My husband and I discovered Cap City Fine Diner & Bar when our daughter was admitted to Cincinnati Children's. We really needed a break from the room while she was sleeping. First let me start with the staff and the ambiance. The decor is fun and charming, and the staff is amazingly friendly and empathetic. In fact, when they heard what brought us in to dine, they prepared a special appetizer for us. I thought I was going to cry. Now onto the star of the night: the food. First, when offered bread, say yes. You will love it! Warm and buttery and not a huge amount that takes away from your appetite. Next, we shared the Blue Cheese Potato Chips and Warm Pretzel. They were both delicious. Neither my husband nor I ever tasted a pretzel that good! For my entree, I ordered the Crab Cakes Blue Plate Special while my husband ordered the Romano Crusted Chicken. Yum! (I tried both dishes.) The Crab Cakes were huge and flavorful and just the right portion size overall. The Romano Crusted Chicken was tender with a light, crispy breading and delicious cream sauce. I highly recommend both dishes, and if you're looking for a dish that's shareable, the Romano Cruated Chicken is perfect! And while we were much too full for dessert, we ordered one to share anyway: the Chocolate Malt Diner Pie. A true treat for the taste buds! Very cute fine diner vibe place that they put on UC's campus. Was not extremely crowded for a Saturday night, but the restaurant is newer. The blue cheese potato chips were yummy, a generous mountain of chips with a Alfredo sauce. They were out of Pinot Grigio when I went. Had a glass of wine and the chicken Caesar salad. I'm sitting here eating my leftovers from Cap City Fine Diner and it reminded me to get this review going. The headline here is that Cap City adds a great option in the Heights neighborhood around UC. A bit more upscale than some of the bars and restaurants that attract the thousands of students in the area, but not so much that you'd be afraid to go there. The place is brand new, and sits adjacent to a soon-to-open hotel. We tried the Blue Cheese Potato Chips ($12.99) as a starter. Delicious, and the blue cheese is not strong. It was a bit much for 2 people as a starter - would be great for 3-4 or more to share as a snack (Would be amazing to snack on if you were having drinks at the bar). For dinner we shared the open faced Philly Steak sandwich and fries ($15.99). The fries were a nice surprise - great seasoning and fresh. The sandwich was big. Overall, seemed like a good value for a dine-in experience. We also had the Spicy Shrimp Pasta, which I just finished a couple days later. It was as good reheated as it was that night. A generous portion for $21.99. All in, while it's not the kind of cheap eats you'll find in some divier places around UC, the overall value was surprisingly good. Eek so excited that Cap City is now in Cincinnati! I went years ago in Columbus and was so excited to try this new location. They have a similar vibe, with a lot of old school kitsch. This reminds me of a elevated family restaurant such as Frish's you're from Cincinnati. This means it's family friendly or you can go out with girlfriends to have cocktails. I had a Bellini and the 513 Cosmo, which were really good and the smoked salmon which packed flavor and it had capers in the cream cheese, which was good. Everything was fresh which quality is my middle name. It's also in the Celare hotel so if you come after 4 PM, you can eat downstairs or opt to eat on the rooftop with a different menu of course. I discovered the other day that they've finally opened! We are huge fans of Cap City Diner and when in Columbus, we at least order a slice of their 24K Carrot Cake to go if we don't find time to dine there. Sammy, our waitress was superb! She and Brad, the manager, were very friendly and informative to our questions about any and everything about the opening of our favorite diner. The lighting was a bit dark this evening, that I couldn't read the menu well enough with my readers. Thankfully, I pretty much knew the menu. We weren't that hungry but ordered the Hot and Sour Calamari appetizer ($16) and salads as our entree. The Two Apple Spinach Salad ($11) for him, and Wedge of Iceberg ($10) for me. We just wanted to experience this place in our residential town. No disappointments here. As always, we topped our meal with the 24K Carrot Cake ($10), even though the Apple Pie was very tempting. A pretty good diner. The food was fine and some were very good. It's a chain down from CBus and in the Mitchell restaurant group. That being said it's such a great looking restaurant. It's pretty large, and most of it looks like you're in a diner right out of the 1950's America. The staff were super friendly and the service was quite fast. We were seated in a very spacious and comfortable booth and its "vintage" diner decor with comfy looking red covered bar stools. There was outside seating which will be perfect for the warmer months, still if you wanted all the sunlight, they closed it and it was down right toasty on this 20 degree morning. We went for brunch and their menu was more lunch centric but there were enough breakfast entrees for a guest wanting the most important meal of the day. We started with the blue cheese chips and some brunch cocktails. For entrees we got the breakfast burrito, fish and chips and the Romano crusted chicken. The chips were great paired with the tangy earthiness of that bleu cheese. Be warned that the portions for the "big plates" are huge and true to size, lol. The fish was good though it could be crispier, I think it's their breading because I had left overs and threw them in a fryer, wasn't quite able to crisp them up perfectly. The Romano chicken was as good as Cheese Cake factories, yeah yeah another chain but that crusted Romano is pretty darn good. Hubby and I tried out Cap City for Restaurant Week. I really liked the decor and some of the older items on display. Haven't seen a Charles Chips canister in ages and I'd not seen Log Cabin syrup in a metal container that looked like a log cabin. They stopped making them before I was born. One of my fave's was the team photo of the Reds when they won the World Series back in 1976 when they had the Big Red Machine. It definitely looked like an elevated style diner and the food was too. We both started out with their chicken soup of the day. Delicious and full of flavor! I tried the meatloaf. However, I asked for light amount of gravy and it was swimming in it. It was ultra rich too. The fried chicken was excellent!! We both ordered a slice of their "Seriously Big Chocolate Cake"! They weren't kidding! We had to save one of the pieces to go! Came here for family dinner on their opening night! There restaurant is very spacious, almost too big for the amount of customers, making it feel a little empty. I actually enjoyed how the restaurant was lit, a little dim, but not too dark. Unfortunately, the food was very underwhelming. We found a hair in one of the salads which grossed us out a bit, which was handled very gracefully by the staff. Flavor did seem to be lacking in almost all the dishes we tried. The rolls, however, were delicious!! The service was great! There was a lot of staff there so we never had to wait, which was very nice. Excited to see this Columbus staple in Cincy. It was surprisingly not crowded on a Saturday evening and I can only guess people don't know it's open yet. The service from Caroline was excellent. Dinner was delicious and I appreciated the special touches like offering gluten free rolls. Crab cakes were my favorite, but I'll be back to try some of the other daily specials. First time here-group has brunch. What a variety of offerings. We did all stick to brunch. Two quiches - lots of spinach and just the right amounts of cheese. Eggs Benedict looked good. Five of our group had the 4 egg omelette- 2 swapped the ham for bacon and that was declared good. The people who got ham were happy too. One had a child with us and Kee, our server, was more than accommodating to get the plain French Toast requested. Kee took care of us very well with refills and just cert attentive. As this is a 2 rating, let me start with the positives of Cap City Fine Diner because you may very well not share my opinion of the things I didn't like, so maybe it's worth a go. So the positives. From a facilities standpoint, it is a brand new restaurant in the University of Cincinnati area and has a spacious interior, a nice bar, many TVs showing sports, and nice bathrooms. All of the features are nicely done. They have a great website that shows all the menus for brunch, lunch, dinner, and specials and guides on how to make reservations and order online. So they are rocking on the digital media standpoint. Their menu has items for just about everyone and a nice bar menu as well. They have gluten free alternatives if you desire that as well. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The hostesses were very nice as well. They brought out warm buttered rolls to the table as the evening began. At this point, you may wonder why I rated it a 2. First, let me give my basis for a 2. A 2 means for me is if someone recommends we go there, I would actively recommend we go somewhere else as there are many dining options around Cincinnati. So why would I recommend an alternative? 1. Parking. Unless luck is in your favor, you will have to park in a parking garage and pay over $10. Also, the parking process at the neighboring garage with bar code scans, assigned parking and app setup was quite frustrating for a one time dining experience. 2. We were seated in the patio area. Given it was 25F outside and the fact that there are small gaps between the roll-up doors, it made for an unpleasant environment. The radiant heaters in the ceiling kept the top part warm, but my legs were so cold I had to put my jacket around them. This is not a "fine dining" environment. Also, just inside the window, in the indoor seating area, a booth for 4 sat empty the entire time, so there was an option to not sit in the oddly temperature controlled patio. I saw a couple of tables asked to be relocated. I don't expect the customers to have to tell management that the area is uncomfortable. 3. Other than some cosmetic references, this is not any version of a "Diner", fine or otherwise, that I would consider accurate as the restaurant name indicated. I absolutely LOVE diners and visit in almost every location I travel to. The ambience, vibe, decor, and food in no way reminded me of diner. Upscale American food is more accurate. For me, if something is important enough to put in the restaurant name, like Pizza, Burger, Fried Chicken, Diner, etc. then the restaurant should 100% honor that in offering and vibe. Not the case here. I concede this may not be relavent to many people. 4. The food. Overall the food was just ok. I ordered coffee. There were coffee grounds in the bottom of the cup, which is a brewing problem. My nice waitress brought me a second cup which was good. I ordered the Balsamic Chicken. On the positive side it came with 2 skin-on roasted chicken breasts which is an upscale touch. But the spinach, peppers and mushrooms side item was barely a garnish in quantity. My wife had the crab cakes and they were on the smallish side, but the bigger issue was the green beans were al dente to the point of barely cooked. On paper these dishes were well conceived as Fine Dining offerings, but not well executed. I would say that if parking weren't an issue (maybe I work on UC campus and can walk over for lunch), and if I sat in the comfortable interior, and the food was executed well, I would probably be at a rating of 4, but none of this was the case during my visit. read more

Stopped by for dinner after a UC basketball game. We parked on the street, but there is a parking garage about a block away. The hotel in front of the building will be opening in about a month or so and they will have valet the manager told us. The restaurant is gorgeous. We had the fish and chips. Second, menu isn't that extensive, but trust me when I say "something for everyone ". We had a wide range of tastes at our table, and all were satisfied. Great cheeseburger. Wonderful chicken parm. Cesar salad could have used a bit more chicken. Drinks were strong, albeit slow to arrive. Not a server issue as I believe there was only one bartender that evening. Did not deter from the meal. Now we have eaten at Cap City at least a dozen times since it opened, because it is walkable from our sons' apartment building. Tonight will be our last visit, which is a shame cause I wanted to try the brunch menu. While the food is good, desserts are yummy, and the portion sizes are decent, the service is hit or miss. When it misses, it's bad. Tonight I had to flag down a manager for drink refills since our waitress had spent the last 10+ minutes talking to another table after telling us who would get us more water and drinks. One of my pet peeves is when servers are refilling your drink and hold the glass by the top where your mouth goes. It's gross. But the main reason I will not return is the charging. On two separate instances, the amount charged has been more than the listed menu price. For instance, the pot pie had an additional charge for the buttermilk-chive potatoes which came with it per menu description. The waitress told me that the way it rings up. When I mentioned it on the way out, the manager didn't act surprised. Then tonight, we were charged for refills of my Arnold Palmer, which we have never been charged before and one of us usually orders one. While I appreciate that this is trying to be an upscale restaurant, it is dinner food in a hotel in Clifton, which doesn't make it fancy. read more
