This place so consistently exceeds your expectations that it kind of ruins you for places like Home Depot or the big box stores. I can't remember how many times I got to run around at Home Depot and they don't know what is Zürich fitting is or I had to find ring shank screws or whatever. Hear the staff will tell you yes we have that no it isn't available because they don't make it or that's not what you need and what you need is over here. I have done a couple of big home improvement projects over the past year. I built a deck last year and used Stewart Lumber for the framing material. I used a different supplier for the composite decking. I regret that decision. I should have used Stewart Lumber for the whole project. Working with Ryan and his crew was easy and straight forward. The lumber I received was extremely well treated, straight with very little crowning. We mis-cut one board and had to replace it with a Dunn lumber board. There was no comparison between the Stewart Lumber boards and the one we got from Dunn. I wish I had a picture. The Dunn lumber board didn't look like it was treated at all. My most recent project was a 5' x 10' lean-to storage shed. The lumber I received was fantastic. Again, it was all straight, very dry with little crowning. Lumber that is a straight makes building something so much easier. Keeping things "square" is one of the biggest challenges for a DIY'er. Every time we checked, we were within 1/8" square on every wall! Quality lumber makes all the difference! You might save a few cents on a linear foot from another supplier, but you will lose the savings with the lower quality lumber that is split and bowed. Don't risk it. I really do not like writing poor reviews, and as you'll notice, I don't have very many of them... However, I had an experience at this store earlier this week that I feel needs to be shared. On this past drizzly Tuesday, I was coming home from work early because I suddenly became extremely sick with the flu, as in I was coughing to the point of puking in the work stall. I knew we were almost out of sun salt at home and wanted to take a nice hot salt bath (*not* an Epson salt bath. Just a regular salt bath). I went to Lowes, hoping they had our usual preferred brand and they did not. They had "salt" bags that said they were "pure" but also had warning labels not to let it touch the skin. Since I wanted to take a bath in the stuff, obviously that just wouldn't do. Rather than risk buying a new brand I was unfamiliar with, I decided to go to this store, where we've been buying our other bags since moving to the area, formerly as South Lake Union costumers of the downtown Ace. It was a direct stop on my way home from work. Mind you, we buy about eight to ten bags of this stuff a year. I'm no stranger to the price, at all. From the start, I walked in and couldn't find anyone available at the counter. There were a few other customers in the store. 'No big deal' I thought, 'I'll just go in the back area where I know the salt bags are. Usually there's someone out there anyway.' Still a ghost town. I go back to the room with the counter and there is now a skinny older guy behind the counter helping two customers. I'm waiting patiently amid fever chills while concentrating very hard just to stand and not to cough or puke on anyone. Suffice to say I was not smiling. Glory be to the makeup for masking the misery, I felt like shit inside and truly just wanted to go home. When it's finally my turn to be helped, I tell the guy what I need and hand him my debit card. I kid you not, he *literally* looks me up and down and goes "That'll be 22 dollars." And I'm like, "Hold on, I've bought these bags before and they are NOT $11 a piece. They're supposed to be $5.90 and there's no price out there indicating a change. You must be mistaken." And he goes "yeah, no I'm not. That's the old price." So I pull up the website and go, "Look, the price clearly states $5.90" and he goes "yeeahh looks like we'll have to update that." Oh like *you're* going to personally update that, Mr. "I-write-my-orders-on-paper-because-I-don't-even-know-how-to-use-a-computer" let alone manage a website that isn't even yours? Come on now... I work in eCom, and I know how that realm works. As someone who works for one of the biggest customer service centered companies in the world, I also know that you should honor the price on the website, *especially* when there's no price on the floor. *Double especially* when said product can be ORDERED from the website for the other price like we did previously before we learned they just carry it in stock here. You don't get to just look at me, judge by my work clothes, and more than double the price. I don't get mad very often.. I got REAL mad. At a loss for what to do because I knew downtown Seattle's store doesn't readily carry the salt bags (I know this because we've been ordering this particular salt from Ace for more than *3 YEARS* at the same low price) and even if they did by some miracle have it, the likelihood of me making it there in my bad shape was small and I was only 6 minutes from home, I made my LAST and FINAL purchase there. Ever. Feeling rather hosed and defeated, I went to back area again where says asshat said someone would "get me set up" (didn't you already do that?) and I waited. And waited. And shivered and waited some more. By this point, I've got so many curse words flowing through my mind, I'm wishing I was well so he'd really see what pissed off looks like. Under normal circumstances, I have no issues carrying 40 pound bags of salt to my car as I used to BAIL HAY on my parents' farm out in Enumclaw. But again, I was sick with the flu. I storm back into the small room and only when I start raising my voice does anyone -one of the owners, in fact, who has helped me before on my brighter days- pop out of nowhere to help me carry them. And I thanked him a few times for that, but am TOTALLY BAFFLED that he's okay with letting one of his workers screw a customer like that. As I'm popping open my trunk, skinny Snake-ass yells from behind the counter "We're all independently owned!" Well that's great sir! You can keep the rest of your 'independently-owned-DOUBLE-the-price' salt, and I'll just take my business back to my old downtown store or Enumclaw's, where I know the people and also know they won't gouge me just because I'm dressed fancier than the average carhart worker. read more

I always support local businesses. I have been a customer here for like 31 years. Get my lumber to rock salt from them. I have moved on. I use to manage an apartment building, so this were I purchase all my supplies. They guys are very helpful. Tell them what you need and they will set you up. I have moved to Kent, WA, but will always come into Seattle to purchase what I need from here. Always helpful. Thank you guys I will still always come back. I know you deliver to my house now in Kent. Prices are good. Lumber is very nice, not like others just sell lumber and don't care about quality. Stewart and Dunn lumber Companies are both we'll respected lumber yards. Can't go wrong with either. My 1st choice is Stewart Lumber. read more

I have been to this store several times for work, and every single time I've had a negative experience here. I no longer ever want to come to this store. I've had yard employees be extremely rude to me several times, and had to wait forever to get 2 boards once. The desk guys can be nice, but also they tend to chat with people and keep the line waiting forever. The layout of the store itself is like someone's shed. All of the aisles are extremely tight and cramped, and it's hard to find anything because there are no signs. I really want to support local businesses, but I always have a much better experience getting lumber at Dunn and supplies at Lowe's. read more

Stewart is the absolute best, for lumber, other building materials, hardware, tools, paints, some kitchen items, and all else. This one-of-a-kind small business, affiliated with Ace, welcomed us when we first moved to Seattle 2 years ago, with ready and knowledgeable advice, friendliness and humor, personal service, and a thorough inventory of all that we needed. My husband thought he had gone to heaven when we discovered Stewart. It was always filled with contractors, who regularly buy materials and tools here. Purchased 10 cedar deck boards. When I went out to the yard, I was not allowed to reject boards that were clearly damaged. They claimed that for decking you only need to see one side, but my deck is one floor up and you do see the backside. I did a return and went to Home Depot. Paid a little more for clearly better quality boards. read more

So when I first moved into my apartment on Beacon Hill I had a slight freak out. Turns out that most of the outlets in my apartment are only 2-pronged plugs. That meant nearly everything I needed to plug in, of course, had 3 prongs. Well after searching for the nearest hardware store I found this place. I ended up here asking the store clerk, who was chuckling at my stressed out nature, what I could do to fix it. My Dad had informed me they sold converters so I was looking for those. The very patient clerk helped me find them in the store and explained what they did and such. He also helped me find some other really basic items and was super patient about my general stressed out nature while moving. They had everything I needed without the big box feel of some other home improvement places. And the staff was considerably more knowledgeable and they obviously care about what they're doing. I found this lumber yard at the end of a long quest to find someone, anyone, who could cut down a large banister post. The thing was too big for the saws at Lowes or Home Depot, and I had been to a couple of lumber stores that had said they'd cut it for around $30 if I came back at an appointed hour the next day. I walked into Stewart Lumber around 5PM on a Friday and they cut my stuff very well and refused to take any money. They just asked me to think of them the next time I needed lumber. And that I have. In addition to being very helpful people, Stewart Lumber has a larger selection of molding and lumber than the Lowes down the street, and at lower prices, to boot. Support local businesses!! These guys gave me a much better deal than Home Depot and were SO friendly and willing to help. I'm building a cajón drum, and not only did they carry all the wood (and screws) I needed for the project, but they even gave me a deal on cutting the pieces to the dimensions I needed them (and even cutting a hole in a couple pieces where I needed it). I definitely recommend this place -- especially if you don't own some of the power tools you might need to cut your wood (because they'll be happy to do it for you). It's the service that really makes them stand out. These folks really know their products, and really want to make sure you get what you need. If you don't, bring it back and they'll try again--without judgment or hassle, with a full refund. They are friendly and welcoming and go above & beyond. When I needed trim for our doors & windows, I brought the profile in to comparison shop. Joe looked at it and suggested that instead of ordering custom milled trim, I get a router bit and bullnose the boards myself. Instead of $6/ft, I spent about $2/ft ($3 for the widest pieces, $.72 for the narrow). We saved at least $300. The trim looks great--exactly like the 100 year old original pieces. Every piece of lumber we've gotten at Stewart has been in great shape. The service is amazing. Why would I go anywhere else? read more

While I really want to like this hardware store, they were closed at 1:30 pm on the 1st sunny Saturday in Seattle all year. Update: Drove by on a Thursday night before 7 pm, and they were closed, again. Small businesses wonder why they have to close their doors, this is the reason, not being open when customers are most likely to shop. We drove out to Woodinville to give another place our business, who we know is open and has the item we need. read more

I bought a few 4 x 10 doug fir beams and some pressure treated posts, and 6 x 6 piers from there. Great products..., because the knowledgable attendant babies the lumber. He allowed me to be picky and didn't become frustrated when I made him roll a few beams. Their prices are slightly higher than the big chains, but their service is awesome, it's veritable to the lumber yards in suburbia I was used to - very white and very nice(that's a compliment). The extra cost is worth it, because you're in and out in a flash, without being held up to kill your workday at Home Depot or Lowe's. When it comes to very uncommon stuff, they will have to special order, but so does the big chain stores. Did I mention they baby their lumber? I love that! The other places I recommend for great lumber is Limback's at Ballard & McLendon's. McLendon's got 2 x 4 Doug Firs... beautiful stuff, and given lots of TLC. read more

I can't stay silent about the wonderful attention and care I received from Bob and his cohorts at Stewart Lumber about a very unique need for materials to hang an art installation. They were particularly supportive, and generous with time and materials and tools for this community art project in the south end and helped me with pricing to match my budget. They love supporting community and art. I'm lucky to live close by as they are my go-to-first stop to find construction materials for my home and every day project needs anyway. I cannot recommend this place enough! They have fabulous prices on lumber, deliver for free with a $100 order, are friendly and nice, and are so much more qualified to help you than any Home Depot or Lowe's employee I've ever met. I ordered cedar siding shingles for a house demo/rebuild project, and Bob was so helpful in making sure I got the right product, had all pieces of my order, and did everything over the phone. My favorite hardware store in Seattle!!! It is like heaven! If I can't find something than I go here. The men who work here are brilliant and know everything about everything. They have the best trim, best lumbar, and the best tools. They even have customer appreciation day. I got a free shirt, a free lunch, and was able to try out all the Hitachi nail guns!!! Great little gem of a hardware store. This is where I go when I have a first-time project and want to get it right. Stock is lean because they know the best product to get the job done. Everybody in the store is not only an expert but will take the time to explain what you need and why. Try getting that at Lowes or Home Despot. You want high quality Ipe decking, the right fasteners for an invisible install and the best quality finish? This is your only stop. Hours are a bit tough but I will wait until Sat to go there because they really know their stuff and are patient with you and set you straight. Doesn't matter if you are a newb, a DIY hobbyist or a contractor, you see them all here. Walk into the back and check out the warehouse. It's like going back in time. The floorboards are those old-school ultra wide cut jobs all shiny with age and use. Very cool. Family owned since 1926 and still around because they do what the Home Warehouses don't. read more

Terrible customer service by both the owner and the bearded Arkansas dude working the yard. Wouldn't let us pick our decking boards after we had to return a batch they delivered in mediocre condition. Kept saying this is not "Lowe's", well I have always received much better service at the aforementioned business. This place is wonderful! The staff was so helpful, informative and patient. I originally had gone to Lowe's to buy some lumber and have some of the lumber cut at the store. Lowe's in store saw is always broken, and Stewart's came through for the lumber and the cutting! The wood was very affordable, and the service was quick! Stewart's is able to hang in there because of old-fashioned service and ambience. I'd guess if you make about four purchases they bestow "regular" status on you - it's really like a 'Cheers' hardware store, and everyone knows your name. My SO was given the regular's discount early on, so we try to buy our home improvement stuff here as often as possible. Once a year they have a cookout, where you can pile up your plate, talk to vendors, gossip and maybe, if you're lucky, get a cool t-shirt and cap. I walked in to buy a 4x12x8' pressure treated beam today. $50+ paid, get in truck drive around back, bald guy (late 20's early 30's) on forklift starts loading a 10' beam that is damaged and leaking green pitch profusely out of both sides the complete length of the beam. I explain that it is for the front step of a custom home. He says, "nope,we aren't allowed to dig thru the pile, I have to take what's on top". I've worked at lumber yards and drywall yards, I know about damage loss. I am always really candid with the loaders, if I need a landscape timber, I don't mind the half damaged piece as it will be in the ground. This particular occasion, I needed a clean piece of wood, and I explained this to him. "Nope, not allowed to dig thru the pile" and then goes on to explain that he was giving me a 10' piece to make up for the bad piece. WHAT??? I only need 8' of beam dude. I tell him he just lost a customer, and he shrugs his shoulders and walks away. What a dipweed, this dude has no idea how many lumber yards have gone under in the last 5 years, he should be bending backwards to keep customers and keep his job. I drove back around front and went back inside. Informed guy at the counter of what happened and he wanted to go get me a good piece of wood. He was cordial, but I was done, so I got my money and left. Seems like they have 2 separate policies, the forklift driver says one thing and the inside sales rep says another. Get on the same page folks. Also, do yourself a favor and get a real forklift loader who actually cares about the needs of a customer. read more

Found these guys after a hair-pulling afternoon of failures at the Lowes across the street when I thought, "there HAS to be something better out here" . . . Quite simply the only real hardware store in Seattle. Tools, parts, lumber, supplies, and associated goodies. The staff know their stuff and are helpful, sincere, and not afraid to set you straight. They will cut lumber to order and are probably the only place in town that will do it accurately to your specification. They have everything you need and nothing you don't. What they do have is worth buying; no cheap crap here. Prices are fair, location is great, and the staff are professionals. I hope these gents stay in business for the rest of my life. read more

Great little hardware store! They cut my 4 sheets of glass for me on the spot, which is a huge timesaver. Excellent selection, quality key cutting including a large selection of car keys, good prices, great service, friendly and helpful atmosphere. Stewart Lumber is the real deal. These guys are always so helpful when I go in, whether it's for a new light switch, a particular size of bolt or screw, or materials for my woodworking class. It's great that so much of what they sell is by the piece, like a proper hardware store, so I don't need to by a package of 12 of something when I only need 2. Clayton is great -- super helpful and fun to chat with. Stewart Lumber is such an asset to our neighborhood, which is losing its character at an alarming pace. Once you get in the habit, it's a no-brainer to go here first instead of a certain big box down the road. Everyone who works here must love their jobs. They are all friendly, personal, and having fun while they work. They know their business well and can help you discover the solution you need. I love that they sell nails and screws by the pound rather than by a box. While the hours are setup for the building trades if you can get in there in time you won't pay anymore than going to a larger box lumber yard. read more

I can't emphasize how much I like this place. They're super friendly and helpful. I was building a fence and they were more than happy to answer all my basic questions. On top of that, I mis-ordered a bunch of lumber that I had delivered and they were more than happy to exchange it. It was a seamless process and I was able to do it all over the phone in less than ten minutes. The next day they came with the new lumber and quickly took away the old lumber. I have been going to Stewart Lumber & Hardware (SLH) for years and every time I come in looking for something for a project Bob first gives me a warm welcome and then walks me through the store helping me find all the items I need. This week, I came in and told Bob that I needed something to cover chips on my stove and to my surprise he showed me appliance touch-up paint and it worked great to cover the chips. SLH carries everything plus the store has a staff that gives excellent customer service. read more

These guys are great. I have been in my house for over 28 years and they have been a mainstay hardware for me the entire time. They have lots of different things that you can't find at a Lowes or Home Depot or will order them for you. It doesn't get better than that! They just delivered 5 more railroad ties.. that must be close to 100 I had bought from them building 2 40 foot wide retaining walls 3 1/2 feet tall, and 4 8 ft by 8ft by 3 1/2 planting containers for timber bamboo. Was visiting some friends in Columbia City and wanted to repair a chair for them. Grabbed 10 construction screws from the bulk bin and brought them to the counter, and the very nice guy manning the counter just waved his hand when I asked him how much. Then I asked him where I could buy some power steering fluid, and he found it for me in the store. Very friendly, good selection of what you need to build things. read more

Can it be a pleasure to go to a hardware/lumber store? YES! The nicest people and even if you are female, they treat you as an equal and not as an idiot. Even carried my paint to the car and had a lot of laughs as well. Personal service and smiles all around the place. Just had an excellent experience and came away with all I needed.
