They use counter culture beans and the Ferrarri of espresso machines, a La Marzocco. Here are my qualms: the seating feels very far from the espresso bar, and I've had several burnt espresso drinks here. Obsessive coffee freaks like myself enjoy the craft of pulling a shot and like to watch baristas in action and you are kind of cut off from that action when at this joint. I also find the ambiance a little overly contrived, though I appreciate the effort and care that went into the decor. The food is really incomparably good for a coffee house and I'm surprised by how few people seem to order it. They obviously care about their produce. Root Hill. I want to like you. And I like parts of you - like your decor. Smokin. But eight dollars and fifty whole cents for quite possibly the most mediocre sandwich I have ever eaten? I've gone to this place a total of 6 times. I find the tea to be really good and I am able to plug in and get a little work done. But I think today was my last day going to this place. I get the impression that the staff secretly loathes the customers and I can't understand why they frown upon the people doing work in their space if they allow free wifi! Not your average coffeehouse. A perfect little spot on an endlessly bustling street a few doors down from the world's best taqueria and across from a rock club, Bay Area-wannabe bar and, well, nothing else but high rises. Root Hill does what so many others fail at trying...bring us a sustainably designed cafe and thoughtfully planned menu with just enough area to make for an intimate music space on occasional evenings. I've seen two performances there, and it's a secret location where the truly talented like to exercise their vocals while getting a little lift from the locals. Oh, and the place is empty during the day (free from babies who take over most other Park Slope cafes) and, well, the owner is just dreamy for orchestrating her vision and being just lovely. read more

Pros: Laptop friendly, with basically about 6-7 people able to use the power outlets. Good food (not just bagels & muffins). Uncramped seating. Good music selection. Cons: No A/C, at least not today, and it's hot outside. Breezy is okay for spring but there are flies in here. Woe be the laptop user stuck sitting by the bathroom. WiFi slows down sometimes. The coffee is nice. The new set up isn't as homey or cosy as the old one. The music is super loud so it's not super easy to hear whoever you're there with. Yes, the coffee is great. The atmosphere is equally fantastic. The people behind the counter are welcoming and answer all your questions about the famous Clover (which is a pretty cool gizmo - you can watch it work by looking at the mirror placed strategically above it). The food is reliably tasty, morning, noon or evening. The vibe is relaxing, a tribute to great design of materials you'd think might be too austere. The walls are exposed brick with curious carved-out areas (former windows and door, maybe?) The furniture included eco-friendly cantilevered stools and tables and long, comfy cushion seating in a well at the end of the counter. You can sit here for hours. Stopped by this place while waiting for a friend to check out an apartment. Wasn't terribly hungry but was in the mood for a drink a something to nibble on. I decided to get the iced chai and raspberry-carrot-cream cheese muffin--both items were superb (especially the muffin)! Really hit the spot. Although it was a tad pricier than what I usually go for, and although we decided against getting that apartment, I don't see that stopping me from going there again another time. I went in there Sunday morning. i gave my order to the counter person, and she had me repeat it four times. And they still got it wrong. I know the marathon probably brought them more business than they're used to, but it's not like they were slammed. And they could've written down the order. For some reason I wasn't really expecting much when I dropped in on this cafe to escape from the rain but it was surprisingly awesome. The Chai Latte was really well made. Also had a huge slice of pecan pie which was delicious!! The baristas were super nice, the bathroom was clean, and the wifi was free and quick. I happened upon this place via Yelp while searching for a cafe with free wifi (and A/C on this humid day!) I have to say I agree completely with Sarahana in regards to the staff being great about people working on their laptops. Literally 80% of the people were on their laptops working (including who i later found out to be the owner, who graciously offered up a seat at her booth when the rest were full). On to the food/drinks...i ordered an iced green tea and chicken salad sandwich and, much to my delight, it was served with a side salad and one of the most delicious pickle wedges I've ever eaten (and i'm not a big pickle person!) The chicken salad was served on some sort of whole grain bread and was absolutely AWESOME. Will definitely be having that again. The green tea was good - pretty standard - nothing amazing but did the job. =) Otherwise the atmosphere was pretty decent: comfortable seating options, plenty of light, good music and a very clean, nice restroom. The staff is very friendly, they play great music and they have very good coffee; usually an interesting iced option too. ..and they know how to make espresso! ..My favorite cappuccino in Brooklyn. This is a great place to grab coffee and get some work done. It's very cosy, the coffee is good, and the people are hospitable. Also the food is really good; not like other cafes with dry pastries. I think they make a lot of it (or all of it?) in their kitchen. The frittata is one of my favorites, as is the chicken pot pie. read more

The staff is extremely rude and though there are lots of outlets to use with their free wifi (which is painstakingly slow!), the manager wont let you use any of them if your computer cord is in any walkway at all. They food is pretty good, the playlist is enjoyable and the decor is pleasant. But don't come here if you actually want to get work done. It's impossible! read more

Two words can be used to describe this place: mediocre and expensive. I was really liked the idea of having a coffee shop on the block and was excited when they reopened this Fall. I've since gone a couple of times now and have been amazed at just how expensive their offerings are. I had a small pastry recently (it was finished in 6 bites) and a cup of coffee and was amazed when the price came up to $10. Really?! My advice, skip this place and head up the hill to other cafes that offer a higher quality selection and actually fill up your coffee cup. read more

Let's get this out of the way: the coffee rocks. I'm not a frequent cafe "worker" - if I do need to work, it's of the "on my blackberry or cell for 20 minutes while trying to catch a break" type work, and nobody gave me the gas-face here when I had to do it. Yeah, so in addition to the kickass brew (I had the brew, not the espresso), what I liked about this place is that the baristas have a sense of humor and humanity about them - no attitude and seem genuinely to want folks to feel comfortable. Whoa! This place used to have friendly and aesthetic seating. After their basement majorly flooded, they moved the kitchen upstairs. Now there's a thin slice of backless seating lining the side wall. i have to say..this place is pretty amazing..it really has become an institution in the neighborhood after only a few years.. my day usually starts there and often finishes there too... the espresso drinks are top notch and they have added a lot more food which is a very welcome addition. i highly recommend the orange coconut cardamom cookie and the grain salads! the space is so much brighter and pleasant now after the recent renovations, which though i know was brought on by repeated flooding..it has made the place even better...blessing in disguise.. they also seem to be taking another space down the block..can't wait to see what else they are up to! read more

A very pleasant surprise. Ducked in out of the cold for a coffee which turned out to be wonderful. Tried their spicy BLT. The best this side of BarBacon. Perfect bacon, roasted tomatoes and special greens on whole grain. Will be back soon. read more
