I shop at this Safeway regularly and often use the floral department. Today, after waiting 5-10 minutes with no employee in sight, another customer and I trimmed the ends of our flowers while we waited. When the employee finally arrived, she said, "Don't ever do that." I apologized and explained we were in a rush. She replied, "That's not my problem," and then told me, "Patience is a virtue." I've seen this employee many times, and she's usually unfriendly, but today her behavior crossed the line. I reported the incident to the store manager because no customer should be spoken to that way. read more

Safeway has stopped providing paper bags with handles. The paper bags without handles are very difficult to use especially for seniors who have to carry their groceries from the car to the house. We will take our business to the store down the road that does provide bags with handles. They were delighted to hear that they had won our business. Really poor decision Safeway. I shop at this store because it is near my home and I like the lay out and their selections. However, they NEVER have baggers. This is the only store that never has baggers. All other Safeways' do, so does Lucky and any other grocery store in town. When you ask them to call a bagger, they just tell you that there aren't any, they can't find help, or when they hire, no one shows up. I don't mind bagging if I have a small cart, but today I had a full large cart. Their prices are high enough to hire baggers, the management at this location is cheap and puts profit above customer service. read more

I shop regularly at Safeway on Bernal Ave. in Pleasanton, and a few nights ago (11/12/24) at around 7 pm I had an unpleasant experience at the deli section. There was a woman there working behind the counter, and after asking if I needed something, I said that I wanted to order some ham. She was not particularly friendly, but not obviously enough to notice anything wrong yet. While waiting, I was browsing at the other deli meats, and after a few moments I noticed that she was just standing there with an unfriendly expression on her face, doing nothing, just staring at me, and not saying a word. She was not trying to get my attention, or communicate with me at all. She was obviously trying to be un-helpful, and made it clear that I had to initiate all communication, or else not get service at all. When I looked up and noticed her staring at me, I immediately sensed hostility from her. Since she wouldn't speak, I had to. So I repeated to her that I wanted ham. She then told me she didn't have the particular ham I wanted. I then ordered a different type of ham instead. After she finished slicing the ham, she laid the wrapped ham on the counter without looking at me once or even saying a word, and quickly turned her head and walked away. I could detect anger and hostility from her, although I didn't know why. This deli worker obviously wanted to be difficult. She never tried to talk with me unless I initiated communication first. This is TOTALLY unacceptable behavior from any supermarket employee to its customers. My appearance and behavior were normal and courteous, like it usually is whenever I'm interacting with service people. I gave her no reason to behave rudely or disrespectfully towards me. I did not get her name, but she worked there in the evening around 7 pm on the date mentioned above. I don't necessarily want her fired, but I do expect Safeway to address this problem and fix it right away. There is clearly a big problem with customer service at the Safeway location in Pleasanton (Bernal Ave.). Until then, I am giving this supermarket location a low rating. I also encourage other shoppers to post their complaints of poor behavior by service people at Safeway or anywhere else to get these businesses to clean up their act. read more

This review is for my experience at the bakery. First off, yes i admit I love Safeway birthday cake lol. It's a nostalgic thing for my family and we get it for at least 1-2 birthdays a year. It used be a simple task ordering a cake from my local Fremont Safeway but now they're ALWAYS fully booked and in general have a super rude/bad attitude and declining quality in their cakes. This location is somewhat near my work and I ordered from here once since Fremont was fully booked and the folks at the bakery department went out of their way to make a special design for my sisters birthday and it tasted SO good! Even my family members who aren't into safeway cakes loved the cake and were shocked it was from Safeway. If I can give this a 0 I would. Not because of the their product but for their services. The only reason I come to this Safeway is because it's near my work place. Usually I wait until Wednesday to do my shopping. That's when the sales start. When I'm there around 6-6:30am most of the time the meat is not ready or even if I see someone, nothing is set up. BEWARE ordering anything at the Starbucks located in this Safeway!!! My husband got FOOD POISONING. He ordered a pumpkin cold foam cold brew and a blueberry muffin on 12/17 at 9:19am. I called to let them know that they shouldn't be so careless & prevent this from happening to other customers. Sage was very rude and kept interrupting me and said, "I hear what you are saying but what exactly do you want us to do about it". To top it off, she hung up on me as I was talking. I called back and spoke to Eduardo, the Safeway store manager (since the Starbucks baristas in Safeway are considered Safeway employees). He was understanding and at least asked how husband was doing. Thats all I wanted, someone to hear my concern and make sure this doesn't happen to someone else. First, I'd like to start that I do like shopping at Safeway in Bernal. However tonight is not a so good service. Went to check out, 3 young adults or teenagers are just hanging out, and joking around while the mom is at the register who was the cashier (Christine). Christine scanned my stuff. I normally help pack my groceries. But it would have been nice at least to ackowledge the help and say thank you. This is the 4th Safeway in the neighborhood semi close to me. Of the 4, I think this one is the newest or at least feels the newest. It feels more modern, bright, and cleaner than the other ones. The cashiers seem friendlier too. This one though was more crowded but in general people were social distancing. If I'm in this part of town, I would definately stop in here again over some of the other Safeway locations. read more

Terrible customer service! I unloaded the items in my cart onto the conveyer belt and waited my turn. The cashier, Phillip, was ringing up the woman ahead of me and informed her that his register "crashed" and we would all have to move to the next checkstand. Okay, I understand that things go wrong, but he told me it was no problem . . . he would have someone help me move my items to the next checkstand. No one came to help, he moved 5 items and left me to put the other 26 items back into my cart, back up and move to the next checkstand and unload all of them again. No one was there to bag my items so I moved to the end of the counter to bag them myself. He finished scanning my items then stood there waiting for me to pay. I thought he would finish bagging the last few items while I swiped my payment card but he just stood there doing nothing. Then after I finished paying he waited until I finished bagging my items to start ringing up the next customer. Terrible service!! read more

The following review is strictly on the new, experimental Scan & Pay Check-out System recently added to many of their larger stores on a trial basis. This visit was at the fairly new Safeway Store near the entrance to the Alameda County Fairgrounds. The grocery cart looks like a typical, medium sized cart with a display screen with built-in scanner and a scale built into the bottom of the cart basket. The operation is simple and intuitive. The self-scanning procedure - named Portable Personal Shopping by its inventor Symbol Technologies - is itself straightforward. Loyalty customers use their cards to unlock the hand-held scanner from a dispenser in the store and then scan each product before putting it in the specially designed shopping cart, that can later be loaded straight into the car. If you change your mind about an item, the scanner can delete the product. The scanner keeps a running total of the bill as you go up and down the aisles and, and linked to the store's main computer, it allows shoppers to check individual prices and any available data about a product. After completing their shopping, customers return the scanner cart to a specified area and a receipt is printed and goods are paid for at a custom-made express checkout. No queues and, because of the custom-made carts require no intervention by a store clerk or other personnel, no unpacking and repacking is required and you can simply unload your purchases directly into your car, return the cart and you're done. It's neat, quick and easy to use and it is very useful if you're trying to hold to a budget since you can how much money you will spend as you shop. I have mixed feelings about this store. It's clean and they always have everything I need when I shop here. But every single time I come here they have no baggers. I come here once a week every Friday when I get off of work because it's close. Every time, no baggers. I've been coming here for like 6 months weekly. I end up bagging my own groceries which isn't a big deal. I have no problem getting my hands dirty. The problem is the younger cashiers. They won't help you even if it's like 2 items. They just stare at you as they ring up the next person like you're the one holding up their line. I had this happen to me twice so far here and again today with Rick. It is too much to have to bag your own groceries, pay and then finish bagging while they ring up the next person while make you feel like you are holding up the line. I'm almost about to go somewhere else because this is happening too frequently. read more

I have been going to this location just for the hot deli chicken every week with no issues until last week. For some odd reason the chicken tasted cold and not fully cooked and we ended up tossing it out and we also tossed out the potatoes wedges because they tasted rotten. I was able to get a hold of someone to explain the situation and they were accommodating and just told us to come back to get a refund or a new batch. We ended getting it replaced just today and the chicken was fine and tasted how they normally should but for some odd reason the potatoes wedges did not taste fresh like they served us yesterday wedges. I don't want to think they served us old potatoes wedges because we complained it didn't tasted good last time and they charged us a bit more for the difference when we just wanted the same amount that was purchased last time. So we ended up throwing away the potatoes wedges once again. I won't purchase the potatoes wedges anymore. read more

Got a racist experience at this store today. When I was at the self checkout station, the staff immediately approached me and kept looping around my back. He walked back and forth 3-4 times so I started to notice that he was stereotyping me. He even looked into my cart to see what I'm buying. When I was about to pay, he came over and dare to ask if I have paid for the ice cream that my daughter was holding or not. Apparently I DID scan everything in the cart. I confronted him and he was pretty embarrassing. My skin color is different than yours doesn't mean I will steal from you. Wake up, it's 2022!!!
