    Dumplings

Shin Chon is very popular at noontime with Koreans. When we dined here, we were the only non-Koreans. We noticed that other customers seated themselves, though we let a server seat us. I'm thinking that many people who come here know already what they want, because even before we cracked open our menus, the server was immediately at our table expecting us to place our order. When we told her we weren't ready yet, she left, but came back less than a minute later and then stood there waiting for us to place our order. So I ordered the Sullangtang, which is bone broth with brisket and noodles. JP ordered the Yukgaejang, a spicy red broth with veggies and flank steak. We also ordered the fried dumplings. I don't know if the fried dumplings were vegetable or pork, but they were very good, made even better with a delicious dipping sauce. As hoped, banchan was served with our meal, but was just cubes of daikon radish (kkakdugi) and kimchi. The kkakdugi and kimchi were fresh and tasty. Even if the Sullantang recipe is traditional, I was disappointed. The broth was thin and very bland. However, I was able to jazz it up and make it into a pretty good soup by adding spoonfuls of the Yukgaejang broth and the fried dumpling sauce, plus salt and pepper. The Yukgaejang, topped with crispy noodles, was the better of the two soups. It had a lively flavor and as billed on the menu, was indeed spicy. The menu is limited, almost exclusively vegetable and beef dishes, but there is a seafood pancake and whelk (mollusk) dish. No chicken or pork dishes. Overall, our experience was decent and we would certainly consider returning. Shin Chon has plenty of off-street parking.

What a HIDDEN GEM it looks like a small restaurant from outside but you walk in and there is so much space. The restaurant is a modern grandmas kitchen. The kimchi transported me back to korea. It was truly delicious and I will be back.

Cold noodles in soy bean milk broth

We've been driving cross country from California and was craving for some Korean food after all the Southern cuisines. We placed an order for the sul lung tang and spicy nangmyeon (cold noodles). Sadly, the server politely informed us that the nangmyeon noodles were unavailable. Reluctantly, we ordered the cold soybean noodles which turned out to be outstanding. Noodles perfectly cooked (chewy), refreshing sliced cucumbers, thinly sliced egg, tomato and with the best black beans with green kernels milk broth. Never had this kind of black beans with green kernels, it was unique and so very good! I was pleasantly surprised and so glad I tried it. Excellent food & service. Highly recommend it!!

Ever since my cousin recommended me this spot a few weeks ago, I've already been back 3 times. I think this place has one of the best seafood pancakes that I've had in a very long time, and I always order it everytime. I'm pretty picky about seafood pancakes as they can be too thick/doughy, the seafood is too chewy/not fresh or has too many veggies. This one is perfect and even the sauce it comes with is pretty addicting. The seollongtang is also great and I was surprised by their mushroom version that is on their "new" menu. The flavor is deeper and the mushrooms add an interesting texture. Every time I've visited the resturaunt has been super packed, even on Christmas day! But the service is always fast and efficient. I am glad to add this resturaunt to my list of go-tos.

This is a Korean bone broth specialty restaurant. The selleong tang is top notch. It is a rice soup where you put your bowl of rice into the bowl. The kimchi that goes with it is perfect. It's a fresh kimchi so it has crunch and freshness. If you have done Korean BBQ and are ready to try the next level of Korean food, this is your place. Remember the soup is very mild. The salt and pepper are there so that you get it the way you like.

My girlfriend and I come here very often because it is one of our favorite restaurants here in Virginia. The parking there is difficult to find because it is combined with a bunch of other restaurants. Our favorite order is the Korean seafood pancakes (Hameul Pajeon). It has the fluffiest texture with the perfect crunch, and a nice seafood flavoring to it. The kimchi and kimchi radish is complimentary and very delicious! But everything here tastes delicious. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. I recommend this place if you're looking for a nice authentic Korean restaurant.

Seolleongtang - Good! meat wasn't dry. it is pretty thick. nothing too special and i've had places better and worse. 3/5 Galbi tang - on the sweet side but good! 3.5/5

I never thought I would go out of my way to eat 설렁탕 at a restaurant but here I am. I believe this place is a popular chain from LA. Broth was super creamy and unctuous and there was plenty of meat. We also got 해물파전 which was sososo good. Service was one of the better experiences I've had at korean restaurants. Highly recommend especially after a night of drinking

Coming from LA where Korean food is some of the best in the US, this location is certainly comparable. Possibly the best in the area. Ordered the seolleongtang: clean white bone broth and tender slices of brisket. The atmosphere was casual and cozy. The service cordial and especially polite.

This is a pretty cute spot with very limited parking, which I luckily got upfront of the restaurant. The restaurant is run by an all Korean staff and they are super kind and helpful. There's some decent amount of space in the shop that could accommodate larger parties, but it is definitely made for smaller gatherings. I had gotten the sullungtang and the sea food pancake. So if I'm honest, I thought that the soup could be a little bit more flavorful, I had to put in a lot of salt and green onions that help balance it out. The meat was minimal but tender and good. There was this small hole in the wall sullungtang place in MD that had great deep flavor that I'm comparing too and this unfortunately just didn't have enough for me. The banchan was only kimchi and Kkakdugi, which all had great flavor and crunch and is a must with sullungtang. Just wish that they had more The seafood pancake was decent, 3.5/5 Overall, might go back but not sure. Still good to try if you've never had this kind of soup before

We went to Shin Chon after reading some awesome reviews about be authentic Korean soups / bone broth. We were happy with the overall experience, but the soup itself was not our cup of tea. The service was fine. They seat you right away. For water, they give you Kirkland water bottles at your table. We ordered dumplings and bone broth soup. The soup is watery and milky. We definitely gave it a good try. We read about how you should add salt to it for flavor, but even with the salt, it was pretty bland. The dumplings were good. We were happy to give this place a try, and I think we probably would have liked it more if we were more familiar with this particular soup dish. Positives: The kimchi was phenomenal! And the seafood pancake was the best one we've had in a while!

Drove all the way from DC to the area for the Ekoji Obon festival but got derailed due to inclement weather. We settled for plan B which is grabbing delicious food in Annandale and it's not bad at all. Our friends have been here before and recommended this spot which didn't fail to disappoint. I was intrigued by the variety of dishes available and we also managed to walk in to snag a table without reservation. Food was served promptly and it reminded me of my mom's home made food. The broths complement each other very well as the collagen soup was more mild (you can add salt if you want) whereas the galbitung is very flavorful. Pamjeon is never a bad idea and we topped it off with a beef veggie stir fry. We did family style and split all 4 mains amongst 4 of us and we were stuffed to the brim.

Can you get the soups without MSG?

They have a variety of spice levels, and the medium is the perfect amount to get a little spice without overpowering the flavors of the broth. The banchan they offer for every table is limited but some of the best I've had. They're simple but perfectly compliment the flavorful soup, and are good at cutting through the richness. The vegetable pancake is delicious and pairs well with everything, but kind of a pricey add on with a large portion size if you're alone or with another person so I often skip it even though I love it. It's also a small building so it can get kind of loud inside and feel a bit crowded during peak hours. But it at least stays very clean despite the amount of people coming through in such a small space.

Though it was tasty, it didn't have as much flavor as I had hoped.  We ordered it medium spicy as we were warned not to have the spice overwhelm the taste of the broth (we like spicy so it wasn't a matter of degree of heat.)  We brought some home as leftovers so we will see if it has a little more oomph after resting for a day.  The service was good and quick and we appreciated that extra utensils, napkins and to go containers were really easily accessible.  The lot is small when compared to the number of tables inside.  But, as the sign on the door states, you can park at the church across the street.

On a mid-Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was about ¾ full. We started out with the Wonton Soup and the Spicy Wonton soup. The Wonton soup is just okay, but the Spicy Wonton Soup is wonderful and highly recommended. For another appetizer, we ordered the Scallion Pancake. It has a nice dense texture and I really liked it. It would've been even better if it came with a dipping sauce. We also ordered the pickled cabbage. It was good, though lacking seasoning. Our first entrée was ground pork in a delicious sauce accompanied by sprouts and thinly sliced cucumber (or was that zucchini?). Recommended! Our second entrée was a Pan Fried Beef Bun. The beef was flavorful but the bread was kinda dry. Our last entrée was the Beef Wraps. These were great! Who woulda thunk that beef and fresh carrots would go together so well?! Oh, the chili sauce in a jar on the table is extra tasty. At the end, before we got our check, we were given a plate with sliced cucumbers in a light tasty sesame chili sauce. Excellent! But the hot tea was an epic fail. It had no flavor whatsoever. Peeking inside the teapot, all I could see was a micro tiny tea bag floating or sort of sinking. One other thing I kinda don't want to bring up in light of the great food we enjoyed, but need to in the spirit of full disclosure, is to mention that A&J shares space in the building with several other businesses. The restrooms are common to all the businesses. A&J needs to lean hard on the property owner/manager to do a deep cleaning in those restrooms. I'll leave it at that.
