We also got the French onion soup which was delicious. The steak room is beautiful and makes the whole experience amazing. The salad was very good and refreshing after are soup, the bread came out warm with butter and was also delicious. I got my steak rare because it is a skirt steak, so I was expecting it to possibly be a little overcooked, but it was cooked to perfection. The steak sauce and fries were also delicious. Rochambeau was our number one choice for a venue for my bridal shower brunch and it was an absolute dream. I've never worked with a more accommodating restaurant and staff. The event manager, Deanna M., took the time to set up a call to go over details and truly cared about the experience. After having to postpone due to a blizzard, the restaurant allowed us to reschedule with no problem at all. Nice outdoor space. For the food: the onion soup is very good. The green salad with chicken was also very good albeit dripping in a lot of oil. They served the escargot without bread which I found surprising as some of the pleasure of eating the escargot is dipping the bread in the sauce. They didn't tell us there was a surcharge for bread and so by the time food came, escargot got cold while waiting for the bread. We did not have a good experience at Rochambeau. When we arrived we were told that they'd sat a party at our reserved table 20 minutes ago. We ended up at a table that was quite literally in the doorway, and had to keep getting up to close the outside door so freezing wind didn't blow directly on us. Our service was incredibly slow- we're pretty sure the waiter kept forgetting about it. Drinks, apps, and dinner took over 3 hours solely because of the slow service. One member found a bug in every single beverage that was given to her. The food was not good enough to make up for the terrible service and environment, and the price was shockingly high. Finally had a chance to try Rochambeau, for Sunday lunch recently. Originally wanted to book a work event here, but they never emailed me back(!). Kind of glad it worked out that way because the lunch experience was so-so. Although the street-level space was cute, it was extremely tight. We were a party of 4, which meant we were seated at one of the small 4-person round tables (better fit for 2 people) surrounding the bar; warning: don't plan on ordering a lot of food. The Rochambeau burger (came with mushrooms and a heap of fries) was cooked to desired doneness, but it was very bland. It came with bacon even though I did not ask for it, nor was charged the $3 extra; however, this could have ended very badly if I did not eat/was allergic to pork... The toast (for the omelet dish) did not come with any spreads. Isn't this a French restaurant? It should be slathered with buttah!! Best item were the crispy [smashed] potatoes - pretty sure I cannot find this tasty version anywhere else. Service needed some improvement. We arrived at 1PM and were only given brunch menus and not lunch menus (slightly different). Our server forgot to put in an order, and was pretty slow with taking our orders and giving us our check. Not sure if I'll return for brunch. Maybe dinner is a different story? I'll have to visit again and update my review. read more

I really wish that Rochambeau was worth the visit. It was the last day of restaurant week before the restaurant had to close due to the Pandemic with COVID-19. The one good thing was we found parking pretty fast since Boston was almost a ghost town after 9pm. The restaurant is very, very pretty, but also extremely loud. We chose to sit upstairs thinking it would be a little quieter, but we could still hear the loudness from downstairs. It wasn't even busy, but our waiter had a large group right next to us so it took him awhile to get our drink order. When he finally came over, I asked for a tasting of a few different red wines. My husband ordered a beer on tap. Since we came here specifically for restaurant week, the menu that was on the table was their regular menu. I asked for the restaurant week menu a few times, and they had to go find one (strange). Our waiter did mention that they were out of a lot of things on the menu and I was pretty upset at this point of the whole experience. I think he didn't want us to order from the menu because it was inexpensive and knew the tip would be small. Anyway, he finally came over with the correct menu. We started with the meatballs, the pate and split the onion soup. For entrees we also split the Cornish hen and for dessert had this chocolate mousse. Now, I know French food pretty well and the Pate was not what I had hoped for. It was hard and tasted awful so we sent that back. The meatballs were pretty good, but the bread that came with it could've been softer. The onion soup and the Cornish hen was probably the best out of everything we ordered. The dessert was ok too! I know they are fairly new, and the restaurant is beautiful, but the service was awful (better towards the end of the evening) and the food was not the best. The brunch menu does look good, so if anything I would come back for that, but not for dinner anytime soon. read more

BiG disappointment. I've had French Onion Soup delivered before, from places that charge half the price, and the soup was always packaged appropriately in a paper/cardboard soup cup, flavorful with the cheese melted/toasted on top ...oh, and with onions. I saw a review that raved about Rochambeau's soup that drew me in to give it a shot. Also, being that it's on Newbury and has a French focus, I thought all this would be done just as proper. So I decided to treat myself and see how the Elite eat. RoRo's here sends it in a flimsy, plastic take-out container with a couple pieces of onion that I had to fish for, a lil' bit o'shredded beef, and a clump of cheese settled at the bottom. First glance, I thought all they sent me was broth with croutons, but as I dumped it into something that I could nuke in the microwave, I found the cheese was sitting at the bottom - it seemed more like they just dumped into the To-Go container what they had already sitting in another bowl. Either way, this was just beef broth with a little bit o'beef, hardly any onions (not enough to add an onion taste), and cheese at the bottom I really had to work into the rest of the soup after reheating... Flavor. Less. I also got the romaine and kale salad... it's $13 for mostly romaine, a few small, pale pieces of kale I had to dig for, a few croutons and grated cheese that seemed like it came from Kraft (silly of me to expect freshly grated parmesan). Romaine is pointless on its own, not worth $13, and this salad seemed to be wilting as I was eating it. Serves me right for trying to order something healthy. Spent way too much money giving this place a try (~$47 after fees & tip via GH), but the creme brulee was good. Lesson Learned: location does not = quality. Next time I'm going back to the local pub. read more

** Read till bottom to hear about my interesting bathroom experience.** Ro-Cham-Bo. I believe that is how you pronounce the name of this restaurant. Cafe by day, brasserie by night. I came at night to experience the brasserie. We sat on the second floor. The decor reminds me of Paris. There is a huge lock hanging from the ceiling, so you will always know what time it is. You can also see the kitchen through the glass which is cool. I saw a wood fire oven, and lots of logs stacked next to it. We ordered tap water but it came in a nice water with the word Rochambeau on it. The bread was delicious, it was wrapped in paper that said "in bread we crust". How creative! The house wine is the cheapest wine on the menu but it comes from a vineyard in France (I think Bordeaux) and is apparently made just for the restaurant. You can get a class, 1/2 carafe, or a full carafe. It was delicious. We started with the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was a good size, and the cocktail sauce was good too. They have daily specials as well, which you can call "plat de jour". One person in my part went for the daily special which was the seafood bouillabaisse cataplana - you do a generous amount of seafood and a huge piece of baguette. I ate some of it- the fish in it was good. I had the lobster cavatelli with a fried egg. The portion size is rather large and is great if you are starving. There was a lot of lobster in the pasta, so I was pleased. It would be even better if the pasta was home made but I know we are not at an Italian restaurant, so it is ok that it was not home made. I had an interesting experience going to the bathroom. There are 3 separate unisex bathrooms on the 2nd floor. Each bathroom has its own sink and toilet. The toilet bowl was black, and the tiles were black too! Ladies, not a good place to touch up on your make up as it is dark. I went to the first bathroom and found someone in there who had forgotten to lock the door. I then went to the second bathroom, opened the door, and found someone inside again! Oh my, do people not know how lock doors? Finally, I went to the third bathroom, knocked the door for a long time, then opened the door very slowly to make sure nobody was inside. Make sure you lock the doors. Maybe it was dark so people forgot to lock the doors. I am sure the people inside the bathrooms were horrified, but I was extremely horrified myself. Despite the bathrooms mishaps, I enjoyed the food here. I recommend coming here for a special occasion, and make sure you make reservations! read more

What a bummer this place is. So much potential but absolutely no execution from both the front and back of the house. I was excited to see what could be another great French restaurant arrive in town, competing against Gaslight and Eastern Standard but after my dinner experience last night... those two have absolutely nothing to worry about. Our first red flag was when we checked in about ten minutes prior to our reservation. The hostess said our table would be ready very shortly and pointed to the lovely bar as a place to hang for a bit. We ordered some drinks and my wife's cocktail was stellar. One of the very few redeeming items of the evening. We waited a bit and about 10 minutes past our reservation, we proceeded to check-in again and they had no idea what was going on and basically told us that the table wasn't ready. We patiently decided to stick it out - a huge mistake. Eventually, the hostess actually did her job and found us near the bar and tried to push a high-top on us in a desperate attempt to get us out of the queue. Hard pass lady. About fifty minutes past our reservation, we were finally seated. No real apology, or anything to do right by us. Menus were brought, sparkling water as well and we proceeded to order our food. We decided on the charred mushrooms ($14) and French onion soup ($12) as our appetizers. The mushrooms were bland, boring and the char on it was offputting, the latter being a recurring them with our entrees. The French onion soup was decent but not salted. Not enough depth of flavor, barely any sherry or seasoning. The bread service, however, was good. The baguette was pretty good and it came with some cornichons which were pretty awesome. The butter was cold and hard to spread; they should have served it at room temp to knock this out of the park. Our entres came shortly after and both of our steak frites ($32) were cooked to temp nicely. The fries were really good but the steaks were charred. Really charred, and not in a good way. It was very offputting and on the verge of burnt on the outside. It was such a nice piece of meat - we were both really bummed. Service was fine - nothing great, nothing bad really except for the hostesses not doing a very good job with the front of the house and managing the queue and reservations. All in all the place has some potential but completely missed the mark. The food was far from being as good as the likes of a Gaslight, Eastern Standard or even a Marliave. Frankly, any place that sits you down nearly an hour past your reservation and doesn't acknowledge it in any way shouldn't be in the hospitality business. But even if you look past this, the food just wasn't very good. read more

My partner and I came here for a late-Valentine's Day dinner at 8 pm-- I'm so glad we had a reservation. We did have to wait 15 minutes because it was a packed house, but we didn't mind. When we were seated we ordered some drinks-- the Ephemeral Elixir and the Can Can Dancer-- both were so good!! We started with free French bread with butter and cornichons (not pictured) and the grilled octopus and patatas bravas. The octopus was well grilled, soft and chewy, and the perfect amount of char to it. It paired very well with the potatoes and olives. For the entrees, I ordered the scallop carbonara while he had the New York strip. The carbonara was excellent! The sauce I later found out could be made dairy-free! The scallops practically melted in my mouth and the pasta was made to perfection with the presence of pancetta. My partner doesn't usually go for a NY strip cut, but went for it as they had run out of the prime rib from the plats du jour. However, the steak lived up to his standards! I had a few bites of it myself. Very tender, juicy, and flavorful! The bernaise really complimented the meat. For dessert, we chose the creme brûlée-- served out of a ramekin and on top of a cookie with blood orange curd. It was a nice twist to the traditional creme brûlée! The upstairs dinning area was bright, spacious, and open, making it a very inviting place to have a meal. There is a view of the expansive kitchen, which is always a hit too. Our server, forget his name, was a perfect blend of helpful/suggestive, without being intrusive. The meat & cheese board was thoughtfully put together with all of its accompaniments, which paired nicely with the main attractions. It was also a great value for the price, relative to what one receives. My wife's Coq Au Vin was very tasty and it had that "warm hug" quality to it, as a dish like that should. My steak frites were a miss, however, which is a huge letdown from a French bistro. While my steak was cooked to the proper done-ness, I feel that it sat under a heat lamp or was kept warm for way too long, as all the juices had escaped, leaving a somewhat rubbery, unsatisfying bite of steak. The profiteroles, which were suggested, were fine, very run-of-the-mill. There was a beautiful Bordeaux on the glass menu, but the price points were a little steep, if I am splitting hairs. All-in-all, I am not running back per se, especially given the fact that Bar Lyon exists in the city, but I wouldn't turn it down if someone suggested. read more

This new French restaurant in Back Bay has been receiving a lot of attention lately, but unfortunately I don't think it lives up to expectations. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Food was uninspired and bland, and it took too long to actually get the food. I would be concerned how long the wait for food would be during peak hours. Their weekend brunch is busy and expect to wait or book well in advance. Arrived ~2pm on a Saturday for a reservation as the crowds were starting to disperse. The ambience was somewhat lively and the decor was pleasant. Ordered the Broccoli Reuben and the French Toast but these 2 seemingly simple dishes took around 40 minutes to arrive at the table. This might be acceptable during the peak of brunch service, but seemed too long given it was already past the busiest times. Broccoli Reuben: the broccoli was cut into pieces that were too large and included large chunks of stalks. The stalks generally don't have much flavor which made the sandwich generally flavorless. The broccoli was also underseasoned which didn't help. The fries that came with it was also lukewarm and chewy. French Toast: Good texture but again it seemed to be quite bland, relying heavily on the maple syrup for flavor. read more

We were seated at 1:30pm with a 12:30pm reservation. Yep, we waited an hour on a Saturday afternoon. The host kept telling us a few more minutes and then a waiter wound up seating a different party at the table the host told us was ours. Needless to say, it was a crappy way to start brunch. A breakfast tart was sent to the table that we didn't order as a way to say sorry. It wasn't really even touch. What a waste! Our drinks took over 20 minutes and when they were finally brought over, the glass was chipped and the drink needed to be replaced. Thankfully the food we ordered was good. Staff approached the table trying to make up for the beginning of our meal but at that point it was too late. You know what would have made it a little less annoying? French restaurants are popping up all over the city and Rochambeau is showing Boston how to do delicious French bistro cuisine. This restaurant is a multilevel delight with a very traditional bistro bar downstairs and a brighter dining room upstairs. Next door they have also opened a Parisienne style cafe that offers traditional patisseries and coffee all day. We decided to dine at the downstairs bar for dinner. To start the meal we ordered the gem lettuce salad and egg in a jar. The salad was a simple blend of soft buttery lettuce and radish but the dressing transformed this simplistic dish into a true French classic. The egg in a jar was a total umami bomb of flavour. The egg was custard-like and cooked perfectly with a runny Center. The dish was dressed with crispy oyster mushrooms and fried chicken skin. The combination of the egg, mushroom and chicken skin was a mixture of flavors that I have never had but absolutely adored! This is a dish that I would certainly return for. We then shared the Black Cod main dish and roasted carrots. The cod was moist and light and atop a bed of white beans that were stewed in a tomato broth. The richness of the beans complimented the lightness of the fish. The carrots were very charred, however they were delicious. In fact, it was hard to delineate if the heavy cook on the vegetables was purposeful or not. The carrots came atop a hummus-like spread with a reminiscent pesto flavour that complimented the earthy veggies. A unique aspect of this restaurant is that each day they have a special dish that is published online on their menu; you don't have to wait until you arrive at the restaurant to know about their daily specials. Rochambeau makes delicious and traditional French food, check this place out if you want to be transported to Paris for the evening. read more

Lovely place inside, our waiter was very attentive and sweet. We started with the baguette and butter which was nice. I had the steak frites and my partner the rochamburger. The burger was good, nice meat and brioche bun. My steak was a bit undercooked from what I ordered, it was proper rare, but the quality was good, so it was okay. Lovely herb butter on top. The béarnaise was missing fresh tarragon, but most of all, the amount was surprisingly small. It was good, but it was not a 39$ meal. I had a Glass of French Malbec (13$) which was good value for money. I struggle to get on 4 stars which is a shame, but the very small amount of side. My boyfriend and I were on our weekly Boston date and decided to give this play a try. We got seated not far from the door. We proceeded to wait 20 minutes and a very nice gentleman brought us water. The waitress passed my boyfriend and I, no joke 8/9 times without even looking over. We saw her go to her 3 other tables multiple times and not once gave us any attention. We both work in a busy restaurants so we know how serving works. She not once even said be with you guys in a bit, didn't even look over. We asked the gentleman who brought us water if he could get the waitress for us and he did go up to her. But shortly after proceeded to ignore us and go up to her other tables. On top of that the bottom floor was not busy at all. We waited a few more minutes then just walked out and crossed to our usual spot Del Frisco's.
