Awesome experience from start to finish. Had to have a chimney and fireplace removed due to a leak (and because it looked ugly af) and Caldwell did an excellent job. Estimate was very fair and what I really appreciated is that they delivered on their promises. I never once felt like there was going to be a catch or an upsell. I genuinely enjoyed getting to know everyone that came to do the work and they were extremely professional. For an invasive job such as this they did a great job minimizing the disruption. Clean up afterwards was really thorough. If (IF) I was to find any flaw in the experience it would be that communication was not 100% perfect throughout, but it was really nothing major at all. They manage big projects all the time and I just had to learn to relax and trust that they knew what they were doing. The quality of their work was top notch and in the end they made a big (ger) job go as smooth as possible. We hired Caldwell Construction because they are a local neighborhood company and presented themselves as efficient, fairly priced, and well organized. Those qualities were the most important to us when selecting a contractor. Unfortunately, our experience did not reflect those expectations. The timeline and budget ultimately ended up more than double the original estimate and is still incomplete. The project often felt poorly coordinated, with workers frequently moved between job sites and multiple people finishing work that someone else had started. Many of the employees themselves were kind, respectful, and clearly doing their best. However, they often appeared to be working with very little leadership or planning. At times workers were completing tasks outside their normal scope of expertise, which led to inconsistencies and rework. Communication and project management were also ongoing concerns. We were never provided with a clear finishes budget or consistent guidance when sourcing materials. There were several instances where the approved plans were not followed. The kitchen height was built incorrectly and cabinets had to be reordered at our expense. The island was initially placed incorrectly and had to be moved weeks later, also at our expense. Our front door was measured incorrectly and had to be reordered. Lights were installed incorrectly (size/location). Our working relationship with the owner, William Caldwell, was challenging at best. Communication fequently felt dismissive and condescending. Although I was actively managing the project and making many of the design decisions, William often declined to communicate directly with me and instead insisted on working only through my husband. William threatened multiple times to walk away from the project and ultimately did leave before the work was completed. We hope William Caldwell and Caldwell Construction acknowledge these issues and use this experience to improve how they serve future clients. read more

I specifically told him I was going to rent out my house and that I wanted everything done before the tenants moved in. Once I hired them it all went downhill. The morning that his crew was picking up materials to build my deck I sent him a picture of the design I wanted and we previously discussed. Once I got home the design was the opposite of what I wanted. I brought it to his attention and he didn't even apologize for neglecting to communicate to his crew. Everyone on his crew is really nice and incredibly talented. Sadly, everyone on his crew apologized except for him and he is the one who dropped the ball. We have used Caldwell for multiple projects over many years from small to large. We have had Caldewell fix a leak in our bathroom. They only demo/took apart what they needed to diagnose a problem and then the fix is specific to what is needed, no up-selling or pressure to move forward. The leak was fixed that day and they did a great job with the drywall patching and matching the finish to the existing wall. When we had water leaking in our garage, while some companies said they need to take apart the wall and x dollars per hour, Caldwell was the only ones that said, let's wait, and narrow down the source of the issue. They did a water test to narrow down the issue before proceeding. Overtime, this led to a major job. We had two new windows, a lot of dry rot repair and re-stucco our house over a 2 month period. After the quote, they told us to take our time (quote was valid for 30 days and included a smaller and larger scale of the project based on our budget) and we had the time and space to get other quotes. They were responsive when we had follow up questions. Throughout the work, they were quick to reply to text messages/phone calls, and have regular check-in's throughout. If I ever sent questions, I would get a call or visit the next day to discuss any questions. On Nextdoor when people ask for a contractor, I always see Caldewell getting mentioned, and we will continue to use them in the future, hopefully, for more fun projects like a kitchen remodel rather than fixing leaks and rot. read more

I do not recommend using this contractor. They will make serious mistakes (to be clear, our expectations are not that mistakes won't ever be made, but simply that someone owns up to them) and try to hide them from you. Terrible communication, combined with extremely low quality work on basic things. Completely unethical owner that constantly tries to make it seem like you are the problem. Broke things in our home and tried to hide it from us, while we tried to figure out what happened. Hires unqualified workers and doesn't supervise their work. Had to hire multiple companies to fix the project so we could pass inspection and actually get a functioning kitchen. Stay away from them unless you want a nightmare! If you do hire them, double check ALL of their work because it will not be as it seems (check your roof, under the house, etc.). Trust me, you are signing up for problems while they do the project or after they leave. Project took more than double the promised time, not because they are slow, but because they had to do everything twice or three times to get it right. Feel free to message me for pics/details. This was definitely a learning experience as I had to learn along the way - and learn I did. Everything you need to know is available on the CA State Contractors License Board website - for the company and the customer. Credit where credit is due: William came out and provided a quote for both bathrooms in Sept 2024. He was really nice and personable, we also liked the idea of supporting a local business. William honored the original quote when I reached out in March/April; project started in early June 2025. We ended up only doing the master bathroom (cue water damage repair). Overall, this project took about a month. The first two workers to show up, Danny and the plumber (Chris?), were awesome. They communicated arrival times, laid down paper to avoid making a mess, cleaned up their trash at the end of every day. They were around for about a week and a half. The issues we experienced were: no clear communication about arrival/departure times for subsequent workers, leaving our gate open - which is a problem when no one tells you they're done for the day and they are leaving equipment/materials in the backyard, no communication when the water would be turned off (there was always someone home during the project), constant "runs" to Home Depot for materials delaying daily start times (with no communication), asking repeatedly for receipts so we could see the materials purchased (included in the estimate), workers left a bag of trash (including food from lunch) in the middle of the bedroom, none of the subsequent workers cleaned up the worksite at the end of their day, they piled all of the removed house materials in our backyard - moldy framing and floorboards included (when the weather was hot and dry), while the project manager and I were in the bedroom discussing the remodel - the electrician started to use the bed as a work table instead of going outside where the equipment was set up, the tile guys left our water hose running when they left (without saying they were done for the day), the receipts showed the purchase of a table saw blade and work gloves (items not considered materials - but their work equipment). Even though I communicated with the Project Manager about the issues with the work/workers and the Office regarding billing and receipts; if I hadn't we would have paid more than the contracted estimate without a proper change order. Every week they wanted a progress payment but failed to provide the receipts I requested or project progress. The end result was almost $500 over the materials estimate. The expectation of a change order and payment at the end of the project was unrealistic. Proper accounting would have kept track of the materials and communicated the overage with options to choose how to move forward. Accounting said, as a courtesy the final invoice would be adjusted. It was not a courtesy, it was poor accounting and not something we were going to pay. Finally, there was a list of items that needed to be addressed before completion. This was communicated via email and text. We were asked for final payment before these items were completed, so we withheld the final payment until the items were addressed. There's one worker, name starts with an "N", he's literally milking this company and delaying completion. He spent an entire day addressing the final items, but only completed one and not very well. I wish others and Caldwell best of luck, but I would not recommend them. read more

In both projects, their team discussed any decisions points with us to make sure they were meeting our expectations. We gathered quotes for both projects from multiple vendors and Caldwell was our choice. One Caldwell quote was a little higher, but William the owner explained to us how the demo of the hearth would require extra time and effort, which neither of the other two vendors mentioned. It would have definitely been a change request with both the others. William's knowledge and experience helped us avoid that headache, and the situation with the hearth was exactly as he described. I cannot say enough about this construction company. We did a remodel inside and out (complete kitchen remodel, bathroom, flooring throughout, tankless water heater, doors, electric panel, exterior siding, painting) and Caldwell Construction handled everything end to end. I'll hit you with some of the highlights: When they said they'd be there, they were there, rain or shine even when we lost power. Our estimate was what we paid. When the crew found additional issues, they called them to our attention and offered complete repair or patch depending on the issue. Change orders were clear and easy to understand. The office team kept very close track on all materials purchased and offered review whenever we asked. Progress payments were due weekly and we knew exactly where our money was going. The crew was courteous and would periodically stop to review work done with us. This made it easy to understand the effort and time each portion of the project would take. I waited a year to leave this review. I didn't want to leave an emotional review immediately after they were done. I hired Caldwell to remodel my bathroom in Tahoe Park. We chose him because they seemed like a small family business from the area. I won't go into every single detail, but they started the project late. They took longer than planned, to include seven full days of no work being done mid-project. When I called to tell William I wouldn't be paying him a progress payment because he was three weeks behind schedule he became very annoyed and stated, "I currently have 12 bathroom remodels in progress, it's busy." Which is a great way of making the customer feel unimportant. He continued, "if you don't make a progress payment, I'll have to go into my personal savings to pay my workers" which was clearly a move to pressure me into making a payment out of guilt, because if he truly had 12 bathroom remodels ongoing, he had money coming in. In the same conversation he told me he had a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar job at an apartment complex that was taking up a lot of their time. It was the anthesis of professionalism. After that conversation, I felt like my job was being rushed and the work became even more sloppy. He had a guy, who was very nice, cut and lay my decorative tiles on the floor. The guy admitted to us, "I'm not a tile guy" and it really showed. He was a very friendly guy, and with help will probably be a great tile guy, but I don't want him practicing on my floor. Every single day I walk into my bathroom, I'm reminded that there are HUGE gaps in my floor, the tile is uneven and Caldwell came over when I complained and said, "no, I think he did a great job, the natural characteristics of tile make this really hard to do." He said it with a straight face. I'm not a perfectionist, but this company and their acceptable work is HARDLY better than a DIY job. He does a final walk thru, once you complain enough, where I point out at least 20 deficiencies, and he makes a list of what he thinks are things worth of repair. He then says, "I'll send someone over tomorrow and it'll all be fixed in two hours." They come over, spent about 90 minutes before getting a call from their boss, Caldwell, that it's time to move on to another project. I'm going to be honest, if they had two weeks to fix it, I just don't think it's within their capabilities of making things look nice. I'm not even looking for perfection, I'm looking for nice/acceptable. I complained again, he sent someone over again. William Caldwell became very frustrated and annoyed every time I asked him to fix glaring issues, like a big sharpie line (from floor to ceiling) left on the wall after they were done, or a huge gap between my wall and sink top where caulking was done poorly, or a poorly painted wall. Mind you, I had given up on my tile or bathroom looking remotely good and just wanted it done. The only reason they continued to answer calls was because I was withholding a final payment of $1500 or thereabouts. In conclusion, I wouldn't hire this company again or advise anyone to hire this company for interior remodeling. I'm sure they can probably replace a fence or something, but I wouldn't pay them a penny to do a single thing after this experience. Only positive thing to say was that the individual employees, aside from the owner, were all very very nice and thoughtful. The actual professional tilers they work with (Jeff/Cyle), when they eventually showed up, did a good job. Honestly, just don't do it. I have no idea how these dudes are so well reviewed on here. In the end I felt like I wasted $17,000 because they never fixed even the minor complaints I had. To finish the job, William sent over an employee to collect the withheld payment because he was too busy for a third "final" walkthrough of my 30sqft bathroom. Quick disclaimer, I've owned multiple houses in the Sacramento area and have done several remodels with contractors and myself, I'm a reasonable human looking for nice and professional, not perfect. read more

I recently had water leaking into an electrical outlet in my home. I sent a picture of the damage it was causing to Caldwell construction. William, the owner of the company, saw the picture on his phone while he was conducting a site visit. He immediately flagged my issue as top priority and grabbed his top electrician and plumber and was at my home in about 20 minutes! I didn't realize how dangerous the problem was but William did! I hired Caldwell to tear out to stud and redo my main bathroom. My bathroom was in bad shape: the plumbing was done incorrectly, the floor was rotting, the tile grout was coming out in chunks - my bathroom needed a lot of work. William came out on time, gave me a verbal quote on the spot, and followed it up with a detailed written quote. The price was reasonable and well within my price range. We set up a time to start and were given a timeframe when the job would be done. His staff showed up on time, were polite, and answered all my questions and concerns when I had them. They were respectful of the rest of my house and made sure to clean up after themselves when leaving. The job was done within the timeframe given. The end result is gorgeous! We have an awkwardly narrow fridge space and wanted to gain enough space to open our fridge door. We asked for ideas on what to do and they came up with the perfect solution. They removed the thick plaster wall board and replaced it with thinner drywall. Now the fridge opens no problem. They did a great job blending it so you can't tell. We recently remodeled our house with CC It involved relocation and remodel of both bathrooms,Contruction of a new hallway, and Re-plumbing of the entire house. This was an ambitious project to say the least the project took about 3 months we had to move out to a rental for at least 2 months. NOW. I'm not going to go on and on about Miss communication between the contractor and client or the lil disputes and differences of opinion about what needed to be completed by what time. There never was a dispute that I felt warranted being mentioned in this review. William And all the workers were courteous and friendly and would ALWAYS correct any mistakes or miscommunication that arose. They aimed to please and they followed through. I have worked with Caldwell Construction on a couple of projects on my Midtown high water bungalow. The first was repairing siding and eaves ahead of repainting. The estimate was thorough with all details explained, and the work teams were timely and provided a high quality result. The second project involved replacing old knob-and-tube and updating electrical, as well as replacing the roof. Coordination with the subcontractors performing the work was excellent, and I had good interactions with all involved.
