My initial call to Crosscut was pretty good. I was in a bind because Limback Lumber had screwed the pooch and sold my already-purchased Ipe to someone else, and my project was underway. With no restock in sight, I called around. My first discussion with Crosscut was, I believe, with Chris. He was pleasant even while telling me that the place was crawling with customers and someone else had called in sick and he was juggling, and I explained what had happened and he assured me that he'd take care of me, had the planks in stock, and no way would Crosscut sell the lumber they had set aside for me. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I'd had to make a couple of changes to my order as the porch design changed to deal with the job dynamics. Chris handled everything really well, though curiously never offered to have Crosscut deliver, and with 20' boards picking them up would have proven really challenging. Still, when it was time to install and I asked about delivery, Chris said they would definitely do it and, even better, without charge due to the amount of my order. In my view he went out of his way to ensure the sale was a positive experience, and I did get my boards on time. However, many of the boards were either excessively narrow or moderately bowed, which as you can easily imagine makes for an impossible time lining up rows that are the same width. One board was especially bowed and could not be used. I called Crosscut to ask what they could do for me - after all, every other lumber house said that as long as boards were uncut and undamaged they would take them back, no problem - and the guy that answered the phone (not Chris) just snipes at me "Do you want to bring the entire order back?! Sure, fine, just do that!!" in response to my simple question. I said no, I didn't want to bring the entire order back, I just wanted to know if I brought back a board or two or three if I could swap them out. He snipes at me again about how boards aren't perfect width and their dimensions will be "totally different" as the seasons change, as if I had no idea that wood could expand and contract. I said that yes, I understand that the dimensions can shift in various weather, and I'm only trying to get boards that more closely align on installation. He once again sneers at me that it won't matter about dimension on install and what I am asking is a fool's errand and that if I choose to bring boards in for exchange that he'll have to know in advance because I can't be trusted to shop for replacements so he'll have to send someone with me so that will require extra work and staffing, making it crystal clear what a pain in the ass I am as a customer. I've never even been remotely as badly treated by Dunn, or even Home Depot. Maybe someone at Crosscut was having a bad day, but I'll never be a return customer. read more

The person who helped me was very knowledgeable took time to educate me on how to assess the size of the boards and the cost and I left with five samples that will help me make a decision. it's such a gem to have access to such a variety of hardwoods. read more

This is a business that sells select hardwoods to contractors and woodworkers, do not expect the same service that you get at the beauty shop. The selection is great. The staff there is VERY knowledgeable and will help you move, trim, and load your new prized lumber. They also sell some tools. High quality stuff, but that is not their main business so selection is not huge. Crosscut is a little pricey, but worth it to have that kind of selection on hand. Their slab selection is really good and it you don't see exactly what you need, they will source it for you. Really glad that they are in Seattle and still going strong. read more

Our contractor picked up Boos Maple Unfinished Butcher Block for two different sized width countertops that are in an "L" shaped pattern in our pantry. Our contractor installed them and when I saw them I was absolutely appalled. The markings and discolorations on the countertops are horrendous. The two countertops look completely different from the other. I contacted Crosscut but unfortunately no resolution was found. I would not recommend Boos unfinished Maple. It looks nothing like the samples Crosscut showed me in their warehouse and nothing like they do online. read more

As has been said before about this outfit, they have decent product and stock on hand but that's kind of where the good stops. Most folks want to have a pleasant experience when buying thousands of dollars worth of material from a store. But If you prefer a little condescension, arrogance, and general pissy-ness with your wood purchase, they offer that as a free bonus to you throughout your transaction. If you like arguing to get a few LF taken off an S4S board that is largely usable but you don't feel like paying for the 2' split at the end, then you'll really enjoy your time shopping here. Above all, if your day hasn't already given you enough of that 'less than worthy' feeling, try asking for help out with your load or to have a cut done. You'll love the resentment laser focused your way and I think you'll see AND FEEL the Crosscut Hardwoods difference. read more

Okay, first the good. They have every thing you could ever need, including a huge selection of plywood. Now, the bad. In general, they have kind of an attitude, because face it, if you need certain things you have to come to them. And getting that special piece of plywood cut is one of those things they have major attitude about. First, they charge $5 a cut! Then have to spend 5 min hearing them whine while they take your money. Then the guy at the saw will tell you six times that they don't make "final cuts." But they won't tell you the tolerances. An eighth? A quarter? And I see why they don't want to do them. The saw has never been sharpened, it's a total work out for the guy. Then it's not even set up correctly. The rule on the saw starts at the bottom. So if you are ripping 1' off of a 4' board, the entire weight of the 3' section is setting on and closing the cut. Finally, you have to watch every cut. I even did the math for the guy, told him to leave it like that and make a three 12" cuts. Strangely, when I got home, I only had two 12" boards. Well two 11 and 11/16" boards. On top of that the boards were so rough from the dull blade that I got some nasty splinters from handling the wood. Not everybody has a pickup to get full sheets home, nor do they have a shop saw to rip them. This is a necessary service. They charge enough for it that I should not have to go to Home Depot, and buy a new piece of lumber to get it right. BTW I built an entire closet out of wood Home Depot cut for me. 17 drawers and when I was done there was exactly 3/32" of space between each and every drawer, and those cuts didn't cost me anything. If you charge and exorbitant price for your service, I think you can afford a new saw blade. Just saying. read more

So... After much time and a lot of mulling this over I'm writing this review. Just so you know: I used to work here for over 7 years. I started off in the warehouse and doing deliveries and eventually moved on to managing the warehouse and the almost insurmountable times of Inventory! I had great report with my coworkers and the customers... Really. The sales guys are amazing and the inventory is second to none in the entire Northwest BUT the store manager Mike Shaw is a horrendous manager and I would recommend avoiding his interaction at all costs! Quite often the staff would have to tip-toe on broken egg shells to avoid being ripped into. Now that I'm somewhere else I realize how bad it was. The reason I was fired was of an incident that happened thousands of times and was really a reasonable way to handle an issue but this one time, without any warnings, without any strikes on my employment record Mike decided to blow up and fire me at the end of November, less than a month before Christmas! I struggled to get by until late January when I found something else. So if you go here as a customer take this as you like but if you plan on applying to work here I caution you to really consider whether this is the environment you want for your future! read more

Seriously, maybe it was just bad timing, but we had the crappiest service, ever. And really, it wasn't very busy at all. Whoever the guy was didn't communicate to us at all after we asked questions. Instead, he walked around, more involved in helping his co-workers help their customers instead of helping us. As we got extremely pissed and walked out (it took him a while to realize we were out the door), he comes running out after us to half-assedly apologize. We came here on a recommendation, and sure, they may have great product, but their service was so incredibly shitty, we never got to find out and don't ever care to. read more

For me, as I'm sure it is for a lot of you (this year especially), with the economy on the decline, money is tight. This is where hand crafted, homemade gifts can be perfect and a tad bit lighter on the wallet. Lately, I've been in a constant state of experimentation/development of my woodworking skills. To implement this growth toward crafting Christmas gifts, I headed on down to Crosscut Hardwoods to pick up some cool exotic woods for these projects. I hear about this place all the time from my coworkers, but up until now, I've always just worked with woods I could snag from the trash pile at work (mostly domestics, a few exotics). My, oh, my. This place is a woodworkers dream. They have a huge selection of both domestic and exotic hardwoods, veneers, plywoods, and flooring. With the amount of wood this place carries, it can be a bit overwhelming. Lucky for us, the staff here is friendly (a little zany) but very helpful nonetheless. They even knew a couple of the guys I work(ed) with over the past few years making furniture. Which in turn gained me a 10% discount on my purchase. I walked out of here with some very nice zebra wood and some koa, all at a very reasonable price. These exotic woods can be a bit pricey, especially at the specialty stores. It's good to know there are places like Crosscut that allow you to buy these fine woods and not have to break the bank to do so. read more

99.9% of Woodworkers in Seattle know what this place is. It is probably Seattle's best place to get exotic hardwoods, their Domestics are amazing too. I would say Compton's has a better selection for Domestics, but Comptons is more expensive. The service is friendly, and very personal, sort of like a mom and pop's. The cabinet-grade plywood selection, and veneers are vast. Watch out for their special offerings too, such as live-edge Jatoba and closeout woods good for stocking up to make jigs. 10% student discount for woodworking students at SCCC (maybe other woodworking schools too) and a great selection of lumber makes me a very happy girl. They are more than willing to help me find wood I'm looking for, make suggestions on types of wood to use based on my end product, and will rough cut long lumber to length, etc. They just need to keep 6 board feet of wood from anything they cut. They'll even let you buy wood now and come back and pick it up later. I overheard a conversation and it sounded like they might even deliver your lumber to you. Other perks - they have dog treats behind the counter, gave my dog water on a hot day, and didn't mind my dog chilling on the cool concrete floor while I shopped. Though the floor is kinda dusty (as evidenced by the dirt my dog picked up from the concrete), the store isn't nearly as dusty smelling as Home Depot. read more

Great selection, my friends from other cities were surprised that some of the cuts and varieties they have even exist. This isn't the place to go to learn about wood or have the home depot guy hold your hand. I think the front desk guy gave me a quarter head nod as a greeting as I rolled in. There is little information about how lumber is priced, grades, etc., this is a place for people who know what they are doing. Which I am not. So I went with a small order first to make sure I wasn't going to spend thousands of dollars, by the third trip I had the hang of it. Feel free to go in, sort through the boards, check out the lumber. You'll see some amazing stuff that doesn't exist anywhere else I'm aware of. Then be ready to provide your own customer service and load your own wood. It's not going to be cheap, but it's good stuff. read more

I've shopped at CCH a dozen or more times for projects, the staff are helpful, realizing of course if the place is busy and non-woodworkers are asking questions or getting help you will need to wait...but you get good help. What you don't get is immediate hand holding, you need to know already what kind of wood you want, what grade and what to look for. If you come here without any of that, you will need their help and they will give it. The prices are competitive, the place is stacked full of everything you'd every want. I've bought everything from Zebrawood to butcher block. My wife who knows nothing about wood loves this place, they are quick to help her and answer questions. My wife HATES bad service so if this place was like that she would not say "We need to do a crosscut run this weekend, I have a project I want you to build". She would vote with her feet and go somewhere else. If I had a suggestion it would be a resurface of their parking lot. Their price on Maple was half that of another well-known competitor, their wood quality, like all lumber warehouses...buyer beware, if you buy bugs its your fault...know what to look for or ask for help. Overall my experiences here over the years have always been good. Go online and visit some woodworking sites that teach you how to go to a hardwood shop like this and shop intelligently. This place is FANTASTIC!! I came here on the recommendations from a local makerspace for some 1/4" ply for a table I was working on, and the staff there were were really kind and helpful about showing me the birch ply I needed and answering all my questions. I'm pretty sure they could tell I was lost....I think pricing is pretty reasonable, and they're good about giving you ideas on how to complete your project. I'll definitely be coming here for all of my project needs. They'll also cut your ply down to whatever size you need, so feel free to ask!! After an hour of searching and moving around heavy wood on my own (self service) I left. no purchase made. My dad is a big woodworker focusing mostly on puzzles, games and toys. I'll find myself wandering around the warehouse on the phone with him asking what he'd like me to bring back to Montana. The ability to cut smaller pieces off to be used in projects is absolutely fantastic. I am able to bring back an assortment of goodies in the trunk of my Subaru. If your experience with wood materials has been confined to Lowe's or The Home Depot, this place will rock your world. Impressive selection of quality hardwood, especially exotic woods. However, I have to dissent with some of the reviews regarding the quality (or quantity) of service there. It may have been timing, new personnel, or some combination of factors, but the guys there had "I don't want to be here and customers are a nuisance to me" written all over their face. Called Saturday morning and sales guy said they had a HUGE selection of 4/4 White Riffed Oak 6.5" and wider X 8-12' long boards to pick from. When I arrived there wasn't a single stick of WR Oak, or quartered for that matter. I asked the sales guy where all the Oak is and his response was the computer shows 500 bf. the yard boy looked in the back amongst the units of lumber but couldn't find any, that or he didn't feel like moving units around to accommodate his customer. I missed out on 3 hours of work driving from Tacoma, because a sales guy didn't put me on hold for 15 sec to verify the boards he had in inventory. I should have waited for AWI to open I will know for next time. read more

Worst customer service ever. not only did they not ship an item but then they accused me of lying about it until they rechecked and packing and realizedthat they did not ship it. then I had to incur a $50 additional charge to ship it separately. when I asked if they could just send in the mail that was just too much trouble for them.they can't go either way at all seriously epic fail on the customer service front. read more

I have bought multiple solid wood countertops in all three of their wood choices and have never been disappointed. Crosscut Hardwoods has both the best product and price for solid butcher block. It comes pre finished and ready to install and they deliver for free.
