I'm typing this as I sit in the café right now! This spot is so relaxing and laid back, tucked in the Park Slope neighborhood. My partner and I are in Brooklyn for the book festival, and I'm glad we decided to add this stop to our visit. You'll see people reading and writing here--it's tiny, cozy, and filled with soft, relaxing music. The seating is made from old church pews with bolted tables, and it feels like the place has been around a while. It's tiny and there's only one barista but he was polite and made a good latte! I got a teddy bear-shaped mini sponge cake/cookie (so good!) while my partner had a cinnamon raisin swirl croissant. We both went with iced mochas--perfectly balanced, not too sweet but not unsweetened either. With the door propped open, a soft warm breeze drifts through, wrapping the café in this lovely, easy atmosphere. Definitely a spot I'd come back to! read more

Wow, just WOW! I will start my review by saying, Cafe Martin is a must stop for a chill vibe and great coffee! My son has relocated to Brooklyn, and this is going to be my go-to for coffee and relaxation during each visit. When I saw their sign saying no Wi-Fi, I was bummed. But, then I read further and the sign said bring a book, write a book, and bring a friend.... I knew I had to step inside. I'm glad I did. It's small, with seating down the side walls near the front and the barista is placed at the rear. It smelled good with fresh coffee aromas, but most of a wall there was a solid low buzz of patrons enjoying conversation. It was love at first smell and sound!! ROTFL Oh yeah, we ordered an iced mocha and a hot mocha, and enjoyed them both immensely. There were pastries, but we were saving room for some of the food stops along the street in this part of Park Slope. I expect to stop in here every day of my stay on this trip, and I will return on each trip to visit my son. It is very true when they say a great cup of coffee is not so much the coffee but about the company of wonderful people. Well this week it was both! A dear friend brought me to one of her favorite spots when I was in town and was only going to take me when the owner was back because she said the atmosphere is what keeps her going back...and she wasn't lying...the hospitality was on point! The people spoke to each other with genuine investment in the lives of each other and it felt good to know that the company that is kept says a lot about a place. My latte was spot on and we were able to enjoy the company of others without feeling rushed to leave. I would recommend marking this places as a must go and check out on a list somewhere! read more

Coffee spot for locals, love to sit inside on the weekends and enjoy a decent cup of coffee with other morning people. Coffee is sometimes on the burnt side in my opinion, but don't let that stop you. If you don't like your cup, you can let the staff know and they'll remake it how you want it. Visited Cafe Martin for coffee on Sunday morning. I have been a few times over the past two weeks and the coffee and the service have been very inconsistent. On this occasion, the coffee had a bit of a burnt taste and I needed to repeat several requests while the barista put my coffee together to get things correct. Quality: Inconsistent would be how I summarize my experiences at Cafe Martin. And unfortunately the highs do not outweigh the lows. The coffee can be quite good, it tends to be served on the stronger side, but on my most recent trip it had an overwhelming burnt taste. They have a few pastries on display, but they never look very appetizing, this may be in part because of the poor lighting near the display. And with no seating inside, it is hard to even imagine if the cozy feel would make a visit better. Quantity: I do appreciate that almost every cup of iced coffee I received was about to overflow. Value: $4.25 for a Large Iced Drip Coffee. Ambiance: Cafe Martin is a small coffeeshop in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It is a very small space that only has two chairs out front where you can sit down with your coffee. One at a time you walk through to the back of the store and order. Four or five tiny tables are inside the dim space, and while it is cool the benches are church pews, I can't imagine they are super comfy. But it has an old school vibe, the music is always jazz or classical, and I'm sure some folks would be very productive working in the space. Crowd: The fact that they still only allow one customer in at a time is a huge winter deterrent, because people don't want to wait out in the cold when other options exist. However, there was almost always a person ordering inside when I stopped by. Service: Unpredictable. They have a rotating group of baristas, and because of the intimate experience of visiting during COVID, so much falls on who is there. And unfortunately it has been more bad than good. Apathy and requiring repeated requests is not the best experience. Parking: Street parking next to the park across the street. read more

If there is one word I can use to describe Cafe Martin, it's "atmosphere". As soon as you enter the dark wood interior of this shop you feel transported into another world. There was some classic music playing the day I went (for video gamers, it was reminiscent of some of what you'd hear in Bioshock). Between that and the signage on the walls this place definitely made you feel comfortable. I ordered a coffee to go and I have to say the barista on duty that day seemed very irritated by everything around him. Maybe he was having an off day, but for example when someone asked him what music was playing, he shrugged and gave the guy a death stare like he had just asked something incredibly offensive. When I asked for my coffee he seemed to sigh as if I had asked for something very bothersome. Were it not for this display of behavior, I'd be giving this place four stars. The coffee was delicious and I really enjoyed it. I would totally go back for the coffee but given how many other places there are in the area for the same thing I may wind up going somewhere friendlier instead. read more

I was jonesing for a crossant on my way to Bagel World around the corner when I noticed how cozy this place was. So I figured this place would totally offer up an awesome buttery crossant right? This boutique coffeehouse sits on the middle of 5th avenue, right across the street from the school. It's not your typical, extravagant looking cafe like the rest in the hood; the competition is definitely high. But it's a comfortable cafe; more on the small scale so if you are looking for space, this is not your place. They seem to have a decent selection of coffee and espresso. They receive their bakery goods from Colson Patisserie so thats a plus if you don't want to take that long walk (especially in cold weather). Service can be a bit better. Staff seemed annoyed but maybe it was a bad day for him. Cash only... really? It's quite surprising some places are still cash only during this age of advanced technology. 6 months ago I was in the neighborhood and I stopped in to buy a coffee. The intuitive owner, (an amazing woman who makes multitasking look like child's play) realized I did not have $ with me, offered to allow me to come back another time and pay for my coffee. I have been going to cafe Martin for the last few weeks because my son goes to summer camp across the street. I usually go to Cafe Regular. I'm so glad that I've had the opportunity to try something different. Cafe Martin has better coffee. I get Iced almond milk lattes. Today I spilled a cup of coffee because when I put it down on the table, it slipped. The table is a little slanted... be sure to be careful with your coffee at the side table close to the window . Well, the barista (I think she's the owner), couldn't be more gracious. I was so embarrassed! She and her male friend at the counter came over quickly to help me clean it up with a rag. I was so amazed with their earnestness and readiness. They really helped make an awkward moment so comfortable . They really care about their community. Their love was like coming out of their pores. Like an ice cream parlor when a kid drops a cone or other coffee shops--the owner/barista was on top of it. She quickly made me a new coffee at no charge with a smile . I feel like she's a part of my family (even she's not Filipino--she has the cheerful disposition) I love seeing her in the morning--she's so cheerful and peppy! When she gave me the coffee to replace the spilled coffee she said something about karma and abundance; giving is receiving. I guess that's why she was talking about making donations to local schools and community groups in the fall. She wants to just give give give give! What an earth mama / goddess ! She is always talking so sweetly to her male friend. I overheard her talking about how special I am ... I just had a miscarriage and I feel like Martin is like a warm womb. She really cares about maintaining clientele and being eager to create a loving safe space for all different people. I am so glad that I go to this place. I will be sure to recommend it to all my park slope parents and friends especially since it's right near jj Byrne park. I'm glad that her male friend hangs out there all the time because he really helps her out when things get so busy. That place is a lot to juggle with just one person behind the counter. I made friends with a really sweet Asian woman next to me. I was anxious about my son leaving for a long journey today with the camp. I wanted to make sure that the buses safely departed so I watched from the window. And when the coffee spilled she jumped in and helped out. All the other people around just kind of stared at 2 asian women cleaning the floor ... And who cares that the place isn't air conditioned ? I don't. It's like a romantic European cafe with the perfume of body scents. And wifi? We don't need it. I love to sit for hours there. She said something that she loves it when people just camp out there because passerby people see that it's busy . She even encourages breastfeeding moms to nurse there if they feel uncomfortable in other spaces -- they could just go there without even buying anything! How great is that! (And a great marketing ploy to bring in the mamas. Smart move, Martin!) And even though there is no sign about the $10 minimum charge for credit cards--and despite that had deterred me from going a few times (I ended up going to Root Hill on 4th avenue since they take credit cards--they're actually quite good and they're air conditioned and have wifi and have good pastries and avo toast) I just have to remember to carry cash on me when I go to Cafe Martin. The cash requirement is so quirky especially since places like bluestone coffee is completely cash less. Good old Cafe Martin always has us on our toes ;) read more

Loved this place, great decor and atmosphere. I'm glad I happened to be in the area early - its only open from 8-5, so I wouldn't have been able to visit otherwise. Here's what happened to me last Saturday afternoon (6/23/2012) in Café Martin. I ordered an espresso to go with a cup of water (it was a very hot day). A french speaking guy (not Martin!- Martin is nice!) who was chatting with his friend gave me a glass of water, even not cold. I asked him if I could use the plastic cup b/c it's to go. I took the cup by myself from the counter and poured the water into the cup and said thank you. The French garçon said "it's kind of waste" then he said in French "it sucks". His friend responded in french "yes, it sucks". Hey, there are so many people who can speak French in Park Slope! Sorry- I don't look like but I am. He also took all the plastic cups away from the counter - hey, I'm not gonna steal them! So, if you see the French garçon behind the counter, don't ask him water. You'll be insulted in French! Of course, he wouldn't say "thank you" or "merci" at all. why 2 stars? B/c I like Martin. read more

We vacationed in Park Slope this summer from Baltimore for a couple weeks, and as usual, I Yelp'd up all the local coffee spots and visited. Cafe Martin was clearly the best that I found. (About me: basic coffee geek, roast my own at home, have a Rancilio Silva + Rocky home setup.) Martin is a character, looks like a scaled-down British version of Rocky, can be monosyllabic ("brusque?") but engage him and you will find he's got a warm heart. And pulls a great shot. After a few visits, he will remember your favorite order. Don't expect fancy latte art & frills at this tiny establishment, but if you're looking for high-quality coffee, this is worth a long walk down 5th Ave. Tell'em "Keith from Baltimore" sent you! read more

Pretty decent local coffee house. If I ever need a coffee, this is where I get my fix. The beans are roasted a little darker than I prefer, but when I need a pick-me-up, this works out perfectly. I've casually witnessed lots of amusing scenes in this little shop that serves up a decent cup of joe. Its a small space to people watch and just unplug for a moment. I'm guessing it's Martin who gruffly jostled a man out of the door who sauntered in with his dog one brisk day. Of course you can't bring your dog in here. Deserves more than a cursory review done on an iPhone but is nonetheless an exceedingly lovely café that's got the right idea: simple, classic coffee drinks and an unpretentious quiet atmosphere rivaled by few cafés I've frequented in Brooklyn or elsewhere. +1 for buttery croissants and pain au chocolat. Fantastic coffee in the slope. Excellent beans, small but perfect atmosphere, and he sure can put together one fine latte. We often come in for a bag of beans and enjoy the spoils (aka a free latte with every bag purchase) while we are here. The name, Cafe Martin evokes a Mediteranean-ness, from the riviera of Italy, France or Spain. But no, Martin is Irish, thick accent, few words, he loves his smokes, and will go out every once in a while and wholehartedly enjoy one, even though there is a small crowd lining up. The only difference between a quiet smoke and a crowd-awaits smoke is in the energy of each puff. The place is quaint, warm and inviting, you'd expect to see writers or painters discussing their work in the middle of the afternoon, just because they can. The espresso and cappuccino are excellent, in an unfussy way. No gimmicks. No timers, no over groomed baristas that think they are god and thus must come down to earth with attitude and demand gratefulness to customers for the opportunity of drinking their amazing cup of Intelligentsia tripple ristretto. Martin has his own interpretation of latte art. A line in the middle dividing the right to the left of the cappucino microfoam. I like it, its a signature. The croissants are also notable. Indeed excellent. They remind me of france, actually in france. With very few food options, which run out early on, cappucino/espresso is what you should go for.
