After having a phenomenal time at the Four Horsemen, I knew I had to check out their sister restaurant I Cavallini and managed to snatch a resy for weekend. While I still prefer the former, I still had an amazing time at the latter. Started off with their nervetti which were very thinly sliced beef tendon. They were well seasoned and chewy/slightly gelatinous, which contrasted from the crunchy raw onions. The addition of orange zest added a nice citrus aftertaste. The fried squash blossoms were good but can be skipped next time. The tempura batter overpowered the squash blossom but I enjoyed the tangy and green-onion forward honey glaze. The grilled tripe blew my mind! It was very tender on the inside and nicely charred and crispy on the outside. The chimichurri action with the wild argula provided nice fresh, grassy and herbacious flavors. The malloreddus pasta combined multiple things I love: corn, shrimp, and uni cream. The uni part was subtle but I loved the creaminess and the addition of black pepper. The shrimp was fresh, corn was sweet, and pasta cooked nicely al dente. The pork chop was probably one of the best pork chops I've ever had in NYC!! It was super tender and flavorful! The cherry glaze was sweet and savory. We devoured this in no time! For dessert, the apricot kernel gelato was very tasty! The gelato itself had an almond-y, nutty flavor that reminded me of the Cantonese almond paste dessert. The surrounding cream was fluffy and sweet with a subtle floral profile. So glad I got to try it! The space is cute, chill, and cozy. The kitchen was running behind but staff kept checking in and gave us proactive updates. They were kind and polite. Food: 4.4/5 Service: 4.3/5 Ambiance: 4.2/5 Value: 3.1/5 I was able to book a 5:15pm bar seat at I Cavallini, a notoriously difficult place to get a reservation. It is owned by the same folks from the lauded The Four Horsemen (TFH), which I still haven't been to. On my Uber ride to I Cavallini (which is located across the street from TFH) I noticed that there were many people lined up outside TFH. They must have been waiting there for a half hour. I live in the neighborhood and it's tough that we locals cannot eat at neighborhood restaurants because of crowding out from the tourist crowd. Anyway, I was thankful to get into I Cavallini finally. The interior is medium sized and does not feel cramped. The ceilings are high. The bar had some high end audio equipment on the shelf like a McIntosh amp. The bar seat was not the most comfortable (it didn't have a back), but at least I had sufficient elbow room against my neighbors to the left and right. The water glass for the ice water is too small. The ginger jawn non alcoholic beverage ($16) was refreshing. My server behind the bar this evening was named Brittany. The service was satisfactory. When I ordered my two pasta dishes and a main, she offered the option of making one of the pasta dishes a "demi" or half portion of I wanted. That was good. I took her up on that, which allowed me to try the cucumbers ($18), which others have said is a must-get. I found them just ok. They were served with a colatura di alici (an Italian fish sauce) that didn't really enhance the dish that much. It would have been better if they were colder. The demi farfallone (large bow tie pasta, four pieces, $22) with pancetta was quite tasty. It's not too rich, contrary to what another reviewer said. The malloreddus with royal red shrimp, corn, and uni butter ($38) was basically the same size as my demi pasta dish, so that was a bummer. It tasted like corn chowder, which is yummy, but I didn't taste much uni, nor get the texture of it either. Still delicious though. The roasted heritage chicken ($49) was really nicely done. I don't know how they get the chicken that moist and the skin that crisp. It was like eating Peking duck. It came in a generous wading pool of a garlic confit brown sauce. The tiramisu ($20) looked more impressive than it tasted. They used Maldon salt, and I found it too sharp, jarring, and disturbing from the creamy sweet/bitter taste that I expect from tiramisu. I didn't finish it. Disappointing. So $177.47 including tax for my dinner and I left a $32 tip. Expensive, definitely, but worth it? Perhaps. It depends on your objective. If you are going there to impress a date then it'll check that box, but as a solo diner probably not. read more

4.5 stars Lovely little restaurant from the same team behind four horsemen, with a great wine selection. Maybe I'm biased and hard to please but I really need to be extremely impressed to give an italian restaurant 5 stars, but let me give you a rundown of what we ordered. The service was fantastic though - tuna crostini (4.5/5): tuna was so fresh and date butter flavor was so unique - really delicious, just wish the tuna shined slightly more - focaccia (4/5): wish the focaccia was slightly more fluffy to soak up the ricotta but other than that it had a nice crisp and was airy so did not feel too heavy. the whipped ricotta was a bit bland though... don't get me wrong I loved it but my partner wished there was some flavor to it like honey or something. tasted a bit like flavorless thick cream cheese - Cucumber (5/5): expensive but a must order in my opinion. so light and refreshing and I loved the addition of the mint - Spaghetti al limone (4/5): might have been my favorite pasta, spaghetti is perfectly al dente and I love the bright flavors from the lemon - Sungold tomato risotto (4/5): wow the tomatoes are soooo delicious and fresh, the dish really brings forward those flavors. I just wish the risotto was a bit more al dente - Farfallone (2.5/5): sorry but just not my favorite. Overall I enjoyed some dishes more than others, but would come back if I had a reservation (not sure I'd wait longer than 30 minutes for a table if walking in). Very flavorful, but definitely has heat to it (coming from a spicy wimp). -Bonito: comes with 4 pieces. Thick and meaty texture, needed salt. This was our least favorite. I was finally able to get a reservation here and it was well worth it. First, I loved the space--modern with chill vibes. Our server was friendly and helpful when deciding on our order. We shared a few small dishes and a couple of pastas between two of us and it was the perfect amount. The oysters were refreshing to start. this is one of those restaurants that I've been dying to try ever since they opened because I am a big fan of the four Horsemen and figured this would be great as well. While getting a reservation is it's own sport, checking Resy at random times is the way to go. When you walk in, there is a nice upfront section with a long bar and a great back dining room room. The space feels cozy, but not too intimate where you feel like you're on top of the table next to you and listening in on their conversations. The service has to be a standout from this experience - our waitress was so friendly and helpful in helping us decide what to order and giving suggestions for things that would pair well together. Onto the food I think the first half of the menu which is all of the small bites greatly outshines the second half which is the larger plates. When you come here everything is made to share and honestly, I wouldn't even touch any of the larger plates. I would really just focus on the small dishes and maybe a pasta or two. The highlight was the bluefin toast which we ended up getting a second order because it was that good and I could have that as a meal on its own. The large dishes we got were the trout and sausage which were really not that good at all and pretty overpriced for what it was. In terms of the dessert, of course you see the tiramisu pictures online and it was just fine. Nothing memorable or stand out ish. The wait: Got in line outside at 4:40 pm on a Friday, and the host was already talking to people. The two of us spoke to the to host around 5 mins later and he gave us the option of dining at 5 PM or 7:45 PM; we chose the latter and grabbed a drink in the neighborhood. Ultimately they didn't seat us until 8:05 PM but what can you do lol. The food: Farfallone with calabrian chili butter and smoked pancetta was absolutely incredible. Also loved the beef carpaccio with leeks and sicilian anchovies, and wild arugula with pear walnuts and cheese salad. Tiramisu was great, too. Also had the gnocchetti sardi with shrimp, zolfini beans, and herb butter, but it wasn't totally memorable, so would try other dishes next time. The verdict: Overall loved. Very excited to try this restaurant after all the hype and also since we loved four horsemen. We got a resy notify on the day of for 6pm so luckily we didn't have to waitlist at opening. We went the first day they started opening on Sundays and there were a few empty seats. The beef carpaccio was fine, nothing special. The focaccia was so good, especially with the whipped ricotta. The farfallone was one I was looking forward to -- it was good but the shape of the pasta was so big I feel the flavor was a bit lost. The trofie with pesto was surprisingly good, highly recommend. The gnocchetti was fine, not a fan of beans. The chicken is a must get -- soooo incredibly juicy and lives up to expectations. The tiramisu was a great end to dinner as well. Overall, it was good but definitely a bit more hyped up. I'd say four horsemen is better if you want variety and a nicer ambiance. This is better if you want something slightly more casual and more pasta heavy. We also noticed that the space is much larger than four horsemen. Everything here was amazing from start to finish. The moment you walk in, you can smell hints of coffee and just feels like a homey environment and the lights give it that sexy charm. The focaccia here is buttery and perfect and words cannot describe how pillowy it is. The dressing on the beets and burrata is another sleeper pick but an amazing add. We loved the eel toast as well, and the lamb sausage and farafelle were perfectly balanced to end off the meal. Couldn't skip the tiramisu, and the flaky salt is unique and really what it tied it together for an umami finish. Service here was outstanding across the board and my man Zed was awesome. read more

I went to I Cavallini last week with a few other people. My reservation was at 5 PM, which is when the restaurant opens. There was a loooong line at the door. It was a bit disorganized -- not clear where people with reservations should wait vs walk-ins, and the host didn't come out until around 5:10 PM. The restaurant is nicely decorated, lots of booths, dimly lit. Service was friendly and attentive. I tried the following dishes: Focaccia with whipped ricotta and roasted cherry tomatos (4/5): The focaccia was really good, the ricotta wasn't bad but was very thick and not super memorable. Fried eel toast with pine nuts and golden raisins (3/5): This was okay. It was tempura battered, which was nice, and the eel was good. But overall this was fine. Bucatini with sungold pomodoro and ricotta salata (4/5): This was a pretty good dish. The bucatini tasted fresh, and there was a tanginess that was really nice. The portion size was pretty good. Trofie pesto pasta (3/5): This was fine, the pesto was a bit too cheesy, which made it a bit dry. Half roasted chicken (3.5/5): A decent chicken. No complaints about it. Chilled cucumbers with colatura di alici (4/5): The cucumbers were nice. Very refreshing, in a nice green sauce. It was a good addition to the meal. For dessert, we got the olive oil cake, honey gelato, and tiramisu. The olive oil cake was incredibly dry. The honey gelato was good. The tiramisu was good. From the same people from The Four Horsemen across the street, I Cavallini brings a similar level of elevated craft and taste. We went on opening day and they save a number of seats for walk-in, so if you're here by 5pm you might get a seat for later that night. The food overall was both creative and tasty. We had the nervetti to start, which while not my favorite was still pretty good. Texture was a bit gooey (as you'd expect from tendon) but the flavor was on point. The pasta was a highlight and if I come back I think we'd order more pasta dishes. The trofie with pesto was beautifully cooked and tasted amazing. For mains we had had the bluefin tuna and lamb sausage. Both were excellent. The bluefin tuna was beautifully cooked, being slightly raw on the inside with a good fatty texture while still having a flavorful dressing with the beans. The lamb sausage was delicious and paired with the squash and cherries, being slightly more acidic in flavor. For dessert we had the tiramisu, which was delicious. The staff was very attentive, filling out glasses and making sure we had what we wanted during our seating throughout each course. The focaccia with whipped ricotta is delicious, we thought about getting another order because it was so light. The fried eel was surprisingly satisfying. The lightly fried fish on top of the sweetness of the raisins was a great bite. The farfallone with Calabrian chili butter was good, the waiter said it wasn't spicy but it definitely builds up as you eat it, my husband compared the spice to eating buffalo wings. We ordered the special of the night which was a ribeye. It came with a delicious onion butter and roasted red peppers. The compound butter was amazing and made the dish. The dessert. Wonderful restaurant. Modern western cuisine. Outstanding wine list. Excellent service. We dined in on a Thursday night. I showed up at 4:35 pm to already find a line of four parties. It seemed like a the parties of less than four that arrived before opening at 5 were able to be seated as walk-ins. The host made a concerted effort to seat all the full parties that showed up early. They nabbed us a cozy corner table and gave us a generous dining time of two hours before they needed the table back. Probably some of the best hosting and seating accommodations that we've come across for restaurants with hard to get reservations. They have a full bar and an extensive wine list. A list of nearly dozen house cocktails with takes on popular drinks like martinis and Negronis. Around ten wines by the glass. Perfect variety and some intriguing options by the glass. Definitely one of the best wine offerings we've come across lately. They also have a handful of bars available by bottle/can. Menu is super approachable and well laid out. We started with the mussels and heirloom tomato salad. Very generously dressed which I like. A couple ingredients I wasn't able to identify. There was a thin radish like slice and some small breaded bites that were about the same size as the mussels. I wasn't able to identify what was breaded. Next was the summer lettuce salad. A variety of perfectly picked greens with a lighter dressing. A simple dish which placed a lot of emphasis on the quality of the greens. We decided to go with two pastas as our entrees. The triofe with pesto came out first. A very herb forward pesto focusing on earthy flavors over creamy or nuttiness. It's a thin and twisted pasta with small crevices that picked up the perfect amount of potato. It was quite doughy and somewhere in the realm of rare to medium rare on the tenderness of pasta. Not too to far off from gnocchi in terms of chewiness. We also had the farfallone with Calabrian chili butter and pancetta. Farfallone were extra large bow ties that I initially thought were sheets of lasagna. The tenderness of these were right on point in my opinion. Perfect balance between firmness and softness. The spicy sauce and the pork were great compliments. The dish offered a small portal from southern Italy to the Sichuan region of the Far East. Service was stellar. Very attentive without being overbearing. Our waitress was very knowledgeable. She walked us through the whole menu and was well versed on the wine menu too. Pacing of the food was on point. Our meal of two salads, two pastas, and two beverages totaled about $175 with tax and tip. There were two gender neutral restrooms; the one I used was spacious and handicap accessible. read more

Overall, for taste alone for a vegetarian diner, I'd say this place was GOOD, nothing amazing. What was most disappointing was that the next day, my wife and I both had food poisoning, and we contacted the restaurant to tell them in case anybody else also got sick. I never heard back from anyone! It was very disappointing to find the restaurant gave no consideration to the fact that two people who ate their food and got sick (much less, for a birthday dinner). This was amazing -- no surprise, given that Four Horsemen is one of our favorites. Of the apps, focaccia with ricotta and tomatoes is an automatic reorder, and we also loved the eel toast and gnocco frito. Superb new place from the Four Horsemen team. The space is sleekly designed in a listening-bar style. Big speakers. Jolts of red - lamps, speakers, window trim, paintings, bring it all home. The look and decor is really well thought out. Very out-there playlist of obscure French pop, Spanish disco, unconventinal stuff like that - that you can't necessarily find on streaming services. Loved that. It seems to be open late, and I'm guessing it's a favorie for other chefs and industry folk. I think they do take walk-ins. The bar was busy. There is extreme risk taking going on in the kitchen, as well as the drinks menu, which means their menu will not be to all tastes. Instead of Coldplay, this is that cult band your friend can't stop talking about. Except it's not easy to get in, and in many cases, you need to know someone to score a res. A searingly popular joint, that will remain divisive. The martinis were on point. Great vermouth from the Adriatic sea! The pastas reign supreme. I think we all agree there. I loved the focaccia and ricotta. Others I know weren't as impresssed. I loved the eels on toast. Others I know found it too weird. Golden chicken was delicious. A very interesting mix of flavors and textures, fatty, yet crispy. It comes with the talons like the pigeon dish did in David Toutaine's Paris restaurant (my Parisian table mates at DT quietly put theirs on my plate because they knew I would eat anything.) Leeks were a great side. Liked the description of the tiramisu more than the dish itself. The restaurant is loud, the prices are not cheap, some of the four tops have stools, so it's not necessarily the place to take your parents. But I appreciate that it's definitely a vibe. Overall a really great meal but can't say if it was truly worth of the effort to get in. Service was great. The hostess and our waiter were really nice, friendly and accommodating. We had questions about red wine and they volunteered to let us try all of them which was nice and fun. Now the food: - I can't remember what fish it was exactly but we had a crudo/carpaccio. It was decent (but nothing special) but there was so little fish on a plate that my half was barely a full bite. So I found it obnoxiously small for $32. - scallop. Same story ok flavor but at $15 a piece it was not worth it. So overall apps were a letdown but maybe we ordered two worst items. Now the pastas is where I Cavallini shined. We had Farfallone with Calabrian chili butter and mezze with pigs head. Farfallone itself had such a good bite. Aldente but not doughy. Sauce was amazing too. I would go so far as to say it was one of the best pastas I had. Mezze was great as well. The sauce was rich and so tasty. I would definitely come back for these two dishes again. I did find the pasta sizes small. It was more of an app. We also had the pork chop that was very very good (one of the better ones I had) but I wish it came with a side or some sort of veggie. It was just a plain piece of meat in a very rich (amazingly tasting) sauce that could have used something light to balance it out. We also had tiramisu that was very good but $20 for one of the simplest deserts to make seemed a bit excessive. So overall I found this place very good. But I found it suffering from the same problem as four horseman - really small portions and overpriced food. I cavallini food is tasty and very well executed but simple. They are however charging full portion prices for tapas style portions and for this reason I found them overpriced. We had 2 apps, 2 pasta one main a desert and I can't say I was stuffed and we normally don't eat much. So I would probably be back again to have their pastas again but only when you can actually get a resy online. Meantime I will choose Misi or Lilia over I Cavallini as I found their apps better, service more polished and pastas are a close second to I Cavallini. read more

Snagged a last minute reservation here and had the best time! The interior is very chic and the staff are so lovely. Our waiter in particular was amazing, gave us the best recommendations, and we never felt rushed throughout our meal. They have a great drinks list as well as expected. Highly recommend the eel toast, cucumbers, farfallone, trout, and the tiramisu! Such a fun dinner - I already can't wait to go back! Highly recommend! read more
