root hill has set the bar realllllly high. and the coolest part is they are completely relaxed and down-to-earth, even though they full well know they've put together the most ingeniously-crafted caffeine den in the slope/gowanus area. the minds behind this place are clearly obsessed with quality. the beautiful space, furniture, clover apparatus, attention to flavor nuances of properly roasted beans...I mean, they have two different yirgacheffes, one chocolatey and one berry-esque, if my memory serves. and they have awesome espresso china. I visited this spot on several occasions. I try to reserve my review of an establishment until I've been a couple of times. Living in the city for most of my year's...the one thing Ive figured out is that you can never fairly review unless you've been more than once. True to form i didn't have the best experience the first time I came in but considering I live in the hood I came back and hung out. I can definitely say that these guys make an effort to treat people right. This place is void of the usual a-hole attitude that exists at most of the coffee places I've been to. The baked goods rock and most all the sandwich's are worth trying. I'm addicted to the Hummus avocado and the grill cheese. read more

I love this place. Cappuccinos are legit and properly made, but priced reasonably. Service is excellent: friendly and I never have the wait long for my drink. A very good work cafe. The seating is various (though not all that numerous), from padded and low, to two-person tables, to wall shelves. There's a Clover machine, which is nice, and a menu (didn't eat). I'd kill for cafes like this in upper Manhattan. As for Brooklyn, it sits right behind the best work cafes, if only because it is a bit small and there are only a few conventional tables. read more

The vibe and music here is great, the staff make you feel like family, I bring my laptop and work here as often as I can, and I love the bench outside on a nice day!!! Waited more than 20 minutes for toast to go. Called ahead of time to see if they could poach eggs and was confirmed they could. When I got there the cashier seemed appalled by the idea of an off-menu order but begrudgingly put it through when I told him I had just called about it. It was a rainy day and I wanted to find a place with good coffee an outlets. This was the perfect place. Even better though was the turkey and bacon sandwich. Why does this place have four stars? Aside from the fact that it is adorable -- really, such a cute spot, hate to write any of this down -- and my barista was so sweet -- the coffee is just awful. Whoever said it is strong has questionable judgement. I'm tempted actually now to assume that the coffee was just stale. It tasted worse than Starbucks. I came here to work and perhaps grab a bite to eat. They had decent coffee and nice atmosphere. I had my laptop and sat next to the sign that said not to use your laptop for more than half an hour, for about two hours, but no one said anything. The wifi was good until it randomly cut out and wouldn't connect again. There didn't seem to be any vegan options for food so I decided that was my sign to leave. read more

Granted it's overpriced and you can find cheaper bagels and coffee all around this area, but it's got good ambiance, fairly friendly counter staff, free WiFi and plentiful outlets for your luggable laptops, kinda funky inside, and a good location. OK, so. I've been writing a paper on coffee for school this past week and I realized that a reevaluation of my favorite cafes was in order. I come to Root Hill about three or four times a week and I have to say that this place is the rock on which I stand. I'm still not sold on the food, it tends to be of questionable quality and takes a bit too long. I've noticed that they've bumped up their service a bit in the last month or two, but stick with the baked goods if you ask me. BUT THE COFFEE! Holy SH$*!!! Their house coffee is awesome but I've learned their secret, the espresso. I have a favorite barista, a tall, super skinny guy, who I recently found is named Angelo. I'm thinking he may be better than Jerry at Cafe Peddlar. I know that's saying a lot. Ask for him by name. Their are some other decent baristas at Root Hill but this guy is definitely on his game. Root Hill closed for awhile for renovations and now has reopened. Although some of the changes are for the better my most recent visit was just kind of okay. With 54 businesses in Park Slope having closed this year just okay might be something to work on. read more

Love this cute cafe! Perfect for a quick coffee or lunch after I get my butt kicked at hiit box*! I've spent many a minute salivating over their baked goods and lunch options, I haven't tried everything yet, but I never back down from a challenge. So far i've assessed: Coffee both hot and cold is great. Not bitter and you get an actual full cup. (non of this starbucks 12oz is actually 10oz crap) Frittatas are made daily and delicious. For the veggie Kale and potato option definitely the way to go. Home made veggie burger- Awesome! It's so hard to find 1)A veggie burger that is actually hand crafted and 2)nut free. This sweet potato and quinoa based burger satisfied both my meat and nut free needs. Now that the sun is actually out and you can stand to be outside for more than 10 seconds, the few seats offered outside is an amazing respite from working indoors all day. Stopped in here to get out of the rain and found myself at a nice little table with a large mug of tea and the largest, chocolatiest brownie I have eaten in years. In fact, I couldn't finish it. But it was good! And the tea was great--not your usual crummy bagged tea (though it was in a bag). The service could have been better, but they also left me alone for several hours. They use counter culture beans and the Ferrarri of espresso machines, a La Marzocco. Here are my qualms: the seating feels very far from the espresso bar, and I've had several burnt espresso drinks here. Obsessive coffee freaks like myself enjoy the craft of pulling a shot and like to watch baristas in action and you are kind of cut off from that action when at this joint. I also find the ambiance a little overly contrived, though I appreciate the effort and care that went into the decor. The food is really incomparably good for a coffee house and I'm surprised by how few people seem to order it. They obviously care about their produce. Cute? Clean lines? Charming? The reviews here for this place make it out to be a contender for an Architectural Digest cover. Not so. Root Hill is jumbled and too small and cramped. They sell all kinds of crappy looking packaged goods and bottled drinks in a cooler. Maybe the place would win an award for best designed deli, but that's about it. They also shamefully waste their outdoor space with benches that look as comfortable as railroad ties and that cement block thing in the front is less cozy than the curb. And they have two flat screen TVs! I don't care what they are playing, that's just the coup de grace of the poor design taste going on here. I will give them props for improving this stretch of 4th Ave., but the coffee, and atmosphere, is better at many of the other neighborhood spots. read more

As one of those who is privileged to work from home, finding that coffee shop to plug in the laptop and get work done is key! This place is decent- outlets, comfortable seating, free wifi and decent coffee. I only give it three stars because the website says "not a library" which I interpret as they are not fans of people getting work done here. Pay them a visit though and make your own interpretation of this because otherwise it's a good place to break out the laptop. read more
