I was a carpenter, so I do have woodworking experience, but I think a beginner would do just as well in this class. I loved it so much,I bought all of the equipment needed to make more! I was searching for a very specific cabinet hinge to replace a broken hinge in our kitchen corner cabinet door. Not only did the staff help me identify the exact replacement hinge that fit perfectly -- but also helped me to figure out the 'trick' that was needed to exactly hold and leverage the hinge to open it. Huge thumbs up for being the friendly neighborly hardware store that we all can depend on. That is becoming increasingly rare these days. read more

The manager does not have good customer service etiquette. The return policy is not good and the way it was presented to me, rude!

This is my first ever Yelp review but I had to shout this place out because I had maybe the best customer service experience of my life here?? (Sounds dramatic but is true). I walked in the other day with a repair project idea but very limited knowledge of woodworking. Kelley talked me through options, did not try to upsell me on any products, drew me some helpful little diagrams, was not pushy about signing me up for their email list, and was just overall delightful. She spent probably 20-30 min helping me out, and I left feeling confident that I can save my little table! Great store and thank you Kelley!!! read more

Fantastic little wood working store with a MUCH better selection of actual wood working tools than you can find at the big box stores. Comparing prices they also beat the local lumber stores for smaller pieces and dowels. As a woman I was concerned I would be treated differently but that hasn't been the case at all. Every employee I have seen there was great and didn't assume I'm clueless. I needed a drill press but didn't want to drop the cash on a floor model and opted to go with a Rockler brand tool that turns a hand drill into a press capable of perfect 90 degree angles. It's worked wonderfully and is very high quality. Really lucky to have found this store. I've already made several things related to my other hobbies in the field of fiber art which has already saved me hundreds of dollars. I do wish there was a bigger selection of actual wood however. Definitely going to continue shopping and recommending this location. read more

Went here about 3 weeks ago for a very simple job of joining 2 planks of wood end to end. Basically, I wanted to turn 2 short planks of butchers blocks into what would ultimately be a makeshift kitchen island. First of all, they accommodated me on such a short notice. The wood workshop manager, Adam, would go above and beyond if you explain to him properly your desired results. Adam did 95% of the job! He even suggested better ways of doing the project and it turned out really really well! Also added a wine glass rack at the bottom! I'd give Adam and Rockler 6 stars if possible! read more

I am an older woman with a recent fascination with learning how to whittle. I thought it would be best to put "how to not hurt myself while learning to whittle" at the top of the list. So I went into the Rockler Woodworking in the Northgate area of Seattle, and expressed my interest and asked for advise. I spoke with 3 separate gentlemen while there and found their contributions to be very helpful. I was given information about helpful books for learning and using recommended tools and gloves for safety. I was given information about books, magazines, in-store classes and trainings, and given the invitation to come back anytime for more help. One gentleman also showed me some ways to identify types of wood and proceeded to show me examples in their scrap wood for sale. It was a very helpful and pleasant experience with not one single eyebrow being raised about " what is this elderly woman doing in our woodworking store." I recently learned of Rockler's existence and viewed it as a good, new resource for my woodworking. The bloom is off the rose. After problems with delays in orders, errors in orders, a cumbersome return policy (I drove 100 miles to Seattle to return a damaged portable router table and then I was told I had to mail it to the mail office...somewhere else...or accept a in-store credit). The experience made me love the return policies for Costco, Amazon, REI...you name it but anyone but Rockler. Just too much trouble dealing with them. Oh, and yes, I am still waiting for my Forstner bits. read more

I was on a business trip and couldn't do much business with them but despite that they gave me fantastic advice and I bought what I needed and could pack in my bags. Prefer Woodcraft Seattle. The store staff there is more knowledgeable and friendly. Their stock of dust collection accessories is not very large at the moment. First experience going in to the store the first two assistants didn't look very long to help me find a dust collection part. Five minutes later I found it myself, then the third store assistant was very helpful. 2nd trip back they profiled me I felt as a woman and treated me poorly. Long story short they told me they didn't have the part and to try Home Depot. I've spent a lot of money buying the Laguna pflux1, Jet 10" joiner/planer combo, Jet 20" bandsaw and several other components for my wood shop over the past two years and will continue to do so from Woodcraft Seattle where they do not profile people and are very helpful and more importantly knowledgeable about woodworking, and their selection of tools is much larger read more

Gotta love this place. Great selection. I wish there was coupons or a used equipment section for beginners to get their shop supplied. It's hard to get going in woodworking as even small beginner tools are expensive and most projects can't be accomplished without a few tools read more

Selection seems much better than other big stores; more specialized towards wood working. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful...I got in and out much quicker as a result but I enjoyed being there (and I don't usually enjoy interacting with the staff in any kind of retail stores). The store manager, Mike, is really fantastic. I've purchased a SawStop table saw and Laguna dust collector from him in the last month and it was a great experience. He answered my questions, and went the extra mile to help when I had some problems with the dust collector working well with the saw. The service and selection makes this my go-to for all future tool purchases, large or small (got my eyes on a jointer and planer next). read more

I gave Rockler-Northgate a chance, I really did, but at the end of the day they kept disappointing. After more than a handful of visits I'm about done with this "experience". A lot of what the other reviewers have said is exactly the way I felt as a (new) woodworker. I read about Rockler being the "go-to" for woodworking tools, expertise, and wood related crafts and although they seem to have a decent selection of tools good luck on getting anyone to actually help you with any informed answers. After visiting several times the aura of arrogance a lot of the staff has is very recognizable and how almost unwilling they are to help customers unless you specifically bug them. You can wander the store for a good hour before anyone even bothers to ask if you need any help. The staff usually can be found grouped up at the front desk chit chatting amongst themselves or with other regular customers who stop by just for conversation during the day. When you do ask a question, it seems they will try and sell you anything. No real advice. No real tips. Nothing to help actually make an informed decision on the products they carry. Just, "buy it and see what happens", was all that I kept hearing over and over again. Their wood selection is OK but over priced and not competitive at all. If you're looking for any exotic wood go to a lumber yard. In the future I will do my best to avoid having to shop here. A couple guys there have been helpful but it's a gamble. Unless you know the exact very thing you need and where to find it in the store there are better customer experiences elsewhere. read more

New, lifelong customer. Working with Michael, the store manager, and John and Bob was an incredibly pleasant experience. They were extremely helpful to me being new to woodworking. Each took time to help me make better use of the new tools I purchased and gave me great advice on how to maintain them. They even went as far as to give me demonstrations with my tools so I could start building proper techniques. This is what I was hoping a woodworking shop would be like but have yet to find. I've been going here for years (started at their Stone Way store in Fremont). There is a younger guy with an ever-so-slight 50s rocker style going (I think he is the store manager) who is always very friendly and eager to offer help. He will always stop and offer help and check on you so he deserves props. Some of the other employees that work there may come across as a bit less eager to help and sometimes you have to hunt them down for help. The expertise and help they can provide is mixed. For example, I wanted to buy the Supermax drum sander but it was hard to get any information out of them. The guy I asked didn't know anything about it. He also didn't know if they sold a Jet 22 inch drum sander. I was surprised that he (and another employee) had to refer to the Rockler website for even basic info on the sander and what they sold in the store. I decided I could just as well look at their website myself so I left, and then found another website (acmetools) selling the same drum sander for the same price plus: a) no tax; b) free shipping (Rockler charges for shipping plus lift gate if required). I never buy wood here as it is expensive and the selection limited (I go to Compton's or Crosscut). Anything basic that you can find at Home Depot (glue or finish) will be cheaper at Home Depot. If you want to buy specialty hand tools or hardware you often will find better quality (e.g. lie nielsen planes) and a generally cheaper selection at Hardwicks (although not always on both counts). That is not to say they don't offer high quality speciality tools (they do). Rockler excels at providing a lot of innovative high quality items such as supplies for jigs (t-track and hold downs), flexible dust hose, innovative quick connect adapters, hard to find hardware, etc. I find they have an edge over Woodcraft on jig components and accesories. Whenever I build jigs I almost always end up at Rockler. Also I frequently find very reasonably priced items on sale (their carbide router bits are good quality). I wish they sold acrylic for jigs and 5" dust fittings. read more

I'm a young avid woodturner and I've been turning for about 8 years now. Im only 30 so for me its a different dynamic than most of the oldtimers. My girlfriend works in northgate and she told me about rockler. I've never been to this one but I've been to others in other states so I was excited to go in and check out their selection of wood and tools and all that. I was severely let down. It felt like a very depressing store. I'm surprised they are still in business considering woodcraft is awesome and huge and they are always happy and vibrant, even if you're from up north, woodcraft is worth the drive. They should price their wood more competitively. If someone is going in and looking for exotic woods, they probably know their stuff. Don't insult their intelligence with those prices. read more

I stopped by with a problem - two custom cabinet doors bought at Home Depot and then made for me by a 3rd party were too big for my cabinet. Home Depot told me that I would need to send the doors back to the 3rd party company to have them shave off 1/8th inch. This was going to be a huge hassle. I stopped by and inquired if Rockler could trim it for me. Lawrence did the job and didn't even charge me. He was friendly and professional. He even chatted with me about staining wood and gave me a pamphlet on the topic. I had a great experience in this store. read more

If you are looking for something really specific related to wood working they almost certainly have it. The sales people are really nice and approachable, in fact they will often approach you ready to help. I find the products to be fairly priced, especially since many of them are specialty products that aren't stocked anywhere else. read more

Claims to "take a personal interest in your project" - ha ha. First time I stopped by I met with a super friendly salesman who encouraged me to come back with samples of the wood I'm working with to test out options. So hoping to get some much needed help I made a special trip, only to have the only person working there (the manager no less) look at me funny for bringing in samples, essentially mock my choice of wood, and show me my options by reading labels off the cans and walking away. The opposite of helpful and arrogant to boot. I will take my business to one of the local shops where they actually make an effort. read more

I found the new store to have a bigger selection and was impressed with the new format they are using which appears to be the reused warehouse. They had large crates with specials in them and a demonstration was happening on a stage when I was in on a Wednesday night. I know very little about hardware and woodworking. On the advice of an employee at Benjamin Moore I went to Rockler to find out about a way of covering blemishes on my BRAND NEW cabinets from Canyon Creek Cabinet Company. I learned a lot from a couple of guys there, particularly John. He and others treated me with respect which often doesn't happen at the big box hardware stores. I know now some questions to ask. I am an amateur, but Rockler's introduced me to General Finishes stains and clear coats and I have come out looking like a star. I have actually had other people ask if they could hire me. I will also tell you that since I am an older woman, the staff at another hardware store told me I should leave this kind of work to the guys and go home and make curtains. I don't generally write reviews but I think a review of this store could do it some good. This store just feels unwelcoming, from the location, the layout, the lighting, and especially the manager. They also have the unfortunate burden of a terrible parking lot where every stall is just wide enough to squeeze a compact car in. Parking at their old Stone Way location wasn't much better. When this new location opened and I went to check it out I thought they were perhaps still getting settled and organized because it looks like everything was organized by happenstance. The lighting as well makes you feel like you are in a walk in freezer or a factory. A few of the people who work here are great, they give great tips and help give you suggestions if they happen to not have what you need. Then there is who I believe is the manager, I think I would be able to put up with everything else wrong with this store if it wasn't for him. He is loud, brash, and acts as if your presence is an inconvenience to his day. I think he must feel that his days would be perfect if it wasn't for all these annoying customers bothering him. I've also seen him treat other employees with as much regard as he does customers. I can see why everyone there looks depressed. I was hopeful for this store because of its location but I think in the future I will be taking my business elsewhere and take the extra 30 min. drive to a store that doesn't make my day depressing. read more
