I had a chance to eat at Red Maple this past Sunday. The setting is very nice. The wait staff were patient and came around to keep our waters filled often. They also provided suggestions on foods to purchase. We ordered a series of rolls, snow rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and a number of others. They were very good. Just the right amount of balance between rice and fish and the other ingredients. We also got the unagi which comes in two pieces. I highly recommend it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who lives in the Four Corners or Wheaton Area. read more

Two bad ideas: 1. Read Yelp reviews just before meal time. There was a really well written one for this place and I was on the road two minutes after sending a compliment. 2. Be retentive about your own rules. Usually when an Asian restaurant sets the cover with silverware rather than chopsticks, you're going to be stopping on the way home for some Pepto-Bismol. Boy was that not applicable here. What everyone else says about the location is true. By the time I came out there was a car vulturing for my space. One thing nobody mentioned is the very mellow vibe. There were five different tables with small children, and not one scream or even a squeal the whole time I was there. I believe the Japanese word is "wa" - harmony, or serenity. Maybe the suburban clientele is the reason for the fork? But I digress... Those who have read my other reviews will know that I am a piscatorial purist who thinks maki is for those who don't really like sushi, and will have guessed my order: a tall Kirin draft and chirashi. Miso soup: medium bodied, not salty, with a bit of seaweed as well as the standard tofu and scallions. 4/5 Salad: mostly iceberg with a bit of red cabbage and one grape tomato, ordinary ginger dressing. 3/5 Presentation: white modern shaped bowl, long shreds of nori echoing the shape of the daikon threads, shizu leaves, sinus clearing wasabi and mild gari. 5/5 Tomago: soggy and too sweet. 2/5 Surimi: as close to edible as that industrial seafood product ever gets. 2/5 Rice: good texture, but totally lacking the requisite hints of sugar and vinegar. 3/5 Shrimp: flabby and bland, almost tasteless, no sweetness. 2/5 Red snapper, white tuna, yellowtail, salmon, tuna. Three thick slices of each, pristine aroma, velvety texture, complex flavors. 5/5. Or should that be 25/25? Best tuna I've had without paying much, much more. Service: kept an eye on me even as the room filled, as unobtrusive as a Kabuki stagehand. I really wish I could give them five stars because of the superb fish, but there were just too many small flaws for it to be the total wow that indicates. I am tempted to go back at an off-peak hour, sit at the sushi bar, lay down a $50 bill, and order omakase to see their very best. read more

Surprisingly nice place given the location and the exterior--as other reviewers suggest, it's a beautiful space inside. There's lots of room and just enough TVs around the bar not to be intrusive on the dining room. The service was also excellent and didn't seem rushed or confused at all, which is great news in a relatively new establishment. Well done! We were also impressed by the food. We both got traditional Sichuan dishes, which were well prepared and in ample portions. I think the best strategy with Sichuan food is to get things to share, as individual dishes can feel a little incomplete. We will be back many times I'm sure to sample more things. As noted by others, the main weakness is lack of delivery. They clearly do a good carryout business, as there's a steady stream of people at the pickup counter, but the parking lot is too cramped to handle so many people at once (tip: if there's no space, circle around the block and try again--lots of turnover due to carryout traffic here and the Greek place next door). The price was on par with the quality, which means it's a little too much to have say, once a week. But it is a welcome addition to the Four Corners area and bravo to the owners who have done an amazing job! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Red Maple. To be honest I was expecting the worst before I even stepped foot into this place. Every time I hear RM mentioned by others it's always the "5PM happy hour" crowd. These are the type of people who choose restaurants based on gimmicky dishes and "ambience!!!1!" over actual good food. These types of people *want* to go to Benihana's for their birthday. Yes, this restaurant is totally filled with gimmicky fried, saucy, over-garnished dishes, mediocre drinks, and your 5PM happy hour crowd but I cannot hate them because the chirashi bowl I ordered was straight up legit. The fish selection was great. The portion size was great. The aesthetics were great. The rice was not the best to be honest, but it was still pretty good. The fish was beautifully cut and arranged and it totally impressed me because I was expecting a hot mess in one of those gross gummy plastic faux lacquered bowls every other cheesy sushi joint sticks their chirashi in. What would have really just killed it for me if they put a piece or two of uni in there (I'll probably ask for it in addition next time I visit. ) I don't think this is necessarily my new "go to" place, but I would love to have that chirashi bowl again. Everything else I tried here sucked though if that means anything (miso soup is watered down as if the soup itself prepared properly wasn't dirt cheap to begin with, "krab rangoon" was straight up cheese and too "open" so the oil got into the dumpling, lychee mojito had too little booze and was just the syrup from a can of lychee and a single lychee and like a single sprig of mint- could have used (more) lime, maki was yet another unremarkable American-style sushi amalgamation) but I can't really knock this place for having such a nice and reasonably priced chirashi bowl. So I've been here several times, and while the food is good, the only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is the lack of delivery service. It's situated on two major MD routes and could easily facilitate delivery to the surrounding Silver Spring neighborhoods that keep them in business. The alternative for delivery Chinese/Fusion would be Sui's Asian Bistro off Tech Road. Decor is nice, food service is quick, and otherwise is a very nice establishment. read more

Thats what I get for ordering Thai food from a predominantly Japanese cuisine restaurant. My order of Thai Curry, described as having basil, had no basil! Basil, to me, is the defining spice for Thai food. Its what I crave when I order it. So the dish was tasty, much like chicken pot pie is tasty, Maybe its too much to expect that a restaurant with such an extensive menu would not run out of fresh herbs. What a gem disguised as a lump of coal. Wake l me to the parking in the rear, after looking at the shopfront I didn't expect much. The inside was clean and elegant. Nice background music and the lighting was comfortable. I was surprised by all the choices on the menu. I lived in Japan for two and a half years in the mid 80s, I was pleased to find my favorite dish on the menu - yakisoba! One bite and I was right back in Misawa, at my favorite greasy spoon! It was wonderful! I did everything but lick my plate! The service was great and the price was right. I really look forward to going back to try other foods that I remember. My co-workers and I came here to have an office lunch. From the outside, Red Maple doesn't look that impressive, but inside is actually very nice. The lunch special was great -- you could get 2 rolls w/soup or salad for $7.95 or 3 rolls w/soup or salad for $10.95. They also had specials on the entrees for $6.95 and they came with rice spring roll, soup or salad. We started off with a round of appetizers -- edamame, veggie gyoza, pork gyoza and spring rolls. All were tasty and didn't stay on the plates long! As for my entree, I went with the 3 roll special and ordered spicy tuna, eel and avocado and sweet potato rolls. One thing I liked about the rolls was that there wasn't much rice on the outside of the rolls and instead had a lot filling inside. However, my eel and avocado roll had way more avocado than eel inside. The spicy tuna was good, not great. And the sweet potato roll was one of the best ones I've ever had. Service was a little whack. We have our monthly work meetings at Red Maple. They have a nice variety of chinese and sushi to suite everyone. Staff is always friendly and the restaurant is nice and clean. The food is a B+. Not my favorite Chinese or sushi but very flavorful. They do have the BEST wonton soup. The wontons are hand made nice and thin with a good portion of pork. Mongolian beef and ginger chicken are my two go to dishes. Their chicken lettuce wraps & gyozas are also really good! I've been coming here for awhile. Most everything I've had is on point, if it's not, a correction is made asap, so I've no complaints at all. The service is good, fast and friendly as I often sit at the bar and eat unless with my teens. The entire feeling inside is warm and inviting. I see alot of pick up orders so go for it! I'd been so excited to see a well reviewed sushi place near home, and had hoped that it might be a regular stop for me. Sadly, this will not be a restaurant that I visit frequently, though I'd return if a friend requested that I give them a second try. There was nothing bad about our visit. The fish was fresh enough, the avocado was plentiful, and the rice was only slightly over cooked. There simply wasn't enough right about the food to make it rise above the rest. The rice was over cooked, after all, and the fish lacked any true flavor. We did not order any cooked dishes, but I see from other reviews that I was better off with the raw selection. The highlight of my meal was actually the salad, simple lettuce and dressing. It was a generous portion, though, and was not drowning in the tasty ginger dressing. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, a roll combo, and two extra rolls. The tuna avocado roll, eel avocado roll and California roll all tasted of avocado and not much else. The peanut avocado roll tasted more of peanut butter than of avocado, but I can't call that a positive. Yellowtail scallion roll had more onion flavor than it needed, and the sushi and sashimi combo had nothing that stood out. The best roll was a salmon skin roll, which was as I expected, as salmon skin always makes me think of bacon, and who doesn't love bacon? Though the prices were not high, they were more than I want to pay for a lackluster lunch. My search for a regular sushi restaurant continues! read more

We live right next to this place, so after having tried them once for carry out, we finally went in on a Friday evening. The place was surprisingly packed, but it was easy to see why. Modern and bright, this is a nice little oasis for the locals in the Four Corners neighborhood if you want the feel of going out for the night without the travel. Unfortunately, the service speed was a huge drawback during a peak hour. We had to request that they bring out our appetizers after waiting and waiting. Then we waited some more for the entrees, at which point one of the other watiers thought we were still waiting to get our order taken. He was nice enough to check in the back on our orders and then brought out one of them first so that we could at least start eating. The food itself was flavorful but quite far from authentic. If you want real Thai, don't come here. Also, they weren't very willing to make custom rolls for us, saying that it would confuse the chef and take more time. On the plus side though, after ordering soup, sushi rolls, and two entrees, our total bill for a Friday night was $26. All in all, it was just an okay experience though, due to extensive wait and fairly non-authentic food. We will definitely be back to see if the services improves, just because this place is so close to us. read more

I came to this Asian spot a few months ago. This restaurant has a really good sushi menu with great options to choose from. They have many other food options, but we were more interested too satisfy our cravings for sushi. The food was delicious and very tasty. My only two complaints are parking and service. The parking lot is shared with other businesses in the same corner. It is very tight and not enough spaces to park. I was about to leave when one became available. The restaurant entrance (as also is the parking lot) is on the back of the building. First impression... not good. The server was more interested in his conversation with someone at the bar than helping us with the menu. He looked uninterested in doing the minimum. He barely came to our table. We always go for the 3 rolls for $10.95 lunch special and have never been disappointed. But I've also tried their other dishes. The ambiance leaves something to be desired, however; its sticky bar atmosphere makes me feel a bit uncomfortable about trusting them to prepare my raw fish. They do have happy hour until 7 if you sit at the bar, and the bartender is very friendly, helpful, and generous. My Honeyfish Poke didn't survive the 1st wave of the pandemic and ended up closing their doors for good So I'm glad I could come here because their food is delicious too. I ordered for pick up and I was very happy that it's still as great as I remember! It was ready quickly even though they were very busy. They had hand sanitizer inside for you to use. Talk about a hidden gem. This place is very good. If you have ever driven up Rt 29 past Four corners, you probably drove right past this place and didn't even notice it. Red Maple is an Asian restaurant. The decor is very nice and I think quiet. We decided to head out for date night and she didn't want to go far. I like weird stuff so I ordered the coconut shrimp roll( I think that was the name) peanut avocado roll, double dragon roll, spicy tuna. First up coconut roll. I loved it, it had crunch( a term they call "Crunchy inside") which is either tempura or deep fried, and other stuff added. It has mayo, so be warned. Next up Peanut roll. I have to say it was different and took some getting used to. The double dragon was good also. We will be going back soon. read more

Went on a Monday afternoon for lunch. Ambience was cozy and the service was good as our waiter was friendly, attentive, and prompt. Appetizers: Hot & Sour, Miso Soup, and Kani Salad were all decent. Sushi: Nigiri options were super delicious and fresh - definitely the highlight of the meal; we had Mackerel, Eel, Salmon, White Tuna, and Tuna Lunch specials were definitely worth it, especially the sushi rolls; at 3 rolls (18 pcs) for around $10-$11 for good portions made it a good deal. Had Salmon-Avocado, Eel-Avocado, and Spicy Tuna Roll, all delicious and adequately proportioned in terms of the fish-to-rice ratio. Overall, I'd definitely go back again soon.
