After visiting often, purchasing cabs and hardscape, and donating useful items, I stopped coming here when staff affect seemed to change from friendly and helpful to brusque and disinterested. Their response to vintage (1942) doors and windows including unique frosted privacy glass was like, "Yeah, we'll throw it out for you," when I know the stuff could be sold. if you're looking for that ONE item and you're willing to go on an adventure to find it, this is a place you should check out. along the way, you may get sidetracked by something else you see but it's all part of the adventure. i find that i like coming here with something in mind i'm looking for but i also allow myself to be inspired by things as i've walked through the aisles. sometimes i walk away with nothing and sometimes i get a brainstorm for some kind of project but it's a fun place to poke around. there are tons of things to repurpose and reimagine and you may be surprised the breadth of things second use has, but that's also part of the fun. it's definitely a used/recycled aesthetic which may not be for everyone but there's literally things here for everyone and anyone. think of second use as a field trip! if you've got an hour and are willing to poke around, you will be entertained and rewarded by the things you can find. read more

What a treasure! I didn't even know this wonderland of salvage was here, despite my being a longtime resident. We were searching for a piece of wood and found so much more. There space to roam and find the perfect thing for your house We found a bunch of reclaimed wood that would make great shelving, light fixtures and other random goods. Ok so I'm just writing this now, I've shopped at second use for years. Lately their prices are getting a bit steep. Like way too steep. Got a nice old interior door earlier this year which had a terrible paint job and affordable price tag of ~$35 Employees are excellent and witty/snappy/fun 10% restocking fee on returns is bunk. OMG! This place is an HGTV watchers dream! I lost myself in the repurposed items. From old doors and windows to fireplace mantels and bathroom fixtures this place will probably have it for you. I first went online looking for shiplap (Planking boards) to put on a feature wall in my home. I was immediately intrigued because the ad said they had some reclaimed blue stained Douglas fir that came from the Pacific Fisherman's Shipyard in Ballard. They were from a dock dating back to the 1930s. When I got there, there was plenty of parking and lots of fun items to look at. I ended up getting my shiplap and can't wait to get it installed. read more

I come here often for building materials. Especially the live edge woods and things I can repurpose like this fire door taken out of some waterfront pier that was over 100 years old - I cleaned it up and made it into a headboard for my bed. They've got lumbers, old tubs, doors, desks, light fixtures, glass doorknobs, tiles, or just a garbage or recycle bin that'll cost you $2.00 instead of $21.99 on Amazon. Before you go giving your money to West Elm or Pottery Barn - maybe check out this place and find something unique for your home and give it a second use. read more

i dropped off some of my moms salon sinks and chairs last Saturday because she is doing a remodel. 4 bellvedere sinks and 4 shampoo salon chairs. The men that load the items onto the carts told me they do not take salon equipment "it wouldn't sell". "they would loose money if they took the salon equipment". they offered to take the equipment to the dump for me. I wasn't sure of the price or what they could sell it for and I'm not gonna bargain with them if they don't take the equipment... if you say you don't take the equipment and you can't sell it then that's-that. I was in a rush that day and I said "thanks for taking it to the dump for me" I look at the website for salon equipment a week later because I was suspicious I got played and was being lied to after I talked to my mom about the situation. turns out these folks will take advantage of people! Overall disappointed with the experience. I'd rate the service as a -5. Bunch of punks. they made at least $200 off of everything ... trolls. Stay on your toes out there! read more

A great place to wander and marvel at the unique and wonderful merchandise. Things you'll not see anywhere else. A huge neon sign from a 1950's roadside diner, 50 year old wood from the Salish Sea that clams burrowed in for years, a variety of school lockers, and industrial equipment perfect for coffee tables for your loft decor. We probably have a slight addiction to this place. We have found so many good deals by paying attention to their website. I highly recommend checking the website and calling to place items on hold (they have a very generous hold policy). Some of their items start off a little pricey but drop to a more reasonable price if nobody purchases them. Some items you can get for a steal though. I do appreciate the fact that they try and test most of their appliances before putting them up for sale. I highly recommend checking this place out. Though my interaction this this store was short they were super helpful. I was sent here to pick up a cabinet that my bf had put on hold. I knew nothing except it was a cabinet and they were able to look it up by his name and paying was easy too. They even helped me load it in my car. I've owned a home and have been in the process of completely gutting it and remodeling it for the past 3 years, all with nearly 100% reclaimed materials. We live 5 minutes away from second use and earthwise so over the years I've been into s.u. probably over 100 times. That being said, it is a rare occurrence that I get a hello or even acknowledged when I say hello. I'm not exactly sure why as I've tried different approaches over the years and tried to make it apparent I'm totally committed to the mission I assume they are committed to as well. I don't like coming here because I often leave with an overall really sad feeling of being treated rudely. Is it the way I look? Something I've said? Many folks I know and I have all asked the same questions when pondering why 90% of the people who work here are unhelpful, rude and seem really irritated.. this goes for even the guy ringing up purchases; simple stuff. Today was another experience of being refused help, purchasing 100's of dollars worth of stuff for our bathroom remodel and not even so much as a thank you or goodbye after purchase. I'm not sure if the management is unhappy and it trickles down but the attitudes are really confusing. I try not to come in here and will go as far as driving to Ballard reuse if earthwise doesn't have what we need. Helping a customer with a question and not being rude or refusing them help goes a long way! I'll keep coming here if I absolutely have to and I hate writing this because I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from buying reclaimed materials. It's an important thing to do! I just wish they didn't treat me (and others I see in the store, as well as friends) as if we were all out to ruin their day... when really, we are just trying to buy stuff they are selling.. whilst having a neutral to positive experience. read more

Recycle Baby! This place is a treasure trove of great reusable houseware items. We used them for their huge selection of old wood windows, for the antique glass we broke during a refinishing project. They had amazing prices even cheaper than the ReStore. I think they may be cheaper because it is so huge and 'no kidding' very tricky to find the place the first time. I bought an extra wood window and painted it as a sign, this place gets the creative juices flowing with their own store flyers for reusable art. Great idea! read more

This is a fun place to wander though, even if you're not in the market for home-building supplies. There's all sorts of unique objects. It takes a while to navigate through the place, in a way, since there's a lot to take in. Also, it's probably worth it to go by often, if you're looking for something specific. Or not. Never know what's going to pop up. Of course, there's the usual old lumber, used sinks, funky light fixtures, and rusty old garden tools masquerading as objects de art. Doors. Windows. The works. The things I like: I am completely addicted to this place. I love restoring and repurposing and this place obviously feeds that itch. The hold policy is generous and makes it easy to place a hold and then get home and measure whatever you have planned to make sure it will work. Also gives you a chance to sleep on it, sketch it out, whatever. Even though their prices seem to be going up really fast, some good deals can still be found and they keep their in-stock inventory on their website, which makes honing in on things with particular dimensions like doors and windows extra easy. Perusing all of the goodies in this place makes a brain go crazy with ideas. Am I the only one who loves the smell of all this old stuff? Plus you get to pat yourself on the back for keeping something out of the landfill when you repurpose it. Second Use has also come in handy a time or two when I needed to find that last important drawer pull, door knob, or hinge to match the existing hardware in an old house. The staff is super friendly and very helpful when it comes to helping you find things or load things into your vehicle. If you've paid for something in advance and come back to pick it up it's no nonsense. The loading zone is super organized with drive up spots right out front. They quickly retrieve the item, help you load, and get you on your way. The things I don't like: The process of 'selling' them materials is super sketchy. I have done it twice now. Each time I brought in a huge box truck full of materials and furniture. The interaction was friendly and enjoyable. They paid me in store credit for 1/3rd the value of one or two items in each truck load. They have this saying about how you'll get 1/3rd the value if you do store credit and 1/4 the value if you cash out. The issue is, then they tell you that most everything you've brought is worthless and that they will take it anyway, but that they'll have to throw it away because it has no resellable value. They have a big dumpster back there, so the story seems plausible. But then they sell it for good money. I brought in roughly 80 items. They paid me for a few. In both cases they sold everything I brought within a week, I watched it all get posted and immediately sell on their website. They shorted me out of about $594 in store credit based on the prices they sold everything for. When I called to say 'what the heck' they said they couldn't see those items on my account so they couldn't do anything about it. You see, they showed that I had only dropped off the few they paid me for and the 75 or so items they told me were trash, well those got entered separately into their system as anonymous free drop offs. Now I know not to bring stuff here. I feel like this is their business policy, because this deception happened to me with two different employees who still work there. I'd rather take stuff to the dump than have another friendly Second Use employee smile and lie to my face and leave me feeling gross and ripped off. read more

I always end up leaving with more than I planned. It's easy to spend hours here 'treasure' hunting. Watch the prices. Some are great and some things it would be worth it to pay the extra for brand new. I live an hour away and it's worth the drive for the variety of materials. Loading/floor staff has always been helpful. They usually have me laughing with jokes and offer to help before I ask. Their loading area is easy to navigate. I love the recycle reuse concept for building materials, especially because these items would usually end up in a land field. Only reason I didn't give five stars, is because the miscommunication between front/back desk employees has resulted in me being scolded more than once. For example, yesterday I needed a long cedar board. I'm carrying it to the checkout in the back of the store, when their customer service desk stops me to say I'm not allowed to carry the board around for safety reasons. Okay, I understand safety first. So I leave the board with her. Now how do I pay at the cashier if I can't take the board? Seeing that there are 3 price tags on the board, I grab one for the cashier, this employee watching me do this. I walk to the cashier and hand him the price sticker. Where he proceeds to tell me that removing stickers isn't allowed. So I explain the situation and I kid you not his response is 'you're wrong. Never do that again'. So now I've gotten into trouble twice while simply wanting to pay for my item. This miscommunication has happened a few times, which leaves me feeling like I've been 'mom' burnt. Pretty sure I did nothing wrong to deserve my scolding this time. Trying to give my money away shouldn't feel this negative. read more

I really like this place, I am a diy'r and I have found useful items to "fix up" and the people working here are always friendly. Ii also bought a old cast iron sink for my cottage kitchen . I bring my teenage sons here to get the idea that they can "create" too. I've bought old moldings, interesting pieces of stuff with which to creat something new. read more

Absolutely impressed with the team from Second Use who came out today for salvaging our kitchen. They were polite and professional...and saved us both time and money and with a kitchen remodel, we need to save all the $$ we can! They took apart and hauled away most of our cabinets, the hardware, some of our Corian counter tops, an oven and gas stove top. We also visited the Seattle store over the weekend and enjoyed checking out all they have to offer. Been shopping here since 1998 when I bought my first home. I like what they stand for, and on occasion I get a good deal. Loads of overpriced things these days, and now the staff are rewiring lights and charging $50./hour for the "refurbished" product. Their hold policy is rigid (24 hours) and if you don't manage to research, and drive to Seattle or Tacoma (or pay for the product by phone) within that time - too bad! They won't extend the hold no matter what. I've spend thousands of dollars there- seems an occasional consideration would be in order. Leaves a bad taste. read more

I am an obsessive DIYer, so for me this place is like being a kid in a candy shop. They have a LARGE selection of salvaged building materials (windows, doors, cabinets, tile, wood flooring) and there's even a section dedicated to just door knobs. Most of the items are reasonably priced and their inventory is always being updated. That said, it can be difficult to find pairs or several matching items if you're looking for things like wood planks, tiles, cabinets, or doors. Also, if you see something you like -buy it. Don't wait because items are limited stock, sell quickly, and may not be there when you return. If you visit their website, you can submit a "Want List" request of items that they have listed. The Want List is similar to a "Wish List" as it just serves as a reminder of things you want to remember but NOT that they're keeping on hold. Call the store to inquire about items that you want to place on HOLD because some things (even though listed just-in) sell before they're able to update their system. The reason I say that only most items are reasonably priced is because a lot of their "vintage" finds are marked REALLY high. My guess is to offset the cost of housing items that take a while to sell. So yeah, you might not get a good deal if you're looking for a vintage lamp or map but you'll be spending half of what you would on new building materials PLUS keeping things out of landfills. Whether you're crafting, rebuilding, or doing minor household projects, this is a great store to wander around and get materials or just inspiration. The only thing I regret when leaving this store is that I don't own a truck. read more

Best way to get here from the north end is on 99 southbound. Otherwise, it can be a little hard to find. Just look for the Habitat for Humanity banners. If you're remodeling on a budget, don't pass up the opportunity to check this place out. It is a household and building materials bonanza! There are new appliances here, new and gently used kitchen, bathroom and other cabinets, lots of odds and ends. The warehouse is fairly clean and organized. This place is a dream for new homeowners. They have a range of items from interior cabinetry to windows to misc. furniture. We were on a mission to find a fireplace mantel and we scored a wood fireplace mantel shelf for $45. A little disappointed because we were looking for a full mantel which they often have. If you can, never buy lumber/go to a hardware store again for major purchases. This place is a) huge and b) totally friendly. I went there with really no clue on what I actually needed and the staff patiently showed me around and even suggested some design changes to better suit my needs. Yes, it's pretty far down the road if you're up North, but it's definitely worth the travel. Just remember: follow the directions on their website and not Google/Yahoo/Mapquest's. They started getting so many doors from salvage that they had to put them in THEIR OWN BUILDING! So if you don't see doors immediately, don't despair, they're right behind the building you initially walk into. They also have large items like bath tubs, appliances, chandeliers, medicine cabinets, etc. In fact, they have their entire inventory searchable and listed on their website so check it out before you go, call them up, and have them hold the item you want! It used to be a place where you could get items that would be recycled and help the environment at a reasonable cost but in the last year ..their prices have tripled if not more for the same item I bought 8 months ago I saw today for three times that amount considering most of their items are donated for free you think they would try to give people a good deal now they're only catering to the rich Elite. There are a lot more choices out there now. Try Ballard reuse .Earthwise. Habitat for Humanity .Goodwill Craigslist I would save my money and Shop elsewhere. Try offer up too. You used to be able to bargain here too now the staff are rude and just say to shop elsewhere. This place acts like a charity but they are no different than thevalue village scandal. read more

I can't say I've ever needed building materials, but I found myself here with my parents one weekend as they were in search of a door. I was mostly interested in seeing the space, as it's in the former Alaskan Copper building & I spent my formative years working for AC. It was kind of fun looking around at all the old stuff; some of it is pretty weird and/or amusing. And if you're in need of a door, definitely check this place out - it's FULL of them. They range in price from around $10 to in the hundreds; my dad was able to find a pretty nice one for $10 that suits his purposes just fine. Some of the other things were pretty pricy, though, so your mileage may vary. I would be remiss not to mention the staff! Even though they spend their days in a freezing-cold warehouse, they were friendly and helpful, which was appreciated since we weren't really sure how everything worked. I have no plans whatsoever to buy building materials or antique doors or toilets (yes, there's an entire section of toilets - a little creepy) but if anyone else does, you should make sure to at least check this place out. read more

I was driving past Second Use's soon-to-be new location on 6th Avenue when I suddenly realized, despite having been there many times, I have never written a review of their current location. I decided I needed to change that pronto. My husband and I are both huge fans of finding new things to do with cool old stuff. (In fact, I recently decided that my new favorite word is "repurposed.") We love that there are places you can go to find things that once upon time would have gone straight to the landfill, but now, thanks to places like Second Use, can now find new life in a new home. As such, we are frequent visitors to a number of salvaged goods stores in Seattle (and Portland, truth be told). Second Use is definitely high among our favorites. We love going down to browse and see what treasures might be found on any given day. As others have pointed out, due to the nature of the business, you are not necessarily going to find in stock that one little perfect thing that you've been looking for. In fact, it is unlikely you will. You WILL find a huge inventory that truly gets the creative juices flowing: "Wouldn't that look great over there?" "With a coat of paint that would be perfect for *** fill-in-the-blank with something that, with a coat of paint, would be perfect for something you need ***. The staff at Second Use are friendly, helpful and truly dedicated to the idea of "repurposing." We have taken a couple of classes there where folks like them show folks like house how to make useful items out of salvaged goods, a couple of nails and a tool or two. We'll be back again.
