Came to Sai Yakitori again but this time for their happy hour. I went on a Tuesday and they had $1 yakitori skewers plus $5 draft beers or $18 pitchers. Everything was made to order and came out hot off the grill. I especially loved the chicken thigh with scallion.

Wanted to check this place out for dinner, definitely a vibe. The interior is very nice. My servers and the grill master were pretty accommodating and friendly. But it's definitely more of a drinking place. Also, they don't have the egg anymore.

a new place that opened down the street from my favorite bar. it may be replacing it because the food here is more my taste and style. all the meat skewers were delicious and packed with flavor but my favorites would have to be the pork n mushroom, pork n tomato, and the chicken heart. each one was so juicy and had slightly different tastes i loved all except maybe the regular chicken had the least amount of flavor compared to the others, was still good though! I also ordered 2 asahi beers from tap. i love when restaurants chill their glasses but on top of that the beer was ice cold. the employees were kind and helpful. i think this place is going to do well once more people find out about it!

The amount of options they have for the food was actually nothing like I've experienced before. Typically you go for AYCE sushi or AYCE bbq/hot pot. This place I think had an amazing balance of Izakaya and the premium sashimi being the show stealers. Yes. There's a max of how much you can order the premium sashimi. We started round 1 with them and they really set the bar for the rest of our experience. As much as we love sushi, my family and I kept wanting to order more of the small plates or the pork belly (my kid had 3 orders of it himself) or the ramen. Everything from the quality of food, to the private dining room, to the service, everything seemed worth the price. This is a bit of a drive for us so we will definitely mark it as a place to drop by when we are up in northern VA to get some great quality food and service.

(Which I love by the way, more places in NOVA should be open later at night!) We ordered a Seafood Ramen and a Spicy Ramen. Both were scrumptious honestly. My friend's seafood ramen was super flavorful, and we requested something to make it extra spicy and they brought us chili oil which made it even better! I got the Spicy Ramen which was honestly perfect for my liking of heat and flavorful. The pork was also very nice and tender. I got a white peach beer here that I also enjoyed a lot! This place was the perfect vibe for a chill girls night. The server accidentally forgot to bring out my friends miso soup but they took it off our bill at the end so all good. Located in a small strip mall - this is on the corner and seems like it would be small based on the front facade, yet there was plenty of space inside - tables, and a bar to sit at. We ordered several appetizers: gyoza, buns, karaage, and takyoki. Buns was good - the meat was a little thin for my liking. Gyoza was standard and over fried and crispy. The takiyakk was good - standard. And the karaage was very good - tender white meat inside and the spicy mayo was a nice compliment. The ramen was also good - nothing over the top or trying to be anything it isn't. Just good solid ramen. Would recommend. And will return.

I have been there three times. My wife's family is in St. Louis. The chef moved to Washington, D.C. from there. His establishment in the Midwest was not bad. But his new venture in the capitol is excellent. I would gladly go anytime the opportunity presented itself. The only issue is reservations at the tiny place. (They have a time limit for tables.) They offer standard fare for a izakaya. They also have sashimi and sushi (that is not always available on a pub menu), and it is among the best you'd find in the city. The dish that has been written about in the NY Times is the ara yaki. That is prepared from leftovers, scraps that otherwise might be tossed as trash: heads, jaws, fins, bones, etc., broiled with a bit of salt. The explanation is insufficient. For this by itself, the restaurant is worth visiting. It will make you want to try to prepare the same quality from leavings. I'd bet it is like much else: simple in concept, easy to execute poorly or at a level that would be deemed middling, and frustrating or maddening to try to perfect. That also is true with the only imperfection, which was the tamago. Brought at the end, which is a custom (it can be the first course or the last course), the omelet was more rustic. It would not have passed muster with Jiro of the acclaimed documentary. The issue was the shape; it was crude. But by any standard short of perfectionism, the meal was great.

While we were there multiple larger parties arrived so it does look like they can handle the larger crowds. We were seated closer to the sushi bar/kitchen area but it appeared that there was a larger dining area on the other end of the restaurant. Food wise, i highly recommend the sweet shrimp and scallop sushi! The pieces melted like butter and tasted so creamy! The rice quantity is on the bigger side as well as the portions so be careful when ordering. The ramen was also a hit along with the aged tofu! Those were my top favorites!! Service was decent! Nothing over the top, our server checked in a few times, and the overall service wasn't too slow given the crowd. There is no dedicated parking lot so street parking is it for this area. My husband and I dined in for the first time today, and we were both very impressed with the atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. Hayden was our server, and he showed exemplary hospitality skills. He made us feel welcome, checked in on us frequently without feeling overbearing, and made sure we knew the AYCE menu is double-sided. Speaking of, the AYCE is such a great deal! I used to live in Vegas, where AYCE sushi is very common. Unfortunately, for most of them, since the focus is on quantity, the quality suffers. This is not the case for Toryumon! Maybe it's because it isn't strictly an AYCE place. You can absolutely order items a-la-carte from their regular menu (as I had done previously for take-out). The items are exactly the same whether you order from the regular menu or the AYCE. Same quality, and, this is important, same size! Yes, you will receive a FULL-SIZED bowl of ramen if you order it from the AYCE menu. Not all of the menu items have descriptions, and I was surprised by some of them (not in a bad way, just wasn't what I was expecting), such as: The avocado salad. I was expecting it to be cubes/chunks of avocado tossed with a dressing. What came out was a lettuce salad with sliced avocado on top. The dressing was good, slightly sweet. It was a good salad, just not at all what I was expecting. The sweet potato sushi roll is served warm, the sweet potato is deep fried, and there is eel sauce on top. The sweet potato rolls I had other places were not fried, and served cold. I really enjoyed this one! Everything seemed very fresh, not a hint of wilting greens or brown avocado to be seen! I am so grateful to live right down the road from this amazing establishment. If you enjoy ramen, sushi, and other Japanese items, def give them a try! There are bathrooms available for guests. What my stars mean: 5 is outstanding, memorable, a place to write home about! A must-experience. Someplace I would love to recommend to tourists, and visit myself again and again. 4 is great, somewhere I'd love to return again and again. Back-up recommendation for tourists. 3 is good. A solid option if I am in the area. I may recommend to locals, but would probably leave it off my list of recommendations for tourists. 2 is ok, but only because it a great value, unique, and/or convenient. 1 means I would not return.

Salmon/Mango/Avocado Roll - 5/10 The rice layer on this roll was paper thin and the salmon tasted flat and flavorless, instead of that rich, buttery taste that high quality fresh salmon should have. Instead of actually greeting me, and asking me to give them a moment, she looks up at me (not even the staff member on the phone) and raises her finger at me??? The audacity of that was plenty of fuel for the one star. As if that weren't enough, when the associate that was on the phone was done, her colleague looks at me and asked what I "needed"...I chose to tell her I was there to dine, again, standing there alone, and her response was, "I'm not supposed to automatically know that." Representing the restaurant in this manner let me know she didn't desire my business, or presence. I promptly let her know that I'd pass on dining there, and left your establishment. I don't care HOW good your food may be, your staff's customer service and attitude ruined the chance I was taking to try a new local establishment.
