First time here and I caught them on an off day. Southside Coffee has been on multiple lists for best coffee as well as best breakfast sandwich. I read the menu online and was going to order the "New School" breakfast sandwich. Southside Coffee is an order only spot. There's no inside dining. If it's raining? Bring an umbrella while you wait. I walk up to the window and I order a large latte and I feel the words coming out of my mouth as a say: Old School Breakfast Sandwich... My order came out pretty quickly. This bacon & egg sandwich is made on Italian bread with kale. Why. Why! The sandwich comes to me, too many eggs, hardly any bacon and the Italian bread was stale. Great coffee! Skip this place. Poor management, mediocre coffee, and frustrating operations. One employee stuck running the register and making drinks creates massive bottlenecks. Service is slow despite constant lines. The dark, oily coffee isn't of quality, customers cut in line constantly, and with no indoor seating, crowds block the entire sidewalk and are quite rude about it. It's overpriced compared to better cafes nearby. The only plus is a convenient location for just okay pastries. Don't waste your time or money--plenty of better coffee shops in the area at lower prices. This place should not be made to feel welcome as a part of the local community. read more

I really wanted to like this coffee shop, but the experience makes it hard to support a local business. Some of the staff are genuinely excellent, but the ones who aren't completely ruin the place. The rude employees are shockingly unpleasant--attitude for no reason, short responses, and zero sense of customer service. It's honestly unbelievable that they think this is acceptable. My iced coffee was barely filled, and when I asked for more--because for $6 I expect a full cup, not a half-hearted pour--I was met with attitude instead of a simple fix. No customer should feel like they're inconveniencing someone just by asking for what they paid for. They get away with this behavior because they're the only shop on 6th Ave for a stretch, and it shows. This kind of mediocrity and rudeness is exactly why people hesitate to support local businesses. If they didn't have a monopoly on the area, I doubt they'd survive a week running things this way. Overall, extremely disappointing. If you want decent service or even a full cup of coffee, look elsewhere. The pastries are inconsistent. The only good thing worth coming here for is the peppermint brownie, which is different depending on the day that you buy it I think what makes it taste so good is it taste like it's out of the box read more

Coffee is decent but limited options on plant-based offerings in the pastry department. They used to be open for seating inside before the pandemic but they closed to only sidewalk service since and haven't opened up again even though every other coffee shop in the neighborhood has and they're only 2-3 blocks away if you know where to look. They also have more food options. However, if you're passing by and just need a quick espresso while out on a walk this place works in a jiffy! read more

First visit to Southside Coffee was a delicious treat. No, I did not actually order any coffee, just a couple sandwiches to share with my girlfriend. We parked down the block and made our way into the restaurant. First, the tuna melt. OMG. Served on a couple slices of toasted rye bread, this tuna melt is the best of its kind that I've had in recent memory. The tuna salad is so good. I'm picky af when it comes to tuna melts, and this one absolutely did the trick. Next, the new school breakfast sandwich: scrambled eggs, bacon, kale, hot sauce, on a sesame seed roll. Tasted absolutely delicious. Pretty big portion, too. So excited to add this to my regular rotation. I highly recommend making a visit, either for a bite to eat or some coffee to sip. Mmm. On a normal weekend you won't find me up before 11 a.m. But occasionally, the plus side of having a screwed up sleeping schedule is getting to hit up Southside for their soy lattes, chai lattes, and heavenly cinnamon buns. It's nice and relatively quiet at around 8:30 a.m. More importantly, the cinnamon buns are still there (I've learned from experience that they usually run out by late morning to early afternoon). They're delicious and one of my favorite cinnamon buns around. Each towering piece is fluffy and airy, sticky from the cinnamon sugar glaze at the bottom, and topped with a creamy, decadent cream cheese frosting. The chocolate chip banana bread is also great. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of their baked goods. Although I've frequented this coffee shop for a while, only recently did I get a chance to try their breakfast sandwiches. The New School comes with bacon, scrambled eggs, and Sriracha miso-tahini kale on a seeded hero roll. This sandwich is massive, and the roll has a good outer crunch while still being more pliant and airy. No scratched roof of the mouth here. Look out for their rotating paper bag specials, which are true to the name and tacked on the wall. I got the biscuit special with scrambled eggs, bacon, white cheddar, and pickled jalapeños, and it was marvelously greasy and tasty as expected. I still need to try their namesake breakfast sandwich... and every other one on the menu. The service is fine. I'm a grab-and-go kind of customer, so I've never stuck around long enough for it to matter to me. read more

Fresh morning baked goods is what I come here for! They do seasonal pastries which are some of the best I've had around the Park Slope area. I was never a fan of scones until now! Their scones are not dry at all which is usually what I experience so I tend to avoid scones. I also love whenever they have cakes and cookies. The staff is super friendly and there's no minimum for a credit card charge. I don't usually get their coffee but my friends do and they love it. This is a popular local place because there is always a line (not ridiculously long) and their bake stuff sell out quick. read more

I just wanna say the treats that they have are absolutely delicious, but the coffee on the other hand is definitely over rated . However I won't ever buying from here again. I don't know if all the staff are like this, however I had a horrible encounter with a employee & she was being very discriminatory towards me. I didn't already feel comfortable being that I was the only colored & every time I went to buy something I would get weird looks. Long story short she didn't accept my 100 bill, but last time I came another employee did. Now today again I passed by & asked another employee to see if they were going to say the same thing. We've been coming here for years and I have to say, today is my last visit. My car wouldn't start and we called AAA. They were on their way, so I picked up a coffee to wait. Being 8+ months pregnant, I found myself needing the restroom shortly after. I went back to Southside to ask if I could borrow theirs and the barista flat out told me to use the public washroom down the street. When I explained that I had just purchased a coffee, am heavily pregnant, and reminded her that businesses are unable to deny their restroom to pregnant women, she shrugged and pointed in the direction of the public restroom. This was not her concern. As I made my way down the icy streets, I slipped and fell while trying to make it to the washroom in time. Once I got there, the door of the one and only stall in the public washroom wouldn't close. While this is no fault of Southside, I also have to ask myself what kind of neighborhood shop would deny a heavily pregnant woman the use of their washroom and force her use the one down the street in the middle of winter? I had to ask myself if this is the type of business I wanted to continue to support and the answer is sadly, no. After coming here for years, the treatment I received today is utterly disappointing. read more

Over the last two years Southside has become one of my favorite places to go in the area. During the pandemic pre-vaccination I was unemployed and would take long walks to/from Greenwood Cemetery and noticed Southside on my way there. I forget when I finally decided to check out what they had on offer but I am so glad I did. The coffee is good but the real story here are the baked goods and sandwiches. They have a selection of about 5-7 treats a day and once they are gone they are gone. Definitely try some of the cake slices as they do not have them every day. Such a cute little place with the best breakfast sandwiches!! I got a Old School Bacon Egg and Cheese and my husband got the Southside. Both were amazing! The shop is small (what place isn't in NYC) and crowded (because it's good!), so we ordered at the counter and then waited outside with our pup until our order was called. Not only were the employees really friendly and welcoming, but the clientele was too! Sitting outside, we had other customers with dogs come by to let the pups sniff and then tie their dog to the fence while they ran in to order. They were super polite and asked if we wound't mind keeping an eye and then stuck their head out to check on occasion. It just felt like a very friendly, neighborly place. The coffee is also Counter Culture coffee, which is sustainable single-origin coffee company and really really yummy. read more

Not a fan of writing sour reviews, but here we are. The coffee was fine, the wireless internet worked, and the barista was there behind the counter. Bam, there's your coffee shop trifecta. What didn't sit well with me though was how it wasn't very clean. A few tables were still hanging out with their last customer's leftovers. Behind the coffee bar was a hot mess with used and discarded coffee grounds seemingly everywhere but the trash. By all means there's grace if the shop is crazy busy, but it wasn't while I was there. Reading someone else's review reminded me of a weird period of time where I really didn't like this place and it took me months to come back . The staff had a strange and unfriendly attitude , frequently berated people for bringing any outside snacks , which made me feel uncomfortable. I was in Windsor Terrace (or whatever the kids are calling this area nowadays), and I was frightfully early for a meeting. By frightfully early, I mean I didn't take into account the hour and a half it usually takes my associate to get out of bed. If you are ever naive enough to believe people will be where they say, Southside is a delightful place to sit around and wait for them. In the middle of a Thursday afternoon, there were more than enough seats around, despite the steady traffic in and out. The guy behind the counter was engaged in an intense discussion with a couple, but immediately served me quickly and efficiently. A little girl and her mother were enjoying one of the cookies (which looked fantastic), a student was taking advantage of the free wi-fi on her laptop, and a couple ladies were lounging on the comfy couches by the back wall. Everyone but me had the familiarity of a regular, and I can understand why. If I lived in the area, you would grow sick of seeing me in Southside, sipping a cup of tea ($2 even), reading a book or exploring the interwebs. read more

A local told me that the best - THE BEST - coffee is here, so I waited and waited for the perfect moment to verify this. When the moment arrived, I discovered that Southside Coffee has damn good coffee, to be sure, but has only a few options, both in terms of actual beans and types of drinks. The well-windowed shop is in a very old school building that very pleasant to walk to on a sunny fall afternoon. The entire neighborhood seems to have a filter of nostalgia placed over it, and this is the perfect, slightly lonesome light in which to view the uncrowded space, where only a couple people sit with laptops. Still, the place has a very offline quality to it, what with its retro siding and "A Star is Born" vinyl album art taped up to the unisex bathroom door. Staring up at the stark and quite expensive options, I caved in and bought a $16 pound of La Atilio whole beans of the Catuai, Bourbon variety with hints of nectarine, red plum, honey, and hazlenut from the Macala region of Honduras, washed and patio dried then transported via direct farm relationship for local roasting in Brooklyn by Toby's Estate. After this tremendous moment of weakness, I ordered an Americano, which was the cheapest thing other than an espresso shot. I also made my selection based on the desire to actually taste the flavor with only the dilution of fresh spring water. I didn't want to be hammered on the head and heart by a full-on espresso at 4 in the afternoon (or did I...) I watched the calm and contented man get to work at the machine. Now I'm no barista, but I was immediately alarmed and amused at the MOUNTAIN of airy grind that he mounded upon the machine and somehow packed into the press. The result was a complete cup full of a liquid that had the consistency, flavor, and certainly strength of an unadulterated espresso. It was like a deca-espresso. Really crazy stuff. I was a bit late to meet a friend at the cemetery grounds so I hobbled on out of there, trying to maintain my balance. Almost immediately, I spilled an eighth of the stuff down my forearm, cussing in a foul manner in front of an alarmed couple and their toddlers dining outside a neighboring restaurant as the delayed burn set in. I regretted what was probably a dollar's worth of lost liquid, but in the end, the reduction turned out to be a blessing, because, halfway through what was left, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. But that's the point, baby...and on that count, I was very impressed by the quality of Southside's bean juice. The phrases "best coffee" or "best coffee place" are truly loaded, and definable only by factors such as whether the person is a coffee snob, coffee lover, coffee scholar, coffee expert, coffee dabbler, or a functional coffee drinker. Such descriptions can only be described by each person's personal matrix of priorities regarding convenience, location, ambiance, service, market ethics, quality, value, variety, taste, and so on. Being most often a black coffee drinker, I never knew until I visited Southside that variety was so high up on my list of priorities. Only this would explain why the place could score relatively high in location, ambiance, service, market ethics, and quality, but average down to a three after considering variety (high end but narrow), value (pricey, even when dealt a surprise 10x shot of espresso), and taste (too strong as I was seeking an Americano). Sigh. Had I had a closed container, I would have had no complaints and would have seriously brought it home to enjoy with boiled water for the remainder of the week. Alas. Southside Coffee is a gentle paradox; nestled in an emerging neighborhood with an inviting and minimalist space, drawing in locals to imbibe its black gold every day for however long. But the prices don't permit this unless you live in the income bracket enjoyed by most residents of the adjacent "Prime" Park Slope, and also miraculously don't have anywhere else you need to be.... Southside not only has amazing (& consistent) coffee, but they've single-handedly gotten me to eat meat anytime I go there. My husband gets the 295 (Avocado, eggs, swiss, pickled peppers, multigrain toast) & loves it every time! The first time I went there I ordered the Southside (Ham, eggs, cheddar, "breakfast mayo," pickled red onion) without the ham. There was a mistake & I received it with the ham, which I'm not going to waste, & ate it & let me tell you - this sandwich is made the way it is for a reason! All of these flavors blend so week together & they're highlighted by the most amazing pickled red onions. If you're a meat-eater, please give this sandwich a try! You won't be disappointed. Plus, everyone there is super friendly & nice so that always wins me over. They have a limited schedule right now because of COVID, but that's an easy fix by just calling ahead. read more

You'll find me here every morning at 7am if they're walking distance from me, unfortunately they are not. Looking at a cup of latte with a heart beautifully formed really makes my day. It has the right amount of espresso and steamed milk. Not bitter even to the last sip. I usually add one pack of sugar, gently stir, and slowly sip. Small coffee shop, not much decor but gives off a calm vibe, indoor/outdoor seating, free WIFI, reasonable prices with tax included (average $3 for drinks and $1.50 for pastries), tipping is optional, and a friendly staff. It's literally across the street from two massive schools, most of the staff of which buy coffee daily. But it doesn't open until a few minutes before school starts, so everyone flocks elsewhere.
