I finally went to red Hook Tavern to try the burger and other food. When any establishment is that busy, that popular, and has that much business, I guess it becomes easy to get complacent. We got in line at 11:43 AM and were finally seated around 1:20 PM. The onion soup was pretty tasty but small, and the cheese was burnt or overcooked. I can get comparable or better French onion soup at many establishments in the city. Next up was the burger. We ordered it the. Burger medium, even though it was recommended that we get it medium rare. My wife does not like medium rare. The bartender said they wont prepare it medium rare plus or anything like that...it is either medium rare or medium or well done. The burger came out somewhere between rare and medium rare. It was hardly cooked. I thought the flavor was quite good, but I could have used more of that dry aged flavor. The patty was large. The onion was crisp. I enjoyed it more than my wife and she would have enjoyed it more if it was cooked properly. Especially after the bartender was a little snooty about it...the restaurant should at least get it right for $32 plus tax and tip! We ordered the cavatelli pasta, it had a good amount of an oxtail and was pretty tasty. Book a reservation! Make the reservation because there's basically nothing in the surrounding area to kill time before you get in. Sure there's a good bakery nearby and a grocery store. We arrived 15 minutes late due to traffic, but even though there was a long walk-in line, the host was really understanding and kind about the lateness. Red Hook is a bit further away to get to from the city, but the food was definitely worth it. The dry aged cheeseburger was perfectly cooked, and although I didn't take any pictures of the other dishes, some other notable ones are the cavatelli (or any of their other pasta dishes), the ham and cheese croquettes, and the wedge salad that comes with a huge slab of bacon. My one complaint would be that there should be some skinny fries to go along with the burger too, but that's just personal preference. It's also right near Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies, which is also worth trying and the view of the water is amazing too! read more

It feels like I've been hearing about Red Hook forever and had really built it up in my mind. In reality, I've only been hearing about it for 5 or 6 years and it definitely didn't disappoint! We walked in on a Monday evening and although it was pretty crowded we were seated immediately. Definitely has an old tavern feel, with all the wood accents and dark lighting. We Started with 2 cocktails. Both were balanced and very tasty. I had the dry-age cheese burger (medium rare). It was great! Not over hyped at all. The thick, juicy dry aged patty, combined with the lighter, toasted bun were the perfect combination of beefy burgery goodness. It's a simple burger done perfectly. I also was able to try the oxtail pasta. It too did not disappoint. It's all flavor, matched with proper preparation and a lot of attention to detail. Truly spectacular and I don't say that lightly at all. Finally managed to snag a res at the elusive Red Hook Tavern and oh my did it live up to the hype. First of all, service was phenomenal. Our waiter was so nice and even gave us free rainbow cookies at the end of our meal as we were celebrating a birthday. We all got the famous burger and fries. The burger is certainly huge and very very flavorful. I'm not usually a fan of raw onion on my burger, but the raw onion cuts through the meatiness of the burger so well. I was in the area and Red Hook Tavern was highly recommended to me by cousin. I was warned that it could be tough getting seated and that proved to be true. I made a reservation on Resy but I didn't realize that it was for the wrong day. I showed up at the right time (but wrong day) and the staff was pretty accommodating. The wait was about 30 minutes for my party of 2 (for bar seating). They took down my phone number so it gave us time to walk around the area while waiting. Once I received the text that our seats were ready we were seated pretty quickly. The place has a kind of rustic vibe--lots of wood and warm lighting. The menu is on the smaller side which helps prevent analysis paralysis. We knew going in that we had to get the Red Hook Burger (medium rare of course). In addition we got ham croquettes and cavatelli with oxtail ragu. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The croquettes were fantastic. The crunchy breadcrumbs paired well with the melt cheese and the Dijon sauce put it over the top. Great way to start the meal. The cavatelli and burger came shortly after and they were even better. The cavatelli was cooked perfectly with the right amount of chew to the pasta. It was the perfect vessel to hold the sauce and meat of the oxtail ragu. The oxtail was so tender and flavorful that it could probably be a dish on its own without the pasta. The burger was the star of the show though. Dry aged beef, American cheese, raw onion. That's it. No frills. And it was absolutely phenomenal. Everything was super simple but it let the quality of the meat shine through. Each bite was tender and juicy. The bread wasn't anything fancy but it soaked up the meat juice while still maintaining structure. I would definitely come back here for the burger alone. The burger lives up th hype - it was simple but every layer is delicate , the sesame seed bun was lightly grilled, the rim was crispy to hold up the shape. Perfect size onion to lift the patty. Beef was juicy, perfectly cooked. I can feel the chef put lots of love making the burger, every detail matters. Roman Wedge Salad - love the way it's assembled, layered Roman yet each layer gets all ingredients, easy to share. Country Ham Croquettes - crunchy shell with creamy infill, texture and flavor bomb. Red Hook Tavern is well-known for being one of the best burgers in NY, so the wait here can get crazy. If you can get a reservation, I highly recommend it or else you may end up waiting hours. We arrived on a Sunday 20 minutes before opening at 5pm and there was a line of about 10 people ahead of us. In the first seating round, we ended up getting the second to last outdoor seating without the heaters, so it was a bit chilly. Since we were outside, I wished that the servers came around more often and were quicker with our food so we didn't have to sit there too long waiting in the cold. To start off, I had the Isle Old Fashioned ($20) to drink and the Country Ham Croquettes ($15) to eat. The croquettes came out pretty quick and were nice and crunchy over a pool of dijonnaise sauce that went quite well together. The cheesy ham filling was gooey and creamy --nice, little appetizer. Finally, came the infamous Dry-Aged Red Hook Tavern Cheeseburger ($30), which took half an hour. When this burger comes out, it's definitely a beautiful sight. The cheese is perfectly melted over the thick and juicy beef patty with a layer of sliced, raw onions. The burger is so juicy, so it can get a bit messy. It's a classic and tasty, though it's quite pricey for all the popularity it has gotten. The cottage fries are a unique version of fries and the pickle is quite refreshing as it's not too pickled and sour. We were unable to get a reservation. They book up fast. Fortunately they accommodate a few walk ins. They open at noon on Saturdays, so we arrived at 11:15 am to wait on line. Luckily, the food gods were smiling down on us and we found parking out front. There were about 8 people in front of us and I came up with a plan B to go to another restaurant, fully expecting to not get a table but, again, those merciful food gods took pity on us. We were accommodated with outside seating on a gorgeous spring day. We were a group of 7. By 11:30 the line was down the block. We were seated at about 12:10. The hostess was very sweet and professional. Our waiter was exceptional! Yes, the burgers are that good. They are also over 30 bucks and are huge. We had gelato and rainbow cookies. We all left in food comas and extremely happy to report all the food and drinks were delicious. I had reservation at opening and when I arrived there was a line for walk in extending around the block so i would recommend getting there early if that's the plan. The dining room is lively although tables are fairly close and could get loud and dishes can get cramped on the table. The cheeseburger was juicy, tender and had a bun just thick/toasted enough it didn't breakdown or become soggy from the juices. We were lucky to score a same day reservation for Monday evening. When we arrived at 5.30 the place was already full (both tables and bar seats). We were seated promptly and although the seating is a little tight we didn't feel too crowded. Graham was our server and he made us feel welcome straight away. We ordered the large shrimp cocktail and the croquettes to start. We thought the large shrimp cocktail was good value at $20 for 12 shrimp (they were huge). The croquettes were nice, although there was a strong cheese flavour (something to be aware of if you aren't the biggest fan of cheese, like me). The wine menu here was good and we both started with a glass of Riesling, which was very nice. We both ordered burgers for our main, done medium well, and I had a glass of off menu French red with this. The burgers arrived and photos really don't do justice of the thickness of these. They were seasoned perfectly and really live up to the hype as one of the best burgers in NYC. The fries that came with the burger were delicious as well and so well seasoned. The price of $30 is high for a burger but I promise it's worth it. We decided to end the meal with a cocktail each, a Caffe Amaro for me and an Irish coffee for my other half. Graham was nice enough to bring us a complimentary rainbow cookie each to try which was a nice touch. Our total bill came to $250 (inc tax and tip) which is on the high side but we did have 3 drinks each. You could definitely visit here for less and we will be back in the future. read more

We have been trying to come for a while now. Last time we came, we were told there was a two hour wait. This time we were smart and made a reservation and ultimately, this was exactly the meal we needed for a snowy day. They open at noon, which is when our reservation was. Checked in outside and waited minimally. We were a bit worried as we were one of the first sat and so our table, close to the door, was experiencing a lot of the draft coming in with everyone else seating. This improved dramatically once the tables were sat. The brunch menu is not terribly extensive and there wasn't a ton we were interested in. Again, it was super cold, so we had to go with the French onion soup. Don't get me wrong, this was delicious. The Gruyère was delectable and the broth itself was nice. What I will comment on though is that it's a bit of a small soup, fine, but there is way too much bread. We felt there needed to be a significant shift in the bread:soup/onion ratio to make it truly a great course. For mains, we got the beef on weck and the dry-aged burger. The former was fine, nothing terribly special but exactly what I expected in terms of slices of meat on a delicious bun with a great au jus sauce. The bread does get very soggy, which is to be expected. And the chips it comes with (literal potato chips) I don't feel add much. But everyone comes for the burger. And let's be clear, the burger is delicious. I'm not sure if it's the crispiness of the onion or the crunch of the bun in combination with such a nicely prepared bit of meat, but it's worth the hype. I am absolutely not a fries guy, and the fried potato chips it comes with were very nicely seasoned and perfectly crispy. The hype and the price of this burger did not live up to the hype in my opinion. In my opinion, this is a double edged sword because they could charge like 40 bucks for a burger because they have the demand but even a great burger probably wouldn't live up to the price tag (currently 32 dollars). Visited RHT yesterday for lunch after snagging a reservation for 2 seats at the bar 2 weeks in advance. My son and I each had our own burger to see if it lived up to the rep. Happy to say it did! We are a bit of burger-obsessives so we have a lot of great and not-so-great burger experiences under out belts. This is a top 5 all time great burger for us. This burger delivered in every way. From the first bite, it was clear the patty was an absolute star: meat had great flavor and it was seasoned perfectly. The bun was perfect for it - just the right combination of softness and heartiness. I'm not a fan of raw onion but the bartender convinced us not to skip it since the heat of the burger softens the onion before you start to eat it, and he was absolutely right. Great accompaniment to the rest of the burger. Cheese was done just right too. This is a simple presentation for a reason. All of the components are balanced and add to the overall flavor. No sauce other than ketchup is provided or needed. If I had one gripe it would be that the cottage fries could have used a bit more crispiness and flavor. But I didn't come for the fries. I came for the burger and it delivered. (The French onion soup that we shared was also top-notch. Rich flavorful broth with perfectly crusty cheese. We didn't need the extra food but we had gotten a recommendation for it so figured, why not?) 4.75 out of 5 on our burger-quest scale. Note that we went with medium since the bartender said their medium tended toward the medium-rare side and I've been burned by under-cooked medium rare burgers. Our waiter suggested starting with a salad, then splitting a burger and a pasta between my fiancee and I, so that's what we did. The Romaine Wedge Salad: 9/10 It's 7 green leafs, a giant slab of bacon and a really solid bleu cheese dressing. Upon first glance I didnt think it would satisfy that much but after cutting up a few small slicer of bacon and pairing it together with some chunks of bleu cheese and buttermilk dressing, the romaine provides a nice crunch that makes made it work really nicely. Surprisingly good The Oxtail Ragu Cavatelli: 9/10 At first, I thought it was just good. I couldnt really find the oxtail at first between the chunks of tomato and the flavors seemed muted with some spice and crunch from breadcrumbs and red pepper flake. I think this is just a problem with hot pasta. I wouldve given this an 8/10 but I brought my leftovers home, re-heated it, and overnight this just tasted so much better. I'd order this dish to-go, stick it in the fridge and eat it the next day every time because the next day flavors were awesome and bumped up the score a little. Dry Aged Burger: 8/10 The smell, the look, the cook (medium rare) and the buns altogether made the expectations extremely high before taking a bite. After taking a bite, a little left to be desired. The dry aged smell and flavor really comes through, but it stops short because there just wasnt enough salt on the patty to pronounce the meaty flavors more. A few bites and I started adding some ketchup to it and bam, instantly better. The tangy and saltiness from the ketchup really started to make the flavors bounce around and made for a better eating experience. I think most solid burgers shouldnt need the addition of help from condiments which made me shocked this one needed it, alas, I think it was necessary. The size of the burger for the price is a great deal though and the fries were solid, so I wouldnt say this burger was disappointing at all, just compared to other top places I expected a little more. Overall, solid place, highly recommend a visit if you can get in but the reservation system is rough. read more
