This coffee shop makes decent coffee and yummy sandwiches and pastries, although they are pricey. It doesn't have any seating inside. I'm not sure if it's leftover from Covid or if they've always been like this, but the tables are covered in local products and baskets for sale, so you can't sit. They do have two tables outside on the sidewalk. To my understanding, this is more of a to-go place. The coffee is flavorful and it's a great option when you're in the area! read more

I ordered a Croissant and a cappuccino. After taking my first bite of the croissant, I noticed it was stale. I go back to the counter and tell the barista. She gets argumentative that they are all fresh. I tell her once again that it is stale and even poke my finger inside so she sees it isn't soft. Very cute very small cafe. The tea is hot and the hot chocolate is chocolate and sweet. It was cold AF waiting in line to get a table at Lucali's and this is the closest cafe there. My friends and I took turns getting hot drinks and standing in the freezing cold. Henry's local was and is a Godsend. The pastries are delicious. We tried the olive oil cake and almond croissant and cookies. Everyone loved it. I dunno how but a single person was handling the transactions and making the drinks to order. A very cool spot just north the corner of Henry and 1st Place. A dark interior is so soothing in one's squinting, non-firing neural, pre-coffee state. I only recently started going there as much on again off again level of coffee consumption has ramped way up again. (I blame the Brooklyn Roasting Company's proximity to my art studio.) I like to be able to choose different drip coffees, but at Henry's Local they only offer one. I've been to bleary to notice if they change it up. That said, my morning brain jolt has been delicious every time. They have been more necessary than ever since the movers picked my de Longhi burr grinder and Friis Coffee Vaults to take them far from another winter. I have to walk the long 4 1/2 blocks in a total miasma until I can cop a cup. Pastries are terrible for my health (yours, too) and there's are just delicious. I've only had the plain butter scone, though I'm looking forward branching out. It's 7:15AM and I'm waiting outside now. I know they open 30 minutes later on Sundays, but I started the review in bed and had too walk over. The baristas are very pleasant and knowledgeable. I get a kick out of discussing coffee flavor notes and finishes as if I were in deep discussion with a sommelier. read more

Fantastic new addition to the neighborhood. As someone who has toured fine coffee shops from coast to coast, I can say this is a gem. The environment feels like you've stepped into a Parisian cafe. I've sampled the espresso and cortado. Both cortados were spot on in taste. Of my two espressos, one was lovely with the perfect amount of crema, The other was a tad bitter showing a lack of experience from this particular barista. They are pouring double shots but cutting off halfway through the pour for a single shot which is not how the machine should be used. They feature Balthazar pastries which is lovely and soon will have a liquor license for beer/wine. The owner is a joyful, generous welcoming spirit. I have no doubt that this shop will become a mainstay in the neighborhood. read more

I had a pretty long day and I needed to catch up on some reading and unwind a bit. My buddy told me there was a good cafe up the street called "Henry something something on the right". They get four stars instead of five because they don't take credit cards and it's 2014. If they start taking cards I'll update this rating to a 5 star. I have two kinds of mornings in my life. Ones that start at Henry's Local, and ones that involve me drowning in a sea of self-hatred and confusion caused by either hangover or skipped alarm clocks. Imagine what my days would be if there was no Henry's Local at all. Enjoying the quietude of the early morning or late evening here is pretty special. It's a cozy space and the baristas are kind -- they're cash only and they've many times just asked folks to just pay the next time they come in. The owners are often around, too, and one of them is responsible for many of the tasty treats that line the counter. This place is fairly central to my mental health. I'd suggest you see if it can ease your instabilities, as well. Also, if you're in Red Hook, check out their sister place on Van Brunt -- the Black Flamingo. read more

This has become my go to coffee place in the neighborhood. It's coffee competes with Blue Bottle, which is a little bit of a hike from the neighborhood but gives you something to compare against. This place is great and you don't have to be a local to love it. That being said, it's out of the way if you are not. I'd give 5 stars but there are somethings that bug me despite the AMAZING coffee they pump out. First is that the staff are just not professional. An order longer than 2 items poses serious difficulty for their memories. They make coffee in the incorrect order, simple fast drinks are made before the harder ones leaving one person waiting with cold coffee (or finished) before the order is complete. This is compounded by the slowness of the staff at making the coffee in the first place. The price is pretty good for the quality of the cup. Compare against Blue Bottle. You will see. read more

Wow! What an amazing find. I'm so happy I have another neighborhood cafe to hit up. Latte was good. Iced pineapple tea was great (not sweet, just how I like it). I got a baguette salami sandwich, which was fine. They have very few sandwiches for sale everyday. They don't really have much to eat -- I don't mind that. Wifi and lots of plugs and a good amount of seats. I'll definitely return here! Also, perfect temperature!!! Not vegan friendly. I found out today they're no longer setting out dairy alternatives for coffee and are charging a dollar extra for a small splash of almond milk. I don't understand why they would cheat their customers this way, especially when there are so many other great cafes in the area that don't do this.
