Every once in a while I go on a low-carb kick. Then, eventually, after spending countless hours awake dreaming of a big bowl of pasta, bread and potatoes, I finally break down and end up at a place like Rigatoni's with the sole purpose of stuffing my face with as many carbs in one sitting as possible.
Well, the craving hit me again recently, and when it does, I don't want a salad, a wrap, or some sad, warmed-up microwave meal that I eat hunched over at my desk. I needed CARBS, my friend. And a big old pile of them!
I lucked out, and a co-worker suggested we go to Rigatoni's for lunch, and I was anxious to see how this place measured up.
On the inside, the place kinda looks like offspring of an Olive Garden and a Panda Express. The food is Italian (well, at least as close to Italian as you can get during a lunch break), and you order what you want at a counter. You pay, get a number, and find a seat as you wait to be served.
I ordered the Chicken Parmesan - for a couple reasons. First off, it's a classic. It's done everywhere. And I figured it would provide a decent baseline by which to make reasonable assumptions about their other dishes. I ordered an iced tea, as well, and was somewhat startled when my bill came to $13 dolllars and change. "Hmm," I thought. "This has better be some pretty good pasta."
I made my way to a table after getting some soda. One of the nice things is that you are able to visit the 'bread bar', which is basically a few types of bread available with butter. It's a nice touch, even though the real verdict is made based on the food.
The chicken parm arrived fairly quickly, which was nice. It was served with some rigatoni, tossed in a light creamy white sauce. The chicken was browned nicely on the edges, and covered in marinara and cheese. Perhaps this would hit the spot after all.
The chicken was well done and tasty, but the pasta was kind of bland and needing some seasoning and parmesan cheese. This is not a huge deal, but this IS supposed to be a quasi-Italian place, so their pasta should be the real star of the show, which it wasn't. It did do a reasonable job in a supporting role, however.
Still, it satisfied my carb craving, filled me up, and is conveniently located near where I work. The service was quick and it's a welcome respite from the endless sandwiches and fast food options that tend to dominate mid-day fare. A tad pricey, but good when you want something a little different from the norm.
In short, I expect I'll visit Rigatoni's again sometime soon. Maybe I'll try something else. Maybe not. It will all depend upon what kind of carb fix I need... read more
