! I ordered from them on postmates and the food got to me quickly and it was still warm and crispy from getting toasted (shout out to Benjamin on postmates for being a fast driver). I had the Italian grinder and the meat was so good and the sandwich was juicy and flavorful. Prices are decent, not overly priced but not super cheap either. Ain't nothing wrong with a little bump and grind(er). And ain't nothing wrong with the grinders at this establishment. Good bread, generous portions of meat and cheese, toasted appropriately. A few steps above Subway and Quiznos. A little pricy, but decent for the size of the sandwich. Good, but not special. If you're looking for a Paseo's midnight Cuban great, then you won't find it here. But if you are in downtown Fremont in need of a sammy, then come here. I have to admit that before I got into Royal Grinders, I was expecting an expensive Quizno's. I'm glad I was wrong. Yeah, they serve toasted subs but these are crazy delicious and at about $7, you get a big and filling sub and drink. The establishment is pretty small inside with only a couple of barstools. However, there is plenty of tables and chairs outside in front of the restaurant next to the Lenin statue. The sandwiches are packed with meat and cheese and are hot out of the oven. I've tried most of the varieties and I seem to always go back to their signature sandwich, the Royal Grinder. This sandwich is loaded with roast beef, ham and a couple of different cheeses. It's so tasty that I devour it in a couple of minutes (well, that's pretty much the same with any of my meals.....but still). And if you're in the mood for a dessert after the sub, you can get a nice cold, refreshing gelato from the display case. read more

Tonight I got total bliss in a cup for $4.75. I had a scoop of Lychee gelato, a scoop of pineapple-basil, and a lenny scoop of lavender. I'll be honest the lavender tasted like creamy popurri - it was good, but I'm glad I got a small bite. The pineapple basil was so incredible. The flavors mingled together perfectly and created a sweet/savory citrus combination that made me melt. I'm hit and miss with Lychee, but this was DIVINE! Sweet chunks of lychee mixed in a light creamy, zesty gelato. BLISS!!!! Keep up the good work guys! - Why is it I only see good looking dudes working in this place? I walked in and I was greeted immediately and they asked if I was new and gave me great recommendations. To those who complained about the so called "wait" are crazy, it takes time to create that great of a toasted sandwich. I got the Italian Grinder and the sandwich was so tasty. Super warm French bread that didn't get soggy with the sauces. The cheese was melty and coincided with the meats really nicely. The gelato here is unique and has a nice texture. It isn't light and fluffy like a lot of gelato places that claim to be authentic Italian gelato. The gianduia and roasted almond caramel creation were excellent. I also tried the cinnamon (which is usually my go-to if a place offers it) but I found it was a very delicate flavor that I couldn't really taste as much as I would have liked... which makes me sad because cinnamon gelato is YUMMY! Cute place in the heart of Fremont with lots of outdoor seating. They do this thing called the "lenny scoop", which is a dollop about the size of a cherry on top of your order for free. This is a great way to get a taste of something you aren't sure of, or just don't want an entire scoop of. read more

The service can be a little slow, but if you're in no rush, this is the sandwich shop to hit up if you're ever wanting one in Fremont. Vegetarian/vegan options are plentiful here. Tempeh bacon sandwich with cheese was to die for, it was loaded up with peppers, olives, carrots, tempeh, avocado, swiss cheese, and some spicy red sauce. Bread has been and will always be my one true love, and the bread here is super fresh and was toasted just the right amount. Customer service was great, guy behind the counter was super helpful and gave us a run down of the most popular sandwiches. Would eat here again. read more

Best sub/grinder sandwich I've had in Seattle so far (well, Paseo is good, but not in the same category of grinder I don't think). This is a hole-in-the-wall place near the Lenin statue. There is no seating inside pretty much so stake a claim at an outdoor table before ordering so you can have a place to sit (or order to go). Staff is really cool and friendly. Helped suggest our orders and we were happy. Big sandwiches, delicious bread and meats. All around a really fantastic experience at Royal Grinders. Good sandwiches, not great ones. My bread was a little tough and I think I would have been happier with another sandwich. I got the Chicken Teriyaki to try it. Even the cashier was less than excited that I ordered that one. The chicken was a little rubbery. If I wasn't starving and in a hurry, I probably would have just tossed it and either reordered or went some place else. There are seats inside, but space is limited. Luckily, outside was super nice. Good, but it definitely didn't knock my socks off or anything. Got the pesto chicken. Service was fine, pretty quick for what I'd been led to expect from previous reviews. Grinder was a 3-star A-OK - for 9 bucks, it didn't have all that much meat on it. I agree with another previous reviewer that the herby bread kind of overpowers everything on it, and with pesto-covered chicken that's saying something. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. NOT better than Paseo, esp. if you've become used to enough chunks of meat falling out all over the place while you eat that you could practically construct a second sandwich with them. read more

The rave reviews here--and the fact that I now live only a few blocks away--made me check out this tiny sandwich joint. I was extremely disappointed. The roast beef and turkey are the same kind you get at Subway--that is, super-processed, salty, but otherwise tasteless. And the toasting made the roast beef even drier. The bread was fine, but all the fillings were mediocre. And I know I already said it was salty, but I have to say it again as I only ate 1/3 of the sandwich and was thirsty all night. I am a big time sandwich lover and this place is redefining my sandwich needs. I have yet to manage to finish my own sandwich though - when you are eating something that delicious around a friend you must share: plan accordingly. My first experience was after a night of mini golf. It was late and I was starving. I knew they were closing, but my friend talked the two cute cheerful guys behind the counter into making me just one more sandwich. I had the Italian, hold the onions. These guys are real sandwich artists (bugger off Subway!) which I realized watching them craft my sandwich. It took almost 10 minutes but it was worth every second. I was the saddest girl ever to give half to my friend. During my last trip there, I was the only one that hadn't had lunch yet. My friends waited patiently for the sandwich to be complete after my ranting about it being worth the wait. Forgive me Royal Grinders for I have sinned. It was entirely too serendipitous that my friend and I came here for lunch today, and it really should have been a given. I learned that it's remarkably difficult to find a good Seattle restaurant that's open for lunch on Monday. We tried Paseo first (closed Mondays!) and then the Fremont Mad Pizza (closed forever!) before the Yelp iPhone app directed us around the corner to you. Thank goodness for Yelp. And for Royal Grinders. It's hard to describe the awesomeness of this sandwich. The bread is both crunchy and chewy at the same time, grilled perfectly. It's like the sandwich that a Quiznos sandwich wishes it could be after all those commercials talking about how they're better than Subway - alas, neither one will ever come close. And the sandwiches are cheaper than Quiznos too?! Rock on. As we sat devouring our sandwiches, my friend and I were looking around at the plaza, discovering the randomness encased in the ground. This place is still top notch in my book. However, this time we decided not to call our order in before heading over to Royals due to the no wait on our last visit. Holy Fantastical Subs. There once was a time that I thought Honeyhole was the pinnacle of sandwiches. Oh how wrong I was. I'm not saying that Honeyhole has crap sandwiches now, and they still are very good in their own way (great fries). However, now Royal Grinders has officially taken the crown as the best place for sandwiches in Seattle. Move over Paseo, Honeyhole and Michou's, because the Grinders at Royal Grinders are mouth watering, tongue waggling, and orgasm inducing goodness. I'm going to recommend the Crown Grinder and Royal Grinder. Luckily, I went with the lady, so we were able to split the two. However, my next time back I am itching to try the Italian Grinder. While we were basking in the glow of our just finished Grinders and watching the beggining ceremonies for the Super Bowl, the girl at the counter gave us both small samples of the gelato. It tasted AMAZING! It wasn't the fact that she gave us samples (i think they're supposed to if you ask for one), it was that she did it without us even asking. I went to this place originally when it was still Postmark Gelato. Back then there was pretty much just gelato. When I was in the neighborhood again recently I saw that the place changed their name and now had more of an emphasis on grinders! So, it was lunch time and I decided to stop in. First of all, the sandwich was awesome! It was carefully prepared and the bread they used was outstanding. While I was waiting, I think one of the owners (same guys who ran it when it was Postmark) gave people who were waiting samples of the gelato. Good stuff! If it was warmer I would have been on it! The wait for food could be long, I showed up and there were two people ahead of me. I believe the wait was about 10 minutes for the sandwich. This doesn't bother me at all, just wanted to point out that you'd probably not want to stop by if you're expecting a super quick in and out. I went in to order a Lenin panini, after all what can be more perfect, especially after viewing the Lenin statue?! While I was waiting for order to be made, I was reading an article from a local newspaper that raved the sandwich place. I was surprised to see what I picked was in the "do not order" list! After seeing that, I had a 2nd thought about my order; I had half of a mind to change the order when they were pressing my panini. I accepted like a proud butch. I went to sit at the canal, about 15 minuet walk. I ate my sandwich and prepared myself for the worst. The guy who wrote the article lied, or he (she?) is just an idiot. It was good. FOOD: Awesome sandwiches! I got the Chicken Pesto and Crown Grinder. The Chicken Pesto consisted of mesquite chicken, pesto, provolone, swiss, tomato, red onion, black olives, pepperoncini. The sandwich was hot and the bread was perfect. The Crown Grinder is like the Chicken pesto but with turkey and ham and no pesto. Also great if you like ham. I prefer chicken! *Bonus:: You can add cucumbers, pickles, carrots, jalapeños and lettuce for no extra charge!! Awesome =) I love jalapeños!! I also had a kid's gelato. Very small. Very pricy. But not bad. I only tried a few flavors and only like a couple. SERVICE: Super nice and helpful cashier that helped us since it was our first time. PRESENTATION: Tiny, hole in the wall sandwich shop. It may not be a 5 star restaurant per se, but the sandwiches and gelato are worth five stars, and so is the friendly service. The smiling guys behind the counter made my day. The Italian grinder was amazing - crusty bread, oozing sauce and flavorful meat/fillings - all without a mess down the front of my shirt (that means you Paseo Midnight Cuban!). This is hands down the greatest sandwich shop I have ever been to. We ended up here because the place we wanted to go to was closed, I was visiting Seattle and wanted to try as many things on the 100 things to eat in Seattle list from the talk pages as possible. So we went around the corner to this place (which I later found out /was/ on the list; and for what I ate! Score!). This sandwich had the best bread ever, somehow the outside was deliciously toasty while the inside was was all warm and fluffy (I suspect butter was involved, but oh well). I got the Italian Grinder, which has all my favorite meats in it, so this was pretty much a win. Also I love the whole 'free soda' concept. Sandwiches are my favorite food on the planet. Yes, it's true. I could eat some form of sandwich every meal of the day and be quite happy. I am not incredibly *picky* about my sandwiches (no gourmet PB&J here), I do know a great sandwich when I taste it, and the frequency with which I run into a truly fantastic sandwich is rare indeed. So it is without reservation, and with great enthusiasm, that I report that Royal Grinder has my favorite sandwich in the world (to date). I mean, I crave these. I fantastize about them when I am eating other sandwiches. If that makes me a bad person, so be it. Royal Grinder has my heart. The key to a truly epic sandwich starts with the bread, and they have that down pat. But then there is the delicate balance of flavors when concocting a sandwich which even the most skilled can fall short of achieving. When I first saw their club sandwich, I thought to myself 'Cucumbers and olives?! On a turkey club??' But I gave it a try without alteration, and I was hooked. The ingredients are built upon each other in thin-but-hearty layers, which allow their flavors to blend seamlessly in every bit. No giant bite of turkey here, then a chunk of bacon in the next. Every bite is as evenly matched in texture and flavor as the one before it, making you plow through it faster than you would like. I even had this place talked up to me by friends, who swore it was the best sandwich in town. Going in with high expectations is bound to foreshadow disappointment. But instead, I was thanking them and making them promise to pick me up a sandwich whenever they are in the neighborhood and drop it by my office.
