Apparently they don't do kitchen remodels despite all the photos and reviews for kitchen remodels as recent as Nov 2023. Reached out to them via Yelp for a full kitchen remodel project. New cabs, new ceiling recessed cans & pendants, add an island, new countertops, tile backsplash, etc. Informed them I have floor & demo plans and can email them plus the project scope and photos. Then if the preliminary estimate is reasonable we can schedule coming out for a site visit and full convo, this way we don't waste each others time. Received a quick response that, "we don't do this type of work." UMMM what? I even clarified the request, but got no response. On to the next. I intentionally sought out a GC because my flooring is concrete slab on grade so trenching is required to run electrical to a new island per code. This is very typical in sac, but a GC is typically better suited than a "handy person" due to the multiple trades involved in the process and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the foundational slab. read more

Bob,the owner, was prompt for our first meeting. He measured the area for our new door. He even made some suggestions and a suggested a door company to price/purchase the door. The door took 3 months to receive. Two weeks later, we are very,very,very happy with the new door! Bob showed up the Saturday of the installation and after collaborating with his team, he received a payment. The final payment was given to one of the guys. Three installers,led by a master carpenter, worked about 8 hours removing sidings, studs, and drywall and installing a header. I will call them RAJ with each letter for each team members first name. RAJ did a fantastic job after the door was installed, that I only have some minor exterior painting. The interior drywall did not need painting. RAJ even installed a switch and outside light. I felt compelled to come on here and write a review for RLS Construction as they have recently completed a remodel of our home here in Fair Oaks. My wife and I debated for almost two years on how and when we would get the project going. We knew that we wanted to do a lot to the home, but had no direction on design and a tight budget to get it done with...in comes Bob! From the first meeting that we had with him, Bob was great to work with. He actually listened to us and what we wanted. We went over our ideas with him and he shared some of his own. We told him what our budget was and 2 days later he had a structural engineer over to see if our plans would be possible within our budget. Bob wrote up our quote, within our budget, and actually got the work done--all of it--that we had under our contract within our budget as quoted! We did end up adding things that were not initially discussed that ended up adding to our cost, which is to be expected, but everything under our initial contract was done at the agreed upon price. Thank you for that Bob! A couple of things I also feel like I need to mention, because these things are important to me and may be important to others: RLS Contruction has a great team of people that actually care about the work they are doing and take pride in their work. Our project was almost 8 weeks long and there was never a single day that we didnt know what was going on-communication was excellent. We always knew who was coming and what they would be working on. There was someone here working at 8am, 5 days a week, for the entire duration of the project. The team also made sure to leave our home spotless at the end of each day, this was important since we have 3 year old twins that get into absolutely everything. We didn't have to worry or stress, great care was taken by Bob's team to ensure that the home was safe for our little ones. We love the job that RLS Construction did in our home, they tore out or stair case and rebuilt it to have a better flow, opened up our kitchen and completely changed the layout, new cabinets, paint throughout, new flooring throughout our entire home, I would recommend them to anyone. I've waited to leave this review so that I'm not writing it while angry. We've hired RLS Construction to renovate our small master bathroom. We have hired numerous contractors before but this has been the most frustrating experience mostly because there was only one person on the job who actually tried to do things the right way (thank you James). To summarize: - installed chipped tile - installed crookedly cut metal trim - when replacing chipped tiles, could not match the grout color making a visible swatch of dark grout in the middle of the light grout wall (twice) - small tiles were buried under grout/joint compound - nicked the staircase - scratched paint off a wall that wasn't even in the bathroom - got grout/some other dirt on a curtain (that I could not wash out) - left gaping holes in the grout, I could see the backing board behind the tiles - installed easy to replace bathroom fan but not the one that required actual work - uneven drywall - an area of the shower that was left ungrouted at all - gaslighted me with a surprise charge I didn't agree to and then guilt tripped us about it About the last point - I paid for a large shower niche but when the time came to cut it out, the place where I wanted it to go had a stud. I asked how much it would cost to cut into the stud but after some thinking decided to not mess with studs and picked a different place without a stud. About a week after the niche was done, Robert told me that I owe them for the stud-removing niche. The guy who was the one cutting the niche was backing Robert even though he was there for the whole discussion about placement. I didn't mind paying extra but I was not getting the placement I wanted AND I had to pay extra? Then Robert said that they will just "not get paid for the work done". Finally one of the other man intervened on my behalf and said the same thing I said and I guess they believed him. Basically this renovation lasted almost twice as long as promised (because they had to come back to fix issues) and I had to examine everything because I could not trust them to do the job properly. Most of the things were fixed after I pointed them out except for multi-colored grout that i had to repaint myself (thank god there was the right color at Home Depot), new curtain panel I had to buy to replace the ruined one, scratched paint, and nicked stairs (scratches I found after the project was over and when I was fed up with this thing). Needless to say I can't recommend this business unless you don't care how the job is done as long as it is done. I know mistakes happen but this was just a ridiculous amount of things that went wrong. read more

We contracted with RLS Construction to complete the transition between our kitchen and dining area, repair some outdoor dry-rot issues, install some windows, and remodel our master bathroom. The RLS bid was one of the higher bids we received, but based on past experience this isn't always a bad thing. We knew we could work with Bob Stubblefield after just a few interactions. We reviewed his work in his personal portfolio which he presented to us, and we scanned his Yelp reviews along with the Yelp reviews of other companies that provided bids. Approachability 5/5 I contacted Bob; he got back to me promptly within a couple of hours and was ready to schedule a bid that day. Upon arrival, he was respectful, clear about mutual expectations, and patient with our questions. Bob's affability and quiet confidence put us at ease throughout the remodel. Other contractors we took bids from instilled no confidence, were unable to respond within a reasonable time, or had an off-putting, arrogant demeanor that would never work for us. We had a friendly, professional and respectful engagement with Bob throughout the project, and his staff reflected the same attitude. I'm now confident that I know a good contractor in the future. Communication 4/5 With the exception of a couple days where we weren't clear who or what was scheduled, Bob and his crew were good communicators. Bob got back to us pretty quick - always within 48 hours. I never really texted him with a major crisis, but the times I needed an answer he didn't leave me hanging. This is helpful when you are wandering around a place like Floor and Décor trying to figure out the difference between types of schluter trim or floor tile or how much grout to purchase. Bob's protégé, Jake, and Steve, his experienced tile specialist, were also good communicators. Multiple times they double checked with us before making a crucial decision, and they also offered great advice. With rapport established, we trusted each other. Trust goes a long way when people come disrupt the regular routine of your home. Again, the only flaw was that sometimes we didn't know who or when someone was coming, or we found out they were coming at the last second. Work Ethic 5/5 RLS workers and subcontractors arrived on time and worked steadily. "Clean up is part of the job" and Bob's crew cleaned up daily before departing. Also, they always had organized work spaces. People who are being paid (a lot) for their time spend less of it looking for misplaced items when they are organized. By the end of each day tools and materials were secured again and ready to be accessed the next morning. Messes were kept to a minimum, drop cloths were secured, and dust, loose pieces of cut wood, wire and other debris was always swept and cleared. This was VERY important to us, and was done without being asked. We weren't stepping on loose screws, nails or staples. Additionally, Bob's workers were on task; we didn't notice anyone standing around, pretending to look busy or messing with their phone. Even Zeke, the low-man apprentice was always busy cleaning up, moving debris, painting, or learning something. About the only mishap was that somebody cleaned out some spackle or something out on the grass and it turned all white and crusty, but it washed out with the hose; the area is completely back to normal now. At any job screw-ups happen - but they shouldn't happen often. Work Quality 5/5 You ever notice someone rushing a job and cutting corners so they can move on to the next job, and they don't take the time to think or get things right? That didn't happen here. At no time did Bob dump some inexperienced guy on us. For the main job, our bathroom, he brought in an expert, Steve, who was patient, strategic, orderly and creative. Not only did Steve bust his butt from start to finish, he absolutely knew what he was doing and he plotted his job out step by step. The other indispensable team member was Jake. Jake is young and multi-skilled - he is like Bob's utility man. These two fixed minor issues that came up without being asked; if we noticed something nitpicky, they didn't get aggravated - they just sorted it. Bob sorted stuff out himself too. He checked in on the job regularly and made sure things went right- if they weren't, he made sure they were corrected even if he had to do it himself. Follow Up 5/5 So far few follow ups. There were some switches that needed to be to code and we had to wait for those, and there is a slight shower adjustment. In my estimation, RLS Construction adheres to the old John Wooden quote, "if you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?" RLS Construction completed the work we agreed to, and have addressed the few minor issues so far. A month has passed with no major issues; however, if we do have a major issue, I am confident they will fix it. Overall Score 19/20 Our experience was excellent. We also had white tile floor removed and vinyl plank flooring installed, plus vanity and sink replaced. RLS personnel were on the job every week day except one because we were waiting for materials to arrive (not their fault). The job took 11 work days without shower doors (RLS supplies a glass company name for those). RLS construction did a total demolition and remodel on my bath. I had 2 small baths, I wanted one large bath. RLS provided me with a large totally walk in shower. Shower is done in Travertine tile, slide bar for shower head on the wall and a overhead rain drop fixture. Shower also has a bench. They put in a nice state of the art vanity, soft close doors and drawers. New lighting and imperfect texture. You have to remember they also had to reposition the drains. Very professional. Bob and Tony have an eye for perfection. I would recommend RLS construction for any new construction or any remodeling to be done. The work that Bob and his team completed in our home looks really nice, and it was done in a timely manner. A few issues came up that were addressed quickly - which we appreciated. The main issue for us was the permitting of the work to our home. Bob ensured us that our project would not require a permit, however, it did, which we discovered. Bob addressed the permit after we brought it to his attention. However, when the city inspector came by for the final inspection, they alerted us that nobody had been by the project to check the work along the way, as is expected. The inspector was surprised by the lack of detail in the drawing that they usually see from contractors. They ended up signing off on the project though there were no notes from inspections along the way and therefore no way to confirm what was actually done to the house aside from what I was able to describe based on what I knew from check-ins with Bob and his team. Because of RLS Construction's avoidance of working with the city permit, we really questioned the integrity of the company, therefore ended up calling a structural engineer to double check the work and give us a written report that confirmed there are no safety issues. Though the house updates are lovely, the amount of added stress and extra work we experienced as a result of the permit issues from start to finish is why we are leaving a 3-star review. read more

We hired Bob to help with a external leak we were having during the harsh winter storms. We had had several professionals advise us to hire a contractor to seal the outside of the house. Work Quality: 5 stars Excellent! Bob quickly determined that our stucco had not been sealed in probably decades, and also gave us a quote for any additional dryrot work that needed to be done. The house was sealed and painted beautifully. Workers: 5 stars Very professional! The painter, Johnny, and his crew were amazing to work with. We were always informed when workers would be on the job. So refreshing to have a contractor who is willing to listen and explain! Price: 4+ stars Not sure how to rate this one. After seeing his attention to detail, easy-going nature, and honest assessment of what I needed, we did another project, then another, and then another. After a couple of attempts to correct an issue with water intrusion coming in through our kitchen window, my boyfriend and I decided to just hire someone to tear apart the front of our house and put it back together correctly to eliminate the chance of water finding its way in. It was refreshing to have someone point out the flaws they saw just from the initial meeting and truly seem to have knowledge of what they were talking about. The communication was excellent through the few days it took to demo and rebuild a good chunk of the exterior of our home. We weren't able to take time off work to be present while the work was done, but it was refreshing to receive photos and updates along the way. This is the first time I've ever written a review for a company that didn't actually do any work for us. Here are the reasons why I feel compelled to write a review: Bob insisted that my husband be present when he came to look at the job and give us an estimate, even though I told him I'm always the designated "project manager" for home repair jobs. When he stopped by (he was very punctual), he addressed his remarks primarily to my husband, as if I wasn't even there. After he got the particulars on what we wanted done, he pulled up a power point presentation on his laptop about a child in (I think) Ethiopia that he was sponsoring, or maybe his church was sponsoring. I don't remember. All I remember is the fact that this had NOTHING to do with giving us an estimate for a job! I still have no idea why he did that. Maybe he wanted to show us what a good Christian he is? Anyway, when all was said and done, he scratched out "rebuild shelves" on a piece of paper (not even with the company name on it) with an absurd price that was more than 3X higher than the next highest bid. There was no breakdown of how he arrived at that price If the job was too small for his company to bother with, all he had to do was say so. I absolutely recommend RLS Construction. I called them in a last minute bind, and they were able to start my kitchen remodel a few days later (and some other odds-and-ends like drywall repair and window replacement). Prices are middle of the road, not cheap but not too expensive, but they're very reliable so it's worth it and they do everything as general contractors.
