Fantastic experience! They had everything I needed to fix some furniture after moving here. I asked an older gentleman about 20 questions, and he was incredibly helpful and never got annoyed. The pricing seemed comparable to a bigger hardware store, and even if it was slightly more expensive, it was worth it for the customer service. I bought a store brand "Best Comfort" oil filled heater to maintain a low temperature in a bedroom. What can go wrong? It can stop working after 3 months! I couldn't find the original receipt, so it took me a while to figure out how to print out the credit card record which I was told would be acceptable. So just four months after the purchase, I'm told it's not acceptable because the credit card record is too old. Anybody want to take a non-functional heater off my hands? read more

I went to the hardware store on my lunch hour to see if I could get a replacement for a halogen bulb for a very old office lamp. The owner greeted me and went above and beyond, not only getting the lightbulb, but dismantling the lamp, installing the light and being a very pleasant person. I've been going here for years and the staff are patient and very helpful. Recently one of them spent ages helping me find a single screw. As someone who doesn't know much about tools and home repairs, the staff don't make me feel stupid as some other hardware stores have done. Their prices are good. For example bags of planter compost cost less here than the discount price at a local nursery. Be been meaning to write this for some time so finally got around to it. I would rate this store highly except for a recent experience in which they charged more than double in the store for PVC pipe compared to the online price of the same product on their own website. When my husband went back to the store to correct what we thought was an error, the clerk said you can't trust the prices listed on their own website. Huh? A quick check showed that the price they charged in store was also more than double those listed by competitors (Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware). We prefer to shop local and have been happy to give Stoneway our business even if a bit more expensive. But more than double? It's sad, because we are locals who have often referred people to them and have, until now, gone there regularly. read more

I was in the shop today after my bike pedal came apart (while riding) and needed a replacement piece. I didn't know anything about finding the right piece - there were so many options of metals, sizes and finishes. Luckily, an employee asked me if she could help and I'm certainly glad she did! She found the correct piece in seconds, and recommended a much cheaper but better option. That's such great customer service! read more

The location is very conveniently located. However, the staff seem to take their time when processing a request. It took me 20 minutes to get a copy of a key made. They also don't accept purchases under $5 for using cards, which is a bummer. Service was friendly, I just wish they were a little more efficient. This place is a little hard to find, but is really good when you're in a pinch. The selection of materials and supplies here is pretty well encompassing. I shop here a lot. I am a property manager and even though my boss wants me to go to Homedepot but I don't, I come here because I want to support local/small businesses. That being said, I went in there when this whole Covid-19 thing happened and bought a gallon of 99% proof alchohol for $35. I had to return it because boss had already bought some. When returning the clerk says: "you sure you want to return?!, you can sell this for $100 online". My response: I'm just not that kinda person. Yesterday I went in there and they are selling that same gallon of 99% proof for $100. Really?!?!?!?! I feel like they're price gouching and I'm not going to support that... read more

I'd rather shop local than go to the large chain stores. I often shop at Stoneway because they are helpful and know their stuff. However, during Covid not all employees are wearing masks and there are no dedicated directional isles for customers to walk down. Everyone was just too close for comfort. I went here to ask for some guidance around the best supplies to build a table, based on a project plan I had. I was told multiple times by the sexist employee who offered to assist me that "I should really just go buy a table" and "it's really difficult to build a table, you should just go buy one." As good as it gets! Amazing selection, expectational advice and friendly service. We live about 3 blocks away and have been doing a number of upgrades to our home so pretty much know everyone there. I can't think of a negative experience. There has been a few times I decided to drive to the big bad Home Depot thinking Stoneway wouldn't have what I need. Only to find out later they did. And even if its something they don't stock they have access to a huge warehouse with everything you could think of. A couple quick highlights: Had a door knob go bad. So I pick up a new one, looked the same, thought it would work. It was the wrong one and Stoneway happily took back the open box return and I left with I thought was the right one, but nope. So this time I brought the old one with me. Turns out it was just the lock mechanism that was broke. They could have sold me a whole new unit but instead took the time to switch mine out saving me like $40. You're not getting that service at a big box store. Needed input on how to mount our new TV to the wall. The wall mount instructions said to not install into drywall, only into a stud. In the area we wanted there wasn't a stud but it was double drywall so I thought I'd ask the guys at Stoneway. And of course they had a solution. Turns out there are these cool wall anchors that support 40lbs. So using 2 gave us 80lbs of support and we only needed 30lbs. And they have all the other stuff needed like the beauty rings for cords to go into the wall. I'm thinking of tons of other situations like above where Stoneway's service saved me a ton of time and frustrations. While you might be able to save a few bucks buying from Amazon or Home Depot you will not anywhere close to the support or service like you will at Stoneway. Best advice I can give is if you're al all unsure of what you need ASK first. They will give it to you straight and has saved me time, cash and frustrations. And it feels great to support a local owned small business where the owners work everyday. Thanks Stoneway team!! read more

Beyond helpful and non judgemental of a woman who fails at do it yourself projects. I was building a 6 cube organizer and the crappy wooden piece broke off into my shelving and ofcourse there were no extras in the box. I came here to get replacement pieces but also brought the shelf that the wooden piece was stuck in and I couldn't get it out; with low expectations that they would help me with it. The older gentlemen (I wish I asked his name) was all to quick to help, when pliers did work he drilled through it and made new holes for me. Also gave me suggestions for the rest if the project. They are under the same restrictions we all are in being able to hire good help...the ones they chose, rather than forced upon them. LADIES! This is the place for you. I have never gotten ill-treated as a woman coming in looking for anything. I go in with a man and they still talk to ME when I ask the questions. That's HUGE and any woman who's ever been talked down to in a hardware store knows what I'm saying. We have always gotten friendly service, I can explain my project and they don't talk down to me even if they're saying "you know what might work better for you." And if I say I don't like that solution they don't take it personally. I ask for directions to anything in the store and they will either give specific directions (like when I was looking for a step stool) or take me there and help me find exactly what I want (like every other time when I've been looking for fasteners of some kind). Always considerate, always kind, always listening to what I need and making sure I've got the right product for the job (like making sure I grabbed stainless steel for bike screws). They don't always have exactly what we're looking for or the best selection of anything that is bigger than your hand. But when it comes to fasteners, they really do. read more

I really do love supporting local stores, and shopping at Stoneway Hardware in Ballard is no exception. Now that spring has sprung, I try to get a lot of my gardening needs taken care of by visiting their store. They always have the burlap coffee sacks I need for growing potatoes, and when my husband joins me in the store, I spend most of my time trying to find him as he wanders in and out the aisles. I'm so stoked Stoneway opened up in Ballard. This location is bigger than its aptly named first location on Stone Way. I was sick and tired of having to drive to Lowe's or Home Depot every time I needed something. While it doesn't have the overwhelming selection of the big box stores, you'll still be able to find just what you need. Additionally, as a hardware store, the selection of screws, nuts, bolts, fasteners and all those other things you can't find at Lowe's or HD are here. I can pick up all the hardware and tools I need for a project here, and swing by Limback's Lumber just up the street and still save both time and gas that would be wasted driving all the way up Aurora. The employees here are helpful and friendly. The prices are pretty decent too. read more

Stoneway rocks. One of my top three stores because if you ask for something, they will actually bring you to the parts you want. Try getting that kind of service at Lowes or HD! Their hardware selection rivals Tacoma Screw, but the advantage is that you can browse through it yourself to find that funny little nut/screw/bolt that might work for your project. They're also open in the evenings and on weekends where TS is only open for a short time on Sat. TS is geared for professionals who come in knowing what they want. It's one of my favorite hardware stores of all time actually. But Stoneway is the best for the average homeowner who might need a little assistance. I love shopping here. The only store that's comparable is McLendons, which does not have a location in the Ballard area anyways. I'm so so glad they opened up a Stoneway in Ballard. read more

Above and Beyond -- When they didn't carry a certain color of Daly's stain (which I needed to match an ongoing project and Daly's had closed their retail stores) they did a bunch of research for me and eventually sent me across the street to Miller Paint (where I also received service way beyond my expectations). Sure, you can run into individual shop employees anywhere that aren't the best or are having a bad day, but the service and the selection at Ballard Stoneway are head and shoulders better than any box or online store, and you feel good about supporting your local businesses. read more
