Here's what happened: * The first sectional was manufactured incorrectly. * The replacement was also manufactured incorrectly. * On the third attempt, I was notified before delivery that the sectional was gashed and missing components, so it could not be delivered. Three failed manufacturing attempts. More than a year. Still no completed order. I am out $12,000. I understand that mistakes happen. What I cannot understand is how a company selling premium furniture can get the same custom order wrong twice and then have the third replacement arrive damaged and incomplete before it even reaches the customer. When someone spends over $12,000 on custom furniture, they expect quality, accountability, and customer service that matches the price. Unfortunately, my experience has been the exact opposite.

I finally decided to buy a professional office chair and Herman Miller is one of the top brands. Their Aeron chair is very popular because it is ergonomically designed and highly customizable. I was pretty sure that I wanted that chair, but the old fashioned part of me wanted to sit in one before purchasing online. I could only find one place in the Seattle area that sells new Herman Miller chairs and that is Design Within Reach. I was confused about the relationship, but Herman Miller owns Design Within Reach, so this is like their authorized showroom/retailer. I visited the store on a Sunday morning and I didn't have an appointment or anything. I went straight to the office chairs, but they also have a lot of other furniture (couches, tables, etc). The Aeron comes in three different sizes and they had one of each. A salesperson named Gary helped me and he was excellent. I already did a lot of research on this product and I could tell that Gary clearly knew his stuff. He did a great job of checking on me/answering my questions but he also gave me time and space to just sit and think about it. In the end, I'm really glad that I went to the store and had Gary help me place the order. I ended up making a couple of different decisions on the options than I would have otherwise. If you work for certain companies (Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, etc) you get a discount, so definitely ask about that. Otherwise I believe they have a 15% off sale twice a year. I received my chair about a week and a half after I ordered it. It is really a cool experience. They ship you a huge box, but you just need to open one side and then roll the chair out (it comes completely assembled)! I am happy with my purchase and I would recommend it to others.

Maybe it's the carefully chosen selection, maybe it's the refreshing color palette or the high ceilings and open space that somehow seems intimate. Or it could be the friendly, super helpful owners. Or the distinctly distinctive overall feel of what they've put together. There's a big selection of furniture in their space all coordinated with accessories such as rugs, lamps pillows and all that, kind of modern and smooth, a little bit Asian, some very statement furniture and some just good design that doesn't call too much attention to itself. And watch for their floor sample sales -- more good design at very reasonable prices.

I ordered a custom-made table (basic but sturdy design, literally just a tabletop on 4 posts) and paid for it in full on Aug 3 2020. The first red flag was unresponsive and slow communication. Here's what I emailed them regarding specs (this will be important later): 08/03/2020: "Can you give me a rough sketch of what the finished product would look like? I want to make sure there's no ambiguity or points of confusion. I included my own sketch attached. Please call me when you have a chance." 08/14/2020: "Hi, I've tried to reach you by phone a few times regarding the desk." The 4+ months that followed can only be described as an excruciatingly slow and painful process as I desperately tried to garner any tidbit of information they were willing to throw in my direction. I can't post the entire thread because of character limits but here's a sample of me emailing them: 09/07/2020: "Hi, any updates?" 09/17/2020: "Hi Patrick, I have not heard from you in several weeks now." 09/23/2020: "Hello Patrick, I would really appreciate an update from you." 10/05/2020: "Can you give me a firm date on when will this be ready? I placed the order back in early August and it has been two months now." 10/23/2020: "I have not received an update in more than two weeks. Can you give me a firm date of delivery or at the very least some sort of timeframe besides "soon"?" 12/08/2020: "When will this be done? When I visited two weeks ago you told me it should be done before Thanksgiving." 12/15/2020: "I'd like the table that I paid for in August please" UR had me visit twice, on Oct 24 and on Nov 11 to see the tabletop in person to talk about the color. In both instances, I insisted on a dark walnut stain. I emphasized the reasons why I requested it, emailed them samples of the color, supplied photographs, and even pointed at samples within UR's shop that matched what I was looking. The staff, for whatever reason, seemed extremely reluctant to apply any stain at all on the tabletop and would give only non-committal responses in the vein of "We'll see what we can do". Eventually, weeks later, they claim the table is ready for delivery and send me a photo where they have already applied a finish without applying a stain. I have no explanation for their behavior but at that point I got fed up with the endless delays and inexplicable stubbornness and decided to walk away and asked for a refund. UR refused and said my only avenue for redress would be small claims court (quote from them: "we will look for the paperwork"). When I pursued that, the owner resorted to juvenile insults, emailing me that I "suck ass" then eventually getting his attorney involved. To their credit, UR *did* soon after fix their error and applied the correct stain. I visited in person and the table looked great! I secured and paid for its delivery myself and spent several hours setting it up at its new location. It was only then that I found out two things: 1. The table was the wrong dimensions, and too short by 10%. 2. The table was not actually flat and curved inward (see picture). Returning the table at that point was the last thing I wanted to do after everything that transpired. UR claimed that I had approved the shorter dimensions but I have no record of that in any of our emails. Instead, what I do have is multiple instances of me trying to talk to them to nail down specifications but having a difficult time getting a response from them (see emails above). I was never given an explanation for why the tabletop surface was deformed but the flaw made the table functionally useless for its intended purpose. I fully understood that the pandemic has thrown many supply chains into chaos. It makes sense that materials and delivery would suffer delays; to be clear I'm not blaming UR for that. But the issue here is that over the course of several months it was extremely difficult to get a hold of them or get any concrete updates, and what I did end up with eventually was seriously deficient on multiple fronts. Even though I eventually did receive a refund (thanks to PayPal), time and money was wasted on delivery costs and unnecessary court filings on my end. I'm sure UR lost a lot of money as well! But that was a result of some very basic errors on their end and I don't understand why they'd let this happen to them. Hence my confusion.

For our college kid, we wanted something that would be comfortable when they're home for breaks, but also allow us to upgrade/replace it with minimal remorse in a few years time when they settle into their post-school life. Mattress Firm fit the bill with a decent selection, and helpful Sleep Expert Kevin. We considered mattress toppers and new mattresses. Expert Kevin gave us a brief overview of each choice. We were given time and space to try each in the store with no sales pressure. In the end, our young adult chose the mattress that most closely matched their dorm bed (that they really liked); and being that it was Memorial Day weekend we got it on sale. The main feature of the mattresses in the store seem to be their memory foam tops. I tried a few and found I'm not a fan of the feel of memory foam as a sleep surface. (I can't speak to others' experience with returns. According to the receipt, there's a "return processing charge" which is $250--about what we paid for the mattress. Thankfully, the child is very happy with their mattress selection.)
