Holy cow...where to begin? The Wine Specatator Grand Award wine list is the creme de la creme. If you have an inkling of interest in grape juice, please do as I did and cuddle up to the massive fireplace in the main lobby of the Carter House Inn with a copy. For dinner, my party of three decided to share everything. For starters, we ordered two Mushroom & Marrow Tarts (trust me if you only get one, you'll regret and order another, therefore throwing of the timing of the rest of your dinner. Do your server a favor and just order two). Our Restaurant Manager, Daniel (blame him for the M&MT recipe), was attentive checking in with us. For entrees, we ordered a ribeye and the lamb, both medium-rare temp which were prepared to perfection. Being from Oregon, I appreciated Daniel telling me later the lamb is from Oregon. On another evening, Alicia the bartender suggested the Caesar salad which was so good. The balance of lemon with the touch of anchovy gave this the perfect balance. Of course, the M&MT followed. All in all, this restaurant experience was far above excellent. I would absolutely recommend while you are in NCal exploring the Victorian architecture or the spectacular Redwoods NP. Currently food is being served in the bar and the lobby seating area with plans for a full restaurant opening soon. The food is incredible. And the service is outstanding. A great attention to detail, warm hospitality and a staff, from manager to server, that goes above and beyond. It was a quiet evening and we got seated right away. My husband and I had the Brussel sprout appetizer to start and it was delicious. The waiter served it with bread and it paired prefect! for dinner my husband had the pork and he finished it all.. the sweet potatoes puree was SPECTACULAR. I had the bolgenese and it was very good also. It was super filling and my husband had to finish It for me. We finished with the opera cake.. mmmMmmm.. so so good.. a light delicate chocolate dessert. when the bill came there were 2 peppermint truffles on top, also delish! Ok, so a sleepy rainy evening in eureka which is no surprise. Slipped in before close and has the most amazing Kumamoto oysters. Ordered 6 and had my waiter Noah pick his fave 3. Oh my, what a treat! After my gin martini to cleanse the palette I slipped into the Petrale Sole special wrapped in crab meat. Happy time! Finished up with a crisp martini for desert by the fire. Great experience! Have been here twice and both experiences have been wonderful. Service is absolutely amazing!!! Very attentive staff We do the 5 course option where you choose a soup/salad, appetizer, entree and dessert. There is a palate cleanser between appetizer and entree that serves as 5th course. I love the crab cakes served with spicy marmalade and mustard. Both sauces are excellent. My wife loves the soup which is like a french onion. We are steak eaters so we go for the red meat. On our second trip, the special was a ribeye which was delicious. The desserts are great but we feel are just slightly lower in quality compared to the rest of the menu. The homemade ice creams are our favorite. Definitely a must try for anyone living or visiting Eureka!!! read more

Totally awesome dining experience in a old Victorian style house. Great atmosphere for a really romantic dinner ( oh btw I'm here for business). But if your in town and looking for real fine dining come here. I had a puffed pastry appetizer loaded with mushroom and spinach and custard. To die for. For dinner Halibut wrapped in collard green with andouille sausage ( right sounds gross) and in Cajun cream sauce paired with pumpkin risotto and the most tender carrots I've ever had. The whole meal was scrumptious and they even gave me a dark chocolate peppermint treat for dessert. Best part of the dinner was Samantha who was the most kind friendly and attentive sever. Good drinks and fantastic happy hour prices! Get there early for happy hour, before 4:45, because it fills up in the bar. The happy hour bar food is good and priced very well. The ambiance is beautiful, they're definitely going for a high end appearance. Don't bother with dinner, I should have stuck with the bar food. I would have been fine paying the more expensive price for dinner had it been good, but it was not. I ordered the Pan Roasted Chicken. They obtained a beautiful sear on the chicken and the outside was a lovely golden brown crisp. But, unfortunately, the meat was very dry. It was served on top of a marsala sauce that was very bland so that was not much help either. I felt like they could have done much better with dinner. read more

We were really looking forward to this, having read all the hype about service and quality, only to be disappointed. Service friendly but nowhere near the quality I would have expected, passing menus and meals from one end of the table, problems with wine glasses with fluff, wrong wine delivered etc. Portion size all over the place - some of the entree's were little more than an appetizer (risotto, pappardelle), others were huge (pork chop, salmon). Overall the food quality was pretty good but the absolute killer for us was that my 12 year olds pork chop was served basically rare....luckily he is food educated and stopped eating it as soon as he noticed. We sent it back, it came back 10 minutes later and was still only 50% non-rare. To the servers credit he took it off the bill but this for me was a strong indication that the kitchen is not of the quality that we expected. I'd be mad if this happened in a $5/plate diner. We had reservations for 14 for a graduation celebration last Saturday night. We were given a lovely room. We ordered appetizers and dinner. They forgot my order and i waited 20 minutes to be served . The dessert orders were confused...it was ice cream that was the size of a small tablespoon and came melted. Because of all the confusion of service our dinner took longer than expected and we were told to leave twice because another party had the room....we were just trying to settle the bill. The service and rudeness spoiled what would have been a lovely celebration. We reported the situation to the manager who didn't seem to be apologetic. read more

Best restaurant in Eureka. I am giving it four stars because. It was good and some bad. Extensive list of wine; which is a plus. Our host sat us and was very friendly. Our waiter was very attentive at first but then I think he had too many table. It took a loooooong time to get our wine. Then the appetizers came and they were excellent. The tart and the Caesar salad. Our main meal came, we had ordered the duck special and the lamb. The duck came and was presented as the duck. The duck was placed but it really was fish, thigh first presented as duck and then said it was chicken. Obviously, I do not blame the wait staff but the management. This is a training problem. Duck and lamb chops were served and were excellent. Having said that, the lamb had two chops, one was medium rare as ordered and the other was more on the rare side. Again, management needs to do some training. Otherwise, great place. Just needs a little training. There is an amazing cheese list... though I was too full to order. Next time!!!! read more

I'm really disappointed with my last experience at Restaurant 301. I've been eating there every time I come to Eureka, it is my must-stop-to-eat-place until two days ago! My husband and I took 4 friends visiting from abroad and we had told them about the wonderful food... we got there the restaurant has only two tables and ours. We ordered and waited, waited, waited only to receive our gnocchi cold, hard and dried inside. We ordered three gnocchi's due to the recommendation of Alicia, our server. My friend and I sent ours back just to receive them COLD and disgusting again! It was the worst gnocchi I ever tasted ever. The kind you buy at the grocery store, but worse. What a shame. I was really looking forward to an upscale dinner date- but I would rather have a grungy dive with palatable drinks and food than this. Humboldt was doing Burger week and 301 had a wagyu burger with smoked bacon and a bone marrow custard. What I got did not have bacon or anything else the paper advertised there was one piece of iceberg lettuce and the bun was cold and looked the whole thing looked like it came from a wendy's drive through. Ordered fries since it didn't even come with them and instead of two orders for each of us we shared one. Didn't matter that the burger wasn't gourmet when the drinks we got were so bad I didn't have the stomach to eat the burger anyways. The drink I ordered was the Oaxacan sunset and it tasted like a leather shoestring! Also my man ordered a greyhound and instead of vodka grapefruit it was beefeater gin with a splash of grapefruit. And guess if you want to get gussied up and go out for cocktails this place is fine but it's over priced pretentious Bay Area vibe-if that's what you're looking for. Next time I'll just hit the brewery for a big burger- glad I went for the adventure but it wasn't what they advertised. If it was what they wrote it and photographed it as it could have been amazing. They do not even deserve one star. The service was horrible. We had a Novartis Pharmaceutical dinner and we have to keep asking when was the food coming. We had Physicians leaving the Program after waiting for 1 hour and 45 minutes without eating. It was so late that we requested our desert to go. Sat in the bar, and was REALLY disapointed with the service as well as food. I ordered the open face turkey sandwich. It said it had gravy on it, but it was honestly just a mediocre and greasy cheese sauce. My husband got the burger and it was luke warm. The waitress pretty much ignored us the whole time--we never got our drinks filled and we had to go up to the bar for the check and payment. Also the fact that the walls are covered with "awards" from Wine Spectator magazine is absurd. Everyone knows you just pay for those and they send them to you (a fake restaurant won one a few years ago). The atmosphere is nice hence two stars instead of one. read more

When we arrived there was no host at the podium for a good 5 to 7 minutes so.....we sat ourselves. The food was great, everything tasted wonderful. The only thing I would say they could improve on would be the way they serve food. When they brought our main course it was on a cold plate. The runny mashed potatoes were cold and the steak was lukewarm. Not what you would expect for the price. Also, the portions are so small! I can't stand paying so much for so little. OK, here's the deal - let's start with the food. It was very tasty, but it was the service (or lack thereof) which leads to this 2-star review. We arrived early - there was no maitre'd - I finally had to approach the hotel staff to get someone's attention. I was told that we could not be seated early - OK - I understand this. But when I approached the podium at 7:31 I was ignored and a walk-in couple was given a table ahead of me. We were finally seated at about 7:40. No bread was offered (although given to other patrons) - I finally requested some at about 8:15 as we were still waiting for our appetizers. The waitstaff appeared frazzled and clearly in over their heads - unable to attend to the customers. I ordered crabcakes and was served a house salad instead. I can't believe I'm writing this in a review, but there was a bent staple on the plate! (true). The waiter never came back to fill our empty water glasses. The food (remember the food?) was very tasty, but the fish (my wife had the salmon, I had the special rockfish) was tepid and oversalted. So, maybe this was a bad night and half the staff called in sick - if so they should never have accepted my reservation. And now, I can't even write a review on OpenTable since I am listed as a "no-show" - not true - I suspect when were taken to our table the overworked staff simply failed to mark us as "arrived". read more

I'm giving it 5 stars based on location (Eureka, CA) My wife and I had a great meal here. We stayed at the hotel, which was great. We wandered downstairs for our dinner reservation. They had an oyster special which I'm always down for. My wife ordered the king salmon medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. I ordered the wagyu beef bolognese and gnocchi (same dish) and it was delicious as well. We split the ginger lime creme brûlée for dessert. The wine list is out of this world, especially considering its Eureka. Nothing against Eureka--we just live in wine country and usually don't see wine lists that expansive even around here. We will definitely return to Restaurant 301 next time we're in Eureka. It's a great spot. read more

We have been loving our dinners lately. Fun selections, great appetizers, and we both had one of our favourite meals of the year so far here. Mine was a venison dish, and she had a red sauce noodle plate with some of the tenderest meat ever in it. We also love the happy hour specials and of course the truffle fries. The food is always awesome you can have fillet and lobster (surf and turf) on any night of the week and the ambience is nice. Prices aren't low but the drinks are strong. Excellent 5 course prix fixe menu. Stand outs were the crab cake on fresh greens and local raw oysters for appetizers (who would know that Eureka bay is the top producer in CA (70%of total crop) for oysters and of exceptional quality, OMG, the Kumamotos were exceptionally sweet, tender, and a total OT. The rack of lamb and wild salmon were standouts for main courses. Dessert included an incredibly decadent baked Alaska (with their own ice cream) and incredible cheeses from the local area. And the wine list: WOW!. I never have seen such a comprehensive list outside of NYC or places in Napa like 'da Laundry. You can spend a lot, but if you know wine (other than the 'big guns'), they have some extremely rare and superb wines that are really affordable. Only complaint was the sun coming in at early evening through the upper corner window of the restaurant (we moved seats because of this); a simple high level shade is needed to block this. We stayed in the inn's Bell Cottage for 2 nights. Nice and comfy with a huge public living room and top notch kitchen to be shared amongst the 3 rooms in the place. It is a great place if you want to rent out all three rooms and have the place to yourselves for a family reunion. Will come back. read more

11/18 - Pretty upscale for this town. At least it seems they are trying to make it that way. I will get the bad things out of the way first. Pretty noisy place , dishes crashing, what sounded like construction work in the kitchen, noise from the lobby. I wanted a steak so I tried the Kobe steak which is a ribeye but they said it was the heart of the ribeye for $39. I'm used to getting steaks right in restaurants about 50% of the time, normally undercooked-from what I asked. This time it was over cooked for what asked which was medium well. I could barely saw through it with the steak knife they gave me I ate about a third of it and told Samantha the waitress I couldn't eat anymore and she offered to make me another one which she did and I waited. It came back medium but it still is not a Kobe steak. when you hear Kobe you think it's going to be a little more tender. So advice here it is to not order the steak. Better off cooking one at home. Now on to the good stuff...oysters with the lemon ice were amazing and with a little bit of the Himalayan salt in a couple of them was just outstanding. The cherry pistachio gelato was out of this world and homemade she said. Service was very good. Going back tonight to try another dish. Staying at the hotel makes it convenient. Ok second night.....more disappointment.....was looking forward to the oysters again, but, they ran out??!! At 6:30pm? Redic..... ate a Cesar salad that was pretty good and crab cakes that were excellent with the sweet chili sauce. Visiting friends, a group of us planned dinner and were able to review the menu ahead of time. I was looking forward to the baked oysters and they did it disappoint. We decided on several of hen appetizers because they all sounded amazing. My fav was the bone marrow tart and the fig and prosciutto- on word "delicious". We all picked different entree's so we could nibble on each other's. My pork chop was tender and tasty but my girlfriends bolognese and her hubby's ribeye were worthy of plate licking.
