This is the second time we've been to Rochambeau for brunch and it ceases to disappoint. This time we sat out in the patio; sun umbrellas covered us from the scorching sun, the ambiance was perfect and the live jazz band aided to perfect Saturday brunch. Special shout out to Sebastian, our fantastic waiter, who taught us how to pour champagne the right way. Bucket of bubbles: ($40) comes with a bottle of champagne and 3 cute sides of grapefruit juice, orange juice, and cranberry juice. Perfect to buzz 3 people or slightly more than buzz 2 Steak frites: a yummy medium rare; butter sauce is artery-clogging good. 8/10 would recommend. Duck confit hash: So fatty and delicious. We had some hit or miss dishes and drinks during our dinner at Rochambaeu. But overall my experience was decent, even though the first floor was quite loud. The wait was shorter for the first floor than the second floor, so we managed. What we ordered: steak tartare, French onion soup, and smoked bluefish pate for apps. Lobster cavatelli for the main entree. Our favorite app was the French onion soup - it was flavorful and cheesy and delicious. However, the steak tartare was lacking a bit. It didn't have much flavor other than the creamy white sauce on top. The bluefish pate was alright as well. It had more flavor than the steak tartare but not much. The lobster cavatelli was very delicious - it had a very decent portion of lobster. It was slightly too salty but still was the favorite dish of the night. Their cocktails weren't my favorite. I had their version of the G+T that had elderflower ice cubes. It was so strong on the floral scents that it felt like I was straight up drinking perfume. Not the ideal drink to pair with a meal. I should've just played it safe and gotten a wine. I'd give this place a 3.5 star, but I'll round up - the service was great, and it seemed like a good spot for HH. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to come here for our anniversary. We started with two drinks, the oyster a la bourguignonne and the charcuterie and cheese platter. We also received a complimentary loaf of bread with butter and pickles. The oysters were really good, as well as everything else. To eat I had the lobster cavatelli. My boyfriend had the rohan duck breast a l'orange and we shared a side of macaroni gratin. The cavatelli was good very rich and was had a good portion of lobster. My boyfriend enjoyed the duck however wished there was a side. It came on a bed of blanched artichoke which was just ok. The side of macaroni gratin was disappointing. The sauce was good but very runny/soupy. The mac and cheese could have been so good. For desert we had the blood orange gelato which came with a lemon poppyseed cookie, chocolate chip cookie and some kind of almond cookie. We also tried to the 3 scoops gelato flight. The three flavors were spiced chai, vanilla and salted caramel. Our serve was very nice and attentive. The only negative thing about our experience was the reservation. We had it online and when we arrived the hostess asked us to wait while she checked on our table. When she came back she asked if it was ok to sit downstairs in the seating area instead in the upstairs dining area. It was a little loud but not a big deal. The negative was that my seat was in the path of the door so every time someone walked in I was hit with a frigid gust of cold air. Overall had a nice experience. read more

Visited last night at Rochambeau. Another venture of the Lions Group in Boston. While it was a quiet evening in the city, the restaurant was excellent. The staff from the seat was very attentive, very accommodating of special requests and frankly exceeded my expectations. The food was brilliant as well. I ordered the Frenchie Burger which was perfectly cooked and a side order of the bernaise. Wow. All I will say. Exceptional quality of the bernaiuse. Made fresh, very light, very tasteful and a perfect complement to the side of fries with the burger. The Charcuterie board... not sure if you can call it that. There were 2 meats one that look like a meat loaf and tasted horrible and left a long lasting after taste and prosciutto, pickled veggies, and cheeses, the ultimate hard cheese which tasted like Parmesan and the softest of the softest which was like a creamy butter spread. The veal porterhouse - lack of flavor in the meat and sauce, the potatoes were overly garlicky. The steak frites - only thing that is worth eating are the fries. My friends and I came to Rochambeau for brunch on a Sunday and had a pretty good experience! We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated promptly. The space was pretty empty, although I'm not sure if this was intentional to promote social distancing. Either way, it felt very quiet and ambient during our time there. We ordered the bucket of bubbles ($40 for a group of 3). The waiter set up the juices nicely and it was fun to create your own drink! I got the breakfast tarte flambee (or flatbread) which was pretty good! It was definitely a heavy dish for brunch, but they were generous with their portion of eggs and cheese. Overall, we had a good time here, but it didn't stand out much to me. Their interior design makes it a great place for a special occasion! Went here for brunch on a Saturday and had a really great experience. The indoor dining room has Wes Anderson vibes, very stylish and chic. I wanted something on the lighter side of things and I opted for the grilled chicken paillard, which was fresh and tasty, perfect for what I wanted. We enjoyed our first visit here not long after they opened... and our visit tonight again was excellent. I like the Onion Soup, excellent cheese, onions, but would be even better if they punched up the broth to make it richer. The warm baguette and cornichons w/dijon... both awesome. We remembered the killer bread from last time and was looking forward to it... fantastic. A special of Fried Calamari was great... Pommes Frites served very hot, a key to it being so good. Roasted Squash entree, an excellent vegetarian option which my wife enjoyed. I came specifically on a Saturday to get the Prime Rib (only served on Saturdays). Was a great piece of rib and also really loved the sides... heirloom carrots and scalloped potatoes... both perfect accompaniments... enjoyed as much as the prime rib! Check out the photos... a thing of beauty. We ordered 2 desserts... the profiteroles were good, preferred the creme brulee, fantastic... both dressed up to celebrate my wife's birthday. Cocktails were well made, fresh juices... and wine by the glass well chosen. Recommend the Leflaive White Burgundy and for red, the Legende Bordeaux... I appreciate the nice, appropriate glassware. This is an impressive spot. From the beautiful retro-meets-modern decor to the fabulous food, I didn't want to leave! I couldn't stop looking around the place. It was just stunning and had such a good, comfortable, upscale vibe. My husband took me here for my birthday. We started with the french onion soup and steak tartare. The soup had a really strong beef broth flavor, which is different from what I expected but it was delicious. So warm and comforting on a cold night. It's hard to find a place that serves steak tartare (one of my favorite things) so when I see it, I have to get it. This tartare was perfect - great portion size, great flavor and I liked that they served it with toasted bread instead of pita or tortilla chips. For my entree, I ordered the pork osso bucco. The meat and whipped potatoes just melted in your mouth. My husband got the steak frites which was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and when you put the garlic butter on top, I'm not sure if anything can top that flavor - best steak frites ever!! We topped off this great meal with the profiteroles, which is basically a piece of heaven on a plate. Do not skip this place - you will not be disappointed!! The interior feels like a vintage luxury train car. Every detail from the floor tiles to the lighting is well thought out. The staff was very well versed in the menu and gave great recommendations. Went here after I saw the $36 steak and unlimited fries advertised on tiktok. One of my friends had a severe allergy to nuts and sesame and they at first told us the steak sauce on her steak would have to be different because the original one might have allergens. They ended up bringing over 3 steaks with no sauce and one 1 sauce and for some reason I got the one with the sauce which lead me to believe that was the allergy free one because it was the only one different from the other ones. We waited 10 minutes before eating it for our server to come over and eventually I just got up to find her because everything was getting cold. A manager ended up confirming none of the steak had allergens and that they just didn't put the sauce as an abundance of caution... the whole thing was just really unclear and the friend with the allergy had a really anxious time. The order didn't really make sense because why was I the only one with the sauce? Hers really should've been the one without it and because mine was the only one with it, it lead to a lot of confusion. If you have allergies you get it!! We also all asked for our steaks medium and some of the were so rare we couldn't eat it. The flavor was not great and very thing was so greasy- like the steak wasn't even good. The fries were ok but extremely over salted and I love salty fries but it was excessive. The service was terrible after we were done nobody checked on us for ~30 minutes. The did offer us free dessert because it was my partners birthday but at that point we had been there for 2.5 hours on a meal we all didn't like and wanted to leave! Where do I begin? I went into the Marathon yesterday and could not get in anywhere to get something to eat. Finally found this place for outdoor seating. We started to eat and then the rain started coming down. They tried to push us inside but there was no room. We found an area on the side of the building where no rain was coming down. Food was delicious and the manager came out with free round if drinks for braving the elements. It was nice still to watch the runners and have a quick meal with great wait staff. The vibes of the restaurant are great. Super pretty interior and where we were sitting you could see directly into the kitchen which was fun. Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend checking this place out. The ambiance and atmosphere brings you back a few years which is really unique and a nice feel. Our service was good overall, a bit delayed coming to us at first but very attentive afterwards. The drinks were beautiful in presentation however a bit on the sugary side for my liking. I tried two different ones but seemed like that was the flavor they were going for. I'll have to say the baguette with the sea salt butter was top notch(warm and very fresh). We also started with a burrata salad which had good flavor. For dinner I had the muscle frites and my girlfriend had the ribeye. Just say, "Oui" to Rochambeau. This is a hidden gem that is not so hidden on world-famous Boylston Street in Back Bay. Exceptional food in regards to preparation and overall quality. The décor is modern and well designed and features marvelous lighting and upstairs window views of the city street and lights adjacent to the Pru. Let's do some deets: I met my One there (here?) on a quiet lightly snowy night and the restaurant was near empty which is a big plus for me. I was led upstairs where my wonderful One was waiting at a cozy comfortable booth next to a window looking out over the now-serene Boylston Street. We decided upon a couple of cocktails and apps. The cocktails were well made and served in coupe glasses. The apps were the baguette bread served with a soft salty butter and baby gherkins and cocktails onions. The bread was excellent -hot and fresh served in a paper wrapper. The other app was the grilled octopus with a tomato sauce and pine nuts and a myriad of tasty but unidentifiable ingredients. The octo was actually soft and tender as opposed to rubbery which is most often the case with this tasty tentacled delicacy. The main attraction were our entrees of Coq a Van which is my go-to at any place that offers it. I find it to be the Aberdeen Proving Grounds of culinary skills as it varies greatly depending of the chef's abilities and judgement. This entrée was fantastic. Heavy-duty flavor and richness with kankle-inducing thick bacon and all made to order. Kudos to the chef for taking his time preparing these piping hot dishes featuring a krispy chicken skin garnishing the dish with pearl onions and 'shrooms in a complex red-wine sauce caressing the fall-off-the-bone chicken. Truly to die for. We chose a fine wine to accompany our meal which also accompanied an order of Crème Brule which was excellent as well. Service was "on point" (as they say these days) and I do highly recommend Rochambeau for a great dining experience with excellent food and ambience. read more

I'm baffled why the rating for Rochambeau is not higher. I was bracing for a middling experience but was pleased across the board. The setting was perfect; medium noise level so we four had no problems carrying on conversation. The lighting and decor are very attractive. Our waitress was attentive and friendly . Beverage service was a bit slow, but only slightly so, and the atmosphere is so pleasant, we didn't care. The cocktails menu and execution are exceptional! Honestly, among the best I've encountered in my 30 years living in Boston, and we're craft cocktail snobs. (This likely explains why it took a bit extra time for our drinks). I'm not a fan of French food, because it's heavy. But I found two light dishes and enjoyed them both. Everyone liked their starters: friends' onion soups, my brussel sprouts salad, and wife's lobster cocktail. My mussels entree was overflowing with mussels and calamari. My only minor disappointment was that the grilled bread that accompanied it had already cooled off too much and was only slightly grilled. Plus it had some kind of cheese(?) smear on it that was a bit lackluster so I scraped it off. (And I did not see the rouille that was supposed to be part of the dish, unless that was what was on the bread.) Everyone else loved their entrees without reservation (salmon on lentils, cauliflower vegetarian dish, and steak frites.). We split a delicious, spongy light chocolate cake. My wife and I walked in after work on a Thursday night and had an amazing dinner from the friendliest and professional server, Taylor, who made phenomenal drink recommendations. Starters: we got the bread that came with butter and cornichons, French onion soup, and a single grilled lamb chop Entrees: we got the mussels that came with two pieces of bread with a great spread on it and the a la Carte steak frites (which I highly recommend getting) Drinks: we got a glass of a French rose and the Saison DuPont (which I also highly recommend) All in all, I definitely will be coming back for another amazing meal, with tasty drinks, vibey music, and hopefully in Taylor's section! 5/5 stars! read more

I struggled on what to give Rochambeau. It's a 3. The restaurant itself is cute and clean and in a great location. The staff is nice and helpful. But there is a big disconnect with the food. Definitely worth a trip and many follow ups. A gorgeous redo of the former Towne space encompasses two floors and a cafe on Boylston street. The menu is broad but specific to France with the former chef from west bridge in Kendall square manning the helm (one of my previous favorite restaurants prior to its untimely closing). The server doesn't know the menu well and has to make multiple trips to the kitchen to clarify questions on the menu. Service is friendly enough, although brunch seems to take longer than it should. Order of lobster poutine presents cold fries with a lobster bisque filled with chunks of lobster tail - an excellent dish with fries left to get cold or not brought out by server promptly. French toast is wonderfully fluffy and dusted with confectIoners sugar. Duck confit hash is rich and hearty, delicious. An omelette is prepared flawlessly. Avocado toast, although so easy to make at home, is well portioned one excellent bread and worth having made by a professional. Want to return for dinner soon. A great place for brunch. read more

This place used to be called Towne which is now converted into a Cafe attached to the Rochambeau restaurant next door. I can only comment on the cafe section. They retroed the place back into the turn of the 20th century appeal. It was somewhat cozy. My Matcha Latte was decent. It seem like this is a great location for people to come from the hynes convention center next door. It's very casual but for some reason it wasn't overly crowded either. read more

About to head to BU for parent's weekend and I was reminded of last year's visit to this place. It was a terrible experience and ruined our visit. I reached out to the restaurant on more than one occasion. They didnt respond. So I am posting the letter I sent them below. -------- Hello. I just needed to reach out to you over the dinner my family and I had at 845pm on Saturday night. This was a very big occasion, and we had literally just walked out of Back Bay Social, as it was not celebratory enough, and we wanted a special meal. What we experienced was far from it. Note: we are from NYC, and I work in restaurant branding and marketing (our most recent endeavor, Monterey opened last month on Park Ave). First, after being given menus, but no service for a while, it became clear we did not have a server. After inquiring, one of the bus boys came and filled our glasses with tap water (we were not asked if we had a preference). I said sure, but what we really need are drink orders. After another long wait, Tyler came over to take drink orders. After he left I said to my wife, "I don't think he is a waiter". Then a few minutes later, our waitress comes over for the first time and asks what we would like. I asked if she meant for dinner or drinks as someone took our drink order a minute ago. She was confused. We were not ready to order food as we wanted cocktails first, but asked for the chips and dip, and she thought we might want some bread and butter. I didn't know this would be a charge, but whatever... I dont recall who brought these items to us, but we then got ignored again. For a long time. Long enough to know that again WE HAD NO SERVER. Then, someone who appeared to be a manager (had a beard of sorts), took over and asked what we wanted for our meal. I was confused...he wasn't a waiter and wasn't writing anything down. My wife said there's no way he was getting this right. Sure enough, he had to come back and we had to give him the order again. BTW we also saw a mouse and told your staff. Nobody cared about that, or the service we were receiving. At least not enough to apologize at any point during this meal. Drinks were a disaster...we were ordering from busboys, managers, anybody but a server. We were given ones we didn't order... When our food came, the one item my daughter (who we were celebrating) came for..Steak Frites was not a part of the order. They gave us two burgers instead. We asked for the check. They eventually (not quickly) brought the steak out after we had already finished the two burgers (they did ask if we wanted them to be removed from the table....why?). And why wouldn't they slice the steak if it being served family style? I ultimately carved the steak with my steak knife so we could at least try it but we didn't care at this point. It had been too long, we ate the bread, and fries and we were just over it. When we finally got our check - (from a new manager guy - the only one who at least appeared to acknowledge that this was not a proper service) he took the extra burger we didn't order, the steak we didn't eat, and 3 domestic light beers off the bill. I calmly let then know that this "discount" was garbage. We had our dessert at The Yard House in our hotel. I know that I don't mean much to your business, but this ruined our one night in Boston. It wasn't worth the money I spent. We usually go to Waypoint, but my daughter wanted French. For the record I was at 4Charles 2 days earlier in Manhattan. I wanted to go all out. I am in the industry...everyone has an off night. I don't believe in Yelping, but there was ZERO concern for our happiness. Not just the service but A MOUSE? I don't get a waitperson? Each time the food has been amazing and the drinks wonderful. It can get busy but that doesn't seem to impact the service here.
