We just got our fabulously beautiful couch from Modern Design Sofas! We really appreciated working with Anthony, who was straightforward and attentive, but also gave us our space and was not pushy; there was no upselling. In fact, we were toying with purchasing and bringing in our own fabric that we had fallen in love with (MDS didn't carry this one), and he was quite willing to work with us on this. However, he also gently suggested we could save a lot by picking one of the fabrics there of which there was quite a big selection. We did, and we absolutely love it, and it saved us several hundred dollars. Modern Design Sofas is a great place to shop for furniture and I'm a repeat customer. I have purchased 4 pieces from them, including a customized leather sofa and matching ottoman. They were beautiful and well-made. It was important to me to purchase a piece that was made in America, with sustainably forested wood. The end result was that I got my sofa in two months while others I know who purchased from chain stores were waiting 4-6 months for their sofas to come off of container ships. We purchased the Taylor sectional in felt gray a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. The quality is high and also very comfortable. We have taken multiple naps on it already. It also has removable, washable cushion covers! Joel and Anthony, the two sales associates, were also so helpful and patient during the buying process. There were way too many items I wanted to buy in this store! Sometimes I'll browse through Pioneer Square and find myself lost (in a good way) among all of the amazing furniture stores. As I'm soon embarking on buying a condo, its great to pop in and look and what's for sale. Rugs, lamps, sofas, bed frames, and even accessories. I hadn't been to MDS before and the gal working there when I went in was incredible kind. She wasn't pushy, she didn't follow me around, but as I was leaving she kindly flagged me down and handed me her card and thanked me for visiting. Just that I felt he was a bit arrogant and brash and incessantly trying to add value to merchandise that I'd already found impressive. We have had our sectional for just under a year and could not be happier with it. Their couches are stylish, good quality, and very reasonably priced. The cushions on our past couches always lost their shape/firmness while our current cushions have kept their firmness well. We have the section style with the buttons on the whole couch, and had a couple minor button issues on the sitting cushions. I greatly appreciated their awesome customer service for right away offering to fix the buttons for us complimentary. Modern Design Sofas is top on my list of places to recommend to friends. I am a big fan of this company. I am a professional Interior Designer, specializing in very high end residential design. For my own home, I have a much more modest budget but the same high-end taste. I have purchased a sectional and loveseat from MDS for my family room and am in the process of ordering two more sofas for my living room. I was able to customize pieces extensively: shorten arm heights, shorten overall lengths, remove buttons and welts, supply my own fabric, etc. The price for the quality is outstanding. You will pay less than at any other major vendor (I don't think I'm allowed to name names?!) and you have options that the others never give. Delivery was very fast. We had a strange situation where one of the seams came undone on one of the cushions within a month of delivery and a few days before hosting Thanksgiving. Obviously, that shouldn't happen, but being in the business, I know that stuff happens all the time. The difference is how problems are handled: Anthony had it repaired and returned within 48 hours. I can't imagine having that level of service with a large chain. Highly recommend. read more

Once I started dealing directly with the store owner, Anthony, my experience in this store was unsurpassed. He was workable when it came to buying the sofa and he came through in a major way when the delivery date was misquoted and ended up 3 weeks later than planned. For this he offered a free delivery and scotch guard for the piece. The sofa arrived in perfect condition, just as I ordered it, with no change to my fabric color or type. The start of the design process was great and loved the entire experience. I purchased a custom designed sofa and got exactly what I ordered from a design perspective. Unfortunately, the customer service after was less the comforting considering the $5k I spent on the couch. Just after deliver (12/1/09), i noticed it wasn't quite according to the invoice and to date (2/2/10) still don't have the issue resolved. Not exactly sure what happened, but I eventually had to step in and work with the builder directly since the store owner felt he had done all he could do. read more

The delivery company did a great job with scheduling and promptly arrived in the 2 hour window they gave us. Everything was correct and we love our new couch. The selection is very affordable for made in the USA couchs. We shopped all the major department and furniture stores and they were the best as far as price, quality, and variety of options. I ordered one that was built in LA and the design, fabrics and build are exactly what I wanted. The sectional arrived 2 weeks early and was delivered right on time. We've had our sectional from Modern Design Sofas for almost 2 years now and we're still really happy with it! We wanted something really quality but had a smaller budget (1-1.5k) and were pleasantly surprised that we were able to accomplish both there. We visited a couple times before pulling the trigger and the person who assisted us was really patient and helped us find the right mix of style/color/fabric to fit our home and stand up to our pets :) Really nice selection and great value based on price/reviews for other couches we looked at from Crate and Barrel (a little more expensive with average reviews) and Pottery Barn (great reviews but way more expensive). The quality was also better than we found at the Macy's furniture gallery for couches in that price range. I don't remember the exact timeline but it was ready early. We opted to pick up to save on delivery and the guys at the warehouse we great as well! Would definitely buy another from them! read more

We recently bought a leather sofa from Modern Design Sofas. When the sofa was arrived we had concerns about indentations and marks left by packing materials and did not accept delivery. Anthony was agreeable about that, but asked us to come to the store the next day to see how it looked "after a day of breathing." The sofa had recovered by then, we paid the balance, and Anthony delivered it within an hour, himself! He handled the entire thing very well and I would not hesitate to recommend his shop. decent selection of sofas and chairs but customer service was poor. the one lady was busy but the other guy didn't seem at all interested in assisting until i walked upto the desk and asked for help. he seemed to get mildly interested in helping once he realized that i was actually there to buy furniture? there was a Huppe dining table i almost bought that day (either the floor model or order) but the guy broke something while showing me the extension - causing the extended piece not to align... when i asked about ordering it new he said it could take upto 12 weeks. when i contacted the manufacturer the estimated delivery time was 6 weeks. still want the table so looking for another store to order it. read more

I visited the store specifically for the various mid-century modern chairs and other furnishings they offer. To begin with, I arrived at 11 am on a Thursday and had to wait almost ten minutes until the employee showed up to open the store, and by that time two of us were standing around debating whether we should give up. The quality of the Wegner Shell chair reproduction ($950) was in my view quite poor, with rough edges and evidence of delamination beginning on the showroom example. One might expect this if it were the least expensive reproduction offered, but the price was almost twice as much as other reproductions one can find online. The selection of finishes for both the shell chair and the Eames plywood chair I was shopping for was limited only to one veneer, not the three to five choices offered by many retailers. All in all I was quite disappointed in the quality of their offerings and in their service. read more
