The food at red hook tavern is good. The service is good and the prices are high. The question everyone always asks. Which burger is better? Lugers or Red Hook? Having them back to back within the course of a week. Hands down Peter Lugers. At $32 for the tavern burger it's definitely up there. The other dishes we had were expensive also. Were they worth the price? Hmmm I can't say yes for sure. Fish and chips, mortadella, croquets, oxtail ragu. All amazing dishes but up there in cost. Service was impeccable and we were eating in the outdoor patio which is NOT shielded from the wind but does have heat lamps. All in all this is a good place to stop in but if you're looking for fine dining this may not be the place for you. More of a causal date night this spot has decent drinks and a good vibe. read more

Reservations aren't too hard to get if you hop on Resy right when they drop, but walk-ins are definitely possible! I came on a Saturday right at opening (noon) hoping to walk in for a table for two. I was added to the waitlist with an estimated wait of 1.5 hours but ended up getting seated in about 45 minutes. There isn't a ton to do in the immediate neighborhood, but there are a few coffee shops and little knick-knack stores to browse while you wait. Otherwise, the only other nearby spots are bars, which are also nice for hanging out. The food was great. I came specifically for the burger and thoroughly enjoyed it. The fries were phenomenal, and I swear the pickle was one of the best I've ever had. The service was wonderful, and the ambiance was so lovely--great music and good vibes all around. read more

Overall: Definitely lives up to the hype! The good: One of the better burgers I've ever had, right up there with some of the best. The vibes are great, regardless of whether you're sitting inside or out (though inside is definitely more cozy). Great drink menu and the fries really hit the spot. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. The not-so-good: The french onion soup was fine, I'll try something else if I go back again. I've heard the wait here can get crazy, but we were able to walk right in on a Wed evening. Food/drink: 8/10 Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10 read more

Yes. The burger is worth the hype. You can't come here and not get it. The quality of beef was noticeable and flavorful. It's not fancy but it's amazing. The kale salad was also a surprising hit. Really good, simple burgers with no bells and whistles, but the pasta stole the show. Finally got a reservation and made the trek to Red Hook to see what the fuss is all about. The $32 burgers are pretty solid for a simple burger. It only comes with the patty, onions, and cheese so if you like a simple burger, it's good. I don't know if it's worth $32. The star of the show was the Cavatelli (oxtail ragu) - the pasta was perfectly al dente with a deep tomato and meaty sauce. The garlic breadcrumbs were incredible too. The service was great - they never let our glasses go empty and were attentive to everything we needed. And the space was open and not too loud, so perfect for a dinner with friends. Overall, I would recommend getting the burger once, but I would only come back to get the pasta again and try the other dishes. read more

Very good burger and fries, not very good price. $42 after tip for a burger and water is by no means acceptable tbh. The burger was definitely tasty and I enjoyed it, but this is for sure a one-and-done for me. Waited an hour and a half to be seated which also was rough. read more

we recently visited red hook tavern . first, let me start with a positives-the burger was amazing one of the best I've ever had, also the shrimp dish was really good. Now-for the not so good, we walked in with no reservation around opening time which is 5 o'clock, they told us he's going to be an hour and a half wait, which is OK, but then they set us at the bar and asked us to leave in an hour. Also, the bartender is not very welcoming and is gives off a bad vibe read more

Red Hook Tavern is definitely a must try. The cocktails are delicious, and the burger is such a classic. I woke up thinking and craving about it the following morning. Nice and quick service and great burger and fish and chips! I had a reservation thankfully so got seated immediately and the food didnt take too long to come out. The burger was very good but I wouldn't say best burger I've ever had and the fish and chips were fresh and delicious. The fries had a really good crisp to them too! Did a walk in on a Sunday afternoon around 1PM Wedge salad - Perfect and exactly what it should be. The slab bacon was tasty and juicy. Shrimp cocktail - had a weird texture and was semi translucent that made me think it was underdone. The burger - Pretty good, but I do not think worth traveling for. I would be nice if they let you select a better cheese than just american cheese. read more

The burger, the fries, the croquetas...everything we ordered was a 10/10!! Let's start with the famous burger. The meat was just another level, juicy and cooked to perfection. Loraine says I should "start writin these down," so now I'm doin that too. She heard about this place from somebody who "knows food," which usually means I'm drivin somewhere I don't wanna go, spendin money I didn't plan on. Place looks like a bar that got ideas. Dark wood, low lights, people actin like the burger is a life event. Drinks were strong, I'll say that. Had one that tasted like somethin my grandmother would respect, right before tellin me to slow down. Wedge salad was good. Cold, simple, did its job. Prawns fine. Pasta was solid. Burger is good. That's it. Not worth all the talk. I've had about the same standin over a grill in July, arguin with a man about his fence. Fries come lookin like saucers for no reason, but they were the best thing there. Loraine wouldn't get the French onion soup cause she "saw a picture." That's how decisions get made now. Pork chop had sweet mash and spicy greens. Didn't make much sense, but it worked. Food's good, drinks strong. I'll probly be back. Not up to me anyway. read more

Book a reservation! Make the reservation because there's basically nothing in the surrounding area to kill time before you get in. Sure there's a good bakery nearby and a grocery store. But who wants to grocery shop before taking a bite of this masterpiece. If you're at Red Hook Tavern, you're here for the burger which everyone agrees is something special. This burger is truly deceiving. Simple may describe what it initially looks like but simple it not. The aged big beef flavor is what you taste and smell. The sliced onion is barely enough to stand in line with the beef. I was here around Lunar New Year and enjoyed a really great rendition of spicy wontons and scallion pancakes. Who knew!? Burger, wontons and scallion pancakes can be a fantastic combination! I also got a lucky red envelope with my check! I mean c'mon, I'll definitely be back again soon. read more

Overrated. Burger is too salty and the cottage fries are dry. JG Melon much better on both. PJ Clarkes also a better burger. The vibe is great - place u could easily tuck away with an old friend for hours and post up at the bar. Drinks solid. But food sadly misses the mark. Surprise by all the rave reviews but I understand it's a place people WANT to like given location/vibe but falls short. 34 dollar price tag on the burger doesn't help either. read more

We arrived 15 minutes late due to traffic, but even though there was a long walk-in line, the host was really understanding and kind about the lateness. Red Hook is a bit further away to get to from the city, but the food was definitely worth it. The dry aged cheeseburger was perfectly cooked, and although I didn't take any pictures of the other dishes, some other notable ones are the cavatelli (or any of their other pasta dishes), the ham and cheese croquettes, and the wedge salad that comes with a huge slab of bacon. My one complaint would be that there should be some skinny fries to go along with the burger too, but that's just personal preference. It's also right near Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies, which is also worth trying and the view of the water is amazing too! read more

It feels like I've been hearing about Red Hook forever and had really built it up in my mind. In reality, I've only been hearing about it for 5 or 6 years and it definitely didn't disappoint! We walked in on a Monday evening and although it was pretty crowded we were seated immediately. Definitely has an old tavern feel, with all the wood accents and dark lighting. We Started with 2 cocktails. Both were balanced and very tasty. I had the dry-age cheese burger (medium rare). It was great! Not over hyped at all. The thick, juicy dry aged patty, combined with the lighter, toasted bun were the perfect combination of beefy burgery goodness. It's a simple burger done perfectly. I also was able to try the oxtail pasta. It too did not disappoint. It's all flavor, matched with proper preparation and a lot of attention to detail. I look forward to going back and trying more of the menu. read more

I finally went to red Hook Tavern to try the burger and other food. When any establishment is that busy, that popular, and has that much business, I guess it becomes easy to get complacent. We got in line at 11:43 AM and were finally seated around 1:20 PM. The onion soup was pretty tasty but small, and the cheese was burnt or overcooked. I can get comparable or better French onion soup at many establishments in the city. Next up was the burger. We ordered it the. Burger medium, even though it was recommended that we get it medium rare. My wife does not like medium rare. The bartender said they wont prepare it medium rare plus or anything like that...it is either medium rare or medium or well done. The burger came out somewhere between rare and medium rare. It was hardly cooked. I thought the flavor was quite good, but I could have used more of that dry aged flavor. The patty was large. The onion was crisp. I enjoyed it more than my wife and she would have enjoyed it more if it was cooked properly. Especially after the bartender was a little snooty about it...the restaurant should at least get it right for $32 plus tax and tip! We ordered the cavatelli pasta, it had a good amount of an oxtail and was pretty tasty. Overall I enjoyed the meal, but it's a lot of work to eat there, it was not perfectly executed, and the meal was quite pricey for what you get. read more

Tldr: Lots of hype, but lacking substance. Mediocre food and beverage overall. Extraordinarily rushed and careless service, particularly at a premium pricepoint. Arrived at 1:30pm, and were happy to wait an hour and 15 min for a table for two because we were really excited to try the place based on the reviews. After being seated, it felt pressured from the onset -- were asked for our food and drink orders within 2-3 minutes of being seated. Beverages and appetizers arrived at about the same time, about 15 minutes later. The Duke's Martini oddly had ice chips floating in it, but otherwise was not properly chilled (seems like it wasn't strained properly as opposed to being frozen), and the drink volume was insufficient for the size of the glass it was served in. We were never offered additional beverages. The french onion soup was very good, but it took some time to be able to try it as it arrived without a spoon. The experience of eating the soup also ended up being overshadowed by the arrival of entrees, which were crammed onto the table while I was only halfway done with the appetizer. The entrees arrived about 30 minutes after we were initially seated -- we weren't ordering or eating slowly; we were being rushed. The $34 burger was relatively flavorless and covered in fast food style American cheese; mediocre at best. Subsequently, my plate was taken away while I was still eating the fries. We were physically being handed our check while being asked if we wanted anything else. We paid our $115 check and left less than an hour after being seated. read more

Truly spectacular and I don't say that lightly at all. Finally managed to snag a res at the elusive Red Hook Tavern and oh my did it live up to the hype. First of all, service was phenomenal. Our waiter was so nice and even gave us free rainbow cookies at the end of our meal as we were celebrating a birthday. We all got the famous burger and fries. The burger is certainly huge and very very flavorful. I'm not usually a fan of raw onion on my burger, but the raw onion cuts through the meatiness of the burger so well. Fries were very good as well and they even gave us an aioli on the side. At $32, yes this burger is very expensive but it's very filling so I would be more than happy to pay for this again and again. read more

Finally made it out to Red Hook Tavern to try the famous dry-aged burger that everyone talks about. I got the dry-aged burger ($32) and the mussels ($26). Both were good, but honestly not mind-blowing. The burger was super juicy, but I didn't think it had a ton of flavor -- definitely not the best I've ever had. The mussels were solid though and I liked the bread it came with. That said, the fries were amazing -- perfectly crispy and salted and probably my favorite part of the meal. I get why this place is popular, but I wouldn't pay that much again. Definitely worth a visit at least once though! I had a reservation so I was seated immediately, but I wouldn't wait hours in line for it. read more

I was in the area and Red Hook Tavern was highly recommended to me by cousin. I was warned that it could be tough getting seated and that proved to be true. I made a reservation on Resy but I didn't realize that it was for the wrong day. I showed up at the right time (but wrong day) and the staff was pretty accommodating. The wait was about 30 minutes for my party of 2 (for bar seating). They took down my phone number so it gave us time to walk around the area while waiting. Once I received the text that our seats were ready we were seated pretty quickly. The place has a kind of rustic vibe--lots of wood and warm lighting. The menu is on the smaller side which helps prevent analysis paralysis. We knew going in that we had to get the Red Hook Burger (medium rare of course). In addition we got ham croquettes and cavatelli with oxtail ragu. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The croquettes were fantastic. The crunchy breadcrumbs paired well with the melt cheese and the Dijon sauce put it over the top. Great way to start the meal. The cavatelli and burger came shortly after and they were even better. The cavatelli was cooked perfectly with the right amount of chew to the pasta. It was the perfect vessel to hold the sauce and meat of the oxtail ragu. The oxtail was so tender and flavorful that it could probably be a dish on its own without the pasta. The burger was the star of the show though. Dry aged beef, American cheese, raw onion. That's it. No frills. And it was absolutely phenomenal. Everything was super simple but it let the quality of the meat shine through. Each bite was tender and juicy. The bread wasn't anything fancy but it soaked up the meat juice while still maintaining structure. I would definitely come back here for the burger alone. Easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. I really enjoyed the other food as well. This was one of the best meals I've had in some time. Prices are high, but sometimes you gotta treat yourself. I'd love to come back. read more

The burger lives up th hype - it was simple but every layer is delicate , the sesame seed bun was lightly grilled, the rim was crispy to hold up the shape. Perfect size onion to lift the patty. Beef was juicy, perfectly cooked. I can feel the chef put lots of love making the burger, every detail matters. Roman Wedge Salad - love the way it's assembled, layered Roman yet each layer gets all ingredients, easy to share. Country Ham Croquettes - crunchy shell with creamy infill, texture and flavor bomb. PEI Mussels - the presentation was wow, someone literally hand placed each mussel I to a flower. Above were the dishes that stood out but all other ones we tried were really good as well - Venison Carpaccio, French Onion Soup, Head-on Prawns, Cavatelli, Smoked Pork Chop. The only dish we didn't love was the Fish n Chips, and the Fries choice lol but also felt like it's okay as you can't have the best of everything. Cocktails were also delicious! read more

Red Hook Tavern is well-known for being one of the best burgers in NY, so the wait here can get crazy. If you can get a reservation, I highly recommend it or else you may end up waiting hours. We arrived on a Sunday 20 minutes before opening at 5pm and there was a line of about 10 people ahead of us. In the first seating round, we ended up getting the second to last outdoor seating without the heaters, so it was a bit chilly. Since we were outside, I wished that the servers came around more often and were quicker with our food so we didn't have to sit there too long waiting in the cold. To start off, I had the Isle Old Fashioned ($20) to drink and the Country Ham Croquettes ($15) to eat. The croquettes came out pretty quick and were nice and crunchy over a pool of dijonnaise sauce that went quite well together. The cheesy ham filling was gooey and creamy --nice, little appetizer. Finally, came the infamous Dry-Aged Red Hook Tavern Cheeseburger ($30), which took half an hour. When this burger comes out, it's definitely a beautiful sight. The cheese is perfectly melted over the thick and juicy beef patty with a layer of sliced, raw onions. The burger is so juicy, so it can get a bit messy. It's a classic and tasty, though it's quite pricey for all the popularity it has gotten. The cottage fries are a unique version of fries and the pickle is quite refreshing as it's not too pickled and sour. It's a tasty and delicious burger, but not necessarily enough for me to wait again. Highly recommend getting a reservation if you want to try the burger here. Every table ordered at least one of these, so that says it all. read more

Came here through a recommendation and was told that the burgers were a must try. Their dry aged burger was good, not great just good and the bread was a bit too doughy for me, but I guess that is to soak up the juices that came out of the burger. I do think it was priced pretty high at 30 bucks as well. It's a cool kind of hidden spot in red hook and it was packed inside early afternoon. Finally schlepped out to Red Hook to try this well regarded restaurant. Atmospheric small space with tight seating. Pleasant professional hipster staff. We arrived ahead of our reservation and elected to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. The bar was fun. Had a nice glass of hazy IPA to start. We split a fabulous wedge salad to start. It was delicious and was a thing of beauty. The burger was as good as I heard it was. It was just the right size. The meat had a delicious, complex flavor that was even more intense without the top of the excellent seeded bun. It was cooked perfectly. I'm not a big fan of cottage fries. Red hook tavern is worth the visit and burger delivered. I had reservation at opening and when I arrived there was a line for walk in extending around the block so i would recommend getting there early if that's the plan. The dining room is lively although tables are fairly close and could get loud and dishes can get cramped on the table. The cheeseburger was juicy, tender and had a bun just thick/toasted enough it didn't breakdown or become soggy from the juices. Just the perfect amount of juice and cheese the burger was so easy to hold and eat even without cutting. The French fries were ok - didn't blow me away but a nice addition. We were unable to get a reservation. They book up fast. Fortunately they accommodate a few walk ins. They open at noon on Saturdays, so we arrived at 11:15 am to wait on line. Luckily, the food gods were smiling down on us and we found parking out front. There were about 8 people in front of us and I came up with a plan B to go to another restaurant, fully expecting to not get a table but, again, those merciful food gods took pity on us. We were accommodated with outside seating on a gorgeous spring day. We were a group of 7. By 11:30 the line was down the block. We were seated at about 12:10. The hostess was very sweet and professional. Our waiter was exceptional! Yes, the burgers are that good. They are also over 30 bucks and are huge. The fries are also scrumptious and so was the fish and chips and the croquettes. We had a Cosmo 2, a dirty mule, and a lemon drop. The bartender did not skimp on the alcohol. We had gelato and rainbow cookies. We all left in food comas and extremely happy to report all the food and drinks were delicious. One in our group asked for a, gasp, well done burger that was surprisingly just as juicy as the medium rare one. We will return again, but only for dinner. The portions were way too huge for early in the day. read more
