This two floor building features more of a casual sit down restaurant and bar on the bottom and a more social bar vibe upstairs, meant for but not limited to bigger group hangouts. From my understanding, this place is owned by the former owner of Khan, which was a well respected establishment in the area. I've only hung out upstairs, but it's a calmer vibe than a lot of the other hotspots in Annandale. There's no DJ and it's not super crowded, but the music is good and it truly is a place to just drink and hang out with your friends. The food here is actually phenomenal. From skewers to shareables like the potato pancake to entrées like the spicy creamy pasta, I've been very satisfied with it all. But really, what tops the food is the service. The atmosphere is great for socializing, though it can get pretty loud on weekends. Service is fast and friendly. Food is hit or miss. Most of the smaller dishes are decent, but some feel overpriced. We took one for the team and can report that the $9 corn cheese was incredibly mid. The khanpoong chicken is the only main meal worth it to us. A Korean friend also recommended the bossam and skewers, and I'd agree the skewers are worth ordering. Donkatsu was okay, and the kikurage was good but probably only good bc I got the sauce on the side. A group of us wanted a late night snack after Good Friday service, so what better option than a pocha? Chung Dam had pretty good reviews, so we decided to check it out. The interior is pretty big with two floors available for seating. The music was loud and most parties were there for the drinks and late-night vibes. CHARCOALED GRILLED CHICKEN - 23 There were more rice cakes than there were chicken. The sauce was spicy and savory, but nothing memorable. Chicken was cut into small pieces, so it tasted a bit dry. The rice cakes had a weird texture I didn't like. Meh. SEAFOOD PANCAKE - 18 Pretty soggy and not a lot of seafood (maybe one bite of seafood per piece). It tasted fine, but not worth it for the price. The food was just okay -- we can definitely find better seafood pancakes and rice cakes at other Korean restaurants nearby. This was my second visit here, and both times on a Saturday evening the restaurant wasn't very busy. I also had the same server both times and he is super friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Makguksu, Jokbal and got a free side of fries with the wheel spinning thing they had going on. The Jokbal was very fresh and good quality, the Makguksu was refreshing and a good pairing to the jokbal. Fries were shockingly good too- super crispy and fresh. I loved that the portion sizes of everything were huge and we left very satisfied. The service here is also great with all the employees being really kind and accommodating. A lot of mixed feelings on this review but I had to give them 5 stars because of how kind everyone was and affordable dinner was too. I ended up winning a gift card to this restaurant on instagram so decided to check this place out with my boyfriend. It's located on the corner of a small shopping strip with plenty of parking. Upon entering, we were greeted immediately. Service was great, but what bothered me was that they didn't really distinguish the difference between the 1st and 2nd floor. From my understanding, the first floor is more so lounge bites and small dishes. Upstairs would be actually Chung Dam experience --and essentially where I could use my gift card. The staff kept also telling me that the giveaway was closed, but I had to show them the conversation of me picking up the gift card in order to claim its use. There may have been a language barrier but otherwise everything worked out in the end. Now for the food, my boyfriend and I ordered the kimchi fried rice and the jokbal (pork feet). About a 1.5: I'm sorry to do this to you, Chung Dam, but our most recent visit wasn't a great one. We've tried the Kimchi Pancake, the Cheese Sticks (aka, mozzarella sticks), the Gae Ran Mahri (aka, a Korean-style omelette), the Mak Guk Soo, the Yet Nahl Tong Dak, the Kimchi Jjigae, and the Tteokbokki. The Tteokbokki was nothing like what was portrayed in the photos on their menu, as it came out as more like a soup - it was thin, overly spicy, and the fishcakes were mushy. The Kimchi Jjigae, which was really good on one visit, was a total fail on our subsequent one - it didn't seem to be warmed up at all, as it was room temperature (almost cold-like) - this was a no-no. The Cheese Sticks, which initially were hot, crispy, and cheesy, seemed to have been left out for a while, as they weren't piping hot and the cheese had already hardened up. Service, as always, was friendly. I'm thinking it's best when they are super packed, so you'll know what you receive will be made-to-order and come out fresh... otherwise, if you come during non-peak times, it's just not going to be the same. Great pocha vibes. I love how low key it feels compared to 1943 and JMT. Less packed and noisy, but still lively with a good amount of people. Balanced ambiance. With that being said, let me get to the food. The food is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. The yakitori for example; good the first time but the second time it was very bland. The biggest upset is the Mala hot pot. The meat is like tires. VERY CHEWY. One of the best places to come for good food and drinks. This place is seen more as a pocha(Korean bar) but I highly recommend coming here to have dinner sometime. I like the vibe in here but the three times I've been the cups and shot glasses always taste like dish soap due to leftover residue. They kindly offer to get us new cups but I wish they were consistent about rinsing them out so I don't have to awkwardly ask everytime. Anyhow, service is good and they are always prompt to get us more beverages upon hitting the service button. Pajeon is wildly expensive just like in all of annandale and has more flour than veg than I'd like. Other dishes are good, some are okay. My first review never went up (unsure as to why). We discovered this place a couple months ago and decided to try it out as our go-to pocha had closed down. We had received recommendations from friends for their oden soup with beef tendon and old fashioned fried chicken. The fried chicken is definitely what brought us back the next few times. We love their fried chicken with a very thin coating that is fried whole, then chopped up when served. It is crispy and juicy without being too greasy. Other favorites we have here are their janchi noodles, kimchi noodles (cold), and donkatsu. All are great accompaniments to the chicken with soju or beer. The service is also very attentive and great. This is just another reason why we keep coming back. We hope this place continues to grow and become more popular so that we can continue enjoying their fried chicken. read more
