This time we were ravenous, having spent 12 hours carrying heavy boxes and furniture all day, so primed for a good meal. The Rouleaux egg rolls were superb and the steamed shrimp & crab dumplings outstanding, both accompanied by simple but distinct sauces that really made them pop. Our entrees were equally impressive. The crispy fried catfish (Trey Tuk Peng Pah) and seafood noodles (Crevettes, Moules, Champignon Et Pates De Riz Au Gingembre) are my favorites. Hey Foodies, it's SJ here with another review! This Friday, my boyfriend and I decided we wanted to try The Elephant Walk. The reviews looked good and I was excited to try their unique menu... well, let's just say we were very disappointed. First of all the prices are very expensive. I know this is Boston, but $17 for a cocktail is ridiculous! Our server was lovely, he was very kind and had a kind spirit. I was excited to try the "Rouleaux" since they remind me of the eggrolls, my mother learned from her Vietnamese mother-in-law. It was very crispy, which unfortunately is the only good thing I can say about it. The flavor was so off. It's almost as if the ingredients in the Rouleaux were loudly competing for my attention simultaneously! It didn't really melt in your mouth either, it just felt heavy. The other appetizer we ordered was called Dumplings croustillants au poet epics. This was actually worse than first appetizer. I like lemongrass, but MAN the lemongrass was so overpowering. Came on a Sunday evening and place is busy but seats are easily available. The ambiance is very cozy and Thai so very comfortable. The staff are very friendly and efficient. Although the serving staff might be so busy as I only see her alone. Came for the dine out dinner menu so I got an app, entree and dessert. The keing D' ananas (cubed porked in a shrimp and fish broth like curry with pineapple) and beef bourguigon was amazing and hands down one of the best in Boston I have tried so far. The entree for mussels and fried pork spring rolls are great but nothing out of the ordinary. Finally, the desserts we got the chocolate truffle cake and that was rich but very delicious. But I personally like a lighter taste so the poached pear with raspberry sorbet was a nice touch to the end! I was intrigued by the combination of cuisines presented on the menu outside the door and it happened to be Dine Out Boston week! I walked inside and was promptly seated. All of the servers were very nice! The drinks here are great. I got a lychee mocktail that wasn't too sweet. The food was different from anything I've had before. Portion sizes are huge! Nothing was bad, but I wouldn't get any of the food I tried again. Maybe I chose all the wrong dishes to try? As a Cambodian, I think I'll stick to making my own dishes at home instead of dining out. I got a salad that had mango in it, which I was expecting to be something similar to a raw papaya salad, but it had large strips of ripe mango and I just wasn't into it. I did appreciate the huge shrimps in the salad that were perfectly cooked. The grilled trout was missing salt, mostly burnt, and had lots of bones (Yes, it's fish. Yes, fish has bones, but I don't like working for my food). I was struggling to finish this and the mango salad, and not because of the portion sizes. Elephant Walk has been a neighborhood fixture for the past decade serving up delectable Cambodian fare. It has a welcoming, low key vibe with a bar and tv on one side and more seating on the other. Service is lovely. The spring rolls are solid. The batter is light and crunchy, like a Viet imperial roll. The filling was a bit mushier than I expected but still tasty. Love that is hands on to wrap it with the lettuce and hot sauce to your liking. The short rib noodles were tasty. Ribs were slow cooked for awhile and decent sauce. Ate a tad dry. I'd been meaning to try The Elephant Walk for a long time, since I'd heard great things. The vibes there were fairly nice, but not necessarily upscale. I found the service to be standard. However, I must say that I wasn't crazy impressed with the food. It was solid, but didn't live up to the hype in my opinion. While the menu was interesting just as advertised, I didn't find my dish (a seafood curry) to be overly flavorful. It also wasn't especially filling. I went to The Elephant Walk on a Sunday afternoon and it was exactly the vibe I needed--lively but not chaotic, cozy but not cramped, and very cute! I started with the salted cornbread skillet, and I'm still thinking about it. Warm, slightly sweet, perfectly salty, and served in a mini skillet. Truly one of the best starters I've had in a while. The cheeseburger was everything a cheeseburger should be. Juicy, flavorful, perfectly cooked, and satisfying. No notes. For dessert, I had the milk and cookies--and this was not your basic Toll House situation. These were warm, gooey, gourmet-level cookies with a side of cold milk that made me feel like both a nostalgic kid and a fancy adult at the same time. I have been wanting to try this place for years and finally made it there tonight. The casual but elevated atmosphere was evident when I walked through the door. I was quickly greeted but chose to sit at the bar. The rest of the seats quickly filled up with people who were clearly regulars. I asked the woman sitting next to me for recommendations and she told me that she has enjoyed everything she has ever had here. After speaking with the bartender, who was very friendly and helpful in spite of being busy, I decided on a boneless beef short rib and noodle dish that was absolutely fabulous! The only suggestion I have is to cook the fresh noodles less so they're more al dente. I was offered some hot sauce which came on the side in little ramekins. The food was excellent featuring both a French and Cambodian influence. The pork tenderloin was very good. I had it with mashed potato rather than the rice. The pork was cooked to perfection and featured a caramelized sauce of coconut milk, black pepper, and garlic. The Beef tenderloin caramelized in black pepper, garlic and mushroom soy, fresh lettuce, lime-garlic dipping sauce, was also fabulous! For desert, on our waitperson suggestion, we enjoyed Sangkhia L'Pao, Coconut milk custard with Kambocha squash, garnished with coconut cream and fresh coconut. It was refreshing and light. Solid Cambodian spot in South End. I came here for dinner with friends during Dine Out Boston. Their 3-course meal included and appetizer, main course, and dessert. I selected the crispy spring rolls, roasted chicken and rice and the truffle chocolate cake. The spring rolls came with lettuce, bean sprouts and a citrusy fish sauce dipping sauce which complemented the pork filling well. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the rice was so flavorful. I also loved the dipping sauce included with this dish. The chocolate cake was the perfect way to end the decadent meal. Service was quick and the bar offerings are extensive. My favorite dish combos from the set menu at this time were the Khmer noodle appetizer and Bai Mouan (incredibly tender bone in chicken with rice dish). I wasn't sure what to expect with this cuisine, but I found it all delicious. I came here with friends to take part in their Dine In Boston menu. The 3 course meal came with an array of choices that included vegetarian options. I had the avocado citrus soup to start which I was surprised at how much I liked. It was creamy with notes of citrus that made the dish feel light and a bit summery. For my main dish I got the Poulet A La Citronnelle which leaned heavily on the curry flavors and was tasty and delicious. For dessert I had the Le Péché Au Chocolat which was good but a little too much one flavor- I personally would have preferred vanilla or something to cut the chocolate a bit but still a good dish. My mom and husband took me here for my now 3rd birthday dinner. Place was quaint but buzzing with people by the time we arrived during a huge rain storm. Our server was very nice. My only complaint was that the menu only had a few vegetarian options (my husband looked it up and thought there were much more), but we were assured that many of the menu items could be made vegetarian. French cambodian seemed like an exciting mix but turned out to be just an americanized version of an asian menu with a slight influence of french classics. Seemed like the spot was popular for a Thursday evening, people kept pouring in as the evening went on. The staff were very sweet but definitely understaffed because it took forever for us to order and get the check. We got the spring rolls and the two vegan curries with tofu. The spring rolls were nice but the curries lacked salt and pretty much any flavor. The yellow curry was basically just onions with a couple of tofu pieces. This is such a nice restaurant in such a cute neighborhood and I'm incredibly glad that I was able to try this place out for the first time while they were offering their Winter 2025 Dine Out Boston menu! Even with a reservation for dinner at 8pm, we waited about 10 minutes while they got our table ready. While service felt a bit of the slower side, it was understandable since the restaurant felt perpetually packed, though everyone appeared like they were enjoying the food! I love how unlike most other restaurants offering Dine Out fixed price menus, they had so many options for each of the three courses. My friend and I really appreciated how much variety there was, especially since The Elephant Walk sells itself as a kind of fusion restaurant mixing French and Cambodian cuisines, and I also really liked how many gluten-free options they had, as someone with celiac requiring strict dietary accommodations. I ended up ordering the: -Kapik Khing as an appetizer: instead of the rice croquette (which would've been fried in shared equipment, unsafe for celiac), this dish was served to me with a side of regular fluffy jasmine rice. This was the first time that I've ever tried any sort of meat cooked in these specific Cambodian spices and it blew me away! The pork belly was so flavorful and tender and there was so much amazing savory sauce that I honestly think that it goes much better with a side of rice, so that you can really soak in all of that amazing flavor, instead of a crispy croquette. I also really liked how the pickles served on the side provided such a contrast to the rich, hearty meat. My friend ordered the Prince Edward island mussels instead and the biggest takeaway from the appetizers round was our genuine shock at how large the portions were. I'm not exaggerating when I write that we were basically border-line full after our appetizers, and couldn't believe that we still had two more courses to go. It was probably a good thing that it took a while for our next dishes to come out! -For the main course I ordered the Pave de saumon, which wasn't anything particularly exotic or special but it was a classic and it didn't disappoint. The salmon filet was quite large as a portion and had a wonderful crispy skin, though I wasn't able to fully enjoy the skin since there was such a heavy creamy mushroom sauce covering most of the filet, which was a bummer! The arugula salad was very simple with some tomatoes, the mashed potatoes were buttery and smooth. My friend ordered the braised lamb curry with veggies, though she reported that it honestly felt like the protein she got was beef, not lamb...which was a little odd. Regardless, the flavors of our entrees were still on point and we had plenty of leftovers to take to go! -Finally, for dessert, my friend and I split the chocolate truffle cake and the coconut milk custard, both of which were gluten-free! The chocolate cake was very rich and decadent and paired so nicely with the raspberry coulis! The coconut milk custard was really interesting - I'd never tasted a dessert quite like it before, it wasn't overly sweet at all and the bottom layer, possibly the part made out of Kabocha squash, tasted almost borderline savory! The coconut cream and fresh coconut toppings really rounded out the dish. Someone sitting right next to us ordered the other dessert option, a type of poached pear with sorbet and it was so beautifully presented, I have no doubts that it tasted as amazing as it looked! Overall, my friend and I had a wonderful meal here - even with some very minor hiccups! Our server was so kind and friendly and I felt very reassured that they took food allergies seriously. So I have mixed feelings about this place. I had been eyeing their rolls after seeing the photos. I grew up with an amazing Vietnamese restaurant that had fried spring rolls made with the rice paper, where the skin was fried to a bubbly perfection. So I was looking forward to trying these. Although I later realized that these were more like the wonton skins instead of rice paper, so it was a bit thick, but overall it was served with a good amount of lettuce, veggies and tart dipping sauce. I would have loved it more with a rice paper skin, but this was still delicious. The man who took my order at the bar was also very considerate about suggesting I order a partial order of 2 or 3 rolls since the full order of 5 would be a lot for one person, I will say, I was was warned before coming here that it is more fusion and Americanized Asian than authentic Cambodian. And the curry definitely said that. First, I do appreciate that they had a lovely vegan curry option which was a thick yellow coconut curry with lots of pumpkin and other veggies. This was a nice change to the usual curries. The only bummer was that there was some gross hair in the plate and when I brought it up, the bartender proceeded to take a knife and dig through my plate to confirm if it was hair or not. It was very obviously a short curly strand of female hair that was bleached as you can see the transition from black to blonde. They did assure me that the man in the back for this station had a hair net, but from the hair it looks more like it is from the lady serving the food. Either way, it does make me cringe thinking about the details. That aside, they did eventually make me a new plate which by that point I wanted to cancel but proceeded to have it since they placed the order. The lychee drink was a nice virgin cocktail, a tad sweet but quite refreshing. Overall, while the food is more fusion than traditional Cambodian, this is still a nice bar and dinner spot for people to gather in the south end. Very unique dishes that were packed with flavor. Of particular, the Loc Lac was very good. The Khar Saiko Kroeung was decent as well - the short rib was very tender and the sauce was packed with flavor, however the pairing with the noodles and pickles wasn't my favorite. The dumplings were alright but quite dry on the inside. For dessert, we got the Poire Pochee Au Reisling and Le Peche Au Chocolat which were both average, nothing special and the pear dish didn't have quite the sweetness I would have wanted. Overall the food was decent with good portion sizes. The drinks were very fun and the service was good, our waiter was very friendly. I will say that the restaurant vibe isn't the best, for the quality of the food, the ambiance doesn't quite match and does not feel very cozy or inviting. read more

What a fusion! I ended up here because I made an attempt to go to the restaurant, but couldn't find parking. I called the restaurant because I knew they were closing soon and they told me to come on down and I'm so glad I did! I started off with a delicious drink with passion, fruit and basil. Angel getting the tuna roll appetizer with an incredible peanut dipping sauce which reminded me of a Tom Yum soup! The tuna was fresh and the exterior was so nice and crispy. I ended up getting the cat fish for dinner. The restaurant makes their own scotch bonnet, hot sauce, and their own Sriracha hot sauce. Both are delicious and I added it to all my meals as well as catfish to give the broth a little kick. The service at the bar was great, and everyone that worked there was incredibly friendly. I came here on a weekday for "date night" to celebrate my friend's birthday. The cuisine (French Cambodian) is very unique. The reservation process was seamless and we got a nice seat near the front. We debated whether to get drinks and ended up getting two different lychee flavored drinks. Mine was the lychee lemonade, which was amazing! For mains, I got the Curry Des Crevettes Aux Légumes Frais (curry with shrimp and vegetables). It came with a very generous number of shrimps, and a variety of veggies with rice. The curry was delicious and I ate every bite! My friend got the Khar Saiko Kroeung (beef short ribs with noodles and pickles) and really liked hers too. Knocking off one star because I felt that the prices were a little bit high ($25-35 per entree), but I can see the argument that the quality and uniqueness made it worth it. Loved this spot! We snagged an 8:30pm reservation for a Saturday last minute for 3 people and were super grateful. The place was packed, but they sat us on time which was appreciated. We ordered the raw tuna egg roll app which was incredible. It was like a huge sushi roll fried. I also loved the dumplings! I got the short rib stew which was delicious! The short rib was so tender and fell apart. I liked how there were mashed potatoes in the stew instead of actual potatoes. They have a generous wine and cocktail list. My friends also loved their meals and the food came out very quickly. Entrees are between $25-$35 and were worth every Penny; so tasty! I'd highly recommend coming here!
