Did ya ever wonder what.. if anything.. happens with all the great old fixtures when a cool old house is slotted for demo? It is sad to see historic places ripped down, but don't worry, some items are stripped out and saved! Here is where a lot of useful vintage house parts now rest. They have a good selection of cool lamps, antique fixtures, doors, windows, cabinets, cool glass, dressers-- you name it. I always get inspired with lots of fun ideas when I come here. We went in this time looking for a 'pocket' door, the old kind that slides into the wall.. We were really having a hard time finding one online. Not only did we find one here, they have a whole section labeled "pocket doors" and we found just what we wanted- a 'real wood' door (not the plastic-wood-material-door-thing they sell at Lowes nowadays.) So now we have a door that needs a lil cleaning but was only $35 bucks. The wood alone is likely worth that. They work hard saving the vintage items from otherwise demolition death and seem to price it affordable enough so it can be 'loved' again. Pros: -Organized bins and labeled piles. -Helpful and knowledgeable staff. -Free parking. Cons: -It's like a warehouse shop so everything is covered in thick 'antique dust.' (but, it is kinda fun to clean off your own glowing treasure for the cost you pay. ;) Reuse, recycle baby! read more

This place is like a serial killers dungeon. A spectacle of visual bliss and textural ecstasy. So why the average rating? The price. The items found here are literally salvaged from dumps and old houses and who knows what brought in the cat curious musty huge warehouse. Everything from old varieties of doors, every type of hinge, doorhandle, or escutcheon (look that one up!), tons of window frames, stained glass and otherwise, random as hell side paneling and floor panels and beams, pots and kitschy outdoor random things. Knick knacks a plenty. Hallways of random cabinets, tables, and wardrobes.. seriously this store has a ton of stuff. But these things cost a lotttt. If you're looking for the super perfect one of a kind door, this place might have what you are looking for.. sure, then it's worth the price. But if you're browsing for a maybe I'll start a project then this place might not be the best option. It's probably more geared towards homeowners who have legitimate things to fix up. Not really for the hobbyist in my opinion. I think of the prices as a kind of "look at our trendy store in SoDo we're gonna jack up the prices" sure, employees need to be paid and these guys work hard and are totally super friendly, but you could find these exact items in a handful of other places for much less or more likely even free. The convenience of everything tossed into semi-neat arrangements in a huge warehouse is what this place has going for it. Long ramble. I came here today after getting my pool water tested by neighbor Aqua Quip. I need to build a chicken coop and was looking for ideas and inspiration among the treasures of Earthwise's recycled stuff. Maybe some repurposed wood, a door, some windows, and a big 'ol bathtub of dirt would make for happy backyard chickens. I went in to look at kitchen cabinets. They had the perfect match for mine I have at home. I asked if they could sell the pieces individually but the lady I spoke to said the manager would be in within a couple of days and was the one to make that decision. Strange I thought but it's their policy and I literally only needed a couple of them. Then I found these beautiful 1920s stained glass windows which were hanging like 10 feet up on a wall. I asked if they would give a discount for buying both and the cashier said she'd asked the manager who happens to be the lady who said she couldn't break up the set. They offered a nice price but I asked if I bought them maybe they could break up the cabinet set too and sell me the two pieces of cabinets with the two stained glass windows. The manager looked at me and said "why would I do that". I said ok just figured I'd ask. This would what been like a $1200 to $1500 sale. Determined to spend some money I went back to the stained glass and struggling to get a better look as they were up 10 feet. No one even offered to help or bring them down. I was pretty much the only customer around. Just got a real bad feeling. So I just left. It's a store you think they'd at least help me purchase the stained glass. But after reading these reviews it all makes sense. read more

Earthwise is great! Most everyone is really friendly and their prices are pretty competitive. I would say out of all the reuse stores they have the most unique items on a regular basis. They carry lots of amazing doors, windows, beautiful furniture, mirrors, sinks, you name it! They carry stuff that's a little more unusual compared to other reuse stores that carry pottery barn or the same white newer toilet, chrome faucet, etc. blah. We have built a greenhouse, shed, remodeled our basement and upstairs floor with mostly earthwise items. The store manager is really awesome too! read more

A few years ago I bought a vintage crystal chandelier for my entryway at Earthwise. The price was great especially for the age and excellent condition. After a rewiring and a professional cleaning, it was a gorgeous addition. So when being quarantined in my home for a long period caused me to realize another light fixture had to go, I figured Earthwise was the place! I guess the cost of doing business in Seattle isn't easy because prices were crazy this time. Not one chandelier was less than 3 times what I paid for mine. I'm all for saving beautiful old things from going into the landfills as well as money, but these lighting fixtures need to be updated, or repaired, which is cost that needs to be figured into the entire project. A handblown Italian glass chandelier is lovely, but when it is considerably damaged and impossible to repair, a $600+ price tag doesn't jibe. You have great stuff, but I'll be doing my digging at salvage yards who don't price match imperfect items with ready to install antique mall goods. read more

I went here on a Saturday looking for some wood to possibly make a desk. Parking was free but was limited. The store has materials inside and outside. It took me 30 minutes to quickly look at everything and discovered the prices were really reasonable. They had wood, doors, windows, lamps and lots of things in between. The store is well organized and staff were helpful. I really liked this store and would recommend it to people trying to fix things in their house and need materials or to get some wood to make cool desks, giant jenga and corn hole. read more

First the good: There are some really cool, unique things to be found among the massive selection and the employees are friendly enough to help navigate and suggest ideas but hands-off enough to let you explore comfortably. However: Most materials here are exorbitantly overpriced, even for basic Home Depot/Lowes quality products in junkyard condition. Overall: Come here to find those special finishing touches but be prepared to pay showroom prices. Unfortunately, for most house projects, buying brand-new would be the more economical option. read more

I feel stuck at 4 stars today, most of the businesses I want to review seem to say 'Yay I'm a Fan' when I think of them. In a nutshell: This place is awesome but a bit spendy. That said, you'll find some stuff here that's out of this world (sometimes perhaps literally?) and it's a vintage homeowner's dream. To find replacement parts, decorating ideas, and they're great folks to boot. Still, for me, I'm a thrify gal and the prices aren't high but they're not bargain basement either, other than the sales - tile was 65% off I think so about 10% of the price of new. read more

As a new homeowner, I have come to love stores like Earthwise. I really like Ballard Reuse but decided to check out Earthwise because I saw on Craigslist that they had barn wood available. At these stores, you're basically paying for someone else's junk but your treasure. I don't know how and where these stores get their things and how much they pay for them, but I imagine the markup is quite a bit. We got enough barn wood for a 80" x 36" headboard and it cost about $100. That is expensive for old junkyard wood, in my opinion. I was looking at glass doorknobs and I was surprised by the price. I thought, "Ballard Reuse would never charge that much". I was right -- I went to Ballard Reuse the next day and their glass doorknobs were at least $5 (20%) cheaper. You never know what you'll find here and although Earthwise is on the pricey side, sometimes you find that perfect item you've been looking for for months and will pay anything for it. read more

You know... the tables that used to be this... picture frames made out of that... decorations made from xyz... and now I know where to find all those things. The first time I came here, I was giddy and speechless. I wanted to leave with a door, some yard ornaments, a bathtub, some old windows, and about a ton of repurposed wood. However, I didn't have the space or money for all of that... so I left with an old long drill bit that I stuck in one of my container garden pots. I can't say that the staff was super friendly... they answered my question when I hunted someone down... but it was a hunt. And a waiting game. I'll be back. Again and again. read more

Fantastic spot for finding salvaged odds and ends. You can get antique glass door knobs, doors, shabby shic mantels, old windows.. you name it. They have tons of salvaged tile and even vinyl windows. Lots of architectual pieces of interest. One time I found an old bench swing in perfect condition and a picnic table. Why buy new when you can salvage and restore? read more

I kind of get super high here. There is a euphoric trance that takes over my body from just walking in. Tons of hours have been lost exploring all the crevices and nooks hidden in this trove of salvaged goods. For presents, I like to build stuff. When my gal pal said, I really need a huge wall of hooks to hang all my jewelry, scarves, hats and purses-I took it as "Delilah, help"! And so, I found myself leaving recently with a fantastically thick, vintage door, with several hooks, cabinet knobs and small towel racks. Thank you. I've literally thought about working here, just to be able to be in this space for longer periods of time without seeming like a weirdo. And I take my friends, family and random people that I know for short periods of time here-just to give them the gift that is Earthwise. You should come, find used stuff here and then repurpose it. Earthwise aspires to be the Archie McPhee of home improvement. Lots of little "funny" notes attached to things and ironic displays. Trying a little too hard to be cool. Most of the people who work here know about remodeling and can be very helpful. Some seem like window-dressing. If you can overlook all that (and you should) there's great stuff here, at great prices. Heating vent covers, trim, doorknobs, light fixtures, etc. read more

These guys have a ton of stuff! Like I had posted in my earlier review when they were in their old location, they have a lot of stuff from 30s - late 1800s homes. Which makes me a bit sad to know this stuff is being torn down. Still not a lot of stuff for your mid century modern shoppers. Although I did find an awesome doorbell from 1966 and some drawer pulls with their round backplanes intact. Prices seem to be in line for the large stuff due to their uniqueness. For my drawer pulls, those were $5 for 10 and my doorbell was $25. read more

I purchased some very rusted, vintage super heavy duty woodworking bar clamps 6 months ago from the Seattle store. I called Kurt a few weeks ago to check and see if he had a few more for a large project we were using the 5 clamps we originally purchased on and he knew exactly the item and YES he had 3 more in the Tacoma Store. They shipped them up to the Seattle store for PU at no extra charge. We oiled them up and they are the finest clamps I have used in my 42 years wordworking. I want a house that needs lots of old antique and sorta antique stuff. I mean the kind of place where you know these guys are going to show up there in 20 years and re-salvage all the stuff you bought from them the first time cuz it really was just that awesome. So today I started down that path with just a pair of unassuming light fixtures. I have no idea where that apothecary wall and mirror can go, but I'm pretty sure I need it. I've been here a few times and found some cool stuff. I have a mid-century modern house and they don't have a lot of stuff like that but if you have an art deco or craftsman style house let the good times begin. Need a door or doorknob? How about a period window or toilet? They have tons of stuff like that. Also tile, fireplace parts, sinks, cabinets, light poles, marble, toilets, railings, light fixtures ect. Also a nice selection of oddball antiques. Parking can be tight and a pain to get out of if you have a large vehicle. Some things are priced a bit on the high side but ask if they can do better and sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend but be prepared for more than one trip since there is a lot to take in. read more

I went to Earthwise to look at a specific, unique toilet in an unusual color that is currently listed on their website. I didn't see it, so I naively went to the cashier to ask if it was still available. He was generally unpleasant and dismissive, which really, I'm started to get used to as a middle aged woman trying to get things I need in hardware stores. As I looked up the item number on my phone a man approached him and asked him about lumber. He was more than happy to talk with him. I did notice that a woman who worked there came up and made small talk about another toilet they do have. I think she may have been trying to make up for his lack of salesmanship. He said he couldn't the toilet in the computer. I made one more round of the toilets and ended up finding it, but ultimately I was just put off and didn't want to deal with a purchase after that. We left. My husband who had been standing behind me also noticed how differently I was treated than the customer who asked about lumber. I came home and found a comparable toilet on Ebay that I purchased without being treated like a bothersome nuisance. read more

I have found this place to be hit or miss. Sometimes they have a good selection and sometimes they don't. But I found I have to be really careful about their pricing - sometimes they way overcharge for stuff you can buy new at Home Depot or ikea for a lot less than this store. Specific examples I have seen are slate tiles, kitchen sinks and lumber. read more

I frequent most of the architectural salvage shops in Seattle as it is part of my business and they are primary sources of material for the work I do. While Earthwise has some cool stuff, their prices are by far the highest in Seattle, especially for lumber. The staff is friendly but my visits have tapered off considerably in the last year simply because I can no longer afford to shop there. read more

Walked over to Earthwise today on my lunch break, hoping to look at cool stuff for houses, since we just bought a mid-century home that needs some updating. It was great! The staff were very friendly but not intrusive. I felt perfectly comfortable walking around the store, asking a lot of questions, but not buying anything yet! I especially loved the chandelier and glass section, but there were many, many other possibilities, things I haven't seen anywhere else. Just the lighting fixtures alone will bring me back here---they have an amazing selection of mid-to-early 20th century lamps and fixtures.
