Now under new ownership by name of Adam Hagen, who learned the neighborhood hardware store business at Lola's right hand. All else the same and just as great as usual. Early on a Saturday morning in June 1991, during my first incarnation as a Madison Park habitué, I walked into "Lola's" (aka Madison Park Hardware), and asked Lola McKee herself what I needed to do to set up a charge account. (I'm from a small town where charge accounts at small, locally owned merchants were common.) Lola looked me straight in the eye for about 30 seconds, then said, "You've got one." That's just the way it was. Lola and the gang became my Saturday morning helpers from that time on, always there to help me find just the right machine screw with just the right threading or just the right power driver torx bit for that week's home project. I could never find that kind of personal help at the old Ernst Hardware stores. Things changed in my life, time moved on, and I moved away from Seattle for 8 years. (Worst mistake I ever made.) Upon my awakening and return to Seattle for my second incarnation as a Madison Park habitué, I walked into Lola's early on a Saturday morning to look for just the right power driver hex bit for that week's home project. And Lola asked, "Where have you been?" And then with a sly smile, she added, "English or Metric?" While I haven't looked into a charge account this time, I'm sure that, were I to do so, Lola would look me straight in the eye for about 30 seconds and say, "You've still got one." Things may have changed in my life and in Seattle since I left town for the last time (I fervently hope) in 1996, but little has changed at Lola's, except that Lola has now sold the business to Adam who has Jeri (Lola's daughter), Bryan (Lola's grandson) and Richard (an old neighbothood hand) to help me just as much as she has always helped me. I even believe that I still catch sight of Lola herself at the till on occasion. The hardware & gardening stock are still comprehensive, the conversation & observations are still just as astute, the neighborhood bulletin board postings are still just as newsworthy & up-to-date, the housewares & toys are still as varied & cool as ever, and any of the gang will still gladly search the back storeroom for that perfect out-of-season item I may need for an arcane home project. (Christmas light strings in July anyone?) And I still can't find their kind of personal help at the "new" Lowe's or Home Depot. read more

This is the quintessental small town hardware store and we are so fortunate to have it. The staff is uber friendly and helpful and I love shopping there. It's like Mary Poppins carpet bag. It's small, but they have everything. I buy all the usual hardware stuff, but also buy toilet paper, silver polish, bowls and toys here. Super great place!!! We love it so much. read more

"Who knows what you might find in here." I overheard this from a woman who stepped in immediately after me. Aaaaand... It's true. I came in to browse/kill time. I love to see what neighborhood stores have to offer. Madison Park Hardware has the knockout combo of selection, price, and service. I don't know how they keep inventory, but it felt like an antique-hardware store hybrid. Things were clearly marked with prices (and nothing was overpriced!) and you could leave with Hot Wheels in canning jars, that nested in a skillet, sprinkled with nails and plant fertilizer. The staff was attentive and made sure that I didn't leave without having questions answered. They even offered a plastic bag for my goodies IN SEATTLE. (Thanks!!) I'll be back when I'm in the are to see what their "clearance" area has. read more

The staff at this store are treasures....I had a really old toilet that was running, and when I described the mechanism, the guy knew exactly what type I was talking about and explained to me how to fix it. I went home and tried it but couldn't get it, so I brought the part in -- he told me I needed a little piece of plastic just the right size. He found one in his store and carved it down a little bit to the right size, and gave it to me for free. read more

I love this place. It has all the essentials--and boy did I need them--along with super friendly folks who are happy to share their extensive knowledge. I came for some mosquito spray (I hate mosquitoes with a passion), and found a bunch of other household items I'd been searching for. These guys are fabulous! Adam and his team fill such a great niche that a lot of neighborhoods have lost to the big box stores. great small local hardware store. A recent Madison Park newsletter said this business was started long ago by the female owner (you go girl! Girl Power!) It's easy to miss seeing this place. It's right around the corner from Pharmaca. I've come here for light bulbs, plumbing supplies, and electrical supplies. This hardware store doesn't feel like it's from this decade. I'm not sure how long it's been around, but it certainly seems old inside. It's very charming while still carrying anything you might want from a modern hardware store. They also carry quirky knick knacks like old plastic lunchboxes and tea pots. read more

Walk in and you're greeted with a not-insincere-not-forceful hello and you feel immediately welcome. If you look momentarily lost, someone will ask, "what can I do to help." I'm always glad to go to MPH to find anything from screws to little games from our toddler. The staff is warm and genuine, but they are also pillars of the community and have been very engaged in community events and supported the kids of the neighborhood for a long time. This is what a neighborhood hardware store should be about and I'm glad to see that they still exist. read more

Great store, well stocked with the basic essentials you need for the handy work around the home. Folks are knowledgeable and friendly . We came in here to get a lighter replacement, some plumbing supplies and also ended up getting a leaf scraper. So in addition to the basics they do have some options for additional convenience. Whatever you are looking for, they will have it. I am constantly surprised at how often I am unable to find something at a big hardware store yet I find it here at Madison Park Hardware. If for any reason they dont carry it, just let them know and they will order it and keep an inventory of it for you in the future. They also have a good variety of quirky household items for any room or project, even toys for kids. The staff is super friendly and will walk around helping you if you cant find anything. They are also really knowledgable so if you tell them what your project is, they will be able to recommend some ideas that you may not have considered. I keep wanting to write this place off because it is so small. But every time I have some project that requires some special equipment, they always seem to come though. When I started canning (who does that anymore?), I was able to get a hot water canner pot, jars, lids, rack, lifters, food mill, you name it. Specialty yard tools, slingshots (and rubber tubing to make your own!), pool floaties, digital thermostats, and that random screw that I just can never seem to have around the house, every time I was about to go on a wild goose chase around Seattle for something they would have it. They also are very friendly and helpful every time I go in there. I've never felt neglected like at the big stores. So before you wander around Lowe's or Home Depot looking for that one little item, searching for help, check out your neighborhood hardware store first. You'll be glad you did. read more

A pretty full service neighborhood hardware store. Not too many of these left around. Plenty of household goods, gardening goods as well as a section just for kiddie stuff if you forgot your beach buckets, frisbee or are heading to a birthday party. Very no frills but has stuck around so have a visit. The kids like the penny gumball (not too many of those around either). read more
