As others have said, this store has what you need. Gorgeous water plants and fountains outside near the back, plus big healthy plants for cheap. Plants are healthy, helpful staff. Not to mention the BEAUTIFUL KITTY who just chills in the outdoor garden pottery section. I'm not sure any other review is necessary, this is one of the most relaxed cats I've ever had the pleasure of respectfully petting. Accepted all scritches, made me feel like a 10/10 cat enthusiast. Not to mention they also had exactly what I needed for my balcony garden, literally basic items I couldn't find at another close unmentioned bigbox store. McLendon staff was friendly as well, I signed up for the reward point system super quick. Would recommend. I really like this store. I live 45 minutes away so only go once a year around May 1st. I load up on vegetable starts, dirt, and compost. This year I bought a small rhododendron and last branch clipper. I made sure to get there right when they open at 8am, because I have been there in the past mid day Saturday and the place is beyond packed. I will go back! That one bolt you need, but the big box stores don't have it? McLendon does. Fan motor for bathroom exhaust fan out, they have a replacement motor. No need to buy a whole new assembly. Locally owned and with a staff that has worked there for years. The guy assigned to electrical will know what you are talking about, the difference between the tapes of breakers, and won't be super judgement all of you don't know what you are doing. Same goes for the lady in plumbing. Chainsaw parts? Weird light bulb? Plumbing fittings? Great hand tools? They have them. This is your Dad's local hardware store and I will shop here first if at all possible even if they are a small fraction more expensive than the big box store. I am not handy at all but every now and then HGTV gets youbso inspired that you get up your lazy couch and run to the store to create something out of nothing. This store will have it and best assure that the staff will be there to help you with professional suggestions and tips. This week is all about my garden. The associate was kind enough to provide me tips on winter gardening and keeping up for spring. Took her time to help me throughout. Very friendly and gives you the neighborhood friendly vibe feel. This is the addiction you get when you own a home. You just don't know how much I've spent here just getting the basics you need for a home; hoses, screw drivers, nails, paint, paint thinner, the list goes on and on. McLendon has a at - home neighborhood feel where it's like spending the money your spending at a local place other than a national chain. I find it has everything I need in just a fraction of the floor space you'd be wondering around at a Home Depot. The service is great and you can tell the employees have been there forever. I love you McLendon's! I grew up frequenting big box hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot. My dad was always working on some home improvement project or fixing one of his cars so I would get dragged in there with him. His assurance that the trip would take 'just a few minutes' was almost always a lie. My sister, mother and I have logged countless hours waiting in the parking lots of these places. Therefore, I have a major aversion hardware/home improvement stores. I recently moved to the border of White Center and accompanied my husband to McLendon's one day. I bet they have almost everything that any of those other places have and you don't have to get lost in a ginormous concrete jungle. And the employees are actually very friendly and know what they're talking about, what a concept! My favorite part of McLendon's is definitely the kitchen section. They have a great selection of pots, pans and gadgets. They also carry lots of supplies for pickling (a hobby I'm hoping to start soon). This past December, I also perused their Christmas section quite a few times. They had lights, decorations, cards and candy, almost every kind of Christmas accessory you could need. Updating review from 8 years ago. Since then McLendon has not changed much - for the better or worse. Customer Service is a little less angry over past couple years. Cashiers at this location nicer now. Store product selection is still about the same - premium-priced mostly apartment grade products. Selection is good, except for lumber which is minimal. Loose nuts and bolt pricing insultingly high. Why go to Home Depot when you can go to local McLendons? That's a good question. Answered by having a much broader selection of truly hardware store items than a major player. read more

it's usually around this time of year when i start to give thought to getting my garden ready for spring and summer that trips to mclendons happen on the regular. this place is addictive and once you go for one thing, you realize their selection in other departments is pretty amazing. the next thing you know, you have a full cart of stuff that you didn't intend to buy but you know you'll use. from paint supplies to plumbing, from the amazing selection of flowers and perennials to the canning supplies i like to stock up on in the throws of summer, mclendon's customer service and selection cannot be beat. i won't go anywhere near the well known orange big box store when i know i can get a great deal and a lot of solid advice from the employees in the blue vests. i consider myself a customer for life! read more

My daughter had two plumbing issues that she needed repaired and being inexperience she called Beacon Plumbing, big mistake. To replace a water Heater almost $3,100 and to fix a cartridge valve in the bathtub handle $1,000. I went to the McLendon's in Renton(the nicest people working with Dean). My daughter got a 50 gallon water heater installed for less than $1,200 and to fix the cartridge valve which will be don e next month it will be less than $300. Please, please consider doing business with McLendon's before you go any where else even Lowe's or Home Depot. Another thing I really love about McLendon's is that you can always find an associate to assist in the store. read more

My husband and I just bought a house and we have been making many trips to Home Depot, to never find exactly what we want. A salesman at Home Depot suggested checking out Mcleandons and we did and loved it! First, the parking lot has large spaces for trucks or SUVs! Second, the store is clean and bright. Third, we found what we needed thanks to the helpful staff. The prices were good and the checkout was fast! My only issue is that I couldn't find a bathroom (I should have asked). So one day long ago I went to Auto Zone to see if they made keys....They don't, so don't bug them about it, but they suggested I try McLendon's. I did so happily because I am aware of the following: McLendon's is staffed with incredibly friendly people who do know what they're talkin' about - whodathunk it? Their prices are pretty average and the selection isn't as diverse as...well, one of the other nearby home improvement stores that I hate with a burning passion...But that means McLendon's can focus more on QUALITY. You know what else? You aren't forced to self-check. Hmph. I have occasionally had issues with the parking lot as it is a bit small and McLendon's can get a bit busy, but the experience is a mere annoyance compared to what you're going to deal with at that OTHER place as a whole. read more

We contacted McLendon/Emerald City Energy in August of 2021 to replace 5 windows. We put a 50% deposit down in early September for the windows and installation. They told us that there was a backlog to get the windows built and that they wouldn't be ready for installation until December. OK. They contacted us in November and said that the windows were ready and we could schedule the installation. Ok, great and earlier than expected. During the install they learned one of the windows was broken and would need to be reordered. These things happen and this is understandable. Here is where their service went south. I received a final invoice and went ahead and paid it because I trusted them. That is a mistake I will not make again. They never called or emailed to schedule the broken window replacement. It was only after multiple phone calls, voice mails and email messages and a Facebook post on their poor customer service that someone reached out to schedule the replacement window installation. 25 minutes before the scheduled install I get an email saying the installer is sick and they would need to reschedule. Ok, people get sick. They rescheduled for the next day with a different installer. Agreed upon time has come and gone. I contacted them and they are looking into it. It is now the middle of January 2022. Approximately 2 months after the original installation. All communications were me reaching out to them to ask them when they are going to be in touch. No proactive communication from them until I posted on Facebook. They sent me this email: "If you have a moment, I would love it if you can update or delete the comment from Facebook. We get a lot of business from social media, and for a local company like ours, our social media affects our ability to reach new customers. I really do appreciate your patience and understanding here, and I will make sure to get you taken care of." They have not taken care of the issue. Based on their communication systems and follow through I would not recommend McLendon/Emerald City Energy for anything and I will not shop their store or use their services again. read more

My dad when I was little would always drag me along to a local hardware store--one of those ones that was family owned and dated back to the 1930s. Every shelf, every aisle, overflowing with useful things, and the aisles sometimes so narrow and arcane that it felt like walking through some weird mysterious place of weird stuff. Then I found Home Depot when I got older and went full retard, as Kirk Lazarus says. Until we bought a house and our realtor told me about McLendon's in White Center, and it was like I was a little kid again. There is pretty much nothing you can't find in here related to hardware and home improvement. Do they have the sheer volume of stuff that a big box warehouse does? Of course not, anymore than a Thriftway or local family grocery will have the same volume of crap as a Costco. But who cares? You keep the money local, and the McLendon's staff is just fantastic. They know their shit, and will guide you to exactly what it is that you need to buy to fix and sort out whatever it is that you're having trouble. Even when you've watched one of them answer three consecutive completely stupid questions, and you come up and ask the fourth stupid question in ten minutes they still have fun, because these guys and ladies love hardware, and plumbing, and all the rest. Bonus: If they don't have a specific thing, they'll order it for you. They have a frightening number of parts books all over the store and can easily order more stuff by raw count than Home Depot carries for you. You may just need to wait. read more

Mclendon's has everything you'll need in hardware, and best of all, most items may be bought singly or by the handful. and not in factory bubble packs! And as other reviewers echo, each of the staff knows what they're talking about. Awhile ago I went in to buy a load of deck support timbers and one of their lumber guys personally searched the stacks to pick out the best pieces for me. I haven't been to the White Center store, I generally go to the Renton store on Rainier Ave., across from Fred Meyer, so the corporate DNA must run strong throughout the whole organization. read more

Mclendon Hardware in White Center saved my life today. I was going to take it myself if I had one more obstacle between me and my dripping faucets. Dripping faucets is no reason to kill yourself, I know, but it was just that one last straw and no other hardware store (all of which I went to first, of course) had the part. Home Depot pretended to and sold me something that didn't work (even though I showed them the parts list). Other stores told me I didn't need the part (my plumber disagreed). I almost kissed the guy at Mclendon's part counter who was so refreshingly not condescending when I asked him to verify I was holding the right faucet part - much to my surprise I was finally in business. I love Mclendon's. I am grateful that the people in the West Seattle Home Depot have proven to be laughably, amazingly incompetent. For it was in the spirit of 'I will not step foot in this store again' that brought me to Mclendon's. People who have shopped here already know why this place is so wonderful. It is a store with actual, real people in it, carrying actual, real products. It is not a big box store full of corporately-decided products that no one knows anything about. The people at this Mclendon's know their stuff. I asked for help in the paint department (a Miller paint was matched perfectly) the electrical department, the gutter department... everyone there that I have talked to or run into - and I mean everyone - seems friendly, knowledgable, and happy to help. Hell, they seem happy to be there. (How often can you say that about a Home Depot or Lowe's employee?) It's a warm and happy place. This store reminds me of the hardware stores I used to go to with my father when I was a kid. You can buy a single screw here. The ailes are narrow, the shelves are full, there are all kinds of products that you never thought you'd find in a hardware store. It is, in short, a human place. I have been completely satisfied with not only my shopping experience there, but with the products I have bought (one employee strongly recommended a wood-cleaning product that is a wonder) And it makes me happy to know that the profits are not going into some corporate kitty. Sorry, McLendon. I know that shopping local is best, but I can't stand this place any more. The prices are uniformly higher for the same product than at Home Depot - a trimmer I looked at there was $99 and was $127 at McLendon, and that's not the only example. A weed puller that I ordered online for $20 was $26 here. And while they claim that they're all about customer service, when I had a plant in my selection that didn't have a price tag on it, the lady just asked me how much it was - when I didn't know, she didn't offer to have anyone look it up so I just told her to forget it. The plants are not very well looked after in any case. The store's aisles are crowded and getting a cart through is tough. No one offers to help you get heavy stuff into your car. I never thought I'd say this but Home Depot's customer service is so much better than McLendon's. The only thing McLendon has to recommend it are the occasional end of season sales. read more

As a new homeowner, I was told to acquire as many gift cards to Lowe's and Home Depot as humanly possible. After visiting both big-box stores, you couldn't pay me to shop at either store. Sales associates are difficult to find when you need one, and they push you to buy their store brands--cheaply made and lacking quality. And what is with people walking down aisles to release flatulence at near high-decibel levels? Oh hell no. At McLendon I'm able to find friendly and knowledgeable sales associates that take the time to answer my questions. I'm not pushed to buy any particular brand, and I'm given solid recommendations if the store doesn't carry a particular item. Best of all, nary a wind breaks in the store aisles. If it does happen, at least people are kind enough to keep it silent. I bought a fireman-grade axe to aid in my battle against English ivy growing in our front yard. I was slightly disturbed that a hardware store sells all sorts of accoutrements that I've seen in damn near every horror movie I've watched since childhood, but as we live nowhere near a corn field and terrifying cult of children I've made peace with my double-tooth saw. read more

My Quickset front door knob/lever failed. I went to McLendon to replace it. Since the knob/lever has a screw going through the door, I needed a close match Me: do you still sell these? McLendon: if we do, they're over there. Me: so, you don't know? (As I was walking over "there") Me: (after not seeing it) space guess I'll go to Home Depot. McLendon: (yelling) it's on the end on the left Me: found it. (It wasn't a match, left store) Found it at Home Depot for $10 less, plus several models to choose from. I'm boycotting McLendon for a while. Second time the key folks were too lazy to help a paying customer. They remained behind the counter and made no effort to help. read more

Knowledgeable staff, average prices, the selection isn't as broad as other stores with a bigger budget, but they are good at keeping what they do sell in stock (unlike a certain orange big-box store). Obviously for the best selection it's best to shop around at all the hardware stores and find what you like. However, shop at Mclendon's for a more personal touch; I think twice as many people work here vice the nat'l chain stores so help is readily available! It's a Mom & Pop kinda shop, with a selection on par with Lowes and HomeDepot. They have a good selection of tools, although budget oriented with good prices and reasonable quality. The selection at this White Center store isn't as good as the larger store on Rainier Blvd. ...And they sale Christmas trees! cons: they close earlier than the competition. read more

McLendon had more than we needed without the plastic and confusion of Home Depot and Lowe's. There were 4 people sick the day I visited, so there was a bit of a wait for some departments, but we still managed to get everything we wanted. The staff apologized profusely for the wait, and still ran the store with efficiency, so kudos! There's such a neighborhood feel about this location too. People were coming in after work and saying hi to the employees, identifying everyone by name. The prices for nuts, bolts, hinges, etc. were fairly competitive, although the non-hardware components (shelving, knick knacks) seemed overpriced. I have never, ever had such fast and friendly service from a hardware store. EVER! This place has all the selection for those that are way into DIY, and those of us, like me, who rely upon the kindness of others for their hardware needs have easily accessable help. My husband and I initially went in here looking for bird feeders. Like a freaking genius, of course we walked right past them. On the bright side, it gave us an opportunity to see the store, and even though they have a ton of stuff, it was nicely organized and clean. When we finally gave up and decided to ask for help, it was easy to find someone who got us the right answer quickly. Even the checkout staff was quick and effecient. We came back a second time, and we experienced the same great service, and the store looked great. They even have a fun assortment of Seahawks stuff. Also, the parking lot is spacious. First of all let me start off with saying that I absolutely love this store! I shop here exclusively for all of my hardware and plant needs. The store itself is fantastic. Now for the reason I gave them only 3 stars. Recently I had a friend visiting and wanted to show her my favorite store, as I generally am very proud of it. Unfortunately this time we encountered a rude and dismissive employee and honestly it ruined the entire experience for me and my friend. When we walked in, through the garden section entrance, a woman was walking by us and I asked her a question as we were looking for some specific hardware. She looked at us, rolled her eyes, and walked over to the desk to answer the phone. Ok I get it she needed to answer the phone, so we patiently waited for her to get off the phone. She continued to stay on the phone while completely ignoring us with her back to us, and we could even overhear her conversation and it sounded like she was complaining about a fellow co-worker. We sat there for about 2-3 minutes while she carried on her conversation and continued to ignore us, so we gave up and walked away. As we walked through the aisles we came across a section that had some Christmas ornaments hung up with caution tape at the end of the aisle. My friend saw an ornament that she really liked and reached to look at it. Just then our favorite employee showed up again, I guess she finally got off the phone, and yelled at us that the products were not for sale yet, hence the reason for the caution tape. Again I understand the item must not have been for sale yet, but she didn't have to be so rude! She could have politely said I'm sorry ladies, those items are not for sale yet. Instead of yelling at us and trying to belittle us with her comment about the caution tape. The woman was probably in her 50's wore pants with embroidery on the back and walked with a slight limp. From now on I might just shop at Fred Meyer, where the employees are polite and helpful. It's unfortunate because every other employee at McLendon is fantastic. I hate to see a bad seed ruin it for everyone. It bugged me so much I just had to say something. read more

But you can't help but be inspired to make plans when you're here. This local store has anything you'd need for a remodel, but also a variety of garden supplies, homesteading equipment, lighting options, and more. When I came here, I was on a mission. I had spent all morning (literally starting at 7:30am) trying to replace a gasket for my kitchen faucet. I had already been to Lowe's *twice* with no success ("we don't sell those things here, is what I was told").
