What other choices do I have that are *this* close to home when I don't plan properly? LOL! Been a customer here since 2008 and their service and staff have gone steadily downhill for at least the past 5+ years (especially after the takeover by Lucky's). At the end of the day, the cashiers are the face of the business -- I don't care if it's their first job or their second/third act - bag the dang groceries (or at least pretend to help me) even when I bring in a reusable bag, be friendly/present service with a smile (ie stop complaining), and don't act like it's a chore to do the job you chose. Every cashier I've had in the past 6 months would get a 1 or 2 star review. read more

The customer service has gone downhill at this location. Vicki a cashier is extremely rude. She never knows what produce codes to type in and refuses to bag. Just stares at people. I went into safeway on a monday afternoon, Christmas week and i had a bad experience at the deli section. This old lady told my friends and I that we were "walking around back and forth and didn't make up our mind" even though we were buying food and snacks for a movie night. We asked for plastic spoons and she didn't give us anything and had a very bad demeanor. Overall I won't comeback to this safeway because that lady is down atrocious, unless the manager does something but i doubt it. read more

One of the best Safeways around. Incredible wine selection and the store is very clean with wide aisles. Great hours. Safeways can be unpleasant. The ones in Alameda, Hayward, Castro Valley - I don't enjoy going to them. Its more a reflection of those cities than it is the store. They are crowded or deserted or older or whatever. Bottom line - just not a place I want to spend any extra time in if I don't have to. Wine selection is incredible. So many different varieties - I think they try to stock more unusual bottles or bottles that might not be available in nearby stores. There is a lot of thought put into the selection. The store is newer - remodeled not all that long ago - and is very clean. If I remember right there is some updating near the one door currently. Removing a self check out or adding one - I'm not sure. But they are improving this location and giving it attention. Some Safeways I've been to haven't had any love in 25 years still. Great hours - check yourself but 11:30pm and it was still open. There aren't that many stores that do that anymore. Alameda used to be open late - or even 24 hours? ? before the pandemic but no more. Big thanks to the police department and how this is a well run city. If all Safeways were like this one I don't think that I'd be so inclined to go out of my way to a WF as much as I do. read more

This button does not work. It works but nobody comes to assist. Light flashes and tells me someone will be there shortly. Hit the button several times with nobody coming. I left came back and hit the button a few more times so I finally had to track someone down. With fewer people working register (1 person this day) you would think they have more people for customer service support??? What's your process for areas of customer service at this store??? This Safeway has gotten even worse! It was bad, but today was horrible!! I only had a list of 10 items... I left with only four, but it took me forever to go to customer service because EVERY CLIPPED COUPON ITEM, DID NOT RING UP CORRECTLY. At the end, I was owed $12.50!!! Maybe Safeway can gouge the customers more !! And, why should a grocery store NOT have something in stock on the first day of the Ad??!! Poor enough, there were no rain checks in the store - really ???!! I was going to purchase 2 other items...one selection expired 2 MONTHS AGO, the other item I wanted to buy expired in one week- --for shelf stable foods, THAT IS RIDICULOUS !! Something is not quite right with this one. They are reluctant to accept CRV. Bad attitude on both occasions. This store is a representation of counter enviromental friendly. They are now asking plastic bottles to be bagged in 20 count per plastic bag! They said is corporate requirement? Other safeway has no such requirement. I've had several unpleasant experiences at the Deli section in this Safeway. There's a lady who works there with a very bad attitude -- she often yells at customers and seems emotionally unstable. Unfortunately, this has happened more than once. It's really uncomfortable to be treated that way when all you're trying to do is order some food. I hope the management can address this issue and improve customer service at the Deli counter. read more

Trying to do the right thing I brought bottles and cans back for refund this morning. As I have been trained by the staff there, I went to customer service with small returnables in bags of 25 and larger in bags of 10. Since no one was manning customer service I pressed the customer service button. I then waited and when no one came after the signal ended - I pressed it again. The nearest staff felt this was a faux pas and that I should just stand there like an idiot waiting after ringing it once. He said to me "We are all here. You can stand there or go outside and find the machine that now accepts returnables.". In my opinion, if they are unwilling to accept the bottles back in an efficient and courteous way they shouldn't charge the bottle fee, nor should they say they accept them back. I am not going to go to a machine to stuff bottles into it and then go back and wait in line for my money. I have a simpler solution. I just won't buy any more from them. I hear Amazon and Walmart will deliver your groceries for a lower total bill then Safeway charges. Another customer lost... wonder when they will start laying people off? read more

This store used to be so nice! It still has a great location, and three great cashiers. Monica, Ethelyn and Maria are still the best, but some of the employees are downright nasty. The woman with the face tattoos? So mean. Apparently the shoplifting has gotten outrageous, so they have locked many things up, but there is no one to open the cases, and when they do they take the items to the front, where you have to hope you can get it in under ten minutes. I'm traveling to other stores, where even if they lock up items there is a efficient system for opening them. read more

I just had the worst experience at the deli tonight. I needed to get some turkey very thinly sliced for my mother because she just had dental surgery and can't bite down on thicker pieces. I approached the counter and there was a woman behind the counter and she didn't even acknowledge me. Her name was Anne. After a few minutes I finally asked her, "Hi, are you open?". and her answer was to me was, *sort of.". i waited again and I was getting hot. So I asked her, "i'm sorry? what does sort of mean?". and she said, "i'll help you in a minute.". I asked for the turkey and she said to me, "You know there is turkey already sliced.". Miss know- it-all didn't realize i wanted it thinly sliced and those pre packages aren't thin. This woman should not be allowed to interact with the public. She is rude and condescending. read more

The deli manager wasn't too receptive of my picture and got a bit defensive but did assure me that she would contact the meat provider to figure things out. Let's see. Service is horrible. 6 check out lines, only one is open. I'm in the sole line as I have a nearly full basket. An associate or manager or lead comes up and offers the self-check out, which is busy. I asked to open up another check out, she just walked away. There were 5 people ahead of me, all with full carts. The check-out person works in one gear...SLOW !!! We pay exorbitant prices... for this? Then we have to bag our own groceries? You got to be kidding me! Is this the best you could do? Sounds like it given all the poor reviews. The only reason I used to go to this Safeway was because it was convenient. People who work there are always in a bad mood for some reason. I don't like using self check out lanes, because I believe that it takes jobs from people, but I find myself using them there because the people who work there are always unwelcoming. Obviously I cant do anything about peoples attitudes, but damn, fake a smile every once in a while. Another reason why I went to this Safeway location was to use their Western Union services. But nine times out of 10 they couldn't help me with my money transfer. Something always happened. "That person is on break." That person is on break every time I go there at different times at any given day? "The system is down." " let me call somebody to help you." No one would help me. So as of last week I stopped going to this Safeway. If you have a service and it's not available half of the time, why but "provide" that service? Or have a schedule. We used to be Safeway shareholders and are still Safeway customers. I'm usually railing about poor customer service, long check-out lines, poorly trained employees in the deli department, never ending out-of-stocks and errors between the ads, shelf tags and register prices. Today was different. I want to compliment the three Safeway employees that we had contact with who provided old fashion customer service with a smile, nevermind that most of the errors were my fault. Canned sodas were on sale, mix and match, 4 12-packs for $10, limit 4. There was a dearth of Diet flavors available to choose from on the soft drink aisle. So we made a second circuit around the store looking for side-stacks and secondary displays. While we found those, no Diet. We passed an employee who was putting away a shopping cart of wine. She greeted us as we passed by. I asked if she had anything to do with soda and she asked how she could help us. I told her about the Diet situation and she went into the back to check with someone. She came back and told us that she couldn't catch up to him because he was an extremely fast walker. I think that it may have been the Pepsi merchandiser because I saw him later pushing a six wheeler 1/2 full of soda. We thanked her and moved on. After we checked out, I always check our receipt. So many times, I have found errors that were annoying but not worth spending the time or gas to fix. Tbis time, I found errors and wasn't sure about the pricing on one item. While I was going over the receipt at the Service Desk, an employee asked if she could try to help and that her Service Desk person was on lunch. She asked me what prices were incorrect and she went to check on signage. When she came back, I told her about an item that I couldn't find. She came back with one each of two flavors. I bought both. I told her that I wasn't sure what the correct price was on some English Muffins and once again, she went to go check. The two items that were incorrectly charged were C & W Assorted Frozen Vegetables and Simply Orange Juice. There was one ad item that I could not find, Hometown Sausage, a new item. I was unsure about the pricing on some Signature Brand English Muffins. The error that I made was that when I couldn't get a good enough wi-fi signal to load the just for u coupons onto my account, I forgot to tell the checker. So, from now on, I'll load the coupons on at home, before I go to the store. On the other hand, just get rid of the need to scan coupons and make the items sale priced. Why make the customers do the work? At any rate, I apologize for not writing down everyone's name but the Store Director should make an effort fo figure out who they were and give them kudos for a job well done. We were heading to a picnic and needed to pick up some snacks to bring over. I've been a huge fan of the potato wedges at Safeway so of course we were going to get it. But before we went we headed to the fruits and veggies area to pick up some veggie platters and a fruit bowl. Although we did find what we needed, the veggies in the pack were not really great quality especially the celery. When we were going to get the wedges, there was a family waiting to be served, and there was only really one person doing the deli area outside of the one person making sandwiches and another making sushi. It felt like we were waiting for a while as well as not being acknowledged that we would be helped eventually. But eventually we did get helped and not that we were looking for super friendly help, it would've been nice to be acknowledged by ANY worker to say we'll be helped soon. We did self check out which was fairly easy. This Safeway was quite busy when we dropped by, but it is in a prominent area with a lot of residents nearby. Overall, it's a nice Safeway, clean, new-ish, but of the things we bought and service received, just wished it was a little better. But the wedges were a hit! read more

I came to this store at Dublin on our way home to Danville to pickup a soup from the open fridge section and garlic bread. When I reached I was upset to see that the soup was moldy and smelled bad when I opened it!! I called the store immediately and the lady by the name of Ciydie answered and I asked to speak to the store manager, she rudely said "err what about??" So I explained to her my situation and she said in plain tone "oh, you just have to drive to our Danville store to return it!" I started going to this store about three months ago as an alternative to the one in Santa Rita. Yesterday, it just struck me that this one is just meh. The flower selection was excellent: wide variety of flowers, well maintained flowers, reasonable prices, and outstanding customer service. Hilda - the florist - was superb! She was attentive to my request, creative and accommodating in her unique flower arrangement, and above all cared about doing a fantastic job - which she certainly did! This review is about the rude meat department clerk. I called today to inquire about whether they carried a certain item. When I was told they did carry it, the clerk refused to quote how much a pound the item was. He sarcastically said that's a Safeway policy! So, I decided to call several other Safeway stores' meat departments. Everyone of them quoted their current prices. Ordered Drive up & Go for the first time today because I am have company for dinner and needed to get the items I needed on my way home from work. I ordered it for pickup at 2PM. I received the confirmation text indicating it was ready to be picked up just before 2pm. The message stated I could pick it up anytime until 8pm. When I was on my way I let them know I even shared my location. I arrived at the store around 4pm and parked in spot 1 (there was no one else waiting) and texted the information requested regarding the spot and vehicle. I waited 28 minutes to get my order (I had to call twice). Then I tried to call the customer service center 877-505-4040, only to be frustrated by a virtual assistant finally reaching a human. I ask for confirmation to be sent to my email on file to confirm my complaint was received she indicated she could not do that. She offered me a reference code but I was driving and could not take it down, she could not text it to me. Never again! I could have shopped myself for the items I ordered in just a few minutes saving time and frustration. Safeway don't offer services you cannot support! read more

Service at the deli is horrible. There were 3 ladies working behind the counter. One saw me as I was walking towards the counter but immediately went to the back kitchen. I could tell she was avoiding eye contact. One lady had her back talking to the person who just went inside as I stood there waiting for them to help me. There was no acknowledgement or urgency to assist me. I just left as I was in a hurry to pick up my daughter from her math class. So frustrating as I really needed to buy some deli meat. Unfortunately, I've experienced this kind of service in other Safeway deli branches (Danville). For this reason, it prompted me to write a review. Since it's the Safeway, has most of the stuff you are looking for in one place. Groceries, Fruits, Alcohol, Cakes, Flowers, Cosmetics.. and this one is a pretty big location. However, one thing that stops me from going to this location or to Safeway at all is the counter traffic and some times inexperienced staff at those counters. For this one, especially, 4:30 pm onwards, some how every time I have visited there is only 1 counter for check out and there is a lot of shoppers! This is really annoying. Previously I had left a review about expired product in this Safeway. It remains to be a huge problem. Every item I have to diligently check the expiry. Today I found deli pasta expired by three months. The Greek yogurts were also expired by several weeks. Recently there has been a problem of the shopping cart wheels locking and alarming when I try to exit. Today when it happened, an employee told me I needed to pay for my groceries (which I had already done). She attempted to unlock the wheels but couldn't unlock them, so I had to carry my very heavy grocery haul out. Another woman exiting at the same time had the same problem with her cart locking at the exit. It seems to be an issue that won't be resolved, as I always find 2-3 abandoned grocery carts piled at the exit with their wheels locked. Besides it being an inconvenience to a shopper wanting to wheel their groceries to their vehicle, it is a safety issue as all the abandoned carts block the exit. It is amazing to me that this issue still hasn't been fixed. read more

I was at this store deli and wanted to buy salt & vinegar chicken wings. Workers was walking about doing their work. I stood for about 3-5 minutes and was never acknowledged by anyone that someone would be with me to help. The person at the sushi section appears to have blinders on. He didn't even look at my direction but managed to answer a customer's question. After about 5 minutes I said to girl walking by, 'does anybody work at this station', she noded at me but after about 1 min. I left. I went to Lucky's to get my chicken wings and got great service. I also noticed that they're meat department looks A LOT better than the previous years. In the past it wasn't as organized or well put together, but whoever is running it now is doing a FANTASTIC job! The display cases look so good and fresh! This is the closes grocery store near home so I come here quite often. I just wish they have gas station, it would of been more convenient. I love the staff here, they will go above and beyond. This store is pretty compact yet It's fully stocked with everything I need on a daily basis. They often offer great deals on Skinless Chicken Breast, which is great. Produce area always looking so pretty.......but it's a bit pricey compare to some stores further away. So, if I have to buy more than my normal groceries, I tend to go elsewhere. Other than that, this Safeway is my go to place when we need something quick or when we have company at our house. read more
