My coworker once told me his brother disappeared for a few hours in Annandale and returned saying he had found the holy grail of chicken. This is that place. I first came here last summer since I was on a Korean fried/seasoned chicken kick and I was just looking up places. It's a cute little place - definitely reminds me of smaller restaurants I see in Korean dramas and movies. I haven't been to many other Korean chicken places but this place is amazing. We got the sweet and spicy chicken and it does not skimp on spices. You can also smell the fragrant cinnamon as it comes to the table and it's just delicious. The tteokbokki is some of the softest/chewiest I've had. Again, spicier than some other places, but so good. We got that with the kimbap combo. It was a TON of chicken (at least for 2 people) and we wanted to finish the tteokbokki there since it'd get hard on the way home. I Only come here for their kimbaps (specifically the spicy squid kimbap) and their fried dumplings . Most of the times I'd get it to go as well . I had a groupon so I got 2 salads, one fried dumpling order and one fried chicken dish. I ordered an additional kimbap on the side too. They said us in the back and it was like a private room. they were more than accommodating when we had to push back our reservation from 7pm to 7:30pm, props to them (: among all of us we got the holic sampler, regular fried chicken, soy sauce chicken, tonkatsu, and dumplings. the sampler consisted of some sort of salad in the middle (part spicy, part mayonnaise- WHY), kimbap, soondae, fried tempura, and dukbokki. The dukbokki was fantastic, good heat, pretty spicy if you ask me but I have low tolerance, the kimbap was not bad either, and it tastes really good if you dip it in the dukbokki sauce. What fell short for me was the soondae, which was what I was really looking forward to. It easily crumbled, making it hard to pick up, and it tasted very mashed and broken up. The soy sauce chicken (per friends) was apparently very tasty, however the regular fried chicken fell extremely flat with little to no flavor. This restaurant boasts of Korean "street foods." The ambience is bright and cozy. The menu has meals with funniest names. At first glance, it seems a bit pricey. A chicken platter is $17 and other samplers are $13. But the quantity was plenty. We rarely have left over, but we had to ask for a doggy bag. BTW, the chicken wings tasted better at home after they had more time to get marinated. There are other entrees available that aren't considered snack foods. The non-Koreans will need an assistance with the menu because they seemed to be pretty much all in Korean. But there were plenty of non-Korean customers dining. Being our first time there, the waitress was happy to answer our questions. The location is a bit hidden, but definitely worth returning. My mom & I went here for lunch and they were doing some type of construction the entire time. Not only was the sound of drilling & sawing super loud, but also I thought it was very rude for them to do it during lunch hours. Also, the music was super loud too. My friend recommended this place so I was excited to try it. There was also a groupon so I bought the deal that included salad, dumplings, and chicken. The salad was pretty basic with cucumbers and tomato. Unfortunately, my roommate found a hair in hers. The fried dumplings were ok. The filling didn't really have any flavor at all. My first time here. I had a craving for ttokboekki so obviously I had to get that and soondae. I thought the ttokboekki was done just right. My hubby found it too soupy/saucy and spicy. We ordered their bay top chicken. We didn't know what bay top was. It's something like a conch that they made into a spicy veggie salad which was really good. The chicken was light and crunchy. The only fail was their white radish side - not sweet not salty not anything it didn't do anything for the dish. We also ordered their stew chicken (mostly or of curiosity). Their menus do not provide helpful descriptions. This dish tastes like ddak-doritang but the potatoes weren't cooked through enough. Otherwise the taste was right on. I've always seen this spot and at first was slightly apprehensive because of the positioning of the building. But those are sometimes the hidden treasures. This place wasn't amazing but it was pretty good. The food came out hot as hell though so be prepared to hofhofhfohof while you're eating. The service was swift and they are functioning really smoothly during covid. They have hand sanitizer on the table and everything is served in either a togo container or disposable. They definitely have a mask on policy for their workers and the customers before they are seated. Their sauce for the tonkatsu was decent but a little overpowered by the ttetbokki sauce. Its a good place to get quick korean bites. And its location is convenient if you want ti play pool later or even before hand. They have a wheelchair escalator. This place is amazing! It will definitely satisfy your Korean food craving. They have this huge platter where you can sample different types of Korean food. The platter is so cheap for what you get. In the platter there is (dukbokki) spicy rice cakes with fish cakes, (soondae) Korean blood sausages, (manndoo) fried dumplings, (kimbab) rice wrapped in seaweed, an assortment of fried food, and a crunchy cabbage salad with two types of sauce. All this is only $19.99. There is always left overs! I really like to dip all of the food into the dukbokki sauce. It is a spicy sweet sauce that makes everything taste delicious. All of the fried food is fried perfectly and has a crispy texture. The kimbab is sooo good too! And tastes even better submerged in the dukbukki sauce. I also like how they give you a salad to give that crunch in your meal. Theres nothing I would complain about this the huge platter. If you're going to red holic this is a must get! We also got the fried chicken. They have three types of chicken flavors. One is a regular fried chicken that is just breaded and fried. Another on is the one with a sweet and spicy sauce and the last one is with soy sauce. I would recommend getting the one with the sweet and spicy sauce. We got the plain fried chicken and it was missing something, so we asked for the spicy sweet sauce and they charged us $1.00 for the sauce. The sauce was good, but if youre going to pay a dollar for the sauce mine as well get it already on it. The chicken was fried perfectly and the seasoning is perfect. This came with a cabbage salad and celery with blue cheese dressing. They had good service. The servers seemed really attentive and we were always taken care of. About a 1-1.5: I had this place down on my list for a while, so I was pretty excited to try this place out for an early dinner. They are known to serve up Korean 'street snacks.' The restaurant itself is very very cute - a bright cheery red sign and the interior is decorated with wooden tables, hanging pictures with mini clothespins from guests, and a little new bulletin board area with upcoming events and such. We were seated right away, and the servers were extremely friendly and sweet. We ordered the 'Dduk Ggi Rhee, Twe Ggi Rhee,' which came with ddukboki (spicy rice cake), fried rolls with vermicelli noodles, tempura (imitation crab stick, sweet potato, and squash), and a clumped veggie tempura; the ddukboki was okay, but the rice cake itself wasn't as soft as I expected it to be and the sauce itself seemed to have a slight film to it; also, there weren't that many fishcake slices so I was a little disappointed; the sauce itself had a slight kick to it, but I thought it was just okay in taste; the fried vermicelli noodles rolls and the tempura had the same tempura batter and I wasn't a fan of these as the noodles had a weird aftertaste to them (maybe they were not fresh?). We also ordered a side of Bulgogi Kimbop (they were definitely large in terms of its diameter, topped with sesame seeds, and these were just okay); and Goguma Cheese Mandoo (sweet potato and cheese fried dumplings, with a mound of sliced cabbage and a Thousand Island-like dressing) - these were nicely fried, but the dumplings themselves were very sweet, and I wasn't sure if I was digging the sweet potato and the cheese combo; I'm hoping these taste better the next day! There was a side of sliced pickled yellow daikon and we also got a soup of miso (which was a clearer broth and good flavor). This is a hidden gem in Annandale. I love the variety of foods that you can order and customize. I usually get the combination platter with kimbap, dukbokki, blood saussage, dumplings and tempura. I always substitute the blood sausage for an extra order of kimbap though--and they never give me a hard time! I really enjoy the dukbokki here since its not as spicy as other Korean restaurants I've been to. Not to mention, all of that is just $20! I came here after purchasing the Groupon. I came w a party of 4 so we ended up buying two orders of kimbap as well. The kimbap, both tonkotsu and bulgogi, were delicious. I loved the slight sesame flavor of the bulgogi one! The portions were also large and filling. As for the fried chicken, we were able to get half sweet/spicy and half soy since we couldn't decide on what flavor we wanted. Personally, I preferred the soy chicken as I found the skin crunchier and I prefer my chicken not drenched in thick sauce. The chicken was juicy and fresh tasting but not as flavorful as some other Korean fried chicken places. To be fair, I rated this place 3.5 stars. The service was ok, our waiter was awkward at times and made us feel out of place for not being/speaking Korean. Also, my Groupon said we'd be getting 28 dollars worth of food but the chicken options we were able to select from only cost 18-20 dollars... so was each side salad worth about $5 to make up for the rest? Definitely felt ripped off! Bf and I decided to try something new so that is how we ended up here after seeing a groupon of course lol (cheap skates). It is definitely an acquired taste. The flavors and seasoning were definitely not what we were used to so maybe that is why we didn't enjoy the food. I will say there are only a couple things I liked about this restaurant. One was the decorations and them, it was very cute and bright. The other was the waiter, I have been here a couple of times and they were polite, most seem to know a bit of English, but sometimes had a bit of a language barrier. The first time I went, I order their wings. It comes as a big platter and a good amount of wings, the biggest thing was the taste was very off. It had random ingredients and one of them seemed like cinnamon and/or nutmeg. The other was the Holic Tempura which was actually not too bad. My second experience now the wing spices flavor was better, however lost its flavor. I also ordered the ramen and was sincerely disappointed, because it tasted exactly like nong shim instant noodles. This I could've stayed at home and made. My rating on service was really bad as well based on it having only 1 server. Both times I went it was the same waiter, working multiple things. They were the cashier, busboy, waiter, server, literally everything. So this led to things being forgotten and slow. The dduckboki is well portioned and not terribly spicy (some korean places go to extremes on spiciness) which I prefer. The kimbab tasted good and didn't have much fillers. Will go back again. But given their lower price points, dont go expecting the best korean meal you'll ever eat. But if you level set your expectation, I think most people will be very satisfied. read more
