I'm so so glad and thankful that they are open and serving during this Covid-19 pandemic! Honeyfish Poke was my favorite and only place to go since the closing of Woomi in Wheaton, and now they are closed forever! My Honeyfish Poke didn't survive the 1st wave of the pandemic and ended up closing their doors for good So I'm glad I could come here because their food is delicious too. I ordered for pick up and I was very happy that it's still as great as I remember! It was ready quickly even though they were very busy. They had hand sanitizer inside for you to use. And they have social distancing markers on the floor so you knew where to stand.... just like everywhere else, but I felt comfortable in their space. read more

I bought a general Tso chicken and I am not sure if this is a new recipe or what. It was literally over fried chicken dipped in very sweet sauce and the bowl itself was half filled. they even provided three raw broccolis. No spice at all. It did not taste good. The chicken was dry and overly sweet and overpriced for the bad taste and uncooked raw broccoli. Literally a horrible dinner. My mom literally had to take a cholesterol tablet afterwards because it was too much and she doesn't even have cholesterol issues. I definitely do not recommend nor will I ever go back. read more

I came here for lunch with a coworker on Friday. The lunch deals here are pretty cheap and the food comes out fast, making a pretty good work lunch spot. I got the Thai basil beef lunch special which was only ok. The spring roll is pretty small and was cold in the middle, making me think it was the frozen. The Thai basil beef tasted pretty 'americanized' to me and had a little too much fish sauce and salt for my taste. The portions were a good size though. While not my first choice, the closeness in proximity to work and the quickness of the service means I will probably be coming back in the future. The chicken cashew was good but no cashews to speak of. The beef dish was ok, chewy, fatty meat, good flavor. Was cheaper and better than Popeyes ...see review from several says ago. Better for in-person dining than take-out. Looking forward to post-Covid eat-in again. For example, the take-out salmon was dry and is probably better when served at the table. My experience eating in several months before Covid locked us down was probably a 4 for eat-in food where this was a 3 for take-out food. This is seemingly a nice place to celebrate occasions, but during the last time eating in, the service was not good. Asian Fusion causal spot with an interesting enough selection in Four Corners. I got the feeling that lunch is more cost effective than dinner, though most entrees were between $10-$15. I started off with a tuna avocado sushi roll, which was small yet very tasty. My husband ordered the crispy duck dish, which was flavorful and accompanied by the delicious sauce (to help out with the dryness). I ordered the teriyaki salmon, which came out sizzling in a skillet with a small side of veggies. The teriyaki sauce was basic. I am looking forward to coming back to try more sushi dishes and maybe the drunken noodles, which seemed to be a hit as I saw several orders of that at nearby tables. So, we've been to this place many times before over the years and we used to enjoy it but something has happened. The miso soup was very watered down. The steamed dumplings and the spring rolls were good. They only serve low salt soy sauce (which to me always tastes sweet so I'm not a fan) and this negatively impacted the flavor of my sushi. Definitely not a fan. They were skimpy with the wasabi and when I put it in my soy sauce, the mixture was gritty, like the wasabi didn't dissolve in the liquid. The salmon didn't have that nice buttery flavor. The fried ice cream was soggy and undercooked. And the one thing you should never get wrong: the packaged fortune cookie was stale. I wanted to like this place, I really did. I decided to check this place out because it is right by my house and I was really craving katsudon. This place is one of the few places near my house that offers that dish so I decided to order it. Boy! was I disappointed! When I got the food, it turns out it was literally just katsu with two tiny slices of egg on top. It's not katsudon. Thinking they must have made a mistake, I called them and told them that they gave me the wrong dish. The lady who answered the phone started arguing with another lady in Chinese over it. I overheard the other lady, who prepared the food, deny (in Chinese) that she made a mistake because she herself prepared the dish. After hearing their argument, I told them that while there is two slices of egg in the dish, that is not how katsudon is supposed to be prepared. Instead of doing a simple google search and apologizing for them not knowing what katsudon is, they put the blame on me and claimed that I was upset because the dish didn't look like MY version of katsudon. Literally, if you look it up online, it looks nothing like the "katsudon" they have prepared me. It's like if your customer ordered spaghetti and you gave them plain noodles. How is that the same thing? I don't think it's necessary to be the expert of Japanese cuisine when you run an asian fusion place like this, but I think it is necessary to know what the dishes you serve are supposed to look like. I don't think that's too hard, a simple google search would have showed that what you are making is completely wrong. I will never eat there again. read more

I had driven by Red Maple for years but never tried it. We recently bought a new place nearby and decided to give it a try after several people in the area recommended the sushi. It was ok. We ordered a mix of Chinese dishes (dumplings, duck wrap, Mongolian beef) and maki rolls. The Chinese stuff was actually all very good and I would go back for it. The sushi wasn't so hot however. With their special rolls it felt like they were trying to be super fancy and out of the box but didn't quite have the skill set to pull it off... the rice wasn't particularly good and fish and other ingredients were all kind of unpleasantly warm and slimey. Flavors clashed with mango being overly powerful on one roll and their spider roll just tasted very bland and unmemorable.Their tuna roll (my go to) was at best mediocre... like comparable to a spicy tuna from Safeway or Harris Teeter. It all seems odd as most of the other Yelp reviews for them seem to highlight the sushi... an off night maybe? *shrug* read more

Solid sushi and Chinese food restaurant. It's a casual, relaxed atmosphere and extremely quick service. Ordered a miso soup and it was cold, sushi was standard but not horrible. It seems like their fancy/elaborate sushi is what you should be ordering. I love their General Tso's Chicken though, not too much batter and very tasty. We were Super Psyched that a new place was opening in the hood, and was glad to see open parking spots, so we could fulfill this interview. Sadly, we shall not hire this candidate. Still trying to find it's feet with new, unseasoned staff, we found a few key things amiss. The waiter, had no idea what was actually on the menu. As we ordered items, very clearly, (we hadn't even a sake yet!) He would repeat something else, as if he was living in that dang "Fringe" universe we see people go to every now an then. Okay, a few repeats ( just give me a card to check off what I want next time! ) and we had an order in! As we sat at the sushi bar, awaiting our beverages ( Bartender was too busy looking and typing on his smartphone) we noticed the staff a flurry around us, yet not really doing anything. Dishes waited fro longer than they should have, and it seemed the place was run by the " everyone for themselves!" Mentality. Alright, whatever, flurry around me, the sushi is up, and I am hungry. The quality of the Fish was decent, it was the rice that was horrible. (And as we all know after watching Jiro, The rice is really what sushi is.) I mean, like the used Uncle ben's boil-in-the-bag Sticky rice! Not a pleasant experience. and of the 3 rolls we ordered, one was not even cut all the way through. I said "C'Mon!!" before being hushed by my date. It was, after all date night. We did not feel good about anything in the experience, and hate that it moved in so close to us. My wife and I were excited about Red Maple coming to our neighborhood, especially when the restaurant sign clearly pointed out it was also a BAR. There was a deep mourning in our household when the previous place and their delicious Cadillac margaritas moved to downtown Silver Spring. Everyone deserves a place 1.5 blocks from their house that they can stumble home from. So here are our impressions: Decor - HUGE change from the previous establishment; almost too snazzy for Four Corners; modern, sleek, cool but without being pretentious. Sushi bar looks cool and neony, main bar is very comfortable and has two giant HD tvs. Somewhat dark overall lighting wise. And the bathrooms were so clean that I would take a nap in them. Food - interesting mix of popular Asian fare - Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai. There are the standard blah blah and Broccoli chinese style dishes and what not, but also some very interesting sushi rolls and appetizers as well as entree type dishes. For our appetizers we went with seared white tuna sashimi and crispy duck rolls. They ROCKED; the sashimi was seared and seasoned on the edges, with a light spicy sauce and placed on a bed of radish strips. The duck rolls were an ethereal delight - no deep fried and greasy mofos heres, but rater think Vietnamese summer rolls of delicate rice paper full of perfectly cripy duck strips with julienned carrots and veggies with peanut/hoisin summer rolls. The sushi dinner combo was quite delicious and very fresh, and even the veggie fried rice we got as a side was good - not too oily and fresh and lightly crunchy veggies. Service - We came the previous week but service was nonexistent; after waiting 15 minutes or so be acknowledged we left when no one came over. This time we sat at the bar and chatted with Will the bartender - very cool guy, funny, and attentive. As this place is still new the wait staff seems to be a work in progress, but they seem to be really trying in that department. Price - reasonable, large portions. In short we were very surprised about the quality of the food, and the prices are great. A nice addition our neighborhood and we can't wait to go back to try more things. read more

Service: Surprisingly, very fast however, we were the only ones on the table area. A few people were on the bar. Our waitress was nice and friendly. The cliche: "Don't judge a book by its cover" is the perfect title for this review on the Red Maple in Silver Spring. Tucked away at the busy "four corners" intersection of University Avenue and Colesville Road, you would never even think to find quality dining unless venturing further south to downtown Silver Spring. With neighbors like the Game Stop and Corner Pub, the owners of the Red Maple missed the golden rule of - Location, Location, Location!!! As I walked in (parking is in the rear and there's an entrance back there), immediately, I thought, "where am I?" The decor is modern, warm with hints of Asian motif across a sleek design. At a more basic level, I thought the space looked much bigger than it did from the outside. To my right, a chef was plating a beautiful assortment of sushi and in the far corner a bartender was pouring something neon green. Upon surveying the menu, (try to overlook the many misspellings of both Japanese and English menu items), I ordered a miso soup to start and selected the soft-shell crab tempura appetizer and one of my favorites, Hamachi Kama or Grilled Yellow Tail Cheek. While I expected the soft shell crab to be accompanied by a sauce, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the batter was flavorful and the garnish of fried peppers and onions complimented what was a nice start to my meal. I did request the tempura dipping sauce, but could have gone without it. For those of you who know Hamachi Kama, the only thing better than eating Yellow Tail Cheek is eating Yellow Tail Raw. While the fish was just a tad bit overcooked for my personal liking, the majority would say it was flawless. The buttery flavor of the Hamachi shined through with each bite, The portion size surpassed my expectation and the soy, sesame sauce that accompanied the dish did not overpower the fish, but allowed it resonate upon my palette. I decided to go with sushi, to really put this place to the test. I ordered the Queen Roll, Rock N Roll, and the Sweet Potato Tempura Roll (which I haven't seen anywhere in the area, and I do love sweet potato). When the rolls were brought out, I noticed that the Queen Roll didn't look like it was described in the menu. I mentioned it to the server and he immediately rectified the situation. The chef made an error and plated an Ocean Roll, which they let me have and quickly sent out the Queen when it was ready. The Rock N Roll included avocado and Red Maple's version of Spicy Tuna. I thought it was perfect. While I hear that most complaints come when the dish isn't spicy enough, I thought that the chef struck a keen balance between spice, flavor and ratio between filling and rice. The Ocean Roll, which is eel and avocado topped with mango and eel sauce, was good, however, I'm still undecided on how I feel about mango with my sushi. While I don't think the combination will be gracing sushi restaurants in Tokyo, I do admire the creativity and the inclusion of another flavor dimension, I just like my sushi salty not sweet. The Queen Roll, was an interesting selection with a snow crab salad in the center of the roll and a lightly seared salmon and avocado on the outside. The salad was seasoned well though the Old Bay seemed to overpower the salmon slightly. At $3.50, I didn't expect the sweet potato roll to be anything beyond what it was. The roll was sauced a little too much. I needed the tempura to be crunchy and because of the gratuitous amount of eel sauce, parts of it were drenched to the point of being soggy. Still, I love my sweet potato and would order it again sans the sauce. In conclusion, Red Maple, I'll be returning. The ambiance immediately transports you outside of this busy intersection away from the neighboring McDonald's, Subway and Chipotle. While the Hamachi Kama stayed true to its native form, the rolls were creative and beautifully presented. For those of you who live further north on 29 and don't feel like heading to downtown ss, let Red Maple be a worthy substitute, an oasis in a desert of sub-par eateries. read more

Lived in the food desert known as four corners for a while and was blown away by this place! Food and decor that can compete in any neighborhood so why they chose to move in here I will never know but glad they did. Very reasonable prices given the portion and quality of the food. Wide number of pan asian food options. I tried the minced chicken lettuce wraps which were very good, and the crispy shredded beef. That was tangy with lots to eat. They seem to have Americanized their menu to have the Chinese and Thai dishes a little less spicy and with more meat and larger portions than I was expecting but I think this is a good move given the neighborhood they serve. I also had their Japanese beer on tap which I don't remember what it was called but I liked it. I plan to go back and try their sushi special for lunch tomorrow, which given that this place fells like a Japanese restaurant at heart I bet will be even better than my first meal. Friendly service, owner even came around, I'll be back and I hope this place (which is brand new) picks up and does a lot of business so it can stay in business. Our family went to dinner here the other night and absolutely loved it. We are big time Asian restaurant veterans. We were not sure what to expect, but Red Maple delivered on every count. My husband (who is Asian!) said his pad thai was the best he's ever had; the moo shu pork was one of the best I've ever had; our teenage son loved his sushi plate; middle son loved his fried rice; and our daughter loved her chicken lo mein. The kids swooned over tempura ice cream for dessert. The service was great and the decor is lovely. We are thrilled to have such a top notch Asian restaurant so close to Woodmoor. Love the inside decor of this place! Really nice, sleek and modern. It has kind of two sides broken by a divider for the bar and seating area. The bar is really big and nice with 3 big screen TV's that were playing the games. Walked in on a Sunday afternoon after church and I was kind of sad it was so empty, there was only 1 other table there and they were finishing up as we sat down. Also when we walked in it looked like all the waiters were sitting down eating the lunch and after we were seated and ready to order we look over and they're all sitting and eating! Ummm... hello? We're hungry too ya know! Took a star off for service. I ordered the wonton soup because it was a cold rainy day and it definitely satisfied my craving. I wanted to go back today for more! Plus it was only $2! My boyfriend ordered the dragon roll and he said it was good, not really my thing. It's a beautiful restaurant, and quite a fancy-looking place. The servers are all very friendly, but that does not always actually translate into GOOD service. We find ourselves having to ask for several items that should be provided automatically (chopsticks and soy sauce with our sushi, for example) and checking and double-checking our orders and our bill. Be careful splitting a bill, I really think that the waiter gave himself a HUGE tip the last we were here (it was a complicated group bill, but we all definitely overpaid). The sushi is good, and reasonably priced ($8.50 for 2 rolls, $11.50 for 3). The rice was a bit dry last time we were there, but it was better yesterday. The spicy tuna roll was DELICIOUS. Don't order any sushi; it's flavorless, and the rice is no good. The miso soup is clear and also flavorless, like from an instant miso packet from an American supermarket. We sent back our sushi entree and got beef fried rice instead. It was better but overly greasy and salted (maybe in response to our complaint of no flavor). My mapo tofu was okay, but the sauce was also probably store-bought. Factors that could have influenced this review: it was rainy, it was 2:00 on a Sunday, there weren't many people around... They nicely took the sushi off the bill, which got them to two stars. I am a huge fan of sushi and always like to try new places. In fact, I love to try different types of sushi but I usually stay away from fried sushi and sushi with cream cheese. Go to japan because those are not realistic sushi. Now to the review; I will write it based on service, taste, quality, and overall rating. Service: I did take out and actually ordering online is so simple. The parking lot is small but its okay. There are two desks, one for people that are dining in and the other for carryout. I learned that later as they are not clearly labeled. The girl that helped me was busy but nice. I went to the place 15 minutes after I placed my order and it still was not ready. She did't tell me how long it would be but it will be ready soon. I had to wait another 7-10 minutes. She brought it right to me so I was happy about that. Service I rate a 4 since when I came in the girl at the first counter was not so nice; she just pointed to the other counter, could be a bit nicer. Taste: The sushi was actually really good and based on price this was surprising. We had four rolls; Spicy Tuna, Crab classic roll, dragon roll, and a spin to the rainbow roll. I was surprised that the rainbow roll was actually rolled in cucumber, it actually looked like onion. I guess I did not read the entire description but it was cucumber but it was good. If it was not described then this should have been there. In addition, the dragon roll avocado was a bit on the softer side then usual. It almost tasted as the avocado was not as fresh as it should have been. The crab and spicy tuna rolls were very good. Taste I would rate a 4 because of the avocado. Quality: Relates to taste, I think the quality was there but the dragon roll could have been a bit fresher. Overall the rest of the sushi tasted fresh and great quality. Quality is a 4.8. Overall: small parking lot, great reasonable prices, unique sushi, overall good sushi. However if you do carryout they charge you for a bag for 5 cents. They do not tell you that and I think that is not cool. If you are going to charge me for something, then ask me. I would have paid for the bag, but you need to disclose that to me.
