During our move to Ballard we somehow misplaced an attachment for our grill, so we headed to Stoneway! Although they didn't have the piece we needed in stock, they were super helpful and referred us to some other local hardware stores that might carry the piece. Disappointed with the service. Sent my partner to get a dozen fairly standard wood screws to finish assembling a wooden rack. He took a screw for reference and asked the clerk for help. The clerk sent him home with a box completely different screws! They had a smaller head (so they wouldn't hold on the predrilled holes) AND were square bit rather than phillips head screws! They didn't even mention to him that they'd require a completely different screwdriver which I don't own and he didn't think to ask since they told him these were the same. This required a second trip to Ace to buy the correct screws and then a third trip to return the useless screws to Stone Way. read more

So I just happen to live on a boat in the Fremont/Lower Queen Anne area and sometimes have special needs for finding things to work on projects on the dock. Stoneway always seems to have what I need and more. This is my one stop shop for anything. If its a screw, bolt, fastener, washer, or tool you need....they have it. The staff there is always helpful and able to tell you where to find things and will always guide you to them. Its basically a man cave of stuff. I could walk around and blow a whole paycheck easily there at any point. All they need is a bar, some pizza, and ESPN and I might just move in and pay rent... read more

The only reason I give 4 stars instead of five is that their prices are higher but some items are much higher, I am all about supporting the local businesses, but some prices need to be looked at closer. That aside they have always been able to help me with any funky situation to find a solution. And if they can't help they have always pointed me in a direction of somebody who could. To the person complaining abut not being able to have wood cut at a specific angle, the answer to your question is, NO. Most hardware stores do not cut specific angles and build frames etc. they will chop things to length but that's about it. read more

I want, when possible, to support local businesses. I will not be returning to this store. Aside from the fact that most things I looked at were more expensive than other stores, no one working wanted to help either my friend or I. My friend asked three different people for help until finally someone helped her. I stood around waiting for ~5 minutes which would have been fine if they were busy--however they were not. Someone even made eye contact with me a couple of times, but ignored me. Unless you know exactly what you want, where it is, and don't mind overpaying for it I would not recommend this store. read more

There's A Real Consumer Hardware Store In Ballard Again: I had an unusual project involving rigging a 1954 Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash film camera for use with an electronic flash. This was part of my sick and twisted Recycle-A-Film Camera campaign in an effort to bring the art and fun of consumer film photography back into fruition. Now, those of you familiar with the Hawkeye are probably thinking "good luck with that. Hawkeyes take 620 film and Kodak doesn't make it anymore". Well, it just so happens that in spite of the fact the readily available and inexpensive camera says to use 620 film, Hawkeyes are one of the few 620 film cameras that will comfortably take still-made 120 film. You hear that, Holga people? And the Hawkeyes have good quality glass lenses. The store is nice and well-organized. It is also of respectable size and has plenty of off-street parking in their lot and for me, it is very conveniently located. The staff there was friendly knowledgeable and helpful. A Great experience altogether and after I left, it dawned on me, not since the old Ernst Hardware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Home_%26_Nursery was in Ballard, has there been a full service hardware store so close to home. It is so nice to finally have a GREAT hardware store in my neighborhood. Now, Ballard certainly has some notable hardware stores, but yesterday I was stumped with my search of parts, until I stopped here. I love a good hardware store. It reminds me of searching around in my grandfather's wood shop for just the right bolt to build a project. This store has that vibe. The staff was incredible, and after a 4 hour search of the other stores in the neighborhood turning up nothing, I found all of the parts I needed within minutes at Stoneway. I appreciate the knowledge of the guys over at Ballard Hardware, but I am a really hands on person when it comes to building the parts needed for my odd projects, and this store had isles of fun bits and pieces, all laid out in probably the best display I have ever seen. I went t get a shower head at Stone Way Hardware, and when I got home, and installed it, I found it was defective, and it sprayed water all over the bathroom. When I went to return it, I was greeted by an elderly gentleman, and told him I have other shopping to do, and he replied go ahead. When I returned with my other purchases, and he started yelling at me " I can't take this back" . I asked "why not". He replied in a yelling voice, "it's not all here", so I asked "what's missing" he replied, still yelling, and said " you used the plumbing tape", I said "yes, of coarse I did when I'm stalling the shower head". He continued to yell at me, and in the end he cheated me out of some of the money I paid for the shower head, and the tax. Isn't that illegal? We started shopping there because we didn't like the stuff we were getting from Amazon. There are another plumbing stores we can go to in Ballard. They also have issues with gay men. I wouldn't shop there ever again! read more

Helped my daughter move up to Seattle awhile back. Moved her into her new place. Fortunately, Stoneway was about a ten minute drive. Not exactly being Scheinder the handyman I had to make about five trips there. Each time the staff was very informative. They listened to my challenge and explained what I needed to do and sold me only what I needed. Prices were good and there was plenty of parking. read more

Yea, finally a real hardware store again in Ballard. Excellect selection of nuts and bolts. Bathroom is not nearly as cool and funky as the Stoneway store but it is all new and shiney. No bike racks but lots of heavy racks to lock your bike too as well! More stuff than Greenwood Hardware and closer (well, at least for me anyway). read more

I came into Stoneway Hardware with a very specific need. You know those circular paper keychain things you can label what the key is for? That was my need. And the Stoneway dude was very nice to point them out for me and they were super cheap...a quarter apiece. The entire time I was checking out, the guy was whistling, which really added to the overall experience. I'm not sure if everybody will get the musical checkout concert at Stoneway, but I would bet everybody gets friendly service there. read more

This Stoneway has a feeling much different from the location on Stone Way. It is bigger more open but has the same great selection, helpful staff and modest prices. Seems like they don't have quite as much in the small screw/nut/bolt/fastener department compared to the other location but it is more convenient and has way more parking so I find myself going here more than the other location. read more

This is a great hardware store. They somehow get a huge range of inventory into what looks like a medium-sized store, and then smother you with the service you can never find at the big box stores. Need help finding this or that? They're on it. And their pricing is very competitive with the big guys. But the greatest thing about this great store is their fastener inventory. I've found some fairly unlikely bolts and nuts there that enabled me to quickly complete various projects. And again, they are there to help you find the exact thing you need. The young sapling that we planted in our parking strip is leaning to the East - considerably. It had been on my list to handle this for weeks and the time was now. I did feel a bit sheepish dashing in 3 minutes before closing, but Keith was warm and charming and knowledgeable as ever. I expected to have to buy an expensive arboreal sling of some kind. Keith totally set me up with a stake and twine and encouragement - he even cut a notch in the stake. He suggested I had a short length of hose to protect the tree, which I did. I had a lot of questions about a project, and not only did they give me excellent guidance, they went above and beyond to help me and offer additional suggestions, which were much appreciated. They spent a lot of time with me and seemed happy to do so. They also went the extra mile and delivered the big, bulky items to my house, since they wouldn't fit in my car! That was just the BEST. Their customer service is tops, and the fact that they delivered to my house ensures that I will go out of my way to go to Stoneway Hardware from now on, even though there are hardware stores nearer to my house. this review is specifically for the jerk who was beyond obnoxious to deal with when we tried to get wood cut. we asked for pieces of wood to be cut at 45 degree angles in order to build a frame. this guy was huffy, rude and yelled at me that they don't do customization for wood cutting. i'm asking you to cut wood at a hardware store and that's custom?? it's standard - grow up and shake off the attitude. we won't ever be returning. read more

The only one who is not condescending and brushes me off is Keith. Keith is awesome! I will drive out of my way to go to the original store as they are always polite and helpful. The selection here is fantastic, I can find everything I want that home depot has but the staff is knowledgeable, the hardware is higher quality, and there are less idiots walking around. This is hands down the best hardware store in the area, except for maybe that other hardware store in ballard on old ballard ave which is better if you need contractor quality tools and bits and such. I really like their site on Stone way, and the ballard one too. Great alternative to the depot and others. When they get inundated with customers, or someone has paint to mix, customer service can get tricky. It's like this everywhere. They keep a lot of people on staff and do pretty well. A lot of times, if I have a labor heavy or lengthy request(paint mix), I'll drop it off and get a time to return for it. They've never let me down. I feel like this is exactly what a neighborhood hardware store should be like. read more
