Before I go into the details, I want to make one thing clear. Red Holic is a place that only sells Korean junk food (cheap snacks). This isn't a place where you're going to get many side dishes (ban-chan) or Korean BBQ. You're only going to get one side dish and that's yellow pickled raddish. This isn't an exception. This is the norm for a place that serves these kinds of food in Korea. In Korea, the type of customers who would visit a place like this would be middle & high school and college students who want to snack. To categorize and compare this against places that sell mainstream Korean food is a bit unfair. It would be like rating a place that sells hamburgers against steakhouses that serve USDA Prime Filet Mignon. No matter the grade of the hamburger, whether it's organic or Angus, it will never stack up against the filet. My review rating is based on a comparison of a Korean restaurant selling junk food (also known as "boon-shik"). My 5 star rating is not an absolute rating. I understand that those who have not tried this type of food may absolutely hate it. If you compare the dumplings here to the best Chinese dumplings made from scratch at restaurant XYZ, it's not going to hold up. The fried tempura will not be world class either and the taste is going to be very different from the Japanese tempura that most are accustomed to. If someone doesn't like it and gives it a low rating it's perfectly understandable, but in terms of a relative rating (comparing this to similar Korean junk food restaurants), this place is absolutely stellar. I think this place would be a top 3 Korean junk food restaurant on the East Coast. The only one that I've tried that comes close to this is School Zone in Fort Lee, NJ and I can't think of one place in Manhattan that comes close to what I've eaten here. Today, I ate the combination platter that costs $19.99. It comes with: 1. Handmade fried dumplings 2. Kimbab (Korea style maki rolls) 3. Spicy korean rice cakes (Ddukbokgi) 4. Sundae (a korean version of "blood sausage") 5. Fried tempura (korean style) 6. Cabbage with a korean-style thousand island dressing. Every single one of the items conjured up memories of my past when I used to go and snack on these things back when I was in middle and high school in Korea. Surely, some things are different. The quality of ingredients (in particular the oil that was used to fry the tempura and the produce) is significantly better than the quality served back in Korea and Red Holic doesn't use as much MSG so it's technically not the same. However, it's just remarkable to see that every single one of items on this combination platter hits a 4* or above in my books. I've seen some restaurants make 1-2 of these dishes really well but to hit the mark on all the items on this combination platter? That's really rare. And to make things better, considering that this dish is for 2 that makes it $9.99 a person. If you wanted to order all of these separately, you'll be paying a total of $40-$50+ for this in NY. In my opinion, this is an absolute bargain. If you're a bit curious and adventurous and are willing to try non-standard Korean food I strongly suggest you give it a shot. For the Koreans who crave this kind of food, I urge you to go. If you don't try this out, you are going to really really really be doing yourself a disservice and depriving yourself of wonderful boon-shik food. As of today, I have become a fan of Red Holic and it will be one of my top go-to spots every time I go to Annandale. read more

A trendy Korean street-food restaurant in Annandale. It's bit hard to locate this place as the signs aren't very visible from Little River Turnpike, but it's located right next to the Palace Restaurant, but the entrance to Red Holic isn't as same as Palace, so if you go into Palace thinking you can park there and walk to Red Holic, you've been warned. Anyway, the restaurant is pretty small and you actually have to stair DOWN to enter this place. I feel like this place used to be like Jackson Hewitt or some sort of local tax center, but renovated into a trendy, cute, and chic Korean joint serving comfort foods from the mainlands. Kudos! Korean street-foods consists of ramen, spicy rice cakes, kimbap, fried vegetables, tenpura, and other finger foods. Because they're mainly sold on streets in Korea, the prices aren't high, so you can enjoy variety of items without having to worry about big bill at the end. This place actually takes a step further by creating a giant trey that includes 5-6 items that's large enough for two people at $20, so if you're first timer, new to the Korean street foods, that will serve your purpose of visit. Kudos again! A friend, who lived in Korea until 26 and now been in America for a year, thinks this place is a hit and will do very well in Northern Virginia where many people crave for the street-foods and there aren't many options to enjoy. This place invested bit effort into making the interior look very modern and bright (Red everywhere!) so it could be a very cute date place for couples. I went with a dude, so epic fail on that part. There is a little private room in the back, which is why I thought this place used to be some sort of office, is now being utilized as private room for large group. I think this is a huge plus for the restaurant as there WILL BE CHURCH GROUP coming here as party of 12. Instead of taking of 3 tables and half of the restaurant, they can be caged into that private room and order the entire menu. I don't think restaurant management thought of this, but they happened to have that private room and wanted to make more rooms for tables. Quick service and tasty food served hot? I'm a fan! Red Holic serves Korean street food, which, as we all know, is the very best kind. My boyfriend and I started out with the "ManDuk" platter, which came with six mandu (fried dumplings) and a bowl of dukbokki (rice cakes in a spicy sauce). Yum! The dukbokki here isn't as spicy as I've had it in the past, which is a good thing for me because I'm lame at handling super spicy food. We also had to get the chicken, of course. We got the korean fried chicken with sweet & spicy sauce, which came covered in deliciousness. A bit messy, but really tasty, and definitely different than Bonchon-style chicken. We also got miso soup and two different kinds of radish with our meal -- the traditional white cubed sweet-pickled daikon and the yellow pickled kind that I can't remember the name of right now. Service was friendly and quick, although coming in at 9:15 with a 10:00 closing time meant we had to pay our bill before we were done eating, and felt a smidge rushed at the end to get on out. A new Korean diner tucked into a semi-basement of Annandale, VA definitely delivers for Korean comfort food. Next to more popular Palace and only a few blocks from Shilla and a few other more famous Korean pit-stops like Ara & BonChon, a great alternative with some different options than the aforementioned popular joints. They serve the double-fried Korean fried chicken that has become all the rage lately, and it is almost as good as BonChon. Now that the Annandale Bonchon has been surpassed by the far superior (in service & variety of options) Fairfax and Centreville Bonchons, Red Holic is a viable option when you crave the delicious chicken. Additionally, they have a variety of combination boxes that include some of the Korean street food and fast food that is flavorful and even a bit healthy compared to their American diner alternatives. The bang for your buck is in play here, as most of the food is quite cheap. The tempura plate is large and flavorful and comes in several sizes, a nice addition to the other options on the menu. The servers were very friendly (not always a given in some of the spots in Annandale, not naming any names) and most spoke English if needed. Overall, a good experience that was a little different than the plethora of Korean food found in Annandale. If you thought Korean food was just meat plates and kimchi, the multitude of options available in Annandale continue to prove that misconception wrong. Enjoy! read more

My family and I really enjoyed this place. The wait staff was very friendly and the food was great even though it was very different. We had the Groupon so we ordered 2 Pork dumplings and 2 orders of the Fried chicken and ddukbokkii as our appetizer. My parents were NOT happy when they first saw the ddukbokkii but they tried it and LOVED IT. It looks VERY scary because the entire dish was bright RED but try it and I'm sure you'll be a fan. My friend and I went using a Groupon. The restaurant is actually located down the steps in front of the building. Parking lot is small, but Annandale is cramped to begin with. We ordered a special platter that had a variety of items on it (I don't remember what it's called and I can't pull up a menu) and the alfredo ddukbokki. This is not a typical korean restaurant. Food: Sweet Potatoes Cheese dumpling is amazing. The dumpling is handmade with thick chewy skin. The sweet potato matches perfectly with white mild cheese ( mozzarella perhaps). Cole slaw with sweet thousand island dressing is very pretty and tasty. This is the best dish so far. I like the free salad and soup that comes with groupon. Korean style fried chicken is really good too. The soy sauce one is better than the sweet & sour one. This isn't the kind of place you go into looking for great service, so don't expect it. The waitress did however make a few recommendations which I appreciated. Our Groupon was for 4 people: 4 salads, 2 (select) chicken entrees, and 2 plates of dumplings. We ordered the soy chicken, sweet & sour chicken, sweet potato & cheese fried dumplings, and the steamed dumplings. It came w/ pickled radishes: the white and yellow ones. So this is the part that threw me off, the chicken was medium size nuggets of breast meat w/ the bone in. We had MAYBE 4 drumettes out of both plates. The sweet and sour flavor wasn't all that, the soy was better but again it still wasn't all that. I likely felt this way because Bon Chon is everything to me. I've had other Korean FC but Bon Chon has always been the best and this, quite frankly, was the worst. After getting stink-eyes, cold shoulders, and outright scoffing in Korean restaurants all over Annandale, finally a place where the servers are nice! Seriously, I added a star just for that. We had fried dumplings and a spicy/sour chicken. The dumplings were pretty good; hot and crunchy, though the filling was a little bland for my taste. The sauce helped with that. But enough about dumplings, let's talk about chicken. I've been looking for an additional option to Bonchon for a while now. After being underwhelmed by UCB's lack of seasoning, I'm glad to say that Red Holic delivers. The chicken isn't quite as crispy as the aforementioned, but is very juicy and flavorful underneath the double-fried skin. The sauce has a nicely complex sweet-sour-hot flavor that changes with every bite, and is absolutely slathered on every single piece of the chicken. The peanut garnish actually provides such a nice counterpoint that both my girlfriend and I wished there was more of it. And you get an entire bird for $16, which is enough to feed at least 2 people and probably have leftovers. Rather different from the Korean fried chicken I'm used to, but very tasty. Overall, a nice alternative to Bonchon for those times when you just have to get your fingers sticky and your face smeared. The love the ambiance and feel of this cute little eatery. We came here on a week night, so it was reasonably slow for a new joint. I am impressed with the great service we received. They explained the menu to us and also made great suggestions. We tried their fried dumplings dish that was covered in a sweet/spicy sauce and one of their three signature holic chicken. The whole chicken was cut into four pieces and it was deep fried with a side of salt/pepper dip. I personally love their chicken. It was cooked perfectly. The meat was tender and moist while the skin was nice and crispy. We had more than half of the chicken to take home. Not only did they refill our pickled radishes that accompanied the chicken, but they even sent us home with more pickled radishes. Love it. Next time, I come back I will have to try another version of their holic chicken as I am curious as to how else they may prepare it. read more

My friend and I were tricked! From the outside it looks like a korean hot dog place because there is a red hotdog looking character on their logo LOL. But it was actually a dukbokki cartoon. So sadly there are no hotdogs there. ANYWAYS, food is cheap ($6-9 for entrees I believe) and they give you a pretty generous serving for the price you are paying. Also food was pretty decent so I probably would come back. Menu is limited but there is still a good selection of korean entrees. I believe they have joined in the korean fried chicken hype, but I can't tell you how it is. Service is pretty good. They forgot my fries that was suppose to come with my dish and they brought it right out after I asked about it. They also offered my friend and I a free drink because of the mistake. Fantastic little place. The menu is composed of typical street food you'd find in Myeongdong or the various outdoor markets in Seoul - ddeokboki (i.e., rice cakes smothered in fermented red pepper paste, with fish cake), kimbab (think of a sushi roll, but with meats, veggies, and other goodies, rather than fish), soondae (blood sausage), etc. There's also a twice-fried chicken dish (as known to most by the one that popularized it in the DC area, Bonchon) and dumplings. Being somewhat hungry, we had two plates. We chose the ddeokboki with ramen (another $1) - spicy enough to be filling, but not too spicy as to be ridiculous. (When I make it at home, I tend to go far overboard...they did a better job in that regard.) We also had the tuna kimbab, which was moist and fresh. (I thought the tuna was a little drier than it should be, but the lady said it was great.) We didn't get a chance to have the soondae, but next time. Can't speak to the chicken, either. Great little place. Definitely worth a visit, and pretty cheap. Between the two of us, we spent $17 including tip. I went in to try their DBKI menu and saw that there was a sampler of Kimbop, DBKI, Friend Veggies & Dumplings and Soondae. WOWOWOWOW! If it's your first time here then you should definitely try the sampler plater to get a taste of everything they have to offer. The food for my wise was mediocre. As for the soondae, it was my first time eating soondae and it was an unexpected texture - same thing with the toppoki - I get tired of the flavor really easiliy. I bought a Groupon which was $14 for a whole chicken, dumplings, and 2 cans of soda. I don't usually buy restaurant deals from Groupon or Living Social because the service tends to be poor as if to compensate the price. However, one of my friends bought a Living Social deal from Red Holic just because it was so cheap and told me she was pleasantly surprised by the food and great service. I was working late one night and decided to use this Groupon to order my take-out dinner: half seasoned and half fried chicken, sweet and sour sauce dumplings, and 2 cans of coke. The server/cashier/owner(not sure what he does there since I picked up) was very friendly and packed a bowl of rice for free which I forgot to order on the phone. It's a little difficult to find this place since you can't see the sign from the main street. I suppose a lot of restaurants run Groupon/Living Social deals to bring in customers for that reason, otherwise the customers won't know where this place is. It was clean and bright inside, there were about 10 tables and hand-written menu on the wall. I looked at the menu and the price was decent. They also sell typical Korean snacks such as spicy rice cake, Korean veggie roll (both traditional and the new "baby" roll), etc. I came back to the office and opened the package. I actually got to the restaurant 30 minutes later than expected because I was caught up with an urgent call. Also I had to drive back to the office so I can't complain the food not being steamy hot and crispy. There were 8 "big" fried dumplings and the sweet and sour sauce was neatly packed separately. I liked them and thought they would have tasted even better had I eaten them while served fresh. There was a bowl of chopped lettuce with mayo came with the dumplings but I didn't eat it because I just don't like the combination of lettuce and mayo. The chicken was still somewhat crispy even after sitting on the table or in my car for about an hour. The seasoned chicken wasn't really spicy (but I liked it because I can't eat spicy food) so you may want to order to make yours spicy if you like spicy chicken. The fried chicken is just fried chicken - I don't know what else to say about it since I'm not very picky about fried chicken. All in all, they did taste like the ones I used to order at night when I was in Korea. Oh, and the chicken came with the sweet and sour radish cubes. I love those with seasoned chicken. We came here to get the Groupon deal: we got the soy chicken, the sweet and spicy chicken, and the pan fried dumplings. We ordered the bulgogi kimbap extra. Soy chicken: 3.5/5 - not bad, had a nice crunch. Lacked some salt but the chicken was still juicy and not dry. Sweet and spicy chicken: 2/5 - strange flavor. I could taste the sweet but not the spicy, nor any savory. Again, chicken is juicy and not dry. Dumplings: 3/5 - lacked salt, nice crisp on them. They were 6 dumplings per order. Not bad. Kimbap: 3/5 - rice was a little soft. Overall okay. Nothing great to say but nothing bad to say either. Service was not great. Our server seemed indifferent to us and was not super friendly. Final say? I would rather go to Bonchon for Korean fried chicken, and make dumplings at home. Would mot die to come back for kimbap. Maybe I would come back to try their sampler. It's a very modern and cozy restaurant. I wasn't expecting waiter service when I walked in and was pleasantly surprised how attentive and friendly they are. Had the holic tonkatsu, bulgogi kimbap, and fried dumplings. The fried dumplings and kimbap were okay. The fried dumpling was a little greasy, but nothing else stood out. The holic style tonkatsu was exceptional, however. I love the sauce! It's a variation of katsu sauce, i think, but it has a kick to it. The portion is huge for 8 dollars. One of my favorite restaurants! The service is pretty good, and the waiters are mainly Korean speakers but really nice. I especially love the adorable atmosphere here :) The place serves Both traditional and modernized Korean street-style food, or "typical" food you would eat in Korea. The food is affordable, especially if you share dishes! Each dish is about under $10 and they give pretty big portions. The sweet potato and cheese dumplings are AMAZING, especially if you get it with toppoki (spicy rice cake) and dip it in the sauce :D The Holic Sampler is perfect for 2 people! If you come with several others, I would recommend getting several dishes (donkatsu toppoki, alfredo toppoki, and tempura are really good here) and share! The fried chicken is only so-so; I wouldn't recommend getting it. They also give you miso soup with your food! Been to this place several times and I was satisfied each time. I really like their dduk-bbok-ki. It's spicier than other dduk-bbok-ki you'd get around NOVA but it is good. Come to think of it, I think most of their spicy items are a bit spicier than other place. Like jjol-myun, this thing definitely is spicier than other places but in a good way. Their kim-bob is nothing special. Chicken dish wasn't too impressive either, Don-ka-tsu was okay but I'm still fan of donkatsu from Myung Ga Kim Bob by Lotte in Fairfax. I hope they have Ra-Bbok-Ki on their menu. I really like their dduk-bbok-ki sauce but that much rice cake is just too much. I loved that the restaurant decor and atmosphere makes it almost like a cute doll-house. It has a very modern, pop-culture vibe to it. As for the service, staff members are very young and seem inexperienced, almost negligent. Many of them are not near native in English, so it took me nearly five minutes and repeated dialogue to confirm that there was no pork in my order (they ended up recommending then serving me pork dumplings however). My wife and I found this little gem through Groupon, otherwise we wouldn't have known its existence. Since then, I found their Facebook presence (https://www.facebook.com/redholicva) which you can see their menu. I didn't find a website for them. The walkdown establishment off Little Rive Turnpike was colorful (reddish), fun and well lit. The parking lot had plenty of parking off that busy main road. For the Groupon deal, we received soup, salad, a choice of three dumplings and a choice of the three signature Korean-styled fried chicken (think wings, drumsticks and chunks of white meat, served w/side dish of radish). Went here for the first time. Was REALLY full from their huge Red Holic sampler and an order of fried chicken. Really well flavored and spiced ddukbokki. The fried chicken was okay, but that's only because I'm still not sure if I like the cinnamon in the glaze on the chicken. I mean I like cinnamon in general, but not so much on my fried chicken. Guys that's really an AVERAGE place to grab Korean-street style snacks. Especially there wings!! I had one called Holic wings, it supposed to be made by there house special sauce or whatever, but it was BLENDED!!! Tried this using Groupon. The service was good, but took longer than it should for such a small place. The problem is that there was very little choice among dishes for the groupon, so you basically pick 2 of 3 kinds of chicken. We got spiced chicken, which was very good. This place is pretty good. I like their fried chicken and their kimbab. Their ddukbokgi is also pretty good as well.
