Root Hill Cafe was near our hotel -- lucky us! It's in a cozy neighborhood setting, offering good options with delicious lattes and coffee, and a good assortment of gluten-free and vegan baked goods. The food was very tasty, service is excellent and everyone who works there is very welcoming. We stopped in to grab a small snack, and picked out the Grassroots Bar and a chocolate chip banana bread slice to share. Our consensus was that the Grassroots Bar was incredible and the banana bread was OK, a bit on the dry side. I so wanted to rate this cute little cafe higher. But, my word, I had the saltiest omelette I've ever had I wish that was hyperbole. It was inedible. I noticed it had finishing salt on top which gave me pause and then that first bite was insane. I got through about half and I just couldn't take it anymore. Also, the description says "sautéed vegetables and cheese" and it was just spinach. So that was a little bit of a let doenThe staff member who made the omelette and who was working the register was very cordial. Please know this rating is just based on my meal. In September, my wife and I hosted a Saturday night wedding nearby in Brooklyn and used the Root Hill Café as the venue for the Sunday morning brunch for the out-of-towners. Approximately 80 people attended this brunch over the course of three hours. The food consisted of hot items such as breakfast burritos and frittatas, as well as bagels, lox, various baked goods, fruit, yogurt, coffee and juice. The food was delicious and all throughout the process of planning this, we found Alejandra and Kendra to be extremely flexible, helpful and willing to go the extra mile to make our event a success. Was this one of the best egg breakfast sandwiches we've ever eaten? I think so, as they served up two fluffy made to order scrambled eggs and cheese with, thick and nicely cooked bacon on a soft, fresh brioche roll. A five star sandwich! We also had a latte and cappuccino, both were very good. The overall four star rating is due to the egg and spinach frittata, which arrived much too cool, and was very dense. Had coffee and breakfast at Root Hill Cafe on Sunday morning. They have some excellent coffee and decent food though the menu is a bit pricier than other places in the area. Quality: Root Hill Cafe has probably my favorite Iced Coffee in the Park Slope area. My girlfriend also raves about the Matcha Latte, which is pricey but apparently worth it. I am a little less enthusiastic about their food, but it is not bad. During a recent visit I ordered both the Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich and the Veggie Burger. The Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich was the better of the two with a delicious biscuit, but I was not crazy about the sausage patty and felt it needed a sauce. The Veggie Burger was okay, but the patty was too heavy with beans for me and I did not understand the bland yogurt-style sauce. I think you are probably better sticking with a drink and maybe a pastry. Quantity: A large iced drink is 24oz, which is pretty large. The food items are perfect for a small breakfast snack. Value: $4.50 for a Large Iced Coffee. $7.50 for a Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich. $7.50 for a Veggie Burger. Ambiance: Root Hill Cafe is located on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus. The shop sits on the corner and they currently are operating out of a window. Normally they have a small inside space with a few tables, which I have only seen through the window. For now, they only have outdoor seating with a bench out front and several tables along the side of the cafe. Sometimes they have umbrellas out, but it seems like it depends on the day, rather than the weather. What was missing is some soft music outside, but I assume they are hoping to reopen inside soon making it less important. Crowd: Always a line in the mornings, and it only grows on the weekends. It is no secret they has some of the best coffee around. Service: Extremely friendly staff, and considering the line, they were very efficient. Currently they are working out of a make-shift window, so the ability to dart back and forth to the kitchen makes it even more impressive. Parking: Street parking can be found nearby. read more

I understand that coffeeshops need to stay in business and have been hit hard by the pandemic, but we're all struggling right now, and charging full price ($2.50) for a refill of drip coffee is not so friendly. Also, on a recent visit, after I ordered I asked if I might use their restroom? The barista unconvincingly told me that their bathroom wasn't working, but that I could try the Starbucks across the street :( Sorry friends, but I did not feel cared for as a customer here, more like a nuisance. So this place is down the street from the car wash which can take, at times, a hot minute to get completed. I jogged over to pick up a quick breakfast, or so I thought. I ordered a toasted everything bagel and a water, paid, and then waited. I guess because it's a coffee shop the focus is on coffee but I waited somewhere around 7 minutes for just an everything bagel with cream cheese. In the meantime I watched the four people behind me receive their coffees (both iced and brewed) and head out. While it wasn't a horrible wait, I would have rather been in and out much faster given that I told them it was a to go order. So why still 4 stars? I love the decor of this cafe! There are different options of seatings from stools to comfy seats on the wall. I love that the simplicity of the decor and it is very easy on the eyes that gives it a homely cafe feeling. I had the cappuccino and the lemon ginger cookie. I must say the combination was so enjoyable. My cappuccino came with a cute heart latte art. The taste was delightful just like how a cappuccino should be. The lemon ginger cookie was amazingly delicious! The cookie had the right amount of sour-sweetness with hints of ginger spice. Glazed lemon cream on top was a great addition to the cookie. When I lived in Park Slope a lifetime ago, much of this section on 4th avenue was dead or more industrial. However as gentrification has taken hold, more and more bars, restaurants, stores and coffee shops have opened up in the area. Not too far from the Union Street train station, Root Hill Cafe is a really nice looking place. Its wood, dark colors and very rustic look drew me in right away, and really it deserves a full star purely for how comfortable the place makes you feel. The other star is for service. My order was taken quickly despite a line of about five people and the cashier and barista were pleasant enough. I had ordered a dirty chai, and unfortunately that is where this review takes a negative turn. In short: it was terrible. Now, to be fair a good chai is not easy to make. You have to get the right ingredients to work together in just the right way, then if your espresso shot is too harsh, it kills the flavor. It is a precarious balance that they were not able to achieve. The chai spices were so watered down you could barely taste them. Then the shot was extra bitter. The result? Bitter water with a hint of spice. Not good at all. I won't say that I'll never go here again. I'm sure their regular coffee is fine, but I will be staying far away from the chai! read more

One of my fav views in all of Brooklyn!! I spent two weeks studying for my usmle CS today test their over the summer while staying in park slope. I have since returned when on rotations at SUNY taking the Q to Atlantic terminal then walking or the R train nearby. I can't say enough great things as the place really is like 'family' and a place to call 'home.' I have had many conversations with other like myself and even had a collegial group of people I knew that would come often. It's so very nice. The food items are really wonderful. The sausage egg sandwich for breakfast is to die for. Homemade! I have also had the granola yogurt. So great! The quiches are homemade so had those too. Tomato mozz sandwiches are usually my fav for lunch. They warm it with herb butter inside. But the chicken sandwich with coleslaw was described by another lunch guest I met as 'probably the juiciest, delic chicken lunch sandwich on earth.' I can't beat that! Haha. I also tried the vegan chili on a cold, winter Brooklyn day. Just enough spice to wake the sense and clear the sinuses! Interestingly, Brussels sprouts, yams and regular items too within. Not one flavor dominated in anyway and made the entire dish stand out. Really complex, and hearty!! The ice teas are really wonderful and espresso shots nice a dark and deep. The music is simply incredible. You will find yourself signing and will leave with 80s 70s flamingo and even on special occasion, show tunes in your head. Stay thirsty my friends and come often. Prices are not cheap but this is a very special local handmade experience. They close late afternoon/eve on weekdays and weekends, so plan accordingly. Enjoy! read more

Carolyn, the owner, has worked so hard at upkeeping the place with her master chef, Kendra. They always greet people with a smile, and the food is delicious - from their Chia Cacao Pudding (vegan), Chorizo Frittatas, and succulent Sweet Potato Veggie Burgers, there is something amazing for everyone. I tried a latte from their newest staff member, Mal. It was creamy, rich, balanced, and full of flavor. She was full of customer service and care. Notable others from this establishment are the graceful Mallory, the passionate Angelo, and the cheerful Zoe. This local establishment does so much to make Carrol Street a better area to live. Worlds better than any Starbucks. Also one of the few places that offer both iced coffee and cold brew. Not every café offers both choices. Root Hill is a great place to have a man date. Meeting, I meant meeting. I'm told the coffee is excellent, but that's hearsay, as I'm not a coffee drinker. What I can report is that the oatmeal cranberry cookies are AWESOME. Also, the BLT is a tasty treat as well. I came here with a friend to study and the staff was REALLY nice and friendly. I loved that this place seemed to be a great little local spot. There was always a steady stream of people coming in on a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately they closed at 6 p.m. like most places. I'm afraid I need to retract... This WAS my favorite coffee shop in Brooklyn (or at least the ones I've tried/discovered in my short 6 months), but today's stop confirmed that there is little left to compel a return visit from me. Based on other recent reviews, they've had to gut due to flooding. Totally understand, they've gotta move the ktichen upstairs, which has drastically cut the seating here. Much more of a to-go place now. Also, the walk-up window is now gone since the counter has moved to the middle of the space. Very sad for my dogwalking caffeine trips, but c'est la vie. But, really. I can handle that. I've had wonderful coffees, chai and salads here. I've sang their praises, held meetings here, met friends. What I cannot handle is going in at 6:55pm tonight and approaching the counter to be greeted with this from a sad, sullen/angry lady: "I am closed, but if you have exact change I can give you coffee." (no smile, no nothing) Me: "oh, no thanks. sorry to bother you." spins on heels, walks out. 1. What time do you close? 655? Because if you close at 7pm, be open until 7pm. And if you close at 655pm, weird. If you closed at 630, lock the doors. 2. I do not want coffee, but even if I did...you should likely just offer it to me as whatever you have there you are likely going to throw out in 2 minutes. I don't need free things, but don't put the ball in my court to have exact change for exactly the leftover crap you want to serve me. That's not a compromise. 3. Counting money on the counter is rude, and unsanitary...not to mention dangerous. 4. The doors aren't locked and you are closed? If you are closed, lock them. Or, put out a closed sign. Or, denote SOMEWHERE that you are not accepting money anymore. Too many cafes in Brooklyn for this kind of service. I empathize if there has been flooding, etc but the whole vibe is sterile now and the employee was downright depressing. If you can't be welcoming, I won't be coming back. read more

Me and a friend of mine got off at Union St. and was about to go to Gorilla cafe. We asked this local where it was and he suggested to go to Root Hill Cafe which is just 2 blocks away from the train station. He said it's a very chilled out place. We took his suggestion because it was windy as fuck today and we didn't want to walk 5 blocks if there is a decent coffee place that is only 2 blocks away. I got an Iced Caramel Latte which was served in a cute jar. Never had such a cup in my life. My friend also got a Hot caramel latte and she said it was delicious. We were sitting on the brick wall side which was comfy but there was no back support. Oh well. Just came for coffee anyways. Will be going back here again and the staff was very friendly. I guess they improved since I read all the negative comments about the staff. They asked us how was the coffee and we both though it was delicious! I ended up here because I've been in search of a good Americano in Carroll Gardens and Root Hill was recommended on Chowhound as the nearest best choice. Wow -- finally! The best cafe Americano I've had in Brooklyn by far. And my husband got the Clover coffee -- superb. Really thrilling to find a place where the owner's taken the time and care (and expense!) to make sure her coffee is the best it can be. Also friendly and happy feel. Lovely. Shall return even though it's over a mile from my house. As another reviewer mentioned, the Clover coffee is over $3 a cup. Although it feels a little surreal to pay that much for non-espresso brewed coffee, I'm willing to pay it simply for the near guarantee that it's not going to disappoint. I think of the HUNDREDS (thousands?) of putrid cups of coffee I've spent $1-$2 on over a lifetime. UPDATE 2/19/09: Just returned from Root Hill. Today I had the straight brewed coffee, a small for $1.50. It was great. So, though the Clover coffee is extra special, it's not necessary to get it every time or any time if you don't want to spend that much. Yay. read more
