I'm really torn about our dinner there. THE GOOD - The food was superb - I had the Porcini Ravioli, my wife had the Pumpkin Tortelli. Both were exceptionally well flavored and perfectly prepared and presented. The portion size was a bit on the small side, but acceptable. The wines were ~$15 a glass. Yes, it's crazy/stupid high, but normal given that this is Hanover Street. The service was attentive, pleasant, and efficient, although a bit rushed. The decor and vibe/atmosphere were lovely. THE BAD - Two people, two vegetarian entrees, no appetizers, and two glasses of wine for well over $100 is too much. There are fewer and fewer reasonable mid-range dining options where one can have a similar dinner of equal (or better) quality and service, but for $60-$70. If spending over $100 for this is ok with you, then this restaurant would be a good fit. Maybe the days of delightful mid-range restaurants are over? read more

The atmosphere was amazing and the staff were super friendly. The food was great. I really liked the bison. The waitress said not a lot of people order it. It may be from menu placement. It's worth a try if you're adventurous. The brûlée was average. My wife absolutely loved the short rib. I liked it and I'm not even a fan of balsamic vinegar. The beignets were good. Note for Chase Sapphire Reserve card holders... this restaurant is on the Open Table Reserve list, which can be a nice perk. read more

Cute restaurant in the North End. Love the patio. Service was excellent. The drinks are amazing. 10/10 no notes, probably will come back only for drinks next time. The bread that comes out has a rosemary butter on the side, which is really good. Steak Meatballs (7/10): crispy on the outside. good but not the best meatball I've had. Streak Tartare (8/10): loved the texture of the chips it came with. flavorful. Mushroom risotto (6/10): usually love risotto but this missed the mark for me. Chocolate Cake (9/10): star of the show in my opinion Apple Pie (8/10): the pie part tasted like a churro, which was unique and delicious. Treated so horribly there. Walked in, it was busy, off a tour- we came as men dressed in golf shirts & women were casual...the manager scoffed that we just wanted seats at the bar & then questioned one of our party (carrying a leather backpack) saying he didn't know what was in it. We are in our 50's...we aren't thugs. I'm sure thugs would had beater treatment. We knew it was busy & maybe we wouldn't get a seat but we were treated so rude & disrespectfully. We were referred by the restaurant across the street that was packed. It's ok if you don't have room but I think you can be polite & say you're full is sufficient. I had read the negative reviews beforehand but the menu sounded delish so I still wanted to try it out myself :) I can see why some reviews are iffy, but overall I had a good experience. The good: -the filet mignon was SO good and cooked perfect! -the apps were good (tuna tartare and meatballs) -vibey & lively atmosphere -delish drinks The so-so: -the gnocchetti with wild boar was honestly kinda tasteless to me... needed more flavor or salt -service wasn't that slow, but they kept passing us by and forgetting things we asked for (server was nice though) -the apple pie was super hard. I feel like even if they were aiming for a crispy crust/dough it was too much, we reallyyyy had to stab at it lol It happened to be our anniversary too which I noted on the reservation. I wanted them to write happy anni on our plate like I saw in some photos lol so I told them it was our anni and they did :) I'm not sure if they would have acknowledged it otherwise. Wow, what an amazing experience we had at Umbria during our first visit to Boston! My boyfriend lived in Milan for a year and is very particular about Italian food. He says this is the best pasta he has ever eaten in the US. The veal Parmesan was equally phenomenal, and the service by Carlos, our waiter, was top notch. For a friends birthday dinner, she chose this restaurant. It was a Wednesday night 7:30pm reservation for 8 people. They had large table ready for us upon arrival. The service started out great with getting us settled. We ordered an appetizer (fried seafood platter) until everyone arrived. Well seasoned and fried. Once everyone arrived it took quite some time before we were able to place our orders and get water, even though we requested it several times. Bread and butter finally arrived about 25 minutes in and so did the water. We placed our orders and had great convo until our food arrived as the atmosphere is great. Music was good, not too loud and lighting was great, perfectly dim, not too dark. About half of us enjoyed our meals of steaks, pastas, lobster mashed potatoes but a few of us not so much. 3 meals were barely warm and a few items came out incorrectly, not sure if they ran out of broccolini but we ordered 2 sides of it and got broccoli rabe instead which was bland and had a very bitter and different flavor profile. When asked about it, they said that's what they had without offering any explanation or options for us. Everyone loved their drinks. Great location and vibe, some minor tweaks on food temps and informing guests of substitutes in advance would be helpful. They do have valet parking and the cost was reasonable. On 5/8/26 Had a 6 PM reservation for 8 people, obviously not some massive party size for a restaurant that should be used to handling it. We ordered 4 different 24 oz steaks for the table to split around 6:30 along with all our appetizers. Apps came out around 6:50-7:00 and everything seemed great. Then we waited another hour and 10 minutes for the steaks to come out. Food finally hit the table at 8:07. Meanwhile, we watched multiple tables sit down, order, eat, and leave before our entrees even arrived. The most embarrassing part was the manager. Never came over once to explain the delay, apologize, or even acknowledge the situation. When we finally asked how people who came in after us had already finished eating, all he said was, "We're busy." $1,200 to wait an hour and 37 minutes for 4 steaks is an absolute disgrace. I wouldn't piss on that manager if he was on fire. Big nose loser in a suit doing absolutely nothing for the place. Only bright spot was our waitress. Hubby and I stopped in during their opening week and wow, what a beautiful modern rustic space. The top floor was not opened yet but it will be the spot for cocktails with a view once it's open. That said, we had a few kinks likely because it was their opening week and service was a bit mixed. Great detail to our table but staff didn't seem to be as knowledgeable about the restaurant's food and process. No one could tell us whether they validated for the Parcel 7 garage (they do in case you're wondering) and they got our order mixed up -- ordered Short Rib Caramelle but got the Braised Short Rib entree instead. Food ordered: Crab cakes, oysters, octopus, lobster dumplings, lobster tacos and short rib pasta. All tasted good enough though there wasn't a specific dish that had the WOW factor and the serving size leaned more to the skimpy end. We ordered 7 dishes between the 2 people and left "not starving". To put it in context, dishes were even smaller than single orders of spanish tapas. Overall, it's a great place to people watch and enjoy some cocktails but if you're not ordering a hefty steak dish, you will order quite a few dishes to make it a filling meal. read more

We visit the North End on a regular basis and of course have our favorite restaurants we like to visit. One of the reasons we often go to the same places, is the service you receive when staff knows you. We visited Umbria for the first time on Saturday night. The restaurant is very inviting and beautiful. The reservation system is different for the rooftop, which the host changed for us with no problem. We sat at the bar downstairs for a drink before heading up to the rooftop for dinner, The service was fast, pleasant and the drinks were very good!! Every member of the staff passing by said hello and welcomed us with a smile, all very friendly. We went upstairs to a Very Modern and Chic bar area, The roof was open and atmosphere was so lively. We were greeted immediately after being seated. Our server was Morgana, I cannot say enough about her, I felt like I knew her. She was warm, friendly, very knowledgeable about food and wine list. She found common things to talk about with us and her service was top notch. I felt like her priority was just our table! We were able to take our time and enjoy. We were well taken care of with Morgana!!! The manager's came over to check on us and make sure everything was enjoyable. The food was delicious! Went for a very early dinner on a recent Saturday evening. Many of the restaurants in the North End were packed even before 6, so we were surprised to get a table at Umbria. It's huge though, with multiple floors and lots of dining space. I'm not sure if they didn't have enough wait staff or people were new, but it look a long time to get any service, and that was only after I got up and asked. The menu isn't particularly Italian heavy, but they accommodated plain noodles and spaghetti for the kids. The adults ordered the Maryland Crab Cakes for a starter and Pappardelle and Gnocci as mains. The Gnocci was meh but everything was pretty good (3 mini crab cakes for $24 is kind of a lot), Desserts seem to be where Umbria shines. The kids liked the cheesecake and creme brulee. They offered us a couch on the rooftop if we ordered an app so that's what we did. My boyfriend loved his espresso martini- strong, mildly creamy with a coco powder rim. My peach mojito was a bit too sweet for my liking. The Surf and Turf appetizer stole the show! The mashed potato's, pork belly, and scallop flavors all meshed and everything was cooked to perfection. This wasn't our first visit to Umbria. In fact, my first visits were five stars. This is for our specific experience today. Arrived for our reservation and were seated promptly. Water came quickly. After 15 minutes no one had come over and greeted us, asked for a drink order or acknowledged us. I finally flagged one of many food runners and asked if we had a server. He took our drink order and was gracious. I was ready to move on. When our server came to the table he did not greet us and asked if we were ready to order. After 30 minutes we were ready to order. Our first course came and it was wrong. First we ordered different salads, but then he remembered. It was rectified. The remainder of the meal (rib eye, pork chop, amazing sides, great cocktails including the espresso martini) was incredible and reminded me why I chose this restaurant in the first place. It's valentines weekend and maybe it's busy, but being left alone for nearly 20 min in a heated alley at with no bread or cocktails is depressing. In fact, if I didn't have to pay $40 cash to valet my car I would have gone elsewhere. It's a beautiful space, great food and historically great service. Don't take loyal customers for granted. My first experience at Umbria was the best Friday night I've had in a while. This was thanks to three of the kindest members of the Umbria staff: Jade, Leo, and Dillon. My gorgeous date for the evening aspired to end the night on Umbria's rooftop by the fire pits. It was immediately evident that the venue is a popular spot as soon as we reached the top of the stairs. I worried that my date's night might be ruined. Luckily, a few pleases went a long way with the one and only, kind, understanding, and empathetic bar manager, Jade. Although she knew she probably shouldn't have seated us in such a high-priority spot, she did it anyway, sensing my desperation. Another member of the lovely Umbria team, Leo, also contributed to making my date's night special by giving Jade a nod to signal that we could sit by the beautiful fire. Most importantly, shoutout to Dillon for not only shaking the best two pear martinis since the beginning of time but also for all the 30-second confidence-boost pep talks (which, mind you, ultimately led me to score a second date--though I have no business being with her)! Funniest racist experience ever. My brother in law was hosting a get together there. So we were invited guests (me and two ladies). We were coming from the Red Sox game. The Security at the front door, black haired rico suave guy, looked at us and said the bar wasn't taking anymore guests. It was 11 pm and the place closes at 1 am. I laughed cause it was obvious he didn't want me, a brown guy in. What is funny is this place is on a second floor and we were greeted by other people who worked there. So the place being closed wasn't an issue. My brother (he's white) had to walk down and get us. Security then tells him that if he's with us he can't go back in. Lmao My bro in law proceeds to tell him that he has a tab for 10 people upstairs and the bar is empty so whats the problem? Against his better judgement he lets us in. Haha. All of a sudden, the bar has a no hat policy. He walks me down in the bar and makes me take my hat off. This place is nice, but not fine dining. It's a very nice bar. I take my hat off and point out there's two other guys (not my skin tone) wearing hats without issue. Then the no hat policy gets enforced. Clearly, only enforced once I walked in. Lol We have a great time except the guy keeps finding rules I was breaking. Nobody else, except me. He left his post greeting guests and stands in the hallway leaning out into the bar making eye contact with me for the next hour and a half. The night ends, we are walking out, and I put my hat on and he confronts me for wearing it again as we are WALKING OUT. lol! I'm laughing and talk back, and he proceeds to statt yelling and followed me outside the bar. Yes followed me for 2 stories out of the place. Comes on the sidewalk, which I told him, if he touched me, he's going to jail and he'd alone with a party of 8 dudes so he should relax. He came to his senses, thankfully, and proceeds to yell in his B town accent "You effing Lose-ah!" And left. Joke of the day. Not from Boston, so don't know him. First time here. This place is phenomenal! Amazing drinks, amazing service, amazing food, amazing ambiance. I cannot even begin to explain the level of service Anxhela provided behind the bar. Not only did she make a wonderful cosmo (I'm a tough critic), but she recommended a beautiful Italian white wine based off the flavor profile of the white wines I normally drink. Guess what? All of the negative-leaning Yelp reviews of Umbria must be from people who: 1) are trying to feed children, 2) are tourists looking for a quick bite, or 3) don't have an appreciation and understanding that artisanal food doesn't come in huge unnecessary portions. Don't write off Umbria over "small portion sizes."
