I find that the Red Squirrel is a hidden gem, hidden in a smaller strip mall. Parking is free in their lot. The staff are amazingly attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. I ordered the Cobb Salad which comes with fried chicken strips AND hot bacon dressing. I remember my mom and grandma making this type of dressing and it didn't disappoint! We normally enjoy the food but the service is horrible. So many in the area have stopped coming due to it. Today we stood waiting to be seated. The place was 1/8th full and several employees were just looking at us. The bus boy finally seated us. The short waitress came over (one of them that were dining nothing but still stared at us waiting. I adked what sides came with the breakfast burger. She had to go stare at the menu board for a bit and finally came back to tell me what was on the burger. I had to tell her several time how I wanted the egg cooked. Just bad service, but good food. A great old school establishment that has been around in multiple locations around Cincinnati for many many years. Many years ago they opened this satellite suburban location in Grosbeck /Colerain and it has been a mainstay for sandwich platters. As well as a go to for weekend breakfast or a midweek double decker. Prices are reasonable at this diner and they have a varied selection you would expect from this genre The real stand out treat for me is that they still have real country ham on their menu. After Bob Evan's took it off their menu, this place put it on theirs. The portion is more generous but on par with that the Waffle House serves. This is a locally owned restaurant that locals enjoy and the money stays in the neighborhood. They are very generous with local organizations. read more

I've been here many times. They used to have a staff who has been there for years and no longer working there. Decided to try the big mic and it was undercooked. Pre made frozen patty's. I was fine with it being slightly undercooked but this is not the place that ask you how you would like it done so many would expect it to be fully cooked. With the crust over cooked and the middle undercooked led me to believe it was frozen when placed in the grill and it was uniform in shape. The fries were under cooked and it seems the grease was dirty as there black specks and it wasn't pepper And what is interesting is that the manager wears ear buds in both ears which is rude. read more

Red Squirrel has just moved up in my esteem, and they were already pretty high. I almost always get chicken and dumplings soup with whatever meal I choose. Today's soup choices re just irresistible, so I decided to make a meal of two or three soups. I started by requesting a taste of their mock turtle soup. It was delicious, but, as I told my server, it was so rich that I wouldn't be able to handle a bowl of it. My first course was pasta e fagioli. Theirs is a great blend of ground beef and orzo in a nice tomato broth, augmented with peas and large slices of carrot. Delicious. Then came tomato queso, a wonderfully silky balance of cream of tomato with the kind of queso sauce that tortilla chips love to scoop up. Both flavors were subtle, but definitely present. And I finished with my beloved chicken and dumplings. It seems to have been pretty freshly made, which is a slight negative, because as it sits on the stove, the broth thickens from the starch in the dumplings. That doesn't happen here often, because they sell a lot of soup. Anyway, it's a nice chicken stock wit a lot of chicken pieces, and an unbelievable amount of dumplings. 100% do not patronize this establishment! The owner, Satish was verbally abusive towards a teen employee while calling her stupid in front of the whole store. Asking if she was capable of performing simple tasks. He was very demeaning. Its no wonder they can barely keep staff. I felt so bad for her. If you have a female teen, dont let them work here. The owner is rude, sexist, and dared this poor girl to cry in his restaurant with an open kitchen to the whole place for everyone to hear. Then he fired her and when she asked if she could use the phone to call her parents for a ride home he told her to quit causing drama in his store. Poor girl was put out in the freezing cold with out being able to call for a ride home from a place she should have felt safe working at. Surprizingly hadn't eaten here in years, since they are about a 30 minute drive away, but we finally got here again and I'm glad we did, They have a pretty large menu, they serve breakfast anytime--a lot to like here. They had 6 different soups today- I got bean--it was thick and delicious--some of the best bean soup I've ever had. Also got a ham and beef double decker served with chips and a pickle slice. It was also pretty good. I still had room for a piece of pie--lemon meringie--delish ! (They also sometimes have sugar free lemon meringue--I would like to try that at a future visit.) Went in for the first time for breakfast. My friends dad use to go all the time so figured I would give it a try. It was really busy despite the weather We were seated quickly and our server came over immediately and asked us for the drink order. Since it was a new place, took time to look at menu. I was not in the mood for breakfast so ordered a chicken gyro with fries. My friend had an omelette and potatoes. It was out fairly quickly. My sandwich was basically pita, chicken and uncooked onions. I requested additional sauce. The chicken was not very flavorful so used two of the sauces. I like my onions cooked so should have requested that. The fries were very oily so didn't finish those. The server snd staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was just okay. When I became a single dad, I relied on forming habits to get through the struggle and adjusting to a new way of life. One of these new habits was Monday nights going to the public library, going to the park and having dinner at Red Squirrel. Over the next 2.5 years, this pattern became a tradition. It helped us weather the pandemic and give us a chance to form a bond. Our tradition became known throughout my family and friends, that my mom would call if we changed up the order one night and she didn't find us at the park. The workers at the restaurant grew to know us and that my son ordered the same thing every time. 3 pieces of French toast, whatever melon they had as part of their fruit bowl, and chocolate milk. We would talk about whatever was interesting him and I did my best to try and follow along. Over time the restaurant changed ownership. Some of the staff stayed on, some decided to move on. I believe those that moved on were the ones that made the restaurant familial, welcoming. For the last year I have broken from our tradition on Monday nights. It has grown hard to support an establishment that was once a second home. I understand times are tough and once new ownership comes in, they want to make it their own. I understand that costs of goods and services have gone up and the restaurant business operates on tight margins. What I cant understand is how a meal for a 7 year old can cost $17. When the change was made to use regular bread instead of Texas toast for the French toast, neither he nor I complained, we adjusted and ordered another slice. But this breaks down to $4 for a slice of bread dipped in egg wash and $1 for fruit, when we once paid $2/slice with the fruit included. We are not talking about the best tasting French toast. That has never been our reason for going. We went because it was our habit, we liked the staff, we were welcomed. Now when we go there are more and more empty tables, young staff on their phones and not at all welcoming. There is no sense of familial or even warmth. Have always loved this place for the diner food and the service. That was until we were subjected to the worst customer service we have ever experienced with the disgruntled employee Keira who checked us out. I have been in customer service for 42 years and I can say without hesitation that Keira is not cut out for any job in hospitality! We have NEVER come across a nastier or ruder employee. It started with her being incredibly rude on the phone before we even got there and then got so much worse in person. When we were checking out and presented our Foodie Card which was explicitly designated for use at this particular address, Keira said the owner wouldn't take them. When we asked why she said it wasn't her problem. She then refused to speak with me anymore (What did I do wrong? Questions aren't allowed?) and ignored me repeatedly until finally she said I "snatched" something out of her hand. My husband & I both were astonished that she would make something like that up and we said no one snatched anything! When we asked her repeatedly to tell us what was "snatched" she just kept saying I snatched "it" & had no answer since no such thing had occurred! I'm guessing she thought by saying we snatched something away from her, she could defend her irrational behavior. We asked other employees if we could talk to a manager and they said he wouldn't be in until later but gave us a name "Reddy". The other employees were noticeably embarrassed by Keira's behavior and each of them apologized profusely. Seemed as though they were used to apologizing for her. We really felt badly for the other excellent employees since we know that having to constantly clean up after a bad employee is not fun and makes for a difficult work environment, not to mention the probability of reduced tips for those doing their job when people are treated so poorly by Keira. Needless to say we will not be back. There are too many good places to eat to put up with abusive employees like Keira. Would love to hear a response from management. A new owner took over in the summer, 2023. There were some transition problems. We placed a carry out order that got lost; it was not ready when we arrived so we had to wait for our order to be made. Prices went up but I would rather a restaurant raise prices than that they cut portion size or quality, so we were Okay with this. They serve breakfast all day. They have Double Decker sandwiches, hot sandwiches, and salads. They still can make a rare hamburger (which most places in Cincinnati avoid.) They have a small dinner menu that includes pork chops, chicken and hot brown sandwiches. It is worth looking at their daily specials and soups when you walk in. Two of our favorites is their meat loaf sandwich and their fish sandwiches. One elderly (96 y.o.) relative loves to eat here. She always plans to have breakfast but then remembers their rare hamburgers and orders that! read more

We visited the restaurant one Saturday morning for brunch. Found the food edible. But not very exciting. I had cornbeef hash, two eggs and wheat toast. My wife had the flying pig omelet with home fries. The omelet was three eggs, cut up sausage patty and Kraft american cheese slices. The home fries were just plain.
