I also wanted to highlight their deli as we like to get their sandwiches and salads for lunch. This is the greatest grocery of its kind. I don't know if it's the only one or not. The focus is on quality, sustainability, and carefully selected varieties. I couldn't find molasses anywhere except for here, where there were 2 varieties at least. Lipton purebrew tea, in raspberry and lemon (only find unsweetened and sweet tea at other stores). Want pliny the elder beer? Then this is the place. They have a selection of belgium ales, and many other types of beers- very impressive! The Deli has a really nice olive bar and many other offerings. The meat and seafood are offers some of the best cuts of meats around. The seafood section has beautiful selections including sushi grade choices. It seems everything is very carefully selected in a way that this smaller grocery store often has the items hard to find in the mainstream groceries. I just had to stop in town to charge my car and I'm so happy I picked the charger in the parking lot of Gene's Fine Foods. I walked in just expecting any other grocery store but I was wildly impressed with the quality and selection of foods. It reminded me of the quality of Nugget Market foods. I got the egg salad for myself and I finished it within one minute it was so good. And the prices were extremely fair and not as expensive as I thought they would be given the quality. And the customer service was phenomenal, I wish I got their names but a kind lady with red hair helped me at the food and the check out girl with long blonde hair were so kind and lovely. read more

Gene's used be my goto for sandwiches. Since I moved out of the area I haven't been back. Today was the day for a delicious sandwich I was back in town. They were busy as usual. Now my turn and I tell the lady salami and cheddar on Dutch Crunch everything extra mustard. She asks if I want sliced or roll, I replied roll (which I did think was a weird question, since Dutch crunch is a roll). I receive the sandwich and drive back to the office. I open the packaging and no Dutch crunch regular white roll. Not what I wanted and couldn't go back. Besides that issue she put a ton of pepper's, I asked for extra mustard not added. And only 1 piece of cheese. Normally these sandwiches are on point. The best thing about today was it only cost $9.99. read more

I stopped in to pick up two sandwiches. The Smokehouse and Turkey Pastrami. Mo was making my sandwiches. She asked how I wanted them, and I asked her to make them how she thought they were best. The smokehouse she prepared cold and the Pastrami was warm. She also said they would be the best sandwiches I had ever had haha. She was not lying. They were fantastic! Also they were HUGE for $13. Gene's Fine Foods is my go-to local foodie. The employees at Gene's are all the friendliest. As I'm elderly, I haven't even attempted to remember the food locations in each aisle. Fortunately there's an employee in almost every other aisle who'll direct me to the appropriate aisle and shelf. Another Plus + is that checkout lanes flow very quickly. When a checkout lane has two or three customers merely awaiting checkout; another checkout lane opens as if by magic. Consider ordering a made-to-order to-go sandwich from a wide choice of meats, cheeses, breads and/or rolls. I purchase one at the start of each visit; then I go about my shopping while the sandwich is being prepared. The sandwich is ready when I am ready to check out. OH! The best market I have ever been to. Recently, the place that we got most of our meat closed in this area. I was really hoping we could find something even half as good. Well, a friend recommended Gene's Fine Foods. It was not just half as good. It was much better. It was the best meat I ever had, and I have had a lot. The beef was the best. The pork was even better than the famous Iberico pork from Spain. The chicken was so much better than the chicken in every other source we have tried in the last twenty years that I cannot do it justice. As a special treat for Fathers day, I got a prime rib roast, graded prime. The best piece of meat I tasted in my entire life. And the meat department had real butchers. Skilled butchers. Butchers who could really cut meat to order, and knew their craft. Most stores do not have even a single butcher of this caliber. Gene's has several. Every single one of them was an expert who took pride in their skill and their work. And they were friendly and enthsiastic. I felt like I had stepped into a time machine and traveled back to the twentieth century. In out first three trips, we bought a lot of meat. Every single piece of meat was superb. And by superb, I mean better than any meat we had bought elsewhere. Ever. And the produce was also amazing. These days, it is hard to buy a bag of russet potatoes that does not have a few bad ones in the bag. But every one of the potatoes was perfect. And delicious. And the sevice, from everyone in the store, is great. Everyone we talked to knew their job, and was friendly and helpful. We felt so comfortable there. And parking has been plentiful and easy. Right now, we have no desire to use any other grocery store. My heartfelt thanks to the manager and the employees at this store, who have created something really special. read more

For a while I was really enjoying the sandwiches from here. But starting earlier this year I noticed it was not as good as once was and also my stomach noticed it as well. I had a few in a row that was not so great so I decided to take a break. Had one yesterday and still the same. Sadly I need to find another place. One other thing I was disapointed about was they stopped carrying an Almond oil that seemed I was the only one buying and was from Fresh Vintage Farms. One of favorite grocery store that sells locally sourced produce! Staff are friendly and always ready to help. The place is clean and neat. We especially love their European cookies, goodies & cakes during the holidays! They have a great gourmet, Organic and plant based selection. Their butcher shop is definately the best in the area. Came here for fine cheese and was approached 3 times by the staff asking if I needed help, each one higher in succession for their specialty. I had an description of the cheese and the staff came out from behind the counter and was personally guided to where I should be. They went further inquiring me for information regarding what I was looking for and that was very pleasant to get the kind of help that goes above and beyond getting me to where /what I was looking for. And because I didn't know exactly what it was I was looking for (brand, source, type of cheese I was looking for), I bought a few items to try because they had over 400 selections to choose from. I've been frequenting Gene's for over five years now so I thought I'd update my review. Between after work grocery browsing pre-pandemic, to the best pandemic-era grocery experience (spacious aisles, clean), we now make a special trip here from Fremont as I don't work in Ptown anymore. Some updates from my previous review: - BREADS: They now have Acme and several other brands on their endcap. Fantastic quality and very fresh. - BEER: Not only is there still a fantastic selection of Russian River, but there are many other microbrews including my favorite, Original Pattern - MILK: Increased selection from 5 years ago, large variety of small/smaller dairies such as Alexandre/Straus EGGS: They now have Vital Farms as well as a few other super-local egg brands including Rose Ranch Farm (local to Livermore) MEAT/DELI/CHEESE: Great variety including Cowgirl, pre-made charcuterie items, and unique options you can't find at most other places. Molinari salami! Simply the ONLY salami one should get, in my opinion. As for meat, they always have a beautiful dry aged ribeye for a special occasion. Yum!! SNACKS: Don't sleep on the tortilla chips by the bread end cap that are super thin and salty. I can just eat a whole bag with some salsa fresca! COFFEE/TEA: A huge selection of local/micro roastery options! PRODUCE: Huge produce section that has very fresh items, many organic, local items such as Brentwood corn and peaches. BOOZE: Lots of variety for a grocery store--many smaller makers featured. DESSERTS: Ice cream! Marianne's has a whole section. Hard to choose just one! FROZEN: Boichik Bagels. The ONLY place around that carries them on this side of the Bay. SPECIALTY: British section, international, fancy bronze-die cast pasta, and the list goes on. A good place to go to build a care package for someone as a treat. While I would love to see Food Mill Peanut Butter return to the shelf, this is still my favorite grocery store around. My 3 star review is for their produce department. I have shopped here for years for their fish and have been unsatisfied with their lack of fresh produce and selection. I typically go to Safeway after or before for produce. In contrast I recently shopped at Piazza's Fine Foods in Palo Alto while shopping with my mom. Their produce department was amazing with a broad selection with freshness in all the produce. I hope Genes does better in the future. read more

I wish they were like Lunardis in Danville but they don't have many fine foods available. They could add more imported selection of deli meats such as Cotto prosciutto or slow cooked ham. Imported products from France and Italy have less toxic ingredients. Sandwiches are the worst I had. The meat department needs to listen to customers and improve. The meat looks awful and brownish sometimes. Some people on Yelp complaint about the fish freshness. They could also offer deboned whole chicken as special order. I think they stopped in time and definitely don't listen to their clients. read more

The Russian River flows like water here. Being from the Los Angeles area it can be pretty challenging to get Piney the Elder. Only Whole Foods seems to have a steady supply and sometimes it's hit or miss. As for the fine foods of Gean's is the complete opposite. Abundant supply of this fine nectar keeps me coming back. Also the pricing is fairly reasonable, most places charge 8.99 per bottle These guys keep it real at 5.99 They also have a decent selection of other micro beers if you're into that, give it a try you won't be disappointed. read more

I really like going here for a special occasion dinner. We went here because we wanted to grill something for Super Bowl and the butcher shop is awesome. There's something about small, local markets that always appeal to me. There aren't really any like that where I live and I have to trek out to Pleasanton to get that. Not going to lie, this place it pricey, but the quality is very good. So many local goodies to choose from! We ended up picking up some beef and lamb kabobs. You can get marinated beef, lamb, fish or chicken. If you prefer to season it yourself, they have that too. The quality is very good, it also helped that someone didn't cue them into hockey pucks. The deli has a variety of salads to choose from. On this visit, I went with the caprese salad. Just to be a little extra, they had this charcuterie pack that went great with my wine. Speaking of local vendors, Salt Craft sells their bread and baked here. We had to make a decision between a mini-Beckman's pie or Salt Craft's Lemon Blackberry muffins. The muffins were a hit, but the olive sourdough was not our thing. Surprisingly, there's random things like Sees Candies in case you want to get a gift or have a chocolate craving. Not a bad idea for the last minute Valentine's Day shopper. Great wine selection, sometimes it's fun just to browse. read more

Stopped in this lovely market when I was in the area. We weren't there to shop - just get sandwiches from the deli. They have a variety of choices including building your own, but I opted for the Peppermill sandwich which had peppered turkey, bacon, cheese, and cole slaw. I got it on their dutch crunch roll. It was a massive sandwich, fresh and delicious. While I was waiting for it to be made, I also looked around their cheese section and saw they had samples. Really good selection. We moved away from P'ton 40 some years ago and are now driving extra miles to shop here again. Since then, they have picked up some things we have begun to enjoy like, Stonehenge bakery items, Acme Bread, Oakland Dust Spices, See's Candy, Loads of Local Wine, Great Variety of meat and vegetables. Just too many delicious items to mention. I do have to mention though, they have the friendliest bunch of employees working there and we really like that. Very cute little grocery store! I came here because I heard they had a great deli & butcher section. I was really impressed by both departments. The butcher area had so many options! In addition to the meat case, they also have a lot of pre-packaged items across the aisle. I purchased some sausage and chicken, they both were great. The deli section was also excellent. I usually am not interested in the pre-made items from deli cases, but their selection looked really good. I did order the mesquite sandwich was good. The bread was alright, but the spicy sauce and the rest of the fillings were tasty, and the sandwich was quite big. They had a decent produce and cheese section. I browsed a little bit through the aisles and it looked like they carry popular brands along with more local/artisan items. The wine selection was smaller than I expected. The imported section is just a small little column on the end of the aisle. It looks like they mainly stock California wines, and I did find a couple that I enjoyed. I'll be back! read more
