Very impressed with Roaring fork and my experience there! We were greeted by a friendly hostess and promptly taken to our table. The ambiance/decor is a little outdated but it's very traditional steakhouse decor. Our server explained the menu and gave us the great suggestion of ordering a shareable steak instead of individual for 3 of us. We got the French onion soup to start along with the dry aged ribeye and for sides, the cheesy grits, the brussel sprouts, cornbread and mushroom. I enjoyed everything! I thought the steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and for the sides, the cornbread stole the show. It came hot, soft and so flavorful it didn't really need the butter. Would definitely recommend. I also feel like for a steakhouse the price point is not too bad either and their happy hour menu looked good too(but can only get it at the bar). Overall, will be back! read more

What an awesome place to grab dinner. We walked in with no reservations and were just hoping for the best. We're flexible diners and there was one table vacant at the bar so we sat down right away! We had an awesome server (I believe his name was Jeffery) and he was fantastic. Very engaging, great personality, and he kept us informed on our appetizer and the meal. This was one time where we had the chance to relax and just enjoy the night! We choose the Queso Con Puerco, a great starter! We ran out of chips but our server kept on top of it and we quickly had a refill. Our drinks were the Sweet Potato Old Fashion - I'm not much of a bourbon guy but that was a unique drink I had to try! My entree was the Rainbow Trout w/Sautéed Green Beans - excellent choice!! Since we took our time dining we decided once last drink before heading back to the hotel - I opted to not go with the same drink. I chose The Bee's Knees - Gray Whale Gin, Honey & Lemon. It was definitely different. I would highly recommend trying this place if you make Austin a travel destination. Or if you live here put that on the to do list for a dining adventure. Came to this Roaring Fork location for the 1st time on 11/16/2023 & would definitely recommend this location if meeting up for drinks w/ friends or coworkers. It was intimate but still had plenty of seating & space. Food was fresh & tasty. I had the Spinach Chicken Waldorf salad, which was so delicious & a huge portion (definitely shareable). I also had the apple pie & ice cream for dessert (so delicious!) And the drinks were strong ( I recommend the margarita on the rocks..will definitely have you feelin' a little bit prettier ;) We came during a weekday evening and had no issues w/ finding a metered street parking spot very close by but w/ this location being downtown, I'm sure parking gets very scarce during the weekdays. Awful experience. I'm working late in the attached Sonesta and go down at 9:35 before it closes to order a burger. I was ready to wait for it, but the hostess kindly offers to take it up to my room, and that it should only be ten minutes. Fine. I call at twenty minutes to check and no one answers their phone. I call around forty minutes to check and no one answers their phone. I come downstairs and it has been sitting on the counter for forty minutes and the hostess had already gone home. The burger was still warm but the bun was soggy, maybe because it sat there or maybe just because the quality of the place is bad. It's hard to say since they just left the burger on the counter. I get it if things run a little late, but offering to take it to my room and then leaving for the night with my order sitting there is infuriating. If you're staying at the Royal Sonesta I recommend skipping Roaring Fork entirely. read more

We came here after my husband's birthday at a speakeasy around the corner. I'd only ever gone to the stonelake location, so I was thrilled to try the downtown location. The booths were surprisingly small, and the drinks came slowly. The menu looked like an older version of the stonelake location. We ordered queso which was really watery. Came to the Roaring Fork location in downtown Austin for my brother's birthday and would say the food was well portioned and tasty! Got the cornbread and Big Ass Meatballs for an appetizer. If you're a fan of sweet cornbread, you don't want to pass this up! The meatballs were substantially sized and hit the spot! My main course was the Big Ass Burger with Truffle Fries (substituted for the regular fries they usually come with). My burger was very filling and cooked to the right to the right temperature. The truffle fries were good but not as crispy as I usually like them, and feel like I've had better elsewhere. We ordered their Green Chili Mac and Cheese after a number of great reviews and it was definitely a cool take on two foods I'd never think to put together. My brother ordered the salmon and despite not being the biggest fan of fish, he cleared his plate so I'd say that's a good sign! I would say the only thing I didn't like on the menu that we tasted were the mashed potatoes side, which was a bit too gummy in texture for my liking. Our server Shelby was attentive and very friendly, and helped ensure we had a good time on our special occasion. Mid-week around 8 PM was perfect because it was not too busy/crowded and we were able to get street parking nearby very easily. Keep in mind this location is housed within the hotel. Will be back and would definitely recommend for a nice intimate dinner somewhere close to the downtown scene. read more

The entire population was crammed into a small area while more than half of the restaurant was not being occupied. I spent four nights at the Royal Sonesta and ordered food from the Roaring Fork and worked from my room. Everything was fabulous! If I could change anything, I'd add a Lil Butt burger. The Big Ass burger is too big for one meal. A Lil Butt made with the same care and ingredients would be a hit! The grits were awesome - I tried both the poblano and shrimp. Excellent. I visited the Roaring Fork the first time I was in Austin and told everyone back home about how much I enjoyed the mushrooms. However, it was so long ago that I didn't have Yelp at that time. So here I am again enjoying the succulent mushrooms at the Roaring Fork. I love the atmosphere of the place. The perfect mix of casual and elegant. The bar had a great selection of spirits including my favorite bourbon... Weller. My wife and I stated by splitting the BLT salad. Very good. I had the shrimp and grits and my wife got the filet. Both fantastic. However... as I mentioned, I went there to get the mushrooms and I was once again amazed at the flavor of this side dish. My wife agreed and said my previous bragging was totally justified. Top the night off with a wonderful cherry pie a la mode and the experience was top notch. I can not fail to mention the service. Shelby was an attentive waitress who tended to our every need and made the total experience even that much better. Great job Shelby! I know Austin is the capital of beef whether its in the form of BBQ or just a steak and that there are many steakhouses throughout the state, but the Roaring Fork is and always will be one of my favorite spots to hit when I'm in Austin. Roaring fork is a great steakhouse and general great american food in North Austin and downtown Austin. It's on my list of reliable places to go to when you need a special occasion, similar to Bartletts, Eddie Vs, and others. I have been there many times in the last many years, always received great service and the ambiance is great, whether you sit at the bar area, the main dining or the very nice patio (when it's not too hot), where you can see the quary lake and the joggers. The downtown location is great too. Food is generally very good, with a special note for their trout, as well, of course, as for the big ass burger, an excellent burger and at a great price for happy hour. read more

My pork tenderloin was just ok. Not great. Dry, very peppery and the grits and corn served with it were average at best. The chef apparently really likes black pepper...and so do I. But between the dry meat and the pepper flavor, the dish was underwhelming. Maybe it's just not my kind of food. It was busy and loud, so I guess people do like it. Due to some management decisions (inconsistency across locations), the once large and delicious menu was greatly reduced and of course, major price hikes. This would all be fine and dandy if the quality remained the same, but I felt a major shift. We went to Roaring Fork because it was recommended to try the tomahawk steak. I would have liked to but at $180 I just couldn't do it. So I ordered the shrimp and grits. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner and loved it. Our server was Dakotah and he was very friendly, knowledgeable, and checked in on us just the right amount. The ambiance was very pleasant and calm at first then it did fill up and get louder but we still enjoyed our time. Food was delicious as was dessert. Per our servers recommendation we got the bacon wrapped jalapeños and he did not steer us wrong. We also got the chicken tortilla soup and although it was yummy didn't love the amount of avocado on it. He had the roasted duck with Brussels and I had the rainbow trout with green beans. I'm prefacing this review with two contributing factors. -I ate here with a large group that was part of a bachelor party. (For a group of our size the service was surprisingly good). -My meal was shared due to the size of the cut I ordered the 50 Day Dry aged rib eye with a caesar salad. The caesar salad was solid. Occasionally the some caesar dressing punches you in the mouth with anchovy. Was not the case. It was light and a good appetizer to the meal. There were miscellaneous other sides ordered for the table (not pictured). Highlights: Brussel Sprouts and mushrooms were on point. My previous experience with dry aged beef maxed out at 30 days. 50 day was another beast. I'm not experienced enough to speak to the nuance of dry aging, so I'll just leave it at, I like it. Is it how I'd take my steak everyday? Absolutely not. It's just so rich that to have it everyday would probably make my liver explode. I also ordered a Gin Martini to accompany the steak. It was fine. B-. I wish it was colder. I think Roaring Fork does a lot of things right and I'd like to experience it again outside of the giant group. read more

All of the food was so great- we just wish we could have taken it home with us, although there was not much left when we were done. Ate here with business colleagues late afternoon on Mother's Day. They were essentially out of half of the cocktails and half of the regular menu items, and the waiter kept having to come back after each order and tell us they didn't have it. The same happened with the beer drinks. They were out of a couple of the beers and again the waiter didn't know about it. I asked to speak to the manager, and he was rude, citing that it was Mother's Day and nothing he could do about it. What do you want me to do? Lastly, I ordered a medium rare steak, someone else ordered a medium well-done steak, and of course they gave it to us backwards, even though I specifically asked him. By the way, restaurant is located inside the Sonesta Hotel, as my driver and I had to confirm upon arrival. The rainbow trout was phenomenal on take 2! Had the Hi Pumpkin seasonal cocktail and it was perfect. Served with an old fashioned style ice cube and brown sugar on rim of glass. So grateful for recommendation.
