Used to be the best lumberyard around. I've spent $20,000 there in the last few years and have an account there. I went to the Bellevue store to buy a few hundred dollars of 2x10's after noting their Web price beat Home Depot. They usually knock off 5 to 10% on my account, but he said he took off a few cents. After I paid I looked at my receipt and they were 1/3 more than the advertised price. I asked and got some BS about they had run out of the cheaper ones. I asked for a refund and got a receipt and left. Oddly, he followed me to my car, even though I bought nothing. Later I looked at the receipt, and it was for the charge - not for the credit. Wow - blatant false advertising and then fraud. I turned in a credit card dispute and will never shop here again. read more

After reading other reviews I felt obligated to post. I actually send a note privately to the President (and got a response within a few hours), just to share the great service I had. I've been shopping at the Shoreline location for my bigger home project needs for years and have had nothing but good experiences. The sales people were incredibly knowledgeable, shared a few options on lumber, quickly gave me the options on the decking and even instantly knew which screws would be a color match. I ordered doors from Dunn Lumber. They have come in and yet they dont have anyone to deliver the doors for 10 days. That was not told to me when I ordered. They need to hire more workers and not give me excuses for a long deliver time. Surprising a customer with stuff like that is not acceptable. read more

I was recommended Dunn Lumber as a place to get a sheet of plywood cut. I called on a Friday evening and asked about the process. I was transparent and said I didn't purchase the wood from them. The person on the end wasn't too sure and transferred me over to someone else. I repeated that I purchased the wood elsewhere and after answering that I needed the plywood cut into two pieces, the guy on the other end said it was "no big deal, and no costs would be associated." Great! I came in Saturday morning and had three associates end up "helping" me. I mentioned the phone call the day before and repeated again that I didn't purchase the wood at the store, but would pay if there was a small fee. And I needed to purchase additional supplies. I was told they would not be able to help me since I didn't purchase the wood from them. I left disappointed. Annoyed. Confused. Frustrated. After essentially being told one thing the day before and then the opposite the day after was extremely inconvenient. If it's the policy, fine. Maybe ensure all the workers know so that so conflicting info isn't out there. read more

Wendy Prather was the salesperson who designed and sold us our kitchen cabinets. She was very helpful and patient as we took a long time to decide what to buy. There was a very slight problem with one cabinet door and she immediately said she would get a replacement for us even though we bought the cabinets at least 18 months ago. She is very friendly and a delight to interact with. I particularly appreciate the quality of her service and the cabinets now as we purchased a cheaper set of cabinets from different supplier for an ADU and had a vastly different experience. The guy behind the desk seemed to want me to ask for a product like it was a coffee drink I order every day of the week. Was he giving me a hard time because I had to think about what CVG was? I visited Dunn Lumber and spoke with a window specialist named Eric about making a small, insulated window for my bathroom. I told him my project was in the planning stage for later in the Summer, but he still cheerfully volunteered to give me a Milgard brochure and responded quickly to later email requests for further information. He optimistically said he hoped to hear from me when I got closer to starting my project and would look forward to working with me. This is were the pros go. I have worked the construction industry in Seattle for over 15 years. I go to the big Depot stores for some stuff, but I prefer to shop at Dunn. They go out of their way to help you get what you need. They have the selection and the knowledge that a lot of places don't, and their service can't be touched with a 10 foot pole! (I think they also stock 10 foot poles) If you're not a "pro" then this is absolutely the place you want to go. I get that some people will find it 'intimidating' compared to The Depot, but just go in and ask questions. If the first person you run into is busy, try asking another. If you think you might require a bit more personal attention, I would avoid going in the morning when all of the contractors are there to fill their orders. Afternoons can be a lot less hectic. Give these guys and gals a chance, and you will see why those of us in the business give them our business. read more

But I've walked around Home Depot looking for help and not finding it often enough to know that sometimes the price tag is worth it. I wish I could give Dunn Lumber and sales associate Frank Starr more than 5 stars!!! Frank has been so incredibly helpful with our backyard remodel and has gone above and beyond to accommodate our requests and make sure we get what we need on time. He explained all of our options in detail, gave us samples of decking to take home, gave us detailed cost estimates and was patient with no pressure when it took us longer than expected to order. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic Dunn has remained open and offered their $40 delivery, which also is super fast for in stock lumber/decking - it only took 2 days to arrive!! Not to mention Nellie, who was driving the delivery truck - she was so nice, arrived right on time and took extra precautions to make sure our large decking delivery did not damage our lawn. I have been so impressed with Dunn Lumber in general, but especially during this trying time of the pandemic when it's easy to fall apart or lose sight of customer service. Time after time it's disappointment. Expertise. 6 months ago I went in to buy CVG 4x4 fir post. Described the need. Sent out to the construction lumber yard to get what I knew was the wrong wood. Back inside, sorted out the mix up. Got a 5ft 1" length. Charged for 8' length, luckily caught it just before I signed the keypad and got price corrected. Just now called for quote for roofing material. Almost a third more expensive than another store. Call around. Support smaller stores. Tradies call them Dumm Lumber. Figures. UPDATE: Changing to from 1 to 3 stars. Had to get more lumber this week. Called store, guy was very helpful looking up inventory and sending me to different store with more choices of the wood I needed. Quick and easy, had the stock, in and out without issue. Not cheap but at least I could keep moving with project. read more

I've used Dunn Lumber many times for projects but recently had an issue with custom cut lumber. Rather than give me 12 pieces cut to a length of 46.5" they gave me 7 pieces of 46.5" and 5 pieces of 50". They did the same with smaller pieces as well. I now have to cut them myself. In the future I will check the dimensions of anything I buy before leaving. read more

Essentially sustains business on time and materials contractors who don't need a good deal and homeowners thinking they are smarter than the average bears. A similar business model exists in Washington DC: TW Perry. An urban, high rent lumber yard. Dunn falls short in the customer service arena. The employees are frustrated with the system, and other employees. They aren't frustrated with the consumer. Dunn gets busy and I don't blame them. The circular sales desk makes for more confusion, than if one long big desk at the back was used. Where they really fall short is pricing. I could get better pricing at a lumber yard in the middle of Manhattan. Seattle needs to get over itself. Their delivery charge is awesome and provides a great incentive to use them. They seem to be everywhere, which is good. Their return policies are very good. They could do much better though, and with proper management, pricing and better inventory, they'd be legendary. read more

Dunn Lumber used to be where I'd go for expert advice from someone who REALLY knew what they were talking about. I went to Dunn to buy wood and stain products to make a shelf. When I asked for help with stain and started asking for advice, the fellow helping me started reading the directions on the stain cans. In the end, I walked out with the wrong wood and the wrong stain. I then brought the issue to the attention of Dunn management, which bent over backwards to learn from the experience, make it right, and look for ways to improve. Sadly, I think it's more important than before to insist on a knowledgeable salesperson - and Dunn has them. But at least the store responds in a positive manner when something goes awry. read more

A good olde fashion lumber yard...kinda. Instead of "you pick it" just wait in line forever at a desk then tell them what you want. They collect it and you take it home. Though they have a good selection out front that you can grab. They have all the nice woods you could want. I got walnut and red oak. Good wood! You can spend an hour at Home Depot digging through piles of warped, knotty, damp 2x4s to get a couple straight ones, or you can just go to Dunn and be done. I love Dunn Lumber. It's not the cheapest or the biggest, but their sales people actually know their stuff. Even for metal ducting sections for a furnace...the big-box stores are cheaper but the ducting is as thin and flimsy as you can make it, while Dunn carries thicker and much sturdier ducting. They carry higher-end tools for trade workers or serious do-it-yourself'ers, at very reasonable prices, and they back up what they sell. They have a large selection of lumber, and can cut almost anything you need. We have a 100+ year-old house, so I'm down there a lot and always appreciate the great service. read more

This is the best lumber store in Seattle. There are smaller speciality lumber places, like Crosscut, that do a good job but when it comes to a well stocked lumber store with the full range of lumber/hardware products you can't beat Dunn. It's always easy, and fast, to get in and out and their people are second to none when it comes to customer service. Yes, the big box stores may be cheaper but the quality of their product doesn't match Dunn and customer service is almost non existent. Places like Dunn deserve to stay around because if they ever go we'll be stuck with self checkout stores run by Amazon. read more

Today I need a few more shelves for a built in cabinet we have and they even cut the sheet of plywood down to size for me! I wanted to purchase new Kitchen Cabinets for a remodel. I did extensive research and decided on Canyon Creek . . for the quality and because the factory was in Washington. The closest retailer to my home was Dunn Lumber on Latona (Seattle). I honestly can't remember ever receiving better customer service. I worked with Eric, who seemed to understand every possible option in the Canyon Creek Catalogue. He patiently helped me at LEAST 4 times in person, a couple of times on the phone and then one visit to my house to measure. Eric is incredibly helpful, supportive of my ideas, and determined to get every detail right. The two other employees working at the same desk were equally warm and friendly I think if I do only one thing right in my kitchen remodel, it is to have gone to Dunn Lumber for cabinets and advise on my project! The added benefit was the price was very similar to Lowes. We were pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive the cabinets were for the top notch quality (plywood boxes, soft close hinges, dove tail drawers, etc). read more

I want to like this place & support it because it's local. However, their systems are entirely antiquated and their prices are way too high. I just went in to get something small (& overpriced) and waited for about 15 minutes at the ONE cash register, where a guy was just trying to buy five things. They had to look up every single item on the computer, And we're still having trouble. They didn't even bother to have someone else come try to check me out, despite several guys back in the service department just hanging out. Run very poorly. I won't be back. read more
