I've come to Joongmi various times and every time the food has been good. I have ordered Uber Eats and the quality is still as good (but having it steaming hot in front of you is the best - although it was HOT when it was delivered the Smokey taste for the Jjampong hits you at the restaurant). The fried rice is great when ducked into the broth and the Tang soo yook could have been crispier but was steamed in the delivery. The Jamjjamyun is also delish. All the Korean/chinese flavors mesh really well. The service is straight to the point no frills these Ajummas (Korean aunties) run a tight ship. The restaurant is at the basement of a building and is it a bit sketch? Yes. Are the tables a little stick? Yes. Does it feel like a time capsule dedicated to the 90s? Yes. But is the food good? I usually go to one of the two other Korean-Chinese restaurants in Annandale when I'm craving that type of food, but a couple friends convinced me to give Joongmi a try. Joongmi is located in the basement of an older office building. The location feels a bit sketchy, especially in the evening since it was our first time there. We had to go down a flight of stairs before entering a cozy, very mom-and-pop style restaurant interior, filled with lots of delicious smells. I was here with two friends for dinner yesterday night. We enjoyed the food for the most part, and everything came out quickly after we ordered. 15. KAN POONG SHRIMP This is a plate of fried shrimp coated in a garlic & chili sauce, topped with a generous amount of spring onions. Each order came with a good amount of shrimp, at least 10 large pieces. The sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, with a strong garlic flavor. My only complaint was that the shrimp batter was a bit soggy and lacked the satisfying crunch I was looking for. 70. BOK JJA MYUN This is a combo meal with half fried rice and half jjajangmyun. The fried rice was bland and lacked seasoning, so I wouldn't get this again. The jjajangmyun was delicious, with a black bean sauce that was a perfect mix of sweet and savory. If I had more sauce, I would have poured it over fried rice to make it more flavorful. This combo meal also comes with a bowl of spicy soup (jjambong soup, maybe?) that was pretty delicious. It had a couple pieces of squid and some vegetables. Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience at Joongmi. We really enjoyed the KAN POONG SHRIMP and we'd definitely recommend it. First off, everyone was super nice, the food came out fast, and the portions were humongous! Be aware-- if you get the gotbeggi portion size, it's literally fit for 3-4 people. Ambiance was very casual-- good to come with friends or family. As for the food, I really recommend the Tangsooyook-- the meat was super chewy, soft, and thick. Probably the best Tangsooyook I've had in the DMV area. The fried dumplings were also great, but also it's hard to go wrong with fried dumplings. The Jajangmyun, however, was not my style. Admittedly I am very particular about my jajangmyun (I only go to my go to spots in South Korea), but the noodles here were a bit too soft for my taste and the sauce was a bit too sticky. As someone who grew up eating jjajangmyun, this is probably my favorite place to get it in the NoVa area. After venturing many different places in the Annandale area alone, Joongmi's black bean sauce has the right balance of savory and somewhat sweet, but not too sweet like other places. I also really like their jjambong which is a spicy seafood noodle soup. Thankfully, you can order a half and half or even order 3 different meals within a single but portioned out bowl! I also really like their sweet and sour pork (also known as tangsuyuk). The women who work here are very hardworking. Please give them some grace if it takes a little bit of time. Sometimes if we have more people in our group, we like to order: #36 or #38 Jang Ban Jjam Bbong (menu item number varies if looking at restaurant menu vs online): This is the stir-fry version of jjam bbong noodle soup. It's enormous and way too big for even two people to finish unless maybe you've been trapped in a room with nothing to eat for days and you feel like could eat an entire cow at once. More of a 3.5, but I'll round up. Joongmi is a true hole-in-the-wall - you definitely have to know what you're looking for when you pull into the parking lot! My friend was craving their jjajang myun so we came here for dinner. We pulled up to the restaurant and with the blacked out windows, I thought they were closed. Fortunately, my friend knew they were located in the basement, and their "Open" sign was lit up. We headed down to the basement and it had an old cafeteria-type feel. They have lots of food posters on their wall if you don't know what to get - a lot of their offerings looked tasty and they have several mix-and-match/combo options. Their chicken wings poster was hanging above my head and they looked delicious! Their bibimbap bowl also caught my eye. Once we were seated, we were served the banchan: Kim chi, radish, and raw onion. They also served us our drinks. I got iced water but they also have a hot barley water option. For my entree, I wanted to try several things so I opted for the tang soo yook (sweet and sour pork), fried rice, and fried dumplings combo (~$20). Our food did seem to take an above average amount of time, but to be fair, we ordered several different combo dishes, so there was understandably more complexity for cooking the entrees. The entree servings were pretty filling, which justifies the price point. Out of the three dishes I selected, I enjoyed the sweet and sour pork the most. The pork was crispy and the sweet and sour sauce had a good flavor without being too sweet. The pieces at the bottom of the bowl did get soggy sitting in the sauce, so you should try to eat it quickly. The fried rice was pretty standard but could've used a bit more seasoning; it paired well with the sweet and sour sauce from the pork. My least favorite was the fried dumplings; this was the dish I was most looking forward to but found them to be the least impressive. The wrapper was pretty doughy and the filling was bland. It really needed to be dipped in the soy sauce. (Fortunately, they do have extra sauces on the table to jazz up your dishes on your own accord.) My entree also came with a spicy soup, but I'm weak sauce when it comes to spice and it was too spicy for me... but my friends were able to enjoy it! Service was adequate. I wasn't expecting much service based on the ambiance, but drinks were refilled as desired and we even got a banchan refill without having to ask. I've eaten here physically once and order way too many times. I'm so glad this place is on ubereats because it's quite difficult to trek to Annandale on a weekday especially after work hours. My personal favorites are jjajangmyeon, tangsuyuk, jjigae, jjambong, fried rice, etc. Jjajangmyeon comes in 2 different sizes so that's really nice if you are eating for one person. The large size is massive so it's good for like 4 people! I've tried chicken and pork tangsuyuk and they are both delicious! I prefer pork better with the Szechuan tangsuyuk sauce! I find that the non-spicy one is too sweet for me so I like the spicy kick to it. I also love their soy bean paste soup or jjigae, so comforting on a cold day. Jjambong is good too! If you can't decide which dish to get, there are combos on the menu such as jjajangmyeon and tangsuyuk! So you can both have the dish! They are served on a dish that has a division in the middle - very cute. Our experience in the restaurant is good. It's very very busy so I can see why the service is not the best for everyone but it's a popular korean place so everyone comes here. The servers are so friendly and helpful when you're confused what to get! We order jjajangmyeon and tangsuyuk at least once a month from here - typical and famous korean dish duo! As I started eating I smell burnt smoke. My husband noticed the burnt smell from the jjajangmyun sauce. Its hard to tell what part of the sauce is burnt as the sauce is black in color. I tried to eat it but could not finish it with the strong burnt smell. I called the restaurant multiple times but nobody picked up even though they were supposed to be still opened. I'm glad to see Joong Mi still doing well! The ajummas here are still super friendly and welcoming, and they really check up on you often. The hubs and I come here occasionally to get their gan jajangmyun (thicker and more stronger of the black bean sauce, with lots of onions) and their beef tangsooyook (sweet and sour beef). I recommend in getting the sauce on the sauce and request the beef to be cooked extra crispy! That way, you can control the amount of sauce on the morsels. I like that the sauce is thinner and less sweet; the tangsooyook is also well fried. Their jjambbong is pretty okay, too; this is usually a favorite of all the regulars. The bowl is filled to the brim with tons of seafood (mussels, squid, scallops, etc.), and the broth is soothing. I also liked that there was no sand or grit, and a large amount of noodles! The portions are super generous in size, and you'll definitely leave stuffed! Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from - Joong Mi is my family's go-to place when we are craving Korean-Chinese cuisine and I've been here (and ordered takeout) dozens of times over the years. If you're looking for great service, a Korean restaurant in Annandale isn't where you should be looking - as the saying goes, for Asian food, the worse the service, the better the food. Joong Mi has THE BEST tangsuyuk in the area, and I've tried all of the Korean-Chinese places around here. I'm not sure what they're doing to the batter but it is always so good, and never feels super heavy and greasy like tangsuyuk often can. Their jjambbong, fried rice, and jjajangmyun deals are super affordable and are always delicious. Seriously, I can't recommend Joong Mi enough. Everyone's been making ram-don on social media. With such a strong craving for jajangmyun and jjampong, I turned to UberEats and found that Joong Mi delivers! We ordered the gan jajang (black bean noodles) with pork, seafood jjampong (spicy noodles), beef tangsooyook (fried beef with sweet sauce) and seafood haemulpajeon (pancake). The jajangmyun had a lot of sauce with a good amount of vegetables, the jjampong could have been spicier but had fresh mussels, and the seafood pajeon had ample seafood. We asked for extra crispy tangsooyook and it really delivered! The sweet sauce on it was a great balance of sticky and sweet. It was a LOT of food and we had enough for two meals. It's been such a long time since our last visit and time to update my review so we decided to come here armed with a $20 voucher. The decor still looked a little plain but better than before. We sat at an old wooden table and the seats felt like they were going to squeak themselves apart! The kan-pung-gi was pretty good. The Jap-chae-bap was good too, and certainly better than my jja-jjang-myun. I thought the water tasted a little different but not enough to make me stop drinking the water. Ordered delivery from this place on Uber Eats. I was craving for ddukbokgi and ended up ordering the Tang Bok Bap combo and boiled dumplings. I liked how the kindly obliged with my requests (no onions in the fried rice, extra kimchi...) it's something small but it often gets overlooked when ordering delivery. Portions sizes were good, could easily feed 2 people, 3 if you aren't that hungry lol. The ddukbokgi was great! It came extra spicy like I had asked and with a boiled egg (minor detail that gives extra points), I would definitely recommend this place for their ddukbokgi. The Tangsuyuk was good as well. I had the noodles in black bean sauce with seafood (jjajangmyun, the staple Korean chinese dish). For those who may not be aware, the base "jjajangmyun" doesn't contain much meat and having meat (especially seafood in my opinion) is critical to enhancing the flavor of this dish. Joong Mi was generous with their portion sizes and the service was great. As much as it seems a bit unfair to judge them based on 1 dish, I must. The setup and colors of the wall make it seem like an outdated school cafeteria, however, it does have some professional photographs of the food hanging on the wall. This is more of a Korean/Chinese restaurant. It also includes some Americanized Chinese dishes. We ordered the fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce, half Jajangmyun and Jam Bong soup, and fried rice with shrimp, beef, and chicken. The fried chicken was chicken breast cut up into pieces with coated with sweet and sour sauce with a hint of hotness and some frozen peas and carrots in the dish which just basically resembled sweet and sour chicken plus some heat. I've been coming here for years now. My mom always preferred this place over Choong Hwa Won...and you can never disregard a mother's opinion when it comes to food. Yes, its never as packed as the other Korean/Chinese restaurants but I've always enjoyed my meals. I just had the spicy pork tang soo yook the other day and it was hot, crispy and plenty abundant. Jja jang myun was not too greasy, hot and also plenty abundant. I used to get the half jja jjang myun and half fried rice (or udong) lunch special. So convenient when you want a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Don't expect 5 star customer service though. They're Korean, enough said. Just eat and go on the rest of your day. :P Oh, and definitely not an easy find, being behind Wells Fargo and all.
