Like many people, I've been working from home over the past year due to lockdown from COVID-19. Luckily I already had a desk at home, but my chair is from IKEA and not super comfortable. I finally decided to buy a professional office chair and Herman Miller is one of the top brands. Their Aeron chair is very popular because it is ergonomically designed and highly customizable. I was pretty sure that I wanted that chair, but the old fashioned part of me wanted to sit in one before purchasing online. I could only find one place in the Seattle area that sells new Herman Miller chairs and that is Design Within Reach. I was confused about the relationship, but Herman Miller owns Design Within Reach, so this is like their authorized showroom/retailer. I visited the store on a Sunday morning and I didn't have an appointment or anything. I went straight to the office chairs, but they also have a lot of other furniture (couches, tables, etc). The Aeron comes in three different sizes and they had one of each. A salesperson named Gary helped me and he was excellent. I already did a lot of research on this product and I could tell that Gary clearly knew his stuff. He did a great job of checking on me/answering my questions but he also gave me time and space to just sit and think about it. In the end, I'm really glad that I went to the store and had Gary help me place the order. I ended up making a couple of different decisions on the options than I would have otherwise. If you work for certain companies (Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, etc) you get a discount, so definitely ask about that. Otherwise I believe they have a 15% off sale twice a year. I received my chair about a week and a half after I ordered it. It is really a cool experience. They ship you a huge box, but you just need to open one side and then roll the chair out (it comes completely assembled)! I am happy with my purchase and I would recommend it to others. read more

Please READ before purchasing anything from DWR. This is my second purchasing experience with DWR. It was so bad that I started questioning myself. I've been working with DWR customer service for the past 2 months+ and there has been absolutely no progress. The issue was quite simple - I ordered a standing desk from DWR, and the item was delayed indefinitely due to the desk being damaged during shipping. I waited another month for them to ship the new desk but only to be told the desk was damaged again by the delivery company. I understand this is not normal time but I've waited long enough and I want everyone to know what to expect when things don't go according to plan. read more

During a delivery in Dec of 2023 the trucking/delivery company lost control of their truck and if not for running backwards into a large fir tree would have run into our truck and then house. Only dumb luck prevented someone being hurt or worse. RXO, the delivery company, and DWR the merchant have continually failed to make good on their continuous promises to just pay for the damage. Promises by "Jake" to send an image of the coming check and assurances by Jeffery House have been untrue. We are out thousands of dollars and it has been more than 120 days of false promises and inaction. read more

Read the negative reviews before purchasing from DWR. I purchased a dining room table and chairs from DWR in March (2022). I was told they would be delivered in 2 (minimum) or 3 (maximum) months. It's now 5 months and I may (still not sure) have the table in another 2-4 weeks and I have no idea when/if the chairs will arrive if ever. The only communication I've received since purchasing was months after purchasing asking me if I wanted to "separate" the dinning room table shipment from the chairs shipment. It's now become a bit of a side job of mine to call DWR, check the website, and ask how to "unblock" the shipments. Clearly I need to find another side job because I still don't have the table or chairs. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I bought a new and expensive Herman Miller Aeron stool from DWR, a high-end design store. The purchase went fine, although I had trouble tracking the purchase because I kept having to talk to different people. Now I need assistance with the chair. I called them today and no one answered until almost an hour after they were supposed to open. When I got someone on the phone, I asked a question about my chair and the guy flatly told me he couldn't help and I would have to call Herman Miller. DWR is "within reach" - if you have a really long arm. Or if you're willing to make monthly installment payments ;) I give it a high rating anyway because I love it all the same, and if I had more money, I'd definitely want to blow it on more sweet furniture from this store. I did manage to scrape together enough to buy some cool minimal shelves (photo in the photos section) and found that they had great customer service. I explained my tight financial situation, and they found a way to get the product discounted. :) They do occasionally have sales too. It's fun to stop in there just to wander around and check it out even if you can't afford anything in it. read more

Very nice place with above average furniture with mega high prices unless you catch them on sale. I was here shopping for Herman Miller chairs and Lilly was helpful! She showed me how each chair works and gave me a good amount of fabric samples. Customer service is top notch! I like how design within reach can order custom fabrics (within their inventory). They have more selection than the ones at the Herman Miller website. Again, watch out for their sale. They also have a movers' sale if you know what that is, just ask them about it. read more

This was my online shopping experience although I know the Seattle store in person. Since January I've been waiting for my product. First time DWR didn't process the order, so 1 month later with no product, I contacted DWR and found out that. Then I had to wait 1 more month for the product that never came. The delivery date was updated around 3-4 times and here I am almost June and nothing. I got a tracking number that doesn't work and only says the label has been created a week ago. Then I contacted DWR again and guess what? Wrong tracking number. I was supposedly getting the product today (Thursday) but the date changed to Monday. What a joke. They gave me 15% discount as an apology. But that's nothing for hassle and unfortunately DWR is the only store that sells that product. Otherwise, I would have chosen another company even if I had to pay more for that. So no! I would not recommend DWR at all to anybody. And I am glad that Amazon exists to raise the bar of providing good service and hope soon you guys feel you need to do serious improvements about that. --- A quick update that someone returned back to me with an apology and another discount for the bad experience. This store used to be better when it first opened. This is a showroom with nothing you can bring it home right away, so I often come here to gather ideas or check out a piece that I can't decide on their website. Staffs used to greet any customers with passions and smile, asked what's in my mind, provided ideas and suggestions helping me to make decision. However, the last couple times I spent in the showroom were quite disappointed. I am completely ignored and can't even find someone available to answer my questions. I ordered a sleeper sofa 5/1, was told it would be delivered in 2-3 weeks, because it was in stock ( I even flexed on the style to receive the item faster) 5/21 came and went and there was still no sofa, apparently DWR had changed their delivery company, they still couldn't give me a, maybe another 2 weeks? MAYBE- not my issue. I needed to cancel the order seeing as I had guests coming. The sales rep and I were communicating and he said he would process the return. The next time I asked about my refund, he sent me a photo image of the :"return authorization" dated 5/31 - yes, 10 days later. He said "sometimes" the refund can take UP TO 2 weeks to arrive. Today is 6/12 - when I reached out yesterday to ask him to check, he said he asked and it's been processed and he's done all that he can. Such bullshit. DWR used to have such a good reputation and I've spoken to several friends during this debacle who concur that the service has gone downhill, and they funny enough, also had major issues with orders and receiving - so at least they are consistent? I won't be shopping here again. Ridiculous that 6 weeks later I still don't have a refund or a couch. If the refund doesn't hit my account by the two week mark, I'll be filing a complaint with the better business bureau. I'm a business owner, and process returns all the time, there is no excuse for this. read more

I have seriously mixed feelings here. I have shopped DWR stores before in person and online and have experienced great service (purchasing a Nelson bench, Aeron chair and a Saarinen chair). Today felt different. Over the past few years I've ended up with a few pieces of Eames imitation design and have decided it's time to start replacing them with authentic pieces. I did a lot of research at the DWR and Herman Miller sites and decided to head to the store to look at them in person and put in my first order. Upon arriving at the Seattle store we were completely ignored. There were several salespeople helping other customers and a few that were minding the displays. We toured the store, saw the pieces we wanted to look at, discussed there merits and made the decision to purchase. I attempted to flag down a couple of people, one of whom stared at her laptop and didn't make eye contact when I said "Hi", the other employee I tried to flag down literally made eye contact and started walking away from me. So, will they end up getting my business? Yes, because DWR is owned by Herman Miller and is their default for consumer purchases, and I would like to replace my replicas with authentic originals (4x Eames DSW, 2x Eames LCW and an Eames lounge). Will I be recommending this specific store to anyone in the future: no. If I show up in a store to buy ~$10,000 or $20 worth of furniture I think I should at a minimum be greeted by the employees or offered assistance. To be ignored because we may not have matched the other very stylish customers in the store or whatever reason the employees of DWR Seattle chose to not help is frankly not acceptable. read more

Furniture stores frustrate me. I have an eclectic sense of taste and great stores like DWR have me thinking, "ohh... I love that piece! Wait.. look at that one! I need that. Or wait, I need this! My 500th review! Perfect milestone for one of my favorite stores... yes, there are a ton of people complaining about "within whose reach?" when talking about DWR, but if you're in the market for authentic mid-century modern and want good customer service, this is one of the more solid furniture chains that I've dealt with over the years. Even when window shopping, I've gotten very good service at all their locations from complimentary water, print-outs, catalog sign ups, etc. They don't follow you around when you browse. Once we had narrowed down what we wanted, the salesperson was kind enough to suggest that we wait for the 15% off sale before ordering... how great is that?! Post-purchase assistance is great, with a prompt reply after customer serice had to liaise with another department about an installation question. Designs = 5 stars Quality = 4 to 5 stars Service = 4 stars Shipping = 0 stars!!!! Yes, the shipping is what kills it for me here... I'll suck it up if it's a DWR exclusive, but I'll buy elsewhere otherwise. On my latest purchase (huge puffy heart!), I had the pleasure of paying another $300 to ship it to an address in WA, or $500 to my doorstep in Vancouver, Canada. Ouch! With many other high end furniture stores, most have covered the delivery costs for me given that I'm dropping minimum 4 figures and often 5 figures there... DWR occasionally does the complimentary white glove delivery upgrade, but you're still stuck paying for the basic standard shipping fee. I find it bizarre that nothing is actually ever "in stock" for purchase at the store, so even if you go in person, you're stuck with the astronomical delivery fee added on :( If DWR's management ever reads this, you would totally become a 5 star for me (and also get more business!) if your shipping policy gets revised! read more

Hey mom, look, only $1,000 for an Eames chair that's been reduced to a pile of designer kindling by God knows who or what! Such a bargain! Like that. So. I've shopped DWR/DOOR in SF, shopped DWR/DOOR in Seattle. All locations peddle beautiful, classic stuff at the highest possible prices and lots of ephemeral poop at the same highest possible prices. DWR is a vehicle. A vehicle that I will never drive b/c it's way way overpriced. It is a means to an end - I love their design and it's a great place to scope out what you want and then go buy it somewhere else that's more affordable. West Elm, Dania and even IKEA rip off their designs, but that's not such a bad thing. You can almost always find a DWR knock-off at one of these stores. Yes, it is of lesser quality, but as long as you don't do your entire house in knock-offs, you'll be fine. And less poor. The funny thing is, there are probably much more expensive stores than DWR, but I don't even want to know about them. read more

DWR makes my designer lovin' heart sing! I've always browsed their online store. I had never set foot in their 1st Ave store and I'm not really sure why. Well friends today was different. My Mr. had never experienced the wonders that are DWR and he, above all people, should be aware of what is one of the best furniture stores in the city. As we entered the store, we were kindly greeted by Travis. He was extremely helpful and nice without being overbearing. He was there when we needed an explanation and wasn't when we didn't. I drooled over the pale blue leather couch, the gorgeous plastic chandelier that came in white, red, chrome, clear, AND gold, and, of course, I could not get over their tables and chairs. Loads of awesome stuff laid out in a space that's much larger than I originally thought. I will not be a stranger to DWR any longer! And someday, when the KTrain wins the lottery or gets a big cash settlement after she loses her right pinkie after being hit by a Smart car in a crosswalk, rest assured that she will be livin' the high life, via DWR. read more

Due to the pandemic and working from home, I was looking into purchasing the Herman Miller Aeron chair. It's an expensive purchase and I was hoping for more information so I reached out to the general manager and made an appointment. When I called him at the scheduled time, he directed me instead to an associate at the store. It felt like a brush off but okay. The associate then tells me he is too busy. Well, I did schedule an appointment ahead of time with the general manager did I not? Now, I am told they are too busy. He promises to call me back but then never did. This is suppose to be a high end furniture store but the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I took my business elsewhere. read more

DWR is a chain that has two locations in the Seattle area. What you have is great selection, stock, and shorter lead times then some other stores. I purchased a bed and some tables, which took half the time of some other places. Sure it's pricey, but they also seem to have quite a few sales. The sales are staggered, e.g. it might be lighting this week and seating next month, but they are pretty flexible and easy to work with. They have a bunch of items that other stores carry, such as Hermann Miller, Eames, Bensen, Bludot, etc., but plenty of other items for which they are the exclusive distributor, so definitely worth a visit! read more

Of course,,,,I research for cheaper deals and order it online from someone else because I'm not rich. More like broke. But if I were rich I won't mind paying what it's worth for a design. I highly value good designs. I have been to three of their events, and two were empty and one was packed. The packed one was on green design. One of the empty ones I went tonight was on K3 from Kithaus. I had my eyes on them for year and a half now since my teacher introduced the company to me for my research on my senior project. My heart was crushed because they've already done what I wanted to do. I was ten years behind. So I wasn't going to miss this chance to see the designer who broke my heart but also so super excites me. It was truly a pleasure to shake hands with Tom Sandonato the designer and Dow O'Neal the sales manager and exchange cards. They are nice people. To me decorating is my art where my taste is a lil classic modern mixed with some swedish influence sprinkled with some swag This is my absolute favorite furniture place in town. Its kind of boutique yet very tasteful carrying a lot of upcoming and classic modern pieces. Primarily Herman Miller. Though it is kind of pricey, occasionally there non classic pieces go on sale and the classics could be 10-15% off with free shipping. I am not rich but I will save for months, perhaps years to purchase a piece. Keep in mind you will be keeping these pieces forever. I recommend checking out their website first before coming here so you know what you are getting yourself into. Also, don't expect taking anything home right away long lead times. Customer Service is superb. To sum it up this place is like the Barneys of Furniture. read more

I totally agree with Katie F about the shipping. The other day I was looking for some placemats that I wanted, well, yesterday... and I saw a set that I loved so, even though it was a bit more than I wanted to pay, I decided to just suck it up and buy them. I walk out with four new placemats, and everyone is happy. Well, sort of. Apparently, since they are a "showroom" and not really a "store" they can't sell me the four placemats they have on display. They have to order them for me. Well, okay. I'll wait a couple days for my placemats. Then I find out they are going to charge me $9 for shipping. And it will take a week for them to arrive. ARG, if I wanted to wait a week and pay for shipping, I would buy the placemats online! But, customer service sold me - they let me borrow a placemat free of charge for a week while I waited for the full set to come in, and even with shipping the price for the placemats was only a bit more than available elsewhere. The sales lady was very friendly and knowledgable gave me some suggestions for new finishes to try on my next woodshop project. It's pretty cool that they have interior design/industrial design students and graduates working here, who actually know their stuff. I feel like I can trust the recommendations made more here than at many other design stores I've been to - but the extra shipping charges kill me. I will definitely be waiting for their floor model sales if and when I make furniture purchases from here - they have a pretty good discount then, AND no shipping. I was walking back to my car from The Market when this little store caught my eye. I retraced my steps back to the front door and decided to see what it was all about. Though it was pretty clear I was just ogling, the salespeople were super friendly and even offered me some bottled water while I looked around. The furniture is a mix of modern and mid-century modern and the designs are fairly impressive. As others have noted the prices are a little steep, but I don't think they exceed the quality. This little store will definitely be in the back of my mind when considering future furniture purchases. read more

First thing's first: DWR represents the best of the best when it comes to modern and mid-century modern furniture. The classic inventory cannot be beat. All furniture is high quality materials, the perfect balance between form and function, and absolutely authentic. The staff is always really great: helpful, knowledgeable and professional. We love working with them and they are great at following up when sales happen. DWR is great for browsing, dreaming, and, feeling inspired. We love going here just to look around. I'd like to say first that while this is a forum for personal opinions, we can't deny that most people come to Yelp! to find out information on businesses not just to read how people think it's overpriced. That said, I can't say enough positive things about DWR and this studio. They carry a huge selection of quintessential modern design by some of the worlds most well known designers. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They are not pushy or irritating and tend to provide a great experience regardless of whether you're actually buying or not. Even better is the fact that the studios often present lectures and events that are interesting and fun for both Modern Design enthusiasts as well as those who may not know that much on the subject. Like I said I think the most important thing to note on here is the this studio has a large selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff, relatively easy parking, and as a bonus, regular events open to the public. read more

This is a great furniture store. The classics are here - Eames and Saarinen and Mies van der Rohe - and a lot of gorgeous work from designers you may not know. It is a brilliantly curated collection, and the staff has a deep passion for furniture and design. I don't know if DWR has really put "design within reach," that dam Barcelona chair is still five grand! But - the staff is incredibly enthusiastic and helpful AND knowledgeable - they really love their products, and chances are, you do, too. Oh, and the customer service after the sale is awesome, too. I bought a lamp that stopped working a few months after delivery, and they made it so easy to swap out. read more

As an architect, I have been specifying DWR furniture for the past 15 years. Recently, I ordered a few pieces for my own home. I am usually the type of person to order items online - However, it is definitely worth it to go into the store and order from Gary. I had questions on wall security (twin 3-year-olds) and he knew right off the bat that how each item was secured. I was also concerned with being able to order some of the chairs in the future and he was familiar with the history of the manufacturer. We also had slight issue with a table we ordered and the customer service was fantastic. I have always loved the quality and design of the product. And I found the service, from ordering to delivering, exceeded expectations. read more

Meh. They carry design staples and charge a fair price for them. I guess I never really felt the connection to the furniture here. Some things like the Saarinen table and collection of Fritz Hansen chairs are good, but those are always at full price. If you're decorating an excessively modern place then maybe this is a good place to shop. Otherwise there are many more interesting furniture stores around town. read more

Unfortunately their designs aren't within reach of my wallet - I'm at the IKEA end of the scale.
