The food is always awesome you can have fillet and lobster (surf and turf) on any night of the week and the ambience is nice. Prices aren't low but the drinks are strong. My husband and I went there for an anniversary dinner, and it wasn't worth the $129.00 we spent. The wait staff was some of the best, and they were very good at their jobs. But the dinner was more than to be desired. We got wine to drink, and for food we got Grass-fed Tenderloin Carpaccio for an appetizer, I got the Wagyu Brisket Bolognese (which tasted like chef Boyardee) my husband got the Lamb(over cooked), and for dessert we got the Opera Cake(which was the best thing from the whole meal). I did read reviews on 301 and have been wanting to try it, and when we did it was a huge disappointment. I was hoping for so much more, and got mediocre food. read more

The field and fowl (lamb chop and duck leg) was really delicious. The lamb with all the different sauces was there best part. Service was excellent and the atmosphere thou classy was not snobby. We all had a fabulous and tasty Thanksgiving dinner at 301. All of the items were cooked perfectly, and we had a very friendly and attentive waiter... even though it was packed for the holiday!! Our highlight of the evening was sitting at the bar for yummy drinks before dinner. Our bartender chatted with us for most of the evening and even gave us tips on local sights to see. Will definitely be staying and EATING here the next time we are in town!! read more

11/18 - Pretty upscale for this town. At least it seems they are trying to make it that way. I will get the bad things out of the way first. Pretty noisy place , dishes crashing, what sounded like construction work in the kitchen, noise from the lobby. I wanted a steak so I tried the Kobe steak which is a ribeye but they said it was the heart of the ribeye for $39. I'm used to getting steaks right in restaurants about 50% of the time, normally undercooked-from what I asked. This time it was over cooked for what asked which was medium well. I could barely saw through it with the steak knife they gave me I ate about a third of it and told Samantha the waitress I couldn't eat anymore and she offered to make me another one which she did and I waited. It came back medium but it still is not a Kobe steak. when you hear Kobe you think it's going to be a little more tender. So advice here it is to not order the steak. Better off cooking one at home. Now on to the good stuff...oysters with the lemon ice were amazing and with a little bit of the Himalayan salt in a couple of them was just outstanding. The cherry pistachio gelato was out of this world and homemade she said. Service was very good. Going back tonight to try another dish. Staying at the hotel makes it convenient. Ok second night.....more disappointment.....was looking forward to the oysters again, but, they ran out??!! At 6:30pm? Redic..... ate a Cesar salad that was pretty good and crab cakes that were excellent with the sweet chili sauce. Was full from that and the bread n butter so I had to have the cherry pistachio gelato. Guess what??.......out of that too. For crying out loud!! Sat night and not stocked? Visiting friends, a group of us planned dinner and were able to review the menu ahead of time. I was looking forward to the baked oysters and they did it disappoint. We decided on several of hen appetizers because they all sounded amazing. My fav was the bone marrow tart and the fig and prosciutto- on word "delicious". We all picked different entree's so we could nibble on each other's. My pork chop was tender and tasty but my girlfriends bolognese and her hubby's ribeye were worthy of plate licking. Don't miss Restaurant 301 if you are visiting Humboldt County (or if you live here!). We enjoyed the Discovery menu and was told by the waiter that because it was five courses, the portions would be a tad smaller. It's a good thing, because there was a LOT of food. The main dish (I had the Gnocchi & Bolognese and he had the Ling Cod) was more than enough food, even without the rest of the courses which were also ample. The Chocolate Torte for dessert is fabulous and uses Dick Taylor chocolate which is made about a mile away. Cypress Grove cheeses and Humboldt Bay Kumamoto oysters are also featured on the menu and honor the local and delicious foods of Humboldt County. The wines are delicious with very reasonable prices. We stayed in the Carter House Inn (also charming and recommended) and so enjoyed breakfast at Restaurant 301 as well. The pastries were buttery, crispy, and were beautiful. The service could not have been better. We've eaten all over California and France. Restaurant 301 definitely compares with the best! read more

Was looking forward to trying a new restaurant, but was very disappointed. Very small portion sizes, wasn't good food either.

I was so excited to try this place for dinner. Heard good things. But when I got there it was a different story. We stood waiting by the hostess stand for 5 min. Walked over to a lady on a computer and asked for a table. She had to get up, go into the back, and came back stating that the server was busy and to give her 20 min to be seated. My boyfriend and I went to the bar. There was only one bartender and it took about 20 min to get a drink. The tables in the bar were filthy. We had to bus the table we sat at. We walked back over to the hostess stand and told the lady on the computer that we were ready. She went in the back to advise the server and told us to stand by. We stood for another 10 min and decided to sit in the lounge. The server came to us 10 min later to ask if we wanted to be seated. At that point we did not want to stay for dinner. Just finished our drinks and left. I would recommend a bar back and a few more servers. Also what was disturbing was an older group of people left the bar (keys in hand) stumbling out to their cars. Eating here for breakfast is of course convenient if you are staying in the Carter House. The options are limited and the complimentary baked goods are not refreshed after 9am. The menu is over complicated and unrefined. It may sound gourmet to put lamb and duck on the same plate, but unless it's executed brilliantly, it's not great. Less is more. We stopped in for happy hour while visiting Trinidad. I had a wine flight and cheese plate. Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful. My family had the fish tacos and a hard cider they mixed with a Pinot Grigio. That's just fun. If you are in the area, you should definitely stop by. I would not recommend dining here for any special occasion. My boyfriend and I went for Valentine's Day and the only good part of our meal was the comedy that came from eating there. We had a reservation and were not seated or acknowledged for at least 20 minutes after our reservation. Eventually, someone came and offered us free Champagne as it was going to be a bit of a wait. They had overbooked. We finally got sat in the wine room (45m after our reservation) and we heard tables around us talking about how the manager had just come to the room before we got there to talk to an unhappy customer (pretty sure no one was happy with their valentines experience). I rarely write negative reviews, but felt this one was necessary as we spent about $250.00 on a terrible meal with terrible service. The staff not only messed up our meal, but the majority of people's around us (which is ironic since the menu only allowed you to choose from 2 options for each course). They even brought one table the same course twice and then the server was shocked when they said they had already had that course. I wouldn't have minded the poor service or the wait, but for over $100/plate I expect higher quality food and service. They had a set menu for valentines (not sure if it's always like that), the price was $100/person, not including alcohol. I wouldn't mind paying that much for great food/service, but unfortunately the food was mediocre and the portions were TINY. My boyfriend eats a lot, but I don't and I even I left hungry, we literally went home and made a second dinner afterwards. At one point everyone in the wine room was talking about the terrible service/food, all we could do was laugh as a group. It was an interesting experience to say the least. I had heard good things about the restaurant, but was extremely disappointed. Will not be going there ever again unless I hear from management. I'm sure this is not a surprising review as I bet they got many many complaints that night. read more

Stayed for two nights at this place, the restaurant on-site is such a bonus. Delicious food, fair-priced, will definitely want to come back! Everything was prepared just right, the flavor of each ingredient balancing each other out, could not ask for more. Breakfast was included with my stay and it was absolutely scrumptious; not to mention, it had options that you don't always see in a restaurant, such as crepes and quiches and grapefruit brûlée. The best deal around is the North Coast Journal's smartcard which offers large discounts at restaurants throughout Humboldt County. But even though I had used it several times at 301 and many more times around the County, last Monday the general manager, Daniel Dagorret, refused the card because it was Happy Hour! (I used it last night at Abruzzi during Happy Hour, with no problem). My wife and I are retired on limited income and Happy Hour is, no was, our got-to time for Restaurant 301. We happened solely by chance to stay at the beautiful inn where this restaurant is located. We had both dinner and breakfast in Restaurant 301 with both meals being exceptional. The staff were extremely warm and friendly, providing service that one experiences in a top rated restaurant. The meals, service, and atmosphere were worth the cost and more. I don't know if we'll be back in Eureka, but if we are we'll be dining at Restaurant 301. read more

Bait & switch!! We were staying at the hotel and decided to try the restaurant. They informed us of a special prix-fixe they had which required seating between 5 and 6 pm. When we asked about the menu they showed us a prix-fixe menu with Seafood Risotto and Chocolate Cake etc. We decide to go that night, reserved and showed up at 5:30. Imagine our surprise when they showed us the menu after being seated (we were a party of 6). The entree (no choice) was Turkey Pot Pie and Oreo Cookies & Ice-cream for dessert - this at a supposedly "fine dining restaurant"! They refused to offer any alternative, only offered a vegetarian risotto as alternate after repeatedly complaining about the switch. Several in our party decided to forgo the pri-fixe and ordered from the more expensive a la carte menu. Two from our group stuck with the pre-fixe and received a pie that was all hard crust and no real pie or turkey inside it. And throughout all this the waitress was pretty strident and unapologetic for either the bait-and-switch or the food quality. The rest of the food was middling. They did take off some money for the one uneaten pie. We have eaten at top restaurants all over the world and this was certainly not a fine dining experience. read more

Ambience was ok. It just seemed a bit forced... Service was good. Now the food was great. French onion soup, Caesar salad, wild mushroom tart, gnocchi, lamb chops, baked Alaskan. The Caesar is very different but a must! Small and Like no Caesar you've ever had but a must. Tart and gnocchi were very good. May have changed the mushroom selection on the tart. Sliced truffle on gnocchi not much flavor. The baked Alaskan is one of the best desserts I have ever had! All in all, a great meal. Eat here! read more

We went here because we had a gift certificate for a wine flight and the discovery menu. The food was phenomenal and they paired each selection with a wine that best complimented it. Best dinner out we'e experienced in a long time - Samantha made us feel like we were the only customers in the house, which was not the case. She was beyond attentive, without being intrusive, offered great suggestions, both from the menu and of things to do while we're here. The chef is gifted working with what's seasonally grown in their own garden, the creations were beyond delicious. I had one of the two daily seafood specials, the crab and fish ravioli - stuffed with filling to practically bursting, yet still perfectly balanced with the most delicious fresh-made pasta, and served with corn, asparagus, and pea shoots from the garden. My husband had the venison osso bucco from the regular menu, and the Caesar salad, both of which vanished with gusto. For dessert, spumoni opera cake, their version of the traditional, was both light and satisfying in every way. Try the Carter Cellars Blend #5, perfect with the osso bucco and from the owners' own Calistoga vineyard and winery. I am being very fair in giving 301 a three, my wife thinks it should be lower. We went to dinner on 7-29-18 with high expectations which unfortunately were not met. My wife ordered a glass of riesling and I ordered a glass of Truchard Merlot. The wine came my wife liked hers and mine was not really great, it had an alcohol taste above and beyond normal merlot. I had never heard of this wine before so I figured that was it it's normal taste and would have to live with it. I ordered the pork chop and my wife ordered the salmon which turned out to be what I should have ordered. She said her meal was great and I tasted the wild salmon and it was great. My pork chop was cooked perfectly BUT it had had a huge covering of fat and gristle all along the the edge from one end of the bone to the other end. When I cut the gristle off I lost about 20% of my chop. I then cut the meat from the bone and found the bone was covered with gristle. I was now down to 60% of my chop and to be fair it was good. It came with chard that was cooked like spinach but it had a stem down the middle of each leaf that was woody and tough which made the whole thing un eatable. Now back to the wine. As I was getting close to the bottom of the glass I noticed some some sediment which I was ok with till I drank a little more and discovered that I had enough sediment for a barrel. I called Daniel my waiter over and he said that this was common. I told him that I had been drinking wine since I was an altar boy and had never seen this much sediment in a glass and he assured me I was wrong and all was good. The bill was not adjusted so his tip was. His tip would have been 23 dollars but I deducted the glass of wine 18 dollars and he got the rest. This is not how you get repeat business. read more

I have always been super impressed with this restaurant's food and service but tonight it was awful. I was with a business group and the group was way too large for the restaurant to accommodate us in the conference room so people were standing and some even left. Secondly, the room was incredibly hot and stuffy and the staff didn't bother to turn on the fan until way late in the evening. To top it all off when our speaker was done the group was split into two areas for dinner and when I tried to pull up a chair to join a group a server rudely told me to move and that only 4 people could sit at each table. He did not redirect me to another table and I had to track him down and ask where the heck I was supposed to sit. Lastly the food took at least an hour to arrive and the portions were small. No apology was made for the wait. I will never attend another business dinner of this size here again! It was horrible service. read more
