I don't live near Greenwood Hardware but a few times over the past 13 years of living in Seattle I've stopped in and they've always had what I needed. I bought a reel lawn mower in 2011, a photocell for my outdoor lights sometime shortly after that, and in 2025 I needed a hook blade utility knife. I think it was James who helped me out. I could not find them for the life of me but when I asked, he showed me where they were, helped me choose between the options, and sold me a really nice Milwaukee utility knife that was probably overkill but I like quality tools and it was nice to have that level of knife to cut through some tough Marmoleum flooring. I've read through the negative reviews and I think people should extend some grace to anyone trying to hire and retain quality employees in this day and age of self-centered people. It seems they acknowledge the negative experiences and commit to doing better. I think it's hard to expect more from people and I doubt anyone consistently gets better service at a big box store. I appreciate the small independent business owners who can stay afloat anywhere but particularly in business-hostile Seattle. I don't have a hardware store like this in my neighborhood (Leschi) so I think those who live nearby Greenwood should be thankful to have this neighborhood resource. read more

Whenever I need something for a house or gardening project, Greenwood Hardware is my go-to! The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the store is well-stocked (it's also pretty cute for a hardware store!). Everything I have bought here is good quality and fairly priced. One of my favorite things about Greenwood Hardware is their involvement in the community and commitment to getting people into the store who may not traditionally frequent hardware stores. The past two years, I have attended Greenwood Hardware's Ladies' Night and it is always a smashing success! They close the store to the general public and host an event for women of all ages. The whole store is 20% off, they do a raffle for some awesome items, there are local vendors, gift bags, and wine and cheese/crackers! It's one of my favorite nights and has truly made me a loyal Greenwood Hardware customer. I hope this event lives on forever, I have no doubt I will be doing my best to attend every year. read more

Having been my favorite hardware store for many years, I won't give it less than three stars. However, I've left there twice this month, thinking I won't go there again. The first of these two times, I was met with what was nothing less than mansplaining, which came with a side of apparent frustration on his part. Admittedly, I ended up buying things I knew I wouldn't need to placate him. This time, when I returned those things I didn't need, I was spared the mansplaining, but when I asked the woman helping me which of the five similar but different saws was the cheapest and would also do the job, she replied, "We're both looking at the price tags, so you tell me." Albeit a true statement, I would have liked more information and less attitude. So ....maybe it's the day. Perhaps it's me. Maybe it's the effect of the world we now live in. I know I don't like it. They were upfront about the price of installation and it was significantly lower than the other places (those that would actually quote me an estimate without a costly technician visit) On the day of the install, the installer was great! They explained everything they were going to do. They were able to move the tank closer to the wall than the original (due to some weirdness with my basement and where the old water heater was). We've used Greenwood HW for water heater replacement, for which they do a decent job. However, we had them service a water heater that had a bad element. They left the unit with no hot water and a clogged mixing valve. They apparently can't do actual plumbing. We rushed to get a real plumber, who said the clog could have easily been fixed. We paid an extra $400 for that. We won't be using Greenwood going forward. read more

Great selection of metric fasteners, when the big box stores I checked had a bunch of mostly empty drawers in disarray. Selection of tools is curated towards nicer stuff. Professional, helpful and reasonable. Could not be more pleased with my Greenwood Truevalue experience! Just got my 50gal hot water tank replaced by Greenwood Truevalue, whom my inspector had recommended. My appointment window was 1-1:30 and Scott arrived shortly before 1:30 to my condo building without issue. My water tank was EOL and tucked in the closet. Scott was well-prepared and as discussed on my appointment call, brought both a 50gal and 40gal just in case. The replacement was smooth and clean with no hiccups and ended promptly by 3:00pm. After the installation, he provided instructions and a few remarks on what was new, which was very helpful. Total came out to $799 for the water tank, $19 for the water alarm, plus tax. I agree with Matt C from a year ago. Things have not changed. Not an enjoyable atmosphere. Have frequented this store many times over last years and always disappointed with the lack of any sense that the people working there enjoy their work. I know I'm just there for hardware but there are many other stores that understand how to make customers enjoy their time at a business. There is a sense that the employees are annoyed if they have to help you. This store is the nearest hardware store for me but I will not go back and travel further. Walked in and saw 3 employees behind the counter, all talking to one other customer. Waited a minute, then when no one acknowledged me, asked if the store sold water keys. One employee said, "down that aisle" as she pointed. Proceeded to search the aisle, couldn't find the water keys, re-asked employee where the keys were and I swear it was like I was pulling her away from her dying mother--she expressed so much irritation at having to walk 1/2 an aisle and point. The water keys were behind a sliding peg board and not visible to customers. Additionally, the water key was $11.99. I'm totally willing to pay top dollar to support a local biz that provides nearby, helpful and convenient service. Unfortunately the employees who were working today 3/27/22 at 11:15am were not friendly (btw customers like friendly) or helpful (btw customers need helpful). I've lived in Ballard/ Greenwood for 24 years and yet only come to this store when I need a fast fix, AND when I don't (or can't) care about price or good customer service. read more

I will never go to another hardware store! This is hands down my favorite place in the neighborhood. I found it during the 2020 snow storm because they, per usual, were reliably open when we needed salt and a shovel. Since then they've helped me with everything from getting new glass for a frame to changing the locks on my 60 year old house doors. I drive out of my way to come to this store. The staff are very welcoming. They have an amazing selection for such a small store. Today I bought organic seeds and soil, a couple of bird feeders (including sustainable bamboo) and bird seed, some starter pots. They answer all your questions BIG and small. They try to get to know you and what type of person you are so that they can help answer your questions. I appreciate this sort of old fashioned approach. They are earnestly interested in helping you... it is not fake at all. The parking lot is small but I've not had a problem with parking yet. I LOVE these guys. It's a case study in supporting local business. A little pricier than Home Depot? Maybe (and honestly, not by much...seriously). But these guys know their stuff and they can really help you out. No wasting time searching for someone to answer a question. And here's the kicker: they just help you out for free! Example: I was replacing a faucet in my bathroom and needed a basin wrench, which is something you have 1) if you're a plumber or 2) if you're someone who replaced a sink once, had to buy the tool, and never used it again. And it's like $15-25. I inquired about a rental (I'd heard a rumor) and the woman at the counter reached under, grabbed a basin wrench from a toolbox, and asked me how long the job would take and what my phone number was in case I didn't come back. I inquired as to the rental cost and she just stared at me, confused. How much per hour? Stare. "You just take it," she said after the figured out what I was babbling about "and bring it back when you're done. No charge." THAT'S a neighborhood business! Customer for life. read more

I don't know how many tool types there are - there are things you use to hit other things with, things that you use to torture other things with - but I have needed a variety of things from light bulbs to a water heater, and these guys have always (EVERY SINGLE TIME) been there for me. In over twenty years, I've never had to return anything because they sold me the wrong thing, and I know that if they had, they'd be crazy apologetic and all. The service is so good that I always leave wishing I could be a tool-using sort and come back more often. I'm not, but if you are - take my place: go there more often! Initially I called another vendor (rhymes with PAST)to replace my 17 yr old water hear and got this insane quote which I politely told them "Hell no". Called Greenwood Hardware and got a quote for half of the other vendor. They were honest in their approach, explained every single thing they were doing and had great customer service. Just like everyone else indicated, their selection is small and if you want to buy a bunch of stuff, prices are better at the biggies but if you need something quickly without schlepping all the way to the warehouse places. I called Greenwood Hardware Friday afternoon for a water heater replacement quote, scheduled it and got it installed the next morning! Scott was great to talk with while he worked, explaining everything as he went showing me how the new heater worked vs the old one.
